Nice lil write up that. And it makes me very tempted to jump on the quad bandwagon.
-
So simple question but I can post it in the Asus general forum if needed. Everyone keeps saying that if you buy an ASUS laptop from a big store like BB that you loose the Asus warrenty. If this Asus's policy? Is it stated anywhere? Does anyone know why Asus has chosen to do this?
-
Well, I am 90% settled on getting the Asus over the M17 . . . will probably order the one from Xotic, but with the Q9000 (way too much for the upgrade) and upgrade to a faster one when I return back home! The 10% unsettled wants the DDR5 from the M17 lol. The W90 is pretty much every thing I want, the only think I would like more is an LED screen and backlight keyboard haha, but I guess you can't have everything no can you!
-
I agree with your statement my only drawback on the M90 is I am not 100% sure that it isn't simply going to be to big for me -
regardless of cpu speeds, multithreading will ALWAYS perform better than single thread. (that means that whatever it is you are using supports multithread nativly)
i plan to stick a quad in my w90 in about a year, i figure the prices will be nice and low by then and i dont really need quad atm.
but wonderfull rightup (*wonders if anybody gets the subtle funnyness*) -
picture a quad like this...
example:
running a virus scanner scan on a dual core will bring gaming to major slow down.
running a virus scanner scan on a quad core will virtually be unaffected. you can set it to cores 0/1 and run your game off of cores 2/3
even them pesky task can be set to different cores..bottom line..quad is better in the short run and the long run. even a 2.0 ghz one. why? because in a system like this.....it can be over clocked. the choice should be easy... -
Can someone help me with a bit of an issue I am having. My asus laptop is not connecting to the internet. I disabled/enabled the hardware but it made no difference. Then I installed the newest version of the drivers which installed and it said hardware working properly but it still made no difference. After installing the drivers and trying to make it work, one screen said make sure the wifi switch in on(I don't think our comps have one though). The wireless light isnt on and im guessing the wifi is fine but its not turned on and I cant figure out how to turn the wifi on(I noticed the wifi icon on the keyboard but pressing it made not difference). So please if someone knows a solution please let me know. BTW i have the atheros drivers 7.6.1.122 installed and also my router was settup from my old comp (macbook pro OS X). Thanks in advance
-
did you hit the fn+ what ever key that turns your wireless devices on?

Yes i did. But nothing seems to happen. I know with the other keys(eg. brightness, vol) a little animation pops up but nothing happens when the wifi button is pressed. Is there another way to turn on the wifi??

All you need to do to test his is so easy, get gpu-z up and going, go to the temp monitor tab and run 3dmark06.
Exit out of it and look at the temps.
If the 2nd card did not move its not working, if its temp went up its working.
Same could be done with other programs to load the gpu or other programs to monitor temps but this is how I do it as I always have those two programs installed -
Driver Version atiumdag 7.14.10.0621 / Vista 64
That is what I am seeing when I run GPU-Z. -
can some one help with this?? -
I should add that GPU-Z sees both cards on my W90 as well..
"ATI Crossfire : Enabled (2 GPUs) (unsure on Vista64)"
So yeah something is amiss with your install $triker -
just try to do a driver update manually on each adapter. the screen should flicker and blink like 4 times if all goes correctly
-
btw anyone get the bios flash to work? if so, what program did you use.
right now I can't flash it, and keep getting the "boot block in file is not valid" error
Note: My laptop is locking up now. Had it sitting for a week and booted it to a locked windows screen. -
the original from the website did not work, the one the asus tech sent me results in a brick, and the third that another tech sent i cant test lol
wanna try it? -
-
Try flashing the BIOS using the Asus EZ Flash 2 utility in the BIOS.
Load the new bios .ROM file onto a USB key, and reboot the laptop.
When the ASUS logo first displays, press the F2 key a few times to enter the BIOS.
Skip over to the TOOLS menu and select "ASUS EZ Flash 2"
From there you can select your USB key and flash the new bios .ROM file from it. -
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
unless you did not even see the .rom file, and that could be due to naming or improper formating of the usb key. -

