Pixels on a 18.4" @1920x1080 are going to be bigger than pixels on a 17" @1920x1200.

I thought the sound was decent once you go to the audio control panel and adjust everything. You can adjust the surround sound from stock. I noticed that If I used "powerful" and then raised the individual speaker levels up in the screen for speaker room adjustment
or whatever it's called(sry mine is still not back from RMA) it improved the sound quality.

I thought the sound was actually real good and had more than adequate seperation given the distance between speakers (talking notebook realestate here not a 15'x15' home theater with speakers being seperated in feet not centimeters)

    How about now?

Just kidding; congrats on your new laptop!

Those buying the A-1: would you post when you get shipment notification? I'll be on the road from April 3 to June 1 and would love to have one with me, but it doesn't look like that will work out. I'd need a week or so to set up and burn in the new guy, make sure there are no issues... sounds like I'd be better off waiting.

Also, any thoughts on Xotic versus Gentech?

I think justin@xotic said they were shipping on the 24th so you might still be able to grab one before heading out on the road . Might want to email them or call to find out .

Again getting the Qx9300 is based purely on a money is no object scenario , of course its overpriced . if you buy the machine with the Qx9300 you get something that others will not when they upgrade down the road(if they decide to) and thats a warranty, for some people that is a huge deal .

I could have sat there and wrote out 3 paragraphs of why you should and should not do the things you asked about, but i kept it short, sweet and simple .

Good luck on your decision what ever it may be :).

Thanks, I saw that but took it to mean his units would ship from ASUS on the 24th...

Either way I'm not sure I want to be "first batch boy," it hasn't worked out too well for others here. The quad CPU + Blu-Ray + second hard disk (which I'd want to set up as RAID 0) are a lot of new variables to add to the BIOS equation. Theoretically they shouldn't cause new issues, but "many is the slip between the cup and the lip" as Grandma used to say.

I believe the whole free shipping thing when you buy the laptop from Xotic is because its actually Asus who ships it directly to you(unless you change something) so you may have got it on the 26 or 27th .

Im sure they have most of the kinks are worked out by now , adding the Quad,Bluray and harddrive would be nothing to create more problems as they are very simple changes.

So how does the W90 overclock?

With a real Extreme chip in there, does it allow real multiplier OC'ing?
Without an Extreme chip in there, does the turbo function allow user defined levels of FSB setting (and ratio control?) or it is a percentage based OC?

You can keep the Q9000 (P7350x2). If I ordered a model from Xotic, that would be the first thing to get yanked. Even if a small performance hit, no thanks on the neutered cache. Then again, I'd never pay the $1100-1200 they charge for QX9300's. Worst case, $400-600 for a ES, best case is like Ofelas's QX9300 OEM for $599.00 in the For Sale section here on the boards.

For those that have the Newegg model, how exactly does the OC functionality work with your current T9600 chips?

    Before anybody contemplates retail prices:

    Go to eBay
    Type in Search, "QX9300 OEM"
    ??????
    Profit

Not sure how the OC is handled for xtreme as i havent see anyone who has both machine an xtreme cpu yet .

I agree i would never pay $1100 for a processor unless of course money was no object ie i was rich and didnt know much about computers or didnt want to be bothered . The original poster who asked about the Qx9300 didnt even know what AS5 was, so i doubt he would be unbolting his CPU and throwing a new one in :). If i snag the Egg model or the Xotic one the first thing that comes out of mine will be the CPU for a Qx93.

    press alt+f2
on the c:\ drive there is w90vp.rom wich is the 4040 bios reflash with that so it half works like it used to lol

or you can just say "hi asus. i have doa machine, plzkthxbai" and hope for a replacement or at least a repair (kind of a toss up as evident by striker)

im still waiting on mine, havnt heard anything yet. the online rma tracker apparently is fail.

is there a specific number to call to check on rma ?

Meh, if it comes to that I'll try it. Right now I'm trying to get newegg to just let me return it. It's really not worth this much of a hassle as I bought this laptop for fun and convenience. With this kind of trouble I can't say I trust the reliability of the system and am going to act in that accordance.

    good luck with that >.<
newegg is pretty hardcore with their return policy, especially with notebooks.
the only way they do an exchange for the same product (you will never get them to do a refund) is if asus (in this case) basicly sends a letter saying its doa lol

but i know how ya feel. 2300 for an unstable machine that locks up browsing the web kinda sucks lol

Well guys I finally got mine the other night. I have so far had no issues with it.
Keep in mind this is an early second batch W90. It does not have any updates installed from Asus, I tried to update the bios upon recieving it but it would not work.
As it stands now I still haven't changed anything from the day I got it, other than user settings and such. I have successfully used all the following:
    Navisworks (3d cad program)
    COD WOW
    Crysis Warhead (unpatched)
    Vantage
    Warcraft III
    Starcraft wOOt!!
    Farcry2
    HAWX
    Office 2007 Pro
    K-lite codec Pack
    VLC player
    Nero
    Quicktax
    Poweriso
    Winrar
And all the other goodies...essentially it has worked with anything I do to it.

I switch the turbogear in crysis warhead for fun, no lockups when fooling with anything in game or out. Includes closing laptop mid game opening, plugging unplugging, etc.

