Have him buy the N10 ($679 on Newegg) and tell him that you really want a small portable laptop so you can take notes in class. Also tell him that even though it looks small, it's faster than top-end systems from a few years ago.
Then build your desktop.

With what money would I build proposed desktoplol that's my whole hesitation is I don't want to spend anything so I figure I'd just take him up on his offer of buying a laptop. Hmm...I'll just talk to him about building a desktop and buying a netbook, maybe he'd come around. I think the new netbook processors from intel are coming out sometime this year too.

Id never consider this if I went from place to place with it but in the last 2 years I have done nothing but take it from home to work, set it up and it sits for 8 hours then it goes back home. That limited trip is not a big deal so I really like the idea of a big screen for photoshop, nice big speakers for listening to music, and the quad core cpu for rendering video and things.
I do not really need the gpu power as I have not played a game on my g50v in almost 6 months but I guess for the price its not like I am wasting money. Similar notebooks with a lesser gpu are only like $400 less, though there are supposed to be some cut down W90 models released at some point. -
Good point.
Lay out figures and prices and say how much more you'd be getting with X amount of dollars. That should work! -
Ok so get this I get a second email from Newegg, they are sold out!!! Again.

I didn't know Vicious was a Tampa res, I hail from the 941.

So who else besides me is thinking about putting 64bit Windows 7 on this bad boy?
I have yet to try it even though I was in the beta, but I hear nothing but good things about it and it seems to be compatible with all the Vista drivers for the most part. So I think its worth a shot. A new system is the best time to do it as there is no data to back up and no wasted time having to re-install applications and things. -
sounds like a sound idea.
-
Its a great OS but i removed it from my desktop for the time being as i didnt need 4 OS's. once it hits retail/oem whatever ill be grabbing it day one . If i had the W90 right now it would be on there for sure, but just for benching purposes
.
-
I'm running Win7 64 on my Asus A7t, and everything is awesome except I can for the love of god make the sound work!!!! Everything shows as working perfectly but no sound coming out!, reinstall vista, works again, so I just bought USB soundcard

Before I found the fix I almost got a usb sound card for my EEEMac -
all the benchmarks ran in this thread. can you guess who is missing from the list? out of 2,670 post and 54 pages
http://www.say-it-loud.com/w90bm.htm -
^^
Who? striker? -
lucky guess..lol
-
^^
I thought you're gonna say that the mission guy is the one with 20K score in benchmark -
nah. he is just missing in action do to cebit i gather..lol
but he has a benchmark 20kremember..lol
-
Wow thanks for that link
Just a suggestion or a thought is there any way to post that link into the origional 1st post? I only suggest this because of the length and number of posts in this thread. When I found this post last week I read about 5 or 6 pages including the first 5 and the last 5 and didn't see anything like that. I posted asking about this and given the nature of the problem W90 users were facing I was given some short replies. Anyways it's just a thought.
BTW I am waiting on a notify from Newegg to let me know when they are available -

i tried to keep us all out as much as possible...

-
well..it's like i said when this thing first surfaced...
no in experienced user
with a newegg out the door version
is going to hit 20k anything with a dual core cpu...period.
just not going to happen. you will have to up that anti quite a bit before your even going to be considered to even get close..... -
With a Quadcore at almost 4ghz 20k would be be a no brainer for the most part, as its so cpu dependent.
-
dont tell people that quad. it's all about the vga card all by itself..lol (yeah right!)
if i could over clock the system on this one....i would be up a few more points for sure. -
everything is misleading. who said it had to be accurate for you to run it.
-
Sorry to hear about the problems bro
. The whole benchmark thing and lack of patience is more based on the fact that this is the newest of tech and everyone is just excited to see what it's really capable of . i agree that benches from an unstable system are useless for the most part. Im not shocked you ended up with someone else's system considering Asus was telling people they didnt have any to ship out right away . Id call and complain to high hell that what you received was not new and you did not pay for a refurbished system, which is what it sounds like you got back.
-
Hey, if you have a uv light, open the dvd tray and shine the light on it. If you see TRICH911, you were lucky enough to get my RMA'd unit...I also dotted up the screws underneath with the uv marker.....
Seriously sucks man, I am sorry for you misfortune. -
i would take pictures of the serial number and machine itself. just to verify i dont get the same one back... they might have just did something to your old machine and gave it right back. -
-=$tR|k3r=-
pm'd you the # -
they also told you it was a single board with two gpus on as well, remember? of course that was never true to begin with now was it?
as for being "broke" dammn near everyone of the benchmarks ran we're ran from "broke" machines. which almost all of them got rma'd. so not sure what your getting at....
and as for the 15k, so far only one person has obtained that..with a "cough" broke "cough" machine. not sure if firebird24 is rma'ing his machine as well...
and asus said they got 15k but never went into detail as to how they obtained that. with a low end dual core or a high end one with a 24 percent over clock. 550/900 mhz on gpu's and no other software loaded but the drivers and the os. (which can be speculated as well) -
I should do a Dyno test on my Mustang out back that's only firing on 6 cylinders.
Although, it would be neat to have catagories of benchmarks. When someone new comes to the forums and asks for benchmarks we can give them the list.

they are posted on that list of benchmarks...
your benchmarks are right there in the middle of the list..lol -
Yes, but at the time we thought it was a perfectly working unit. Now they are null and void.
-
well some of us knew this already. this thing is broke. it was said early in the thread.
and that list was just for the people looking for potential marks... i wouldn't go get lost on that benchmark list. but hopefully asus will get right and correct the problems they now seem to be having. i was interested in it, but it has to many issues right now. and no one seems to be happy. (happy meaning not posting all the things that don't work) -
no debate.
hope that rma gets worked out is all! -
nice list john, good job
and: ive decided, that im not willing to spent any money to asus, dont like their attitude to their paying customers, their rushing faulty products to market, their doubtfull (or to me clear faked) benchmarkingtricks, not responding on emails, unprecise specifications (hd 4870x2 tp me is a 1 pcb-card!), their using cheap samsung gddr3 instead of available gddr5, and so on etc. pp.
i will not support such behaviour with my well earned money.
. But i will use a external keyboard anyway, so i can live with it.