However, I do appreciate your outlook. I am curious, as I've seen some interesting stuff on the game Crysis, and I've never even seen it played. I assume it supports dual-core only, so will 4.0ghz be enough to handle this game (for a good playing experience, not low settings and 800x600), along with the dual 4870s?
-
Striker any luck on enabling your other card?
Update on my w90vp it was supposed to be shipped out today but still no info available from asus or email....i got this info from chat rep while i was in classlol and later dint get time to call and ask if they shipped or not as i just got back from work and chat is offline now
(I WANA PLAY WITH MINE :'()
-
don't think we have seen any crisis benchmarks yet. and crysis is gpu dependent, so a dual core is fine. but if you use your machine for more than just sitting around all day playing games...quad core is the better way to go.
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Remember what i said that the easier the gpu can render the more load is put on the cpu... thats how that works.
Crysis is so incredibly hard on the video cards that the cpu should not have too much work to do. I would be far more concerned with the fact that its an Nvidia endorsed game and that many people cant seem to get crossfire to work well with it. My desktop has never seen more than a 5% gain from crossfirex with my dual 4850's. I ran the benchmarks with 1 card and 2 cards and it was almost identical. However driver set 9.2 came out not long ago saying 20% boost in crysis... I have not played the game since then, I just updated to 9.3 today played some Dead Space and they seem to be working good.
to use the new drivers on a laptop though you have to modify the desktop drivers, i'll be sure to post the moded drivers here for everybody if I end up doing it.
im also thinking of doing windows 7 the newest 9.3 drivers state performance is now higher in windows 7 than it is vista. -
Sword and Scales Notebook Consultant
Maybe that's not very official, though. I'm not sure.
Also @ johnksss: I do a lot of things at once on my PC/Laptop, which was one of the reasons I was so interested in quad core in the first place. -
The review is up for the W90 incase i missed the post from someone else

then you have your answer...
well that was a....ummm...interesting review. -

Hi guys,
I've read a couple of bad stuffs from the Asus W90VP-X1 owners here in this thread. Do you think the W90VP-A1 will be any different? I'm hoping it's just an early stage release problem from Asus.
I'm honestly in the brink of clicking my final order button now. lol.
So, did your Asus W90VP deliver what was promised? I've read 2 reviews today and both are promising:

Questions:
Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound on GPU and CPU. Not much idea on this except this is suppose to make your laptops temp cooler or something.
Q: Do they apply this themselves? or do we have to do it manually? Coz I'm a neophyte in hardware techs...
With the CPU options:
1.Q9000= Standard
2.Q9100= $945
3.Q9300= $1,147
Q: Is it worth getting the Q9300 from Q9000? Will I feel that much difference for gaming? I don't mind paying for the difference if it means that much in games or future proofing this baby.
Lastly, 80GB Intel X25-M Multi-Cell SSD Serial-ATA II: $399.
Q: For gaming, Is it worth getting two SSD for these? Will it make that much difference in speed? Sacrificing capacity by that much worth it?
Or 2x 320 sataII 7200rpm will do?
Thanks a lot for all your help guys. Appreciate everything. -
If AS5 is an option then they would apply it themselves for you and yes it should make things run a tad cooler .
If money is no object grab the Qx9300 because it will help alot in games and other things now and well into the future.
Personally i would not bother with SSD's and the 320s will be more then adequate . -

