is anyone else having this problem:

My login screen resolution only on a initial start up is lower then my native (1920 x 1080) in windows 7. Can anyone confirm they have this minor problem? I know I can live with it just sorta annoying... really awesome that this is my only complaint.

The weird thing is that after I log in and put the laptop to sleep it - the login screen is at native resolution.

Hey guys, I rec'd my A1 a while ago, but last night was the first time that I attempted to play a blu-ray movie in it. Apparently, windows media player can't play blu-rays, and i couldn't find another program on the computer that would. Has anyone else run into this? Is there something on the driver disk that will do it, or do I have to go find some third party program? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I believe there's a third party software on the disc which is not installed on the machine.
Thats what someone had posted iirc

I believe this is due to Windows 7. I have the same thing happening with my G51J.

Where did you order from? I think you may be the first A1 owner.

Corel WinDVD9 Plus Blu-ray has supposedly been working

I have had my A1 since the 15th of Feb. I ordered from Tim and Donald at PowerNotebooks. The service was great, and like you said, I may be the first A1 owner (Chances are slim, I think). What is it they say about the best things coming to those who wait?

I Have a disk for Power2Go or something like that, but I was under the impression that that was just burning software?

Btw, this laptop is exceeding my expectations.

    Lhiannon,

When you say that you received your A1 a while ago, I assume that what you REALLY meant to say was that you received your A2 with a Blu-Ray upgrade installed a while ago.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I find that it's getting more and more confusing as Asus keeps releasing multiple models of the G73jH (A1, A2, X-1, X-2, etc.), yet many of us on the forum talk about a their G73s without mentioning the model number (or worse yet, calling it by the wrong model number).

It would be really useful if everyone mentioned what model number they were referencing in their post (or better yet, put it in your signature).

    Thanks,

    NightBandit

Is the ONLY difference between the 2 packages the blu-ray player? I thought that the A2's were sans backpack and mouse?

    A1?? the $1695 one?!??

they are really nice huh? OH! I ordered jan 5... from the main site. I paid in full too! i called the number Late Jan, Feb, Feb, Feb... any more Feb ETA? and now March! so.... what else do i have to do?
they were nice?!? yeah their tones are very nice. but what they were saying is that "I prefer the ebay account. I have two seperate list of ppl... or maybe I dun have a list at all. as long as all the computers all gets shipped out. I'm rich! I probably invested all the other's payments 3 months ago and made a profit. according to their policy... they could just tell the others.... we were out of order. sorry we'll refund ur money if they choose to."

If it really was the A1.... me over!

I guess the earlier u preorder the longer u get ed over! pardon my language.

Oh yeah S13, I think I got a lawsuit on my hands. lol I really wish i went into law. I think there's a law that states " u can sue!" But i would need ur testimony and when u preorder and what u did as evidence. I already went through hassle... it'll just be like jury duty. let me contemplate this as a college student. would u allow me to use ur receipts and order copies as testimony? i'll give u 15%! lol If only I have time! any lawyer around here!!!! I'll give him 35% of whatever he gets out of it.

    @Lhiannon:

Does it actually say "Blu Ray" on the DVD/CD-ROM bezel of your G73? There have been a lot of resellers taking A2's and dropping a Blu Ray player in them...

Bluray movie playback requires third party software. Period. The drive works, and reads bluray discs just fine. You just need to buy software to watch the movies.

There are several options, including the newer versions of PowerDVD.

This is similar to when dvd drives first started replacing cd drives in computers. You need software to play it.

No, it doesn't. As i recall now, I WAS offered the upgrade for free in order to get my order faster (Thanks Donald). I apologize for the confusion. However, I guess I was under the impression (My own assumption, based on what I'd read here) that the A1's were the only ones that came with the backpack and mouse.

It wasn't my contention at all that the drive didn't work, I just wondered if the software I needed had been provided by the manufacturer, and if so, where was it located, or if I was going to need to go find some.

As an aside, does anyone think its kinda silly that it wouldn't be provided?

One more thing, I noticed that the RAM on mine read 1333, so I guess i got that free "upgrade" as well. Are many others seeing that as well?

    Lhiannon,

Both the A1 and the A2 come with the backpack and mouse (the X-1 and X-2 do not).

And from what I've heard, all the G73jHs (all modles) have been coming with the 1333 RAM due to an supposed shortage of 1066 RAM. However, there was one person claiming that they got 1066 (I forgot who it was).

    Hope you're enjoying your G73jH,

    NightBandit

Lhiannon probably has an A2 with a blu ray drive upgrade. The bezel will say DVD and not blu ray because they have to swap the bezels for it to sit flush.

If he did get an oem blu ray drive upgrade, it doesn't come with any playback software. The A1's most likely will come with a basic version of PowerDvd or Windvd that supports blu ray playback.

There is a codec pack located here:

    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/k-lite_codec_pack_full.cfm

This may include the codecs needed to play blu rays through Windows Media Player. Otherwise, you are screwed and need to pony up 50 bucks or find a less... palatable way to obtain playback software.

You should only worry if you decided to upgrade to the 820/920 processors. If not, you shouldn't worry.

