djgiron, very nice photos! that 18-105 served you well.

105 is probably all I need as well, but i'll kick myself around if i have another time where I fall short. I did a photo comp and I used a rebel xti with a sigma 18-50mm 2.8 on it and while I was liking the 2.8 a lot the 50mm just was not long enough for a lot of my shots so I was upset and had to crop them and hope for the best.

the sigma 18-200 OS is like $320 on ebay so seems like a good lens to get on a budget.

Definitely, a quality vacation captured with excellent photos.

Also, here's a gallery of a few of my pics, situated in between a little photo-comic I'm doing, and some other random business. http://www.flickr.com/photos/swordandscales/

I do not really have anything nice to share but for what its worth here are the shots I took for that IGH contest with the Rebel & Sigma, I had to take shots of or about the hotel.

    http://picasaweb.google.com/masakakoi/IHGContest?feat=directlink

Here are a couple of shots I took at work

    http://picasaweb.google.com/masakakoi/CanonRebelXTiWSigma1850mmF28Macro?feat=directlink

Now I did go to the state park the other day and took some shots with my d70 last week, I'll have to share those for sure but I have not even taken them off the camera yet to see what they came out like. Its probably my first excursion with my camera outside of computer hardware pics and some shots of the kids.

I can't see them here at work, sadly, unlike Djgiron's pbase photos.

BACK ON TOPIC! ASUS W90-A1 T-minus 4 hours and 10 minutes until we might hear something interesting!

this whole thread is off topic almost :p I mean its like 3000 posts. So its pretty much the w90 owners or future w90 owners chat lounge, with military preference :p

(where every pizza comes with peperoni & 9mm bullets)

are you looking to get a w90?? you have the 9262 wich was a model I was looking at not too long ago it treating you well (and how much did it set you back?)

actually thinking about the owners lounges thats exactly what this is, its a lounge you cant go off topic, but should try not to get too random. So if you find something good to talk about that we can talk about like cameras we just went through thats good, but dont go start talking about how your dog just ate a cat or something that would be more appropriate for the off topic section.

    this is true...lol
it set me back about $3400.00
it's been a great machine thus far. it only had one problem..a half working 9800m gtx which was replaced at no cost to me.
yep, looking at the w90 because of fsb/cpu over clocking. this is why the 9262 is falling off this year. if clevo would open that and allow for the gtx280m. i wouldn't even think about getting something else. the w90 looks sporty while the the 9262 just looks sturdy like a brick. looks has no baring to me though. if i whoop that others guy azz..who cares how you look doing it..lol. i had looked at the whitebook, but after testing was finished, desided to stick with my 9262. now the w90 is out. im looking into it as well, but will wait till the m980nu is out and fully tested before making my final call.

hm, there must be some kind of thermal protection. on my old aw aurora (based on arima w830) the fan of the gpus had a malfunktion, and at about 110°C the sytem turned off. several times. but no defekt.
thats why i clean my systems all 4-6 months-of course nb included. renew the as and clean the dust.

Oh its not getting the 260/280? I thought it was one of the models that was getting it. I do not know the sager/clevo lineup very well it gets sort of confusing. I know they are like bricks but usually well built (well I read a lot of heat problems here and there) I definitely give the w90 my thumbs up for style they made it look good but not too flashy.

I am a bit turned away from nvidia at the moment selling thousands of defective 8000 series cards and then doing nothing about it to compensate the buyers. then now they were unable to keep up with amd on the die shrink and make a true gtx 260/280 mobile version so they just are overclocking and rebadging the old stuff basically. I feel its a bit dishonest. The most advanced card tech wise is the ATI 4860 and I would prefer it to the 4870s actually, with GDDR5 its probably faster than the 4870s in the w90.

they all have shut offs, but the cpu generally has a higher tolerance for heat than a gpu in a laptop. not always true, but in most cases.

when we speak like this...it's the majority not the every single person is going to burn up his product. :) i ran the cpu with no fans to see how high it would get and what would happen. and do you know what happen? nothing. it shut off. try that with an amd chip and it's history the first time.

all these things are just guidlines....nothing more.... :)

nope, the d901c isn't getting them, but the d900f/m980nu are.

we shall see...because the 4870/4850 have yet to kill a 9800m gtx. they are still trading blows back and forth. (im sure it's drivers)
edit: but when ran with AA enabled..9800m gtx is taking a serious azz whoopin' in quite a few games.
ah yes, the 4860...just waiting to see how well they do in the general public. things may get a bit interesting when these hit...

Nice shots Vicious. Fortunately I still have a few weeks until I am ready to buy a system . . . but at least I have it narrowed down to 3 possibly 4 systems haha. Too many decisions with too little information right now.

There is no harm in waiting to make a better more informed decision. Often times its right after you make a hasty decision that you find there was another better option you did not know about before. Thats the worst.

Too bad I can only review what I buy, or I would have a more wide spread knowledge and be able to help you choose other models better. I can break pretty much anything down into price vs performance and evaluate it that way and thats how I buy pretty much anything computer related.

    Hello Everyone,

I just received my VP-XP and I love it... so far everything is running well except for the fact that one of the speakers is dead I believe. The right surround. Has anyone experienced this or is it just configuration.

Try to test it at the control panel maybe?
Go to control panel, choose sound, choose your card and speaker at playback, click configure, and then test...

I sincerely doubt that they just send out laptops without testing them first.

    Also, T-minus 30 minutes for a possible A1 update.

