lol thats funny.... I doubt it ever once hit that hot, your desk would have started on fire!! Also, look at your Average temps, there inline with your first column and just slightly higher, so I would dare say max you actually saw would be 65-67

How does the screen look when just reading text? I've got the Dell 1747 with the B+RG screen and everything is crystal clear. I had one with the lower resolution and my eyes couldn't stand to read on it.

I figure Dell is never going to fix the throttling problems. But that doesn't annoy me as much as the cycling fan. On, off, high, low. And all in the time it takes to type this reply. Nothing else running.

I've heard it was good from what I've read. I think ViciousXUSMC had a mini review on it.

No issues here. I was browsing for a few hours last night while we were watching TV. Knock on wood, I haven't had any crashes, but outside of the BD player, my X1 is totally stock still.

PCmall and Macmall claimed to have it in stock as of Saturday and Sunday, and I checked today and it's not in stock anymore. I'm glad I didn't order from them. I will just assume if they had any in stock this weekend, it all got sold out fast. I guess in an hour I'll find out if powernotebooks has them in stock either...... If not then I'll just order the X1 from newegg.

Thanks. I'm installing a new hdd and fresh install of Win7. I'll see if it goes away.

I ran tests against my CPU and memory and those had no issues.

It's crashing for me all the time too.

I don't have a fresh install though. This is the SSD from my G51 with the Nvidia gtx260. I used driver cleaner, but I believe I may have some residual issues.

    Version 3.5.7

The funny thing is I haven't even tested Internet Explorer to see if that crashes. I would rather have firefox crashing on my 3-4 times a day than have to use IE. haha

    Hello,

This isn’t a review but just a rundown of my experience with laptops and the G73 for the past week.

I’ve been a laptop user for all my needs for the past 10 years or so. I have used laptops as my entertainment, school, work and media station. For media I enjoy watching HD anime (anime community was on board with x264 well before I saw anything live action with it), fiddled with some encoding. For audio, I love music. I use laptops with USB output to a dedicated DAC, headphone amp and a 2 channel amp via to vintage JBL speakers. I have the laptop connected to the TV. Laptop does it all for me, never had a need for a desktop.

As a college student and now working in non-profit my budget for computers is always limited and I try to buy the most I can possible afford and keep it for a few years. For long time portability was very important as I used the laptop to take notes, do work in the library while at University. For work, non-profits have almost guaranteed the oldest machines you’ll find in an office setting. Laptop comes very handy as the two places I’ve worked allowed me to use my own computer. I went with 14” 4:3 screens for a while then 15.4”

My experience with the G73 has been different from the past. I decided I wanted a larger screen. I still didn’t want to buy a immobile, stationary desktop. Still wanted to use it as my media station and be portable enough to take to work. But the greatest benefit of the G73 has been the price. I paid less for my Asus G73 than I did for the G1 while getting the best ram, HDD, screen, GPU and CPU I’ve seen offered by any company standard. Even when ordering a Sager/Alienware I won’t find faster HDD/Ram/CPU/GPU. It’s impressive.

For gaming use I have overclocked the GPU with AMD’s GPU overclocker. The setting is 799/1100 and it’s been very stable with core temperature around 75-80. Speeds are great.

This would be a first being able to play the latest games at high settings and native resolution on a laptop. So far I have played Crysis Warhead, and frame rate was smooth throughout, never experienced any stuttering or any slowdown that impacted the game play negatively. Killing Floor is a joke with 85 FPS @ 16 AF and 8 AA, everything highest. I played a few hours of FEAR 2 so far, and with everything high with 4AA it looks awesome, and no worries on stuttering or slowdown. Mass Effect 2 is an excellent game. And been getting on average of 60 FPS in that one. I will not try an MMORPG on this yet as I have called it quits on those games. No more time.

For office work, has been great. The keyboard is large and ample for quick typing. The large screen allows me to have multiple windows open making research, database work, and general work very easy. Photoshop CS4 is a breeze, fans don’t even go on for this work so far. The fan is great for office work. It doesn’t disturb you while working. In fact I hear the desktop computers around me more clearly than I do with the fan in the office. The sleek, black look of the G73 looks very business like. Anyone who has to take their notebook to meetings, you will look very awesome while doing so.

The backpack that arrived with the G73 is all black to my relief. Having bright green on the G1 backpack was not something I appreciated. While the backpack appears flimsy and dull, it’s surprisingly comfortable to use. The G73 fits in and is taken out with ease. The second compartment holds the powerpack, my headphones (very large Audio Technica AD900), a book to read on the train and my lunch for work. There is still space for more. The way the backpack sits, it feels as if far less weight than it is. Making walking to the train and to and from work from the subway a pleasant stroll. Because of the benign looks of the backpack I have no fear of attracting unwanted attention also. Backpack is sturdy and I hope to use for as long as I have the G73.

The mouse is great, if you are not a gamer, prolific internet browser or other intensive computer work. It’s perfect for someone you may know who only needs two buttons and the a scroll. Give it to them.

You may have problems with your roommate or significant other. My girlfriend wants this computer. She is amazed by the screen and dazzled by the lighted keyboard. Be prepared to defend your G73 from your roommate or anyone else!