You also cant deal with any other company that has ever published a typo on any of their advertising so that rules out Mac, Toshiba, Lenovo, Gateway, Sony, Acer, Alienware, NEC, Samsung, LGand Fujitsu and others. Remember, it was more NewEggs fault than Asus's.
You also cant buy from a company that has released a product with a problem that has taken more than three weeks to fix so that also rules out Mac, Toshiba, Lenovo, Gateway, Sony, Acer, Alienware, NEC, Samsung, LGand Fujitsu and others.
You also can't deal with any company that anyone has complained about the customer service so that also rules out Mac, Toshiba, Lenovo, Gateway, Sony, Acer, Alienware, NEC, Samsung, LGand Fujitsu and others.
All in all Asus is one of the better companies out there. Perfect? Nope. But better than most. -
I am in the process of RMA'ing. Asus got the computer on monday.....after it was NOT shipped overnight. I called yesterday to ask if there was any news on my computer. I was basically told "no, we'll call you later *click*." That was very frustrating! They've had it now for three days and no one's looked at it. The man I spoke to, turns out isn't J.J., but he said that J.J. was the one working on the computers, mine included. So I have yet to hear back from them, very upset. I was hoping they would have it all done and to send it out thurs. so I could have it by friday and for the weekend.
Striker, I'm sorry to hear about your repackaged computer. The same thing has happened to me in the past with a mac. Within 30 days, it went bust, and I was entitled to a new computer. What I received was also faulty and obviously repackaged, they didn't even bother trying to hide that fact. Apple then decided to ship me another repackaged computer, but without ram in it! Ultimately, I went into a store demanding to get a new computer! The manager gave me what looked like a fresh unit. I left, went home (mistake), and found that there was no battery! Went back angered to the point of bursting, asking that they immediately bump me up to a macbook pro. Instead, they gave me a genuinely new macbook (finally!) and an iPod. The manager said the iPod was a gift to keep me as a customer. Obviously, they failed! I don't stick around with companies that hassle customers like this.
*end rant*
I ended up not pushing for a replacement this time with the w90 because I feared this very situation. You have every right to get angry with Asus and let them know that you expect something in return for the frustration you've been put through. Good luck to you, hope all goes well. I'll report back when I get more news from Asus. -
and you would be the almost last one right firebird24?
exactly the point of a few who pointed this out....broke from day one.
and all the other people bought it because they we're told it was a great machine.(when it works) for me, that's fine, because ill sit and play with the thing till i cant get all the bugs worked out, then send it in for rma. most of the other people buying laptops are NOT IN TO THE DO IT YOUR SELF FIXING of a brand new 03-2009 laptop. buy it/ open it/ use it/ your done. not trouble shooting right out of the box.
and as far as newegg having them and then not having them...they may be doing like best buy did with the gateway line.. hold off till they get some really good working machines.(speculation) to many rma's create lots of problems. and im sorry but people dont want to spend 2200 bucks to have their machine sit in rma every other week. so they come here asking questions. and if you tell them it's great and go get it...they go get it and are mad because they listen to what was said here and are now rma'ing their machine. and quite a few of them sold them.
bottom line, new buyers need to wait till all the current problems are fixed! other wise you buy at your own risk...
the machine as all the potential in the world to be great, once the bugs are worked out. but great for a day is not my idea of a top of the line laptop..sorry...
i wonder how many people from this list did an rma...

Seriously the only gaming computer delivered what was promised out of the box was gateway 6860 series. All other laptops I bought and sold had issues out of the box. -
clevo aint on that list either...
-
I could care less about broken benchmarks but I think some people want to know exactly how broken it is. -
-
might think it was clever misspelled
hey, didn't you order one of these as well?? along with the dell... -
Im in full support of Clevo salad dressing , let me know when its available ill take a case -
Wow finally through the whole thread only took me most of a week.
$tR|k3r Sorry to hear the new unit wasn't all it was promised to be. Hang in there and thanks for your dedication to this thread/ the W90
To all the other owners thanks for all of your imput.
Now to decide if I want to take the plunge on a giant notebook while I wait for them to be in stock. Heck maybe I will be lucky and by the time I get to actually try to order one from NewEgg someone else (crosses fingers for Best Buy) will start selling them as well. I'd be on this thing like a fly on fecal matter if newegg had any return policy. But I've never had a laptop this big and am afraid it might be impossible for me to use on a daily basis. -
Miss Malevolent Notebook Consultant
I'm just waiting for the W90-Vn version. I called Asus and the representative said they don't discuss products that aren't out, but he told me that the Vn would be available late April/Early May.
I can't wait.
I don't care about overclocking, I just want something that works when I get it (like JohnKsss said), and that is powerful enough so that I can have my Sims 2 (and in June Sims 3) on maximum settings.
Don't need a Quad-Core...the 2.8Ghz Duo 2 is nice...and the price is very nice. W90-Vn will probably be a tad bit cheaper than the W90-Vp and I'm hoping a lot less buggy given the release.