Thats ok atleast you were smart enough to ask for guidance.
First of all being one of the first people to own a new model is risky, your going to be a pinoneer in a new technology and it may require you to troubleshoot problems yourself or deal with waiting for fixes to be created like drivers or updates.
If your not comfortable with that, I would wait a bit until some other people have done that exploring for you.
The CPU question, the qx9300 is most definitly going to be faster, but so not worth $1000 faster, thats nearly half the cost of the whole unit. Your going from 2ghz to 2.53, thats a 25% increase in cpu speed, while the qx9300 cost nearly 500% more... thats a VERY bad performance per dollar ratio. If you really want the faster cpu your better off getting a used one, or a es off ebay or something for almost half that.
The q9000 is very new so really nobody knows how well its going to perform, and if it does have shortcommings we may be able to remedy them with overclocking.
AS5 question, its just a good thermal compound its always been reguarded as the best and I use it on all my desktops but the notebook wont need it as you wont have any way of increasing the voltage or things of that nature that demand a higher cooling solution, nor does it have a cooling solution that can really take advantage of a better TIM (thermal interface material)
SSD question, SSDs are most definitly not worth it for gaming, games performance is not dependent on the hard drive. It loads a stage up and then its all cpu/ram/gpu, having a faster SSD just means a better load time. However when a game these days can use like 12gb do you see how fast your SSD is going to be out of space? Plus what advantage is loading into a game faster? if its single player the difference from 20 seconds to 35 seconds is nothing, if its multiplayer you still have to wait for all the other players to load or the round timer to count down.
SSD is definitely not for games. -
@Quadzilla
yeah man, I was thinking of getting the Q9300 as well but I'm still hesitant..specially now with Vicious post. lol
@Vicious
Nice. Thanks for the fast response guys. So no SSD for this one. And I guess If I have to get one, I'll choose the Q900 for now and maybe upgrade it later.
I see your point here with the W90VP being a new model and all and I totally agree. It just seems funny coz when i got my Asus M50SA last year, and on the release date as well, I didn't have any problems with it..hehe. -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Not saying there will be any, or the few that there were are not fixed, its just a general rule that the first ones to jump in the water are the ones that find out if there are sharks in it or not -
you pay for the best and as of right now. the extreme 2.53 ghz qx9300 which over clocks to nearly 4ghz pretty much speaks for it's self guys
flip side
the conscious buyer and what is deemed a performance gain/cash flow.
bottom line, get what you can afford. no matter what we all say here... -
Sword and Scales Notebook Consultant
Is there any word on the A1 other than mid-late this month. I hate to break it to ASUS, but it is mid-late March!
I guess I'm just overly stoked about it. Better to be safe than sorry, that's why I pre-ordered. -
Yeah...it is very nice indeed.
lol@sharks. so true hey! hahaha.
So wait, if I do get the Q900 now, is there still a chance to upgrade it later on? like say the to the Q9300 when the price goes down a bit?
What about the GPU? Is this upgradeble to a 4870 ddr5 one later on? -
my pixel is no where near that big.
that's one pixel or a cluster?? -
thats if:
1. they do actually come out
2. they fit the slot for the w90
2b. they require the same amount of power
3. you got alot of money to spend
4. it still might not work. only way to know is when somebody tries it -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Plus were are the q9000 overclock results? We do not have any yet! For all we know it will be right up there with it.
Its pure idiocy to say get what you can afford when the product is not worth the money, you would get far more out of your money saving that $1000 now and spending it for a new laptop in a year that is twice as fast as this one rather than spend it all now for a small boost in performance that will be no longer the top in 3 to 6 months.
Always buy based on price vs performance no matter how much money you sleep ontop of, with technology its the only way to go since it advances so fast and there is always such a huge premium for the highest product out at the time.
I myself may end up with a Q9100 or QX9300 in my W90 if the Q9000 is not good enough but no way am I paying the $1100 retail price tag. I'll get it for half that. -
never said everyone should get a qx9300 just used it as an example
i said up above that a quad would be better than getting a dual core. and in the end i said..buy what you can afford. -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Going balls out on the best thing is really going to hurt you in the long run (and it stings worse when some kid has a laptop half the price of yours with higher benchmarks in 6 months)
If you are wealthy enough to get the very best now and still get the next best thing when it comes out, thats great but your wasting money. Give it to a poor person like me -
you only live once..you decide when you choose to out shine the rest..
example:
i did that once with a np9262 and as of right now..it's still on top as a whole.
gaming and benchmarks so i apparently made the right choice thus far
no one will forever stay on top, this is true....but you can atleast say you where there.....once. -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
I was at one time the top score for both of our wprime charts, and I have a few gold/silver medals in orb. I always did it with cheap hardware and big overclocks/mods thats how real men do it. With there skill not there money. -
i bet that dont work any more...rotflmao!
nice come back though!
point me to those records. im always interested in seeing great accomplishments.
all in all vicious, im just messing with ya man. it's 3:3am here and im beat. and these server hiccups are seriously getting on my nerves. -
The Bios from Mrzzz essentially bricked my laptop. The post only shows 3gb and it will not finish the post but instead immediately power off. Well I guess its time to call ASUS.
-
^^ that sucks
Hey, anyone read Andrews review on NBR front page? Under the battery section he mentions the BIOS method for disabling one gpu caused issues and he had to do a factory restore to make it function properly again. Also claims 15.6k 3dMark while OCd. Y'all may have seen this, but I didn't dig. Point being, don't mess with the BIOS settings -
Always been an NVIDIA person, so I'm not real sure how crossfire works... at a later date would I be able to pull the cards and replace them with a SLi setup (dual 280 for example), or is the board/slots crossfire specific?
Plan on ordering an A1 from xotic today, just want to make sure this thing isn't already hitting it's ceiling so I can upgrade it as newer hardware is released. -
Wonder eh, the review on notebook review says that the sound from the notebook is bad
Quote:
Speakers and Audio
The speakers were somewhat of a disappointment. Most notebooks that have front and surround speakers with a subwoofer tend to sound fantastic compared to notebooks with only two speakers. The W90 speakers produce almost mono sound with little channel separation and muddy bass with the subwoofer adding to the mix. High notes were lacking and it sounded like our music was playing through an equalizer with the higher frequencies all turned down.
Is it true? I mean 5.1 channel, suppose it is good right?
