I booted from a USB drive containing Windows 7 Ultimate. I don't believe there is a copy of the actual Windows 7 media in the package.
On the boot menu (fourth option I believe across the top), you can go down and pick the boot device. A bootable CD has to be in the drive for that to show up IIRC.
I completely cleaned both drives using diskpart/clean all and installed completely clean and everything works using the driver disk that was included with the system.

Ok, so I got my refund notice from PNB today for my NP8760. Now I just need to make a decision on the G73JH or not.
What is the general consensus? Is there a good chance to get a machine with issues at this point?
I noticed Evensen ran into a problem, along with several other users. Should I be worried? -
Why did you return the Sager?
It depends on who you ask, some love it and will defend Asus to their death, others hate it. So far issues have been....
1. rams not being read right[4G instead of 8G]
2. monitor not turning on
3. keyboard not working correctly
4. hardlocks, bsod
5. grey screen, fuzzy lines, that's an ATI issue, Asus has not released a hotfix yet, you may try a mod driver instead.
6. steam not working correctly, this can be remdy by removing creative's software
7. wireless issue where they can't connect
8. no stock at the moment so if you need a rma, better hope the reseller has stock, Asus will make you wait as they have none to give out
These are issues I know of at this point. -
It is funny you ask. I returned it for the G73, because of the bang for the buck. I can get more power for $400+ less. The Sager was an amazing machine, but there were little things that bothered me, the lid was sometimes getting caught on the back of the case when opened, and the gloss plastic was getting more and more a PITA to clean smudges off of. These were minor things though, the major reason was the money I could save.
Don't get me wrong, the Sager was sweet, and the cooling was phenomenal. But, I returned it because I thought I would instantly order the G73. But now, I am having second thoughts on what to get. I will most likely still order the G73 and hope to not have any MAJOR issues. -
Guy I think ive gone off the deep end... how do I get AMD GPU Clock tool to work... I have it installed but it keeps telling me FAILED: No valid devices found....
-
-
I just ordered.
-
ty sleey0 for the link. much appreciated.
-
You shouldn't be worried, you should just be highly critical and aware. If there is any sign of freezing right off the bat, don't ignore it and pass it off like I did. I think the rate of failure is still within the average margin, so I wouldn't freak out just yet.
-
I don't think forums are good guage to figure out what the likely hood of something bad would occur. Laptop/Notebook forums just aren't that popular, most of the posts are by the same few people.
Really the only time someone looks at a forum like this is when they are researching for new product or when they have a problem.
So I would not be too worried as there are still many of us with no problems and just imagine how many other users there are that don't even know about NBR? It's backordered worldwide it seems.
-
^^^^ This.
I just commented to my wife today that the forums and communities like this are a breeding ground for paranoia - that people are going to be more likely to post if they have a problem, or are an enthusiast that is going to find any major/minor flaw in any system. -
The amount of errors reported is the only reason I have not ordered one today, at least yet, but you are probably right, the odds of getting a good unit are more likely better than having an issue.
On the other side of your last argument, though, I would imagine that there could be some users out there that bought this laptop and haven't even paid attention to whether they have 4 or 8 gigs of RAM. And we don't know how many of these units will stop working in the future.
As far as the resellers mentioned in this forum, I was wondering if someone could please inform me about which ones (if any) cover the shipping both ways if you have an issue.
Thanks in advance, guys. I've been lurking on this site for a while and finally registered because of all the good G73 discussion. -
I wouldn't hesitate to order from xotic, but be wary of newegg
-
12 Month Warranty
and 4x2GB.
-
Thanks Tanooki. I dropped by my local MC. Can you believe employee price is $1377 for that machine!? I can't believe how much they're making off that laptop. The MA store is getting 6 on Thursday.
-
it's actually 12 month accidental warranty and 24 months warranty
-
I am selling mine when i get my brand new RMA back if anyone is interested
-
Well, my RMA is finally approved and I'll be getting my money back. My timing sucks so bad. But the silver lining is they'll price match the notebook for me if and when it comes back. That is if I decide to purchase it again from them.
-
lol Sorry! Already grabbed sleey0's! Unless I can get you two into a bidding war...
-
HI IAM NEW HERE I NEED YOUR HELP!!! PLEASE PLEASE Almost ready to order my new G73JH, I GOT THE MONEY NOW FINALLY a few final questions on config.
Firstly, let me thank Vicious, Ziddy and 0100 for your posts. You guys convinced me that this is the machine to get.Iam A gamer! Based on your recommendations, am ordering from Gentech. GENTECH IS OK RIGHT is fast i ll do my pre order tomorrow febreary 23th When aprox i can get the g73jh in my hands! please help! -
you will get them when they get more machine which could be anytime. Also after they server their hundreds of pre orders
-
Ok, first, let's get those prescriptions refilled and then you can buy your laptop. Health is more important.
2nd, you'll have to speak with Gentech to get your ETA. As knowledgeable as these people are on the forums, they can't give you ETA's other than what the resellers tell us on these forums. Good luck. -
Quick question about the new catalyst 10.3 beta available for the 5870. I have lost the photoshop hardware acceleration with them. Does anyone know a fix for that?
thanks -
I have noticed that Gentech and Xotic's returns pages sound pretty harsh as far as restocking fees and nonrefundable Windows OS. I would appreciate it if anyone had any real reports about costs involved in either RMA exchanges or refunds.
-
Best thing to do is to email Ken at GenTech. That guy is dedicated, I would not be surprised if he will reply to during off-business hours. That's your best bet.
And even if you can get it faster say from NewEgg, sounds to me you are better off waiting with GenTech. Ken seems to be a more reliable, knowledgeable and caring person to do business with than say a NewEgg representative who may hate his/her job.
-
OZZY, I ordered on Feb. 5, I was told I will get the machine around March 15 from the aforementioned retailer. I almost bailed on my order but thanks to this forum I changed my mind and am in for the long haul. I am sure it will be worth the wait! Ken has been VERY responsive to numerous emails I have sent him.
-
You should feel lucky, I pre-ordered Jan 4th and still waiting
-
Ever since I installed a SSD in my G73 whenever I boot up when its been off for a while I while get a message saying "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key". If i simply reboot it boots up no problem, but I'm just wandering why this happens and can I fix it.

