Heh.
The Intel specs make my eyes glaze over. I see certain theoretical maximums for certain RAM configurations but no absolute maximum.
There's also other notebooks advertising 16GB RAM.
Until I get my A1 I won't believe the i7 720QM even exists, so I'm not sure why I'm even thinking about this... -

Interesting, never seen a driver do that before.
Buy an Alienware.
Intel states support up to 8GB. It also states 1066/1333 only AND CAS 7 only supported for 1066 and not 1333. I'm running CAS 7 1333 with no issues. Sleey0 will test out the 1600 memory and now we have our first report of someone getting 16GB to work. Would like to see that tested and see if there are any issues with it.
The only report necessary is from Intel.
Like previously stated, Intel says up to 8GB. I went through the white papers and didn't find any exceptions. They do have in parenthesis (dependent on memory type) but I couldn't find any additional info on it. -
My question about the ram would be how he tested it, did he just stick in 16 gigs and see if it booted up or did he go more in depth? It could be that it will run fine with more than 8 but only 8 are actually used by the system so the rest are just loitering watching the others do the work.
-
All I saw was a screen shot of Windows properties. I asked him to test with OCCT, we'll see.

Oh the backlight thing is just a small niggle. And yes I would like some cheese with my whine.

is this download and install method for clean install of windows 7 safe? I also have a key but no media so this would save me the hassle of having the media sent to me.

Alright I've got a question. I've been reading through this for the past month or two. I have a few questions, That I realized have come up.
1. If I order from www.xoticpc.com <- Is that a reliable site? I have seen alot of you say yes, just some other general info would help
2. I am not sure if I'm following on some of the lock ups, are there drivers that do not work on the laptop / new ddrivers that are crashing?
3. Is the turbo mode button / oc working? I've seen people saying they crash with it -
I have yet to purchase from them, but it seems that everybody else here is and when I order my A1, I think it will be from them. Justin@XoticPC is on THESE forums and actually answers to our questions. I emailed him a couple times and he was as helpful as anyone could be. I for one am DEFINETLY prepared to buy from him. I think they also have like a 99% reseller rating or something. Dell and hp by comparison have about 50-60%
-
Yeah I've been emailing him as well. Okay thanks. -
Hello.
Im willing to buy a detailed high quality video guide to the disassembly & reassembly of the ASUS G73JH laptop that shows how to upgrade the processor, graphic card and the wireless adapter.
Anyone that can help please post the video for sale on eBay along with some preview screenshots in the listing and state the listing # in the reply. -
The wireless card is easy from what I've read. Replacing the cpu is risky as there's a sticker on it and if it breaks, you lose your warranty. The graphic's card, I don't think you can replace.
Yeah I know some people say the warranty isn't that important and so on, and it's not stopping them from taking apart their laptop. then again maybe they know how to get the sticker off without Asus knowing they took it off. To me I don't have $1600 to buy another laptop so I personally would not mess with it, besides the changing the HD. -
If you need a video, just get the upgrade done from XoticPC or GentechPC. Seriously, that way you won't destroy your computer, lose screws and still retain your warranty.
-
Depends on your price
I can do it but. ... -
Memtest is fine after 4 hours. I'm gonna try the ATI 103 and see if that helps. I know it's not power4gear. I uninstalled that and it still BSOD. Weird thing again is, it's just sitting there idle, doing nothing when it BSOD.
-
I can verify that the wifi upgrade is easy... I just did it for both of our G73's. Two screws on the bottom panel, pop off the two wires, and then two screws on the card itself. Reverse the steps to put in the new one.
The only thing that surprised me is that the card kind of pivots on one end, and seems to be spring-loaded in some way, so hold on to the second screw when you get it loose, since the card is like a little catapult.
My connection was usually sitting at 65-100Mbps, and now it's usually in the 216-300Mbps range. My VPN connection seems a little flakey still, but it connects in 2-3 tries now, instead of in 20 or so. Definitely worth $30, imho. -
Just wondering, what do people do with the old wireless card?
-
I just noticed that after I reformatted the computer to the entire HD, when I look at my partitions, it still looks like there are two partitions. Is it safe to delete the primary partition? It says this partition is 100% free so I don't think there's any data on it. It also has no file system and is about 19 gb.
Also, I heard there's a hidden partition that has the recovery data on it. But I don't see this partition? Is it automatically deleted when I recovered to the entire HD or maybe it's what the primary partition is? -
I think my pair of old wifi cards would make a fine pair of earrings for my wife.
Really, though, I'll probably just keep them, in case I want to swap them back in if I sell or something. Not really worth enough to try to sell, I wouldn't think. -
Does anyone know if xotic send computers on saturdays?