I haven't had a problem yet. Now this is coming from a guy who was expecting the worst. So I dunno guys, guess I got lucky (minus the shipping)

BTW Vantage score is with 17%OC

Ow and the only thing I don't like about it are the speakers...compared to my Dell E1705 the speakers blow, the subwoofer has no bass. And I wish it had an optical audio out.

The sub woofer? I suppose it must be activated first in the control panel, based on some review here... try to check the sound control panel
How bout the other 5 speaker, is it good? Have some treble in it?

Well, from the one that was Oc'd to almost 4ghz using a QX9300 chip, the multiplier level was stock, but the FSB was bumped.

Commander, go into the realtek control panel in the taskbar. I don't have it in front of me, but I think in the room correction tab you can boost the subwoofer. They have it at maybe +5, put it up to the max +10 for more full bass. And then click it on and off to hear the difference, it's big!

I'm "awaiting testing." That generic answer isn't very helpful, I'm obviously awaiting testing. I keep being told that they will call me as soon as possible with some results. Well the days keep passing. A supervisor even had the nerve to tell me to be patient. Needless to say after all this time, 3 weeks, I'm all out of patience. I realize we're all in this boat, but I can't help being disgusted by all this.

It was shipped to california, and this is definitely a repair, not a replacement. The answers I get are nonsensical, I have moved up the chain with no avail. My questions are perfectly reasonable, not too specific, not too vague. It's degrading to have to jump through these hoops. I can't believe Asus is getting away with this.

Hopefully J.J. will call me like I've been told he should. Sadly, he will not have a calm or happy customer on the other end.

I don't want to be critical Striker, but how can you still defend Asus? In my opinion, they have not been rock solid in any way to you or any of us.

Hello Forums Members and W90VP Owners,

I have decided I would like to try and further assist you outside of the workplace as much as time will allow. I have had the opportunity to run extensive tests on both hardware levels and software environments on the w90vp in both a 400 build bios environment as well as 500 build bios environment. If you have any questions as to process or procedure to the rma process or any topics please post your questions and I will attempt to clarify them as much as possible and if within information that can be released.

    Nice.

Can you enlighten us on the quad core functions of the notebook.

    As in

    > What the turbogear/overdrive program will bring the Q9000, Q91000, & QX9300 to in the highest setting?

I would assume its a flat 17% but would like to know if thats true.

Also for the QX9300 can we change the cpu multi in the bios or is it stuck with the default?

Yup did that already...still not near as good as my old E1705 :(

    Bench's 1783fps!!

Sub was always activated...had this issue with my E1705 so I've played with bass alot...I want more!!

I like the asus boot sound...but the sound I find is squelchy at max volume with high pitch notes...but i suppose I just want louder and more bass...either way it'll do what it was made for ;)

I have to look into the bios again but I think its dated Oct.24 if I remember correctly...

Hope you get your issues solved.

On a side note had my first problem with it today...BUT!!! It was a vista issue. Sent my system into a configuring updates/reboot loop that safemode couldn't fix. Had to put in my vista x64 ultimate disk to enter the cmd prompt and delete pending.xml. So needless to say, not a happy camper. I would advise turning restore points on to anyone, I always forget with a new computer, woulda saved me alot of anger and frustration. Darn you vista!

Lol on another side note downloading win7 for my big comp tonight...had an issue with my oc with my raid drives last night too...computers have not been my friend lately ;) . If all goes well mabe I'll put it onto the w90 as well...we'll see.

I was going to put win7 on mine but since the termination date is so soon now not sure I want to go through all the trouble just to lose it and have to redo everything on vista later.

I'll probably just wait for retail.

how the hell you guys get 17k stock? lol
any answers to the driver problems?
glad to see someone took notice to us saying the bios had a major part in things.
glad to see you made your way over to help reassure the asus users, because it sure was tough times around here!
any insight is welcomed with open arms and thank you for what ever time and help you have shown and are showing now.

Where'd you hear it from Justin? I called them yesterday to hook up my military discount ( ;) ) and I asked about a date and the friendly lady said it had already been pushed back once from mid March, now to the end of March. If it's the 24th, maybe I can hope for an early April delivery out here in the lovely sandbox!

    hi,

1.) why is it not possible to flash the bios with the ones provided on the asus website or the ones sent via email from asus tech-support?

2.) did you already detect what exactly was wrong with the ones from the 1st batch? any hardware related problems or just a faulty bios?

3.) why havent these products not been tested before pushing faulty them to the market?

4.) how can you get 17k 3dmarks out of the box?

Yet another person who has decided to purchase this...now I just have to decide if I want to go with the X1 or the A1. I'm guessing with a military discount the A1 would be right around the same price as the X1. :p

Oh just for informational purposes I have been following this thread since it first began. My old laptop, dell 1705, died on me. Well not really died I know the videocard went and I could put a new one in it, but why do that when I can get a new one. I've been torn between this one, a dell 1730, or a m17, yea I know they're dells, but my past experiences with dell have proven to be positive at least over the past 2 1/2, 3 years I've owned the 1705. Upon waiting for this system to be stable and fixed due the botched bios in the first batch I came to the realization that I didn't want a laptop that was all flashy and lights up like a christmas tree, just something simple and direct.

I RMAed mine to newegg for a refund on the grounds of their GDDR5 advertisement that was up for a while. I had just been having too many problems with my unit. I think im gonna wait a while and see how things develop and wait till some people start seeing some rock solid systems.
