Oh no not the M17/GT725 "REAL 4850" BIOS on the Asus W90's 4870(4850 is you look at the specs)

    mmmmm
maybe since the bios(W90) was meant for gddr5....... which the Asus W90 doesn't have(it has Gddr3)......... maybe that's causing the problem.......
it has the same transitors/Shaders/etc. the only thing that might be different is the clock speeds....
to me it makes sense to try but maybe they are scared something might happen or something.... i guess i understand that point also. but to say it's different.....

    that's like saying the mxm 3.0 280m/260m isn't the same(can't be flashed to each other) or the mxm 2.1 fx3700/280m/260m/9800m gtx isn't the same. oe the 9800m gt/8800m gtx/9800m gts/9800m gs/8800m gts/9800gts isn't the same. Get me??????

im not saying anything against what the card is or isn't. it was what was given back to me as an answer.

im the king of try any thing no matter how far fetched it may sound. :)
but when doing that.. i would flash the slave card first. then boot to windows to see if it picked up. then run some test on it if it did pick up....but that's just me.

oh i didn't see what was the response when you asked it. but flashing the slave is always recommended first so you can see what you are doing just incase it doesn't go right.

Mostly the ones that were half off. SF4 (was using a friend's copy), Demigod, Section 8, BF2142 (finally), and GTR Evolution.

So it's definitely a driver package resource issue that inf modding probably won't fix.

Yeah, when I had the screen tearing problem, I tried switching the GPUs. Surprisingly, I was successful in pulling off all the cooling on both cards. The adhesive is some pretty strong stuff.

Hmm, maybe if I flash the cards with the 4850 bios from the M17 or from the MSI GT725 it could work. It's not so much risky, but I don't feel like removing the cooling from the cards again. But this would give me a good excuse to take a look at the 4850's vBIOS if they're any takers.

Yeah, didn't get far other than maxxing the core at 705mhz via single card, but this was after reinstalling drivers. But Vantage wouldnt run completely because the driver kept on stopping.

Also, I tried Master 1.1v + Master 1.2v and it won't boot to windows so it's something with the 2nd card Crossfire doesn't like when it's a Master VGA card.

It's definitely a driver issue because when the drivers are uninstalled and crossfire is disabled, it boots up with no problem with both cards with Master BIOSes @ 1.2v

They would if it wasnt profitable which might also have been the case and with all the the RMAs etc i would not be shocked at all if that was the only reason.

People having multiple RMAs and all that overnight shipping back and forth etc really had to chew deeply into what ever profit they were making on the machine.

I still think the machine is amazing and deserved much better treatment then it got though :(.

    it was their flag ship

there was a HW issue and they never did "fix" it.

I do see where your coming from but they really marketed that laptop and they knew and i know if they would of fixed it and then fixed the first wave of RMA's they would of profited off of it in the end.

I think they were testing out a high end notebook to see how it would do. At least thats the sense I got from some reviews I read. Kind of makes sense, test the waters then fix the mistakes and release a new and better one later. If they release another high end notebook similar to the w90 by next summer, then I'd say thats the reason. Who knows 100% for sure, but bad business either way.

I'll remain hopeful that someone can make a new driver work or that ati really does release one that will work as that article posted some pages back said they were.

I tried something, Reversing the slave card from master to slave OC'd, then reformatted my w90 from WIN 7 to vista.... I didnot install the drivers from disk, went to pick up directly the latest from ATI (9.8).
I used the mobility modder but the second card, which was slave, got the error CODE 43 and could not install....
I then reversed again the slave card into master OC'd again and the cards recognized the drivers fine...
The driver is name : ATI mobility Radeon 4870/4870x2
CCC 9.8 shows the card are linked and crossfire enable but when i tried to run GPU-Z, the laptop froze and had to hard reboot... I tried over and over again but GPU-Z keeps on freezing my laptop... I cant run it anymore..
    Any thoughts???
The rig seems way faster tho... I will have to try 3dMARK...

Going to once I get 1.5 figured out. Downloaded two copies of the patch and it's saying that I'm already updated when I'm not.

Agreed, and I'm sure the issues with the drivers can be easily fixed too. And even if it were a bit more money (like it is now) I'm sure there would be people willing to pay for this machine IF the driver support was there.