That 19GB is (was) your hidden partition with the recovery image. I can't comment on its removal as I haven't tried and won't until the warranty is up, just my preference.
Since it says 100% free, you could try and delete it and recover space through windows disk management.
Q -
I backed it up to an external drive using Ghost and then wiped the whole hard drive. I can't imagine why I would ever put it back, but I thought I would make a backup of it just in case. If I have to send it in for warranty work, I'll do a DOD wipe and box it up.
-
I have a hunch your Recovery Partition (the 19GB primary) is still good, although hidden; easy enough to check, just hit the F9 key on reboot. There is a warning before it proceeds to rewrite your drive so you can opt out or just hit the power switch.
It's an amazingly useful thing to have when it comes time to sell the machine; one button press and everything is back exactly the way it came from the factory for the new owner, and all evidence of your use is gone (although I'd still zero any truly confidential files). -
Wow, I tried the F9 thing, and it seems like the Recovery Partition is still good because it was going to start the process of reformatting my computer. But this doesn't make sense because when I look at my partitions, that partition says 19.53 gb capacity and 19.53 gb's free. Maybe this partition isn't the actual recovery partition, because I added up all my partition space, and it seems like about 30 gb are missing after I add my C drive to this 19 gb drive.
By the way, anyone know the difference between recovering through the partition vs. the disc? Are you forced to reinstall all the bloatware if you just use the partition? -
Partition recovery just takes the image that was on your computer when you first got it and puts it back. It's not actually "installing" anything.
But what do i know i could be wrong. -
I tried that, and I couldn't get that partition back.
-
You tried deleting it but it wouldn't let you? Or do you mean you deleted it successfully and now you can't recover your computer through the recovery partition?
I'm thinking that if it doesn't let you delete it, maybe it isn't actually free space but is protected somehow. -

500GB on the label doesn't mean 500GB in windows. While HDD manufacturers say 500GB, they suggest 1GB is 1,000MB and that's not how a computer sees it. It's 1,024MB per 1GB. When you're playing in GB, divide the number by 1.072 (e.g. 500 / 1.073) and you'll see your true HDD size. This would account for your missing 30GB and all HDD's have a little give and take to that.
You're right, returns to factory condition.
I'm not surprised and no worries for me, but I wonder when the people will come out and say Asus stole 19.5GB's of my drive
Q -
if anyone is interested, there is a video of Aliens vs Predator performance on G73

If the recovery partition just returns the computer to the factory image, isn't that the same as using restore point? Does that mean you would have to defrag your computer afterward because it didn't reformat the drive?
-
Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
Nooooo. 'System Restore' is a windows feature and has nothing to do with what we call a "disk image". The Recovery Partition is a disk image, it has your W7, drivers and bloatware exactly the way Asus sent it to you. When you run this recovery, it will wipe your HDD, (reset the drive to the 2 partitions, I think) it had for use and put the software back on just like it was when you got it. Nothing else needed for you to do.
Q -
I deleted it on my first G73 before I rma it back to newegg. I could not add that partition to my C partition.
Anyways just for fun I decided to take my G73 outside and check the temps on it. It's currently 30F and that was not enough to bring my cpu temps down below 40C.
Two of the four cores got below 30C but the other two were above 40C. I was outside for 5 minutes with the G73 and it was cold, lol. I might try again later on in the week with vantage running and see if it helps with the temps.

For some reason, I found it incredibly difficult to read your post
Something about outdoors and cold
, just wasn't clicking
Nice desktop.
Q -
Meh was typing on the laptop, wasn't that easy...
-
Awesome desktop that rocks.
-
so people who did put intel 6200 in. Compared to those Atheros card, as i understand they let the connection up to 300mbp. My question is regarding range. Any difference in range?? As 150mbps is more than enough for me over wlan
-
I will post results next week. I ordered one exactly for this reason. If it doesn't give me more range I still will have a benefit with the increased network speed.
-
Idk if you all have already seen this but the G73 page on Asus' site has now gone live.

So am I the only one who lost HDMI video output with 10.3 Catalyst?
-
May there ALWAYS be an England!
As for the Recovery Partition, it is deliberately "hard to see, hard to kill." It's FAT-32 and Hidden. A low-level format will delete it, as will first erasing it and then deleting it and recovering the space in Disk Management, but I really recommend you leave it as is, if you ever catch a virus or a worm you'll be incredibly happy it's there. That's just my personal opinion, however. -
Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!
ziddy, I don't remember if I tried the HDMI with the 9.12 or 10.3's. When I did the sound worked well and did pass the 5.1DTS that the LOST blu-rays put out, however I did notice blackout bars on all 4 sides (not just the movie, but the desktop also) and was going to address that later as it could be a Denon 3808 passthrough issue.
When I get home in the morning, I will hook it up directly to the TV real quick with the 10.3's and let you know what I find.
Q -
My hdmi video definitely works on 10.3... It's just going to a computer monitor, though, so I don't know about audio.
-
Hmm maybe my settings are wrong. I just watched a DVD earlier last week on the 9.12 drivers. On this one the audio output is working, but the video I just get a blank grayish black screen and nothing appears when I drag video, browser over.
-
Can you guys actually play games in a 40 inch 1080p tv with the same quality as you would play in the 17 inch? Thanks a lot..
-
There both the same resolution so what ever framerates your getting on your laptop screen you will be getting on your HDTV
...

+1 to the Owner's Lounge! >_< Looking forward to gaming with some quality folks on this thread. But before that, I shall plug in and watch some Blu-Rays tonight. YAY!
-
This is awesome!
-
I went to Best Buy today looking for a backpack for the X1. They had nothing that would fit. They didn't carry the Targus XL. Headed over to Fry's Electronics and it turns out that the Targus City Gear backpack fits perfectly. I mean it fits like they used the measurements from this laptop to sew up the bag!
It's not huge like people have described the Targus XL. It's big enough, but not huge. Thought I would pass that along for X1 and X2 owners. -
To the folks with a BD-player in their g73 - where in the hell is the blu-ray playback software??? =( Totally looked forward to watching movies tonight, rented three blu-ray discs and cannot play anything. FFFFFFFF...
Edit: Found it. Not a good start to my experience with this laptop. I sure hope when I start gaming on it, it'll turn around for the better. For now, it irks me that out of all the pointless bloatware that was on here, the Blu-Ray playback software wasn't even installed...