Sorry couldn't figure out how to start a new thread, guessing I don't have the privilege yet. Was wondering if others could run this so I could compare. And so to not clutter up this thread, you can just PM me with your results and I will post the results in the thread in one post.

    http://go.notebookreview.com/?id=525X832&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.intel.com%2Fsupport%2Fprocessors%2Ftools%2Fpiu%2Fsb%2FCS-014921.htm

I ran this on my g73jh just for fun. Even though I have a 720QM, it seems as though I am getting 820QM speeds. w/o twin turbo on, the stock speed is at 1.73GHz With it on it is at 1.82GHz. Does anyone else think that this looks more like 820QM speeds or do you think I just came in on just the right side of the standard deviation allowance for this processor? It would make me happy if I got a 820 with the casing and signature of a 720 (Though I highly doubt this is even possible from Intel, I can still dream).

Can anyone else run this on their 720 and get someone to run it on their 820 to see what it should be. Only takes bout a minute or two for install and diagnostic and the link is straight to intel.com, you can check the security certificate. Here are my results. Please participate, will rep all who do. Thanks.

    720 speed comparison.jpg

PS Please send me a copy of your results with turbo disabled and enabled side by side in one photo if possible, if not, just tell me in the PM.
    Thanks guys.

If you got a true A1, your BR drive door will have the Blu-Ray label on it. If yours is an A2, you wil have the Blu-Ray player, but the face will be from the A2, so no BR symbol on it.

Dont know if this is the right thread or if I should just start my own, but I figured I would ask you nice guys anyway.
I have been playing CS Source on this thing for hours. I have had the 10.3 modder on it ever since I got it as well. All of a sudden though the game has been stuttering like CRAZY. Its not my connection or anything as I literally turn to my left where my desktop is and the game on that is flawless, so just my laptop. Any advice?
Forgot to mention this is the only game that stutters and beginning to think only valve games do this.

Let me put an end to this for you and post it in case anyone else thinks it. I get just about the same thing as you with TT on and off, but there is no reason to think you have a magic 720 giving you an 820. With TT off and cpu stressed, your i7 turbo multipliers will stay at x13 and with a BCLK of 133 (TT off) you get 13*133=1729 a.k.a. 1.73GHz. With TT on and a full load , you will lose that x13 and it will be a x12 at the highest, but your BCLK is 142 instead of 133 (that's what your TT does, raises your BCLK), so 12*142=1704 a.k.a. 1.7GHz. In the real world (I've done several tests), the Intel readout of 1.82GHz is erroneous as the utility isn't keeping a full load and acts as if you still have a x13 multiplier (13*142=1.84 a.k.a. 1.84GHz) with TT on and trust me, you don't. When you don't have a full load, your i7 turbo chooses between higher core freqs, but with less cores.

Everything is fine with your G73, but sorry to say, you don't have a golden 720, it's just like the rest of ours.

Note the Overclocked Advisory button on your 1.82 image, read that, this intel utility isn't expecing Asus to do that to the BCLK.

Although an individual processor model can vary in how it is built slightly, they all perform exactlythe same. This is because the processor is set to run at exactly 1.6ghz.

Standard deviation will however have an effect on overclocking ability. Take for instance the desktop i7 2.66ghz model. Under the same conditions some people can get it to 4ghz, while others can only get around 3.5ghz stable. However this is only due to the manual changing(overclocking) of how fast the cpu runs.

In some cases, Intel/amd will just make a batch of processors. The ones that run the best get selected to be the high end models; the rest are designated as middle or lower models. In the case of AMD, if one of their quad cores has a faulty core, they relabel it as a triple core.

If anyone can comment on my accuracy that would be nice, but I think it should all hold true in general.

I couldn't wait for an A1 or an A2, so I went to Micro Center and got myself an X2 without the extra 500gb hdd or the backpack or the mouse. I also didn't get the 1333 RAM :(. Update: I did get the 1333 RAM, but didn't get the 2 year warranty.

Ok, back again. Tried searching this thread, but couldn't find the answer to my question. The 5870 supports eyefinity, correct? So, I just need some kind of adapter to plug in more than one monitor?

It does, but the G73 does not have the proper display connection to support eyefinity. No laptop yet supports it. Your only option for mulit-mon is using the vga and hdmi port.

The mobile 5870 does support it, but the laptop manufacturer has to build in the appropriate architecture to use it. None do yet.

I'm just curious as to whether or not, whenever XoticPC does the phase 2 burn in process (I switched to the A2 model and added a BD) as result of customization, will the stress testing confirm there is a problem with that particular computer and will that then allow for a replacement of a fully functioning (or expected to) computer that will avoid having the problems that many are facing with it?

I was unsure if the extended Phase 2 process (instead of 3-7 days it was 5-10) with this computer would have been as result of expected receiving date for there end, or whether it was more to do with the large extent of problems that have shown up and are known to exist (quality control issue for Asus or simply unexpected technical glitches?)

As to why I haven't contacted XoticPC in regards to the order, I figured it would be just another routine question that they get all the time with this model, and of which finding an answer would be more time than it's worth to hassle them with (in other words I would rather expect they have all the time they need to determine the unit works properly.)

It's should have been 7 business days since the order has gone out for their customization process.

As far as I know, unless you request it be fully checked/burned in Xotic is only powering on the machine to make sure all 8gb of ram show up. The 4gb ram issue is the most common prob right now which results in either a bad board or bad ram (usually board). If you upgrade the cpu, they will of course do the burn in because they have to really get into the machine anyway. If you are just upgrading to a blu ray, they will probably not be doing anything beyond the ram check unless you request it.

Not loud at all. Ridiculously quiet, in fact.

Are you overclocking (I am guessing no).

This is a similar problem to what I had, except I would get them in random things like flash videos, firefox, and sometimes a game.

It ended up having to be RMa'd because it was a faulty gpu. You are most likely in the same boat. Sorry about your luck.
