Displayport is Dell's proprietary crap. I'd rather have an across-the-board standard. I haven't checked but I'm betting it's 1.3 HDMI.

    No it's not.

"DisplayPort is a digital display interface standard put forth by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) since 2006."

So what's that mean when half the screen is white, and the other half is psychadelic colors. Cooked the GPU?

Could be. Hook it up to an external monitor and see if it does the same thing.

It comes up like that when you reboot? What you need to do is hit "F8" when you reboot. Select the option that says windows vga mode or something like that. Is it all f'ed up looking even in the bios/post?

If not, it is a driver issue. Go into windows vga mode and reload it. If it does that funky stuff in the bios and post, you are...................... :(

Recieved my system yesterday afternoon and had time to play WoW on it for 4 hours (regularly scheduled raid).

Just a quick observation on the cooling system for this machine: it seems to work very very well. HW Monitor showed temps for both CPU and GPU staying below 65* for the entire evening of gaming. Also, more importantly, no surface except a small portion on the bottom panel got warm. Fantastic job Asus!!!

Also, I didn't have much time to go through all the disks but is one of them a Windows 7 disk I can do a clean install from? The bloatware included on this machine is horrendous!

Nope, still have the screen is jacked up.

I loaded the win 7 recovery disc, and I can drag the popup to the R side, but there is no .exe in there. How do I start the reinstall? Like you, I would get a message that said something like (your color settings have been altered), but then futuremark would run fine.

I am seriously afraid for you g73... If it is jacked in Vga mode, it is most likely a fried GPU. One last test... Please go into the bios (not sure what it is on the g73 yet, maybe f10/f2/f1 or something). If you have the fried screen in the bios, you are SOL. :( :( :(

What did you try to overclock the gpu to!?

I'd pull ALL power - battery, AC, etc.

Hit the power button and hold it for 30seconds.

Leave it for an hour or so with no power to it,

See if that helps any :(

    Hello everyone!

I have been creeping here for nearly a month now, and post after post, thread after thread I decided now is the time to post.

I am up here in Canada, Saskatoon Saskatchewan to be specific. I have been told from my local reseller that G73's should be hitting customs today, and shipping out next week to stores.

My question is quite simple. Anyone from Canada have their hands on one of these beauties yet? I'd rather order online then wait the 10-14 business days and pay $1815 CDN locally if I can shave off some waiting time.

Congrats to you lucky individuals who aleady have one.

Also you WoW players out there with this comp; tell me you're getting more the the 6fps I get on my Gen 1 Dell XPS walking through Dalaran (lol).

If that is happening outside of Windows it's a bad sign. To confirm it you would need to hook up to an external monitor. Do have a friend or family member with one?

Yeah, I don't recommend overclocking over 800. I tried 825 and the game froze, so I immediately brought it back down to 800.

It's too bad you didn't see that evensen had asked me to try 850/900 and I had replied it's a no go, gray screen, reboot.

Good luck with this, lucky for you, G73 has a 1 year accidental!

Hey all did you see that OmegaDrivers is back? I remember when I had the ATi 9600, I used his drivers almost exclusively and they were better than using the mobility modder. So this is nice!

Jeder: WoW is a MMORPG. These games are not the same as FPS or simulators, they are more CPU intensive and not just graphic intensive. Think about it. I got a friend who has a i7 920 and the HD5970 desktop rig, he gets around 60 FPS with shadows on high. WoW graphics is not optimized very well for the latest hardware, more like optimized for the older hardware. You should be fine, just turn shadows off to low. But I still wouldn't expect 100 FPS, 60 FPS sounds about right in a raid situation. That's plenty right?

Not sure if this would help at all, but there is a Emergancy Shut Down Button on the left hand underside. Now,when I had the keyboard failure the Asus Service Rep told me to turn the unit off, unhook the power cord, take out the battery, and hold that button down for 5 seconds and then set the system back up.

Sorry, I don't think that will help... but desperation call for all attempts

Man, I hope you find the fix..

Ati clock tool returns the clocks back to normal after reboot. He should be ok. Also, I think he bought from Newegg which makes the RMA a little easier and less transparent if Asus even COULD see if he overclocked. Newegg will just take it back and exchange it as bad.