Once I get home from work today I think I am going to reinstall the audio drivers... If that doesnt work.. I will connect it up to my stereo system just to see if it is an audio board issue and not just a dead speaker. I was fortunate not to have crashes. I ran 3dmark 06 and it went through fine. I have my fingers crossed that it is just a bad audio driver installation.. but haha I doubt that will be the case (-_-)

Nothing new yet on Xotic. Sad faic. Then again, I'd rather have something that works just fine out o' the box, rather than have to deal with it myself.

When I posted that 30-31st post from Xotic, that was there, but he also came on here a day afterwards, and said the 24th, and said that this shipment included the improved BIOS update which caused the first delay. So, just thought I'd correct myself there.

ASUS has found yet another way to further my bad taste of them by not shipping my RMA overnight. You figured since I purchased it on 2/20/09 they might not want to save the extra couple dollars to perhaps salvage a bad situation. I am not going to go through a complete recap of my story as it is similar to many others. But WOW, I feel like I am trying to get some free government benefits with all the calls, delays and overall poor comunication.

    Their customer service is terrible!

Even if this unit shoots gold dvd's out of it, I am so disenchanted by the whole experience to NEVER recommend them to anyone.

Sorry for the rant, I had to get it out....

If you browse to the Newegg site on a mobile device (such as the iPhone) and look up the W90Vp-X1, it'll say "Out of Stock (ETA: 3/27/2009)".

Anyone else notice this? Is this at all valid?

Dunno if its valid, but i just tried it on my Iphone as well and got the same results 3/27 . Pretty strange that this info would not be available on the webpage itself using a PC.

i can understand where your' comming from man.

they could really use some work on the bugs in their system, like the rma tracking thing never worked for me, i talked to a guy last thursday he said it was shiipping out monday and id get an email with tracking info etc

never got the email, so monday evening i used live chat and spoke a nice guy name patrick, he looked it up and said its still listed in "in repair" so i was a little miffed, and he said it would ship out either today (wich was monday) or tomarrow (wich waws the day i got it) and that he was sure of it.

i got the lappy the next day (tuesday) so it had indeed shippped out before 5pm PST (fedex overnight cutoff time) but due to lack of communication it was kind of an unknown.

as far as the techs go, i only spoke to two guys, some indian sounding guy and JJ.

jj pwn faces'. he knows computers unlike 99% of the techs. in the world.
the indian sounding guy should use a mac, he didnt know the diff between the post screen and windows :(

cant really fault that, im just being bitter about it...... everybody has to start somewhere, so im sure he is just learning.

as far as quality of the support goes, its STILL a 9/10. communication however, thats a different story.

Well came home and reinstalled all the audio drivers and same thing. However the sound board seems fine.. because I connected HDMI out and my stereo system was able to recognize each channel. I am contemplating if it is worth it to send it in to get repaired ... considering I will not have my baby for what a week or more? Doh! hope it comes back in once piece :). Actually I still have not loaded any games on it yet... only thing I tried was 3d mark. Let me try some games on it now before I lose it :p

I would expect the date of 3/27 (maybe even sooner) to be valid based on my latest call with ASUS. I am one of the unfortunates that RMA'd one of the first (2/19/09) NewEgg W90s. The individual who handles DOA replacements said they were expecting a shipment to land tonight so I would have my replacement in the next day or so. So this is probably the same shipment that is destined to either NewEgg or Xtopic or both.

So.. is it a software problem (drivers) or is it a hardware problem?

I got mine today from ebay. 2 weeks old the person claimed that was selling it. Boot it up and first thing it does is lock up. I had to reset the bios with that little hole on the back.

I called asus and they set me the new bios. It wouldn't even boot with the new bios. Froze about 1/2 through the boot process. So flashed it back to 0404.

I put a clean version of my 32 vista ultimate on it and downloaded all the drivers from their website. So far so good.

Asus just called me and said they would replace my unit.

So.. Is it bad hardware? Will eventually freeze up when booting into windows? Did a clean install with newer drivers from asus's site fix the problem?

I dont believe they ever said specifically what the problem is ie hardware or software . The fact they want to ship you a new unit to me would lean towards a hardware issue personally.

I believe Asus warrantys are transferable and the original purchaser may have never even registered it, which would make it easier as well . Hopefully the person he bought it from gave him the packing slip/invoice .

So some interesting things have come to light for me.

I'm running Vista 32 Ultimate from a clean install on a OCZ Vertex SSD 120gb drive. All drivers from Asus's website.

I just managed to update to the 0502 Bios. In my earlier post I stated I tried this bios update earlier in the day that Asus's emailed me. It did flash, but it would freeze 1/2 through the boot process.

So i tried again. I'm doing this from a USB flash drive, NOT from the C:\ drive. After flashing the bios I imediately went back into the bios (f2) and loaded the default setup. Rebooted and it booted up just fine.

Now to point a few more things out.

    3dmark06 running 0404 Bios = 13526

    3dmark06 running 0502 Bios = 13791

    4870 Info:

    BIOS Version 011.009.000.000

BIOS Part Number BK-ATI VER 011.009.000.000.000000

    BIOS Date 2008/10/24

For the people who received their W90's with the 0502 already flashed.. What's the info on your 4870's?

I really dont think there's anything wrong with the hardware. I think it was a bios/driver issue. I'm going to call the tech supervisor tomorrow and see if I can find out any more info.

So.. who wants me to try and get the 4870's in my soon to be sold Alienware M17? :) :)

I sent them my paypal receipt. The tech guy said basically his supervisor was doing me a "solid" because there's no way to prove it was purchased within 30 days.

Another thing i just tried with 0502. You can't load it from the hard drive.. you'll get the block error. It has to be done from a USB flash device.