To conclude this is a perfect laptop if your needs are the same as mine. If you need the top of the line laptop for gaming needs, then I suggest waiting for a dual cross-fire HD5870 rig. But if you need something that looks great, light weight, easy to transport with ample power, and on a budget, I can't think of a better machine.
    - But even for gaming, should be fine. Gaming studios I believe have found something that makes them more profit while more enjoyable for gamers. Games that can last a long time. They provide expansions to keep interest in the game, minimal development while maximizing profit. Blizzard with WoW, Starcraft and Diablo 2 have definitely paved the way in this regard. I believe great games onward will be playable for years, not just weeks or months. I'm sure there are many gamers like myself who do not want to keep finding a new one and like to have a perpetual avatar to improve upon. Diablo 3 I am waiting, :p

Aye... I should probably do a fresh install like I usually do on a new system. I thought the intel chipset form my G51 (i7) would make just swapping over pretty easy after I driver-cleaned the Nvidia stuff off. I should know better.

How's that packpack? Is it durable? I haven't bought a packpack in a long time so I don't even remember how durable they are. I've never paid more then $20 for a packpack, so I bought mostly cheap ones.

Is it weath proof or water resistence? Since I oredred the X1 I'm gonna need a backpack and the price seems good on this one. I thought you had to pay $50 or more for a good packpack. I'm assuming it must be a outdated version and that's why it's so cheap?

The one thing I still don't have is a hard drive caddy. I realize I've mentioned this in the past, but can anyone assist with this? Having not owned ASUS laptops in the past, I don't know how feasible it is to use one from another laptop. Many of them look as if they only have prongs on one side and they need it on both to make it stable.

Is there any way anyone can assist with this? Obviously kind of a long shot but I have a HD just sitting here until I find some kind of fix. I really don't want to just use 2-sided tape since it's not SSD. +rep to anyone that can help with it.

Just Bought this case at Best Buy.

    Targus Messenger CityGear laptop case

    Price: $ 44.99

The G73 just fits. A little bit tight, I'd say snug.

There is enough room for the Brick, mouse etc.

    Dimensions:

    Exterior: 19" x 5" x 14"
    Laptop compartment: 16.5" x 2.17" x 12.6"
    Weight 3 lb

There is no zipper at the top so like I say the close to 13" depth of the computer just fits. It doesn't stick out.

    Looks nice there.

I prefer backpacks. I hate having a large laptop slapping against me while I walk and if I'm in a rush to catch the train/subway or the bus, it's even worse. Also backpacks are easier on the shoulders.
    - The other plus, bags like the one you bought, just screams to anyone hey look I'm carrying a laptop! I know while in University, it was constantly recommended to use backpacks with space for laptops as they are harder for thieves to distinguish if you have an expensive laptop or just books. Whereas the shoulder bags were always easy targets.
    - Just me being cautious, which is why I am thrilled the Asus backpack is all black and unassuming.

Holy cow - I'm impressed that's worked so well for you so far :)

I've had so many reasons over the years to not trust anything but a fresh install when moving drives to a different machine. I think there's a lot more going on than just the obvious drivers - all kinds of other drivers, registry settings, etc...

    Keyboard issues:

I'm starting to experience some keyboard issues as well. Specifically when typing at fast speeds. The keyboard does not seem to register some letters or spaces when typing very fast, and I have no experienced this with other keyboards.

Not a huge deal for me, but somewhat of an annoyance.

Firefox used to crash on me when:
    a) tried to open a PDF online;
    b) my internet was slow;
This was when I found out that I had an old version, and was not updating because it was a regional one.

Go to their website and try to download version 3.6.

This reduced the crashing imensely, if it doesn't work, just get Opera on the meantime and try it again in a couple of weeks.

    This is bad.

Several weeks ago I spent an entire day (from 10am to 11.59pm, only stoping 30minutes to eat) finishing of a programming assignement it was due at midnight that day, only thing that saved me was this keyboard I'm now using that never mistyped/missed a beat.

Hope this is just a getting used problem, and not a keyboard one.

Yeah but he's gotta go and file a report with UPS and then wait for his money to come in. Who knows how long that's gonna take. Then he has to reorder again and who knows how long that's gonna take too. I would be mad as hell if I was him.

Actually, since he never got it, he gets his money back from the reseller.

And the reseller has to wait for UPS to give them their money back.

Having said that, he still might have to wait a week or so depending on the reseller. Say it was a Dell package that got lost, you'll get your money as soon as a rep confims that with UPS. Newegg, I am not so sure (and I don't know where he got his from).

I haven't had any typing issues if that makes you feel any better. I am coming form another laptop that had the chiclet style keys though.

I'm hoping that this is just a temporary problem due to my lack of experience with a chiclet keyboard. I think I just need to start hitting the keys harder or something.

Add me to the crew members list because... I JUST PRE ORDERED!

Hope I don't get shafted with new laptops coming out in the next 4 weeks with dual 5870's or something (with my luck that usually does happen).

Should be here around 15th March (In Australia no one has one apparently, still on backorders...)