UPDATE: G73JH A2 RMA
Good News... Well better news.
I received a phone call today from a supervisor / tech that will now be handleing my case till it is closed out by ASUS. He was very encourageing about my concerns and in wanting to keep me as an ASUS customer. To prove this, he offered his direct phone numeber and e-mail address. I finally have personal contact and no longer will be dealing with the "script" reading customer service reps. Here is some of the converation we had.
1. My RMA unit is now fixed (new keyboard) and is going through testing and benchmarking to issure it is ready to be shipped out. However, he still wants me to have a new unit. It is my decision to take the unit or wait on a new one. He will be contacing me once the RMA unit fully checks out. I've waited this long, so, I am leaning toword the new one.
2. He comfirmed that a shipment of G73 will be arriving the 1st week of March, but could not confirm if it will be all A1 or a mix of A1 and A2. We will cross that bridge before the 1st of March, believe me... I am NOT waiting till the 11th for a new A2 unit.
3. I told him of the concerns and issues that are coming up on this thread (keyboard lag, GPU, ram, and screens) and he was very intrested and wants me to send a list of the known issues to him. I encouraged him to be an active or passive particpent in the forum to help ASUS find out issues and problems from the customers end. If I decide to opt for the new unit, he is going to unbox it, test it, and benchmark it for me before it is shipped out.
4. ASUS is aware of the driver issues and will be releasing a new driver with a new architect. However, he could not confirm if this new driver will be implemented in the next shipment... although it is coming. He was also unaware of the modded 10.3 driver, but said he would look into it.
I am now satisified with ASUS and that they are going to do all that they can to isure me a fully working and capable G73.
Good luck to everyone else with issues. I am being very proactive for us all. I will keep posting to keep everone in the loop.
Best Wishes -
That's really good to hear and thanks for the update. It's very good of him to offer to test out the new unit if you decide to go for it. I would say go with the new unit rather than keeping the fixed one. Who knows how well the techs handled your computer and whether they knew exactly 100% what they were doing (sorry, I know not all techs are like that but I have experienced quite a few n00bs).
-
Don't you dare!!!
I got $100 of your dollars already
lol -
Yeah...but if I could get you guys to lower the price by more than that, it's still a gain for me!
But don't worry. I have no intention of doing that. lol You've been more than helpful already.
BTW, no word back yet from Xotic on my cancelled order...not worried or anything. I'll call if I don't hear anything by mid-afternoon -
My first post, and my first day with my new G73JH-X1!
Can anyone tell me if any laptop sleeves/cases will work with the Targus XL backpack or (preferably) some sort of messenger bag? I bought a Timbuk2 Command messenger bag but its just a tad too small; the cover hardly closes halfway down the side of the thing.
Now time for less lurking on here and more Starcraft 2! Thanks for all the awesome advice/input btw... this forum has been an immense help since I discovered it a while back -
Get a hold of JustinW on the phone. He can cancel it right away and maybe push your refund through quicker.
I had to get on them as emails weren't being answered when I tried to cancel mine. -
Yeah. I sent the other Justin a PM on these forums, along with a message to sales on their site. If I don't hear from either by the afternoon, I'll be picking up the phone.