Well, this isn't ASUS' first flagship notebook. There was the G70, which never really made a big dent in that market due to the GPU options.

Yeah that happened to me when I was playing with the drivers. GPU-Z will freeze and it will still run off 1 card (though single GPU performance is slightly better with the 9.8 drivers). Again, it's something in the driver package that's causing it (Cat 9.5 and up).

dont run gpuz, just run something like vantage or 3dmark. only so we can compare and get an idea of where you are with it.

ichime. i didn't install 1.5. i stopped at 1.41 because 1.5 cause a lot of errors. also, when playing online...if your running windows 7, you will get the api error and get booted from the online servers. it took me a while to find a server that was windows 7 compatible. haven't played in amonth, so hopefully more are getting on board with updating their servers. punkbuster needs to be updated as well, else you will get the automatic kick like 90 percent of the time. PR has like 3 big azz files to download as well. (at least i think it's 3)if you already got past on this stuff...then disreguard.

Yeah. Tried Cat 9.9, same problem (doesn't work). I have no doubt in my mind that if this machine accepted the latest drivers without issue, it would be the fastest gaming notebook period. It's a shame, but it is what it is.

The M17x in red is looking very attractive day by day, even though I cancelled an order for one earlier :(

    hey wanna hear something funny?

Remember when I said the voltages were preselected and that you can't change the voltages other than the values on the table? Well, that isn't the case, at least with RBE 1.21. I entered a custom value of 1.15, flashed both GPUs as master, and voila! booted up normally. Drivers are old (gonna install 9.4 now), but clocks are still stable at 650mhz. And things seem more stable now. No random crashes.

So there you have it; it doesn't like too high of voltages...

Also, john, yeah checked them out and they're doing very well. Could be the extra ram or 9.8, but it's doing very well. I actually obtained copies of the 4850's VBIOS, but it wouldn't flash because the SSIDs were different.

i haven't been this hyped about the ati cards in like years! and now your finally really getting somewhere! well done, mr gamer only guy...lol...glad you wanted to keep on experimenting else we would have never found out this latest turn of events.

was also wondering about the high voltages as well, but you answered that question. so now it looks like your really in the ballpark to get down to some serious testing..(sure hope you have time for all that when the time comes, because it's looking like it's getting pretty dammn close. :))

also, when you booted 650. did you test it to see if your stock scores at anything (games or benchmarks) went up. and if so..by how much. thanks in advance.

glad to add your second green light. nice work!

well, bad news; Installed 9.4 and same problem. Matter of fact, I tried installing 9.4 when the cards were flashed and it gave me a bluescreen.

So I guess it's drivers? It was ok with the stock drivers...

Hi Guys, I just posted my W90vp-X1 onto the NBR Marketplace, followed all the format / content rules... spent a couple of hours uploading, posting, editing... and now the posting is gone :-(

I guess I messed up something, but I don't have a PM/email telling me what I messed up. I would be happy to correct my listing to conform, but I need to know what I messed up :)

I thought I would list my W90p-X1 here first to give you guys a shot before I list it on Ebay. I received so much good info/support here since I picked up the W90vp-X1 back in February.

    Thanks!

To our (mods') defense, there is fair warning that such a thing will happen in the Market place rules http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=243273 :

It's necessary to have very strict rules in a place where (possibly large amounts of) money and valuable products change hands. Otherwise it can (and definitely will be) abused.

I tried to use your method with stock driver,master/slave and 9.4, master/master, but both cases I couldn't enter OS.
I change the voltage to 1.13, same result. Could you upload your modified BIOS(both master and slave) to let me know where are the problems?

Thanks BobXX/E.B.E., I understand the reason for the rules. I have been a member here for a long time, but don't post much, as most of the discoveries I have made have already been covered... 961 pages worth now :)

I need to sell the W90 soon, so I guess I won't be listing it here.

Maybe next notebook selling time I will have the required 20 posts :)

    Thanks again!, Scott

What I did is install the stock drivers on top of the stock VBIOS and then flashed them. It seemed to work, but not with the 9.4 drivers. For it to be effective, you'd have to change the 4th and last powerplay clock settings in RBE.

Edit: btw, has anyone tried Catalyst 9.9 beta from ATi in Windows 7? Apparently it has support for the Mobility 4870.