I am really hoping I see a post from him soon that says "ok, all back to normal now!". I feel bad for him!

I am thinking a BIOS reflash might solve his problems.

He needs to hook it up to an external or hdtv to see if he can use it that way.

Still haven't fixed the problem. Screen is still jacked up while in BIOS.

I have talked to Asus, and tried removing the battery, pulling the poer cord and resetting via that little pin hole on the underside. Clocks have reset, so that shouldn't be a problem. Also, I bought from one of the resellers here on the boards, not Newegg. I am now trying to download the most updated driver for it to see if that will help. But I would like to reinstall Windows to bring it back to factory condition.

Does anyone know how I can get the revovery CD to start? There is no .exe file on it.

Normally you should try to boot from the windows recovery DVD and follow the steps on the screen, as an IT Technician I would recommend you check all settings on bios if you ever changed or touch and reset it.

    Promising? Yes and No...

It could mean that your LCD panel flipped and and went bad. That is so weird. Overclocking the gpu would not have done that.

The bottom line though is still that you will probably end up having to RMA unless some type of miracle happens.

Sounds like a bad inverter or panel.

There is no point in restoring it as it isn't a software problem at this point, but your welcome to try.

Call Asus or your reseller and get a replacement or refund.

It seems that the settings of the Graphic Card are incorrectly configured, try to change the display settings or best try to do a system restore to an earlier time.

    Hope that helps.

LaptopVideo2Go's owner has a Dell with an Nvidia that overheats once in a while. He's done this 3 times when it goes bad. He pre-heats the oven to 180 and bakes it for 10 minutes. It has worked for him 3 times now.
    - Of course I believe he does this because the laptop is now out of warranty.
    - I have had a GPU fry on me twice on the Asus G1 and had it replaced twice. RMA the laptop is your best choice I think. Asus service is excellent!

To get the Recovery CD to boot you need to go into the Bios and set the bootup to start from the DVD drive first before it starts up from your HDD.

    Morning Ziddy!

I do realize that WoW is a MMORPG, and I know it is more RAM and CPU intensive. I was wondering though what the processor would be like compared to an older CPU but Dual Core. 4 processors are not all used when playing WoW however I do like to dual box characters and accounts, which is why I have pre-ordered this computer. 4 processors for this reason should be better then 2 (I hope).

As for 60 FPS haha, I'd have been happy with 30. You don't want to know what I have had to deal with. It has led to a brief respite from the game, and my skin has enjoyed sunlight again haha.

I am also looking at future gaming as well. I believe the rumours are the new Online Dungeons and Dragons MMORPG will need DirectX11.

Since I am already writing a post, I was wondering. For all you FPS gamers out there I'm sure refresh rates are important for your survival needs. Which external monitors do people recommend? I do have the Blue-Ray player, so I'm thinking a nice 23"-24" screen should work. I have seen a couple nice ones on the Asus websiite, but then again Samsung and LG make some pretty nice models as well. My price limit is $500.

    Thanks again!
    J

Just an FYI. I don't think the drivers Asus provided are compatible. They work, but DX11 does not like them. If you do into dxdiag, under the video tab you can enable and disable various settings and I always disable the AGP acceleration. But not with these drivers, no option to change settings. I then went into desk.cpl and under the troubleshoot tab, you can accelerate hardware and enable comb etc... Yeah none of those are available either. So I'm hoping either using the mobility modder soon or OmegaDrivers will fix this. Can't trust these laptop manufacturers to provide the best drivers.... maybe Alienware does, but Asus is terrible for this.

Yeah I've been using laptopvideo2go for my nVidia needs for a while and I've read each time his GPU fails he bakes it and it works. He did it again for a 3rd time few weeks ago.

Oven trick is for a bad gpu.

Now, obviously, 0100's gpu isn't bad because he had no issues when using an external display.

    Don't bake it....

LOL...I should try this on my old Z71v. I think that has a bad GPU...or something. The screen just flickers constantly or just turns completely black. I should probably hook it up to an external monitor and see what happens.