Hey guys,
1. I was wondering if someone could give me advice on whether XoticPC and/or GenTech were reliable laptop resellers especially for the G73JH. I would like mine to come in triple packing, protected a streak free like the most important thing ever. (Just saying)
2.Also, I asked this question earlier, but I did not get a definitive answer. What are some of the known issues facing the G73JH right now? I could'nt go through all 189 pages.(Before I take the plunge)
3. Is there a difference between the stock wireless card and the offered upgrade? I saw an Intel 6200 Wireless card available.
4. Finally, A1 vs A2 any opinions.. Blu ray worth it? I thought I saw some issues some pages earlier... Not sure.
Thanks for the help guys! -
Both are good, Ken @ GenTech is 2nd to none though.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=461117 -- not that it's the best thing to go by
You can get the wireless upgrade, but you'll barely notice any performance difference, if any at all. I'd stick with stock, but that's me.
no known issues, but no one (to my knowledge) has an A1 yet. I saw someone who had an Aus version with a BD but didn't hear any problems with it. -
Gah. Was really hoping that Asus was going to provide a way to purchase that HD caddy from them a little sooner than this.
Can't possibly keep up with the forums while on business- can't believe how much you guys post. Anyone find a solution for the HD issue with the X1 yet (outside of double-sided tape, as I'm not doing SSD)? -
I would do 15xx $ shipped
A2 model
Come on Sleey0
beat that -
Does anybody know or are there any clues when the next shipment will arrive at the various vendors?

^^^^Yeah, that damn Jerrod certainly knows how to bring in the freaks!
-
Thanks Phoenix! Helped! ( How do I add rep point?)
1.You said there's no difference between the two wireless cards in terms of performance? Really, so it is just an issue of brand or something?
2.Also, the G73JH is missing eSATA,firewire and an Express Card slot, is that a big loss..? What kinds of devices use these. I don't remember using these ports much. But then again, one would'nt know...
3.How about battery life and temps?
Thanks! -
Hi guys I've been posting in the other thread. In this one just at the beginning. Anyways, today received an e-mail from XoticPC, my G73JH-A2(I pre ordered A1 but yesterday they asked me if I wanted to change to A2 + Bluray player and I said yes) is in phase 2: BUILDING! In case anyone wants to know I preordered on January 11th 2010. Looking forward to touch it!!!
-
Did anyone get from XoticPC the A2 + BD? is it looking fine? I mean, the blu ray player seems like built-in or you see that it isn't? Thank you in advice.
-
If you have to ask it is not important for you to have them
-

How important is my liver?
Dr Moo: Oh ho ho, if you need to ask you dont really need it
eSATA is not needed but convenient, it allows you to use an esata connection for an external hard drive, and its a lot faster than USB if you have a fast drive. So its not needed in any way since you can always use USB, but if you used a fast external drive often that has esata it makes it better to use.
firewire is another connection type, comes in 2 flavors. Firewire 400 and Firewire 800. 400 is almost the same speed as USB 2.0 so its totally obsolete really. Firewire 800 is about 2x faster than USB 2.0 so use it if you can but not many devices use it these days. Some camecorders are the only thing that come to mind. Unless you had a device that was firewire only this is again not needed but can be convienent.
expresscard slot, a nice interface for some accessories like external sound cards or GSM internet cards. If you had one of those devices you would hate to not have use of them anymore, but since you probably do not, its not a big deal. Most anything you put in the expresscard slot has a USB version. -
not a problem.
In a technical sense, there are differences, but unless you're transferring large files, over your lan, you're not going to notice any difference. Even then it's not likely that you would, and you should be using gigabit ethernet at that point. -
Alright then. If there are no signal reception strength differences/speed differences and reliability between the two cards. I guess its fine. I use a large college campus wifi and my current laptop is killing me in detecting and securing a good signal in my room. But i do not think i'll be transferring files within the network much. But that's why i just want to make sure.
Anyone have any temps and battery life stats.. or links to them? Thanks.
P.S. You folks are awesome
