weird lines? like these?. These are due to a bad video card.

bsod = blue screen of death. It gives error codes for why windows has crashed.

If it's a grey screen with lines then it's the GPU and you're up a creek with it. You're going to have to RMA it. Kinda bites to have it and then have to send it right back. Just remember, wherever you send it back to, the squeeky wheel gets the grease.

I can't remember what it's called but I was wondering if the onboard soundcard supports the simulated "surround sound" option with a headset plugged in. I play a lot of online FPSs and it's a fairly important feature for those types of games. Not sure if it makes a difference but I have a Creative "Fatal1ty" hs-1000 usb headset.

Keyboard illumination flashes when booting, but goes out as soon as
Windows starts to load and remains out when Windows is running.????
What have I broken now.?? Help please.

Fn + F4 increases the keyboard illumination. Not sure if it turns it on or not.

I would think that would be a disastrous move for Asus. So doubt that as at least to me, they try to provide the best standard warranty/customer service possible as they are still trying to build a fan base in the US. Average person doesn't know Asus, so doing the above would disrupt their efforts to continue to grow in the US at least.

which one is the newest set of drivers available for the mobility 5870? and how can i get my hands into it?

i would like to try a bit more b4 RMAing it.

if my gpu is bad, it shouldn't run the games at all.... and at lower resolution i can play for much longer.. only when i had a 4 star criminal rating and had too much goin on.. it froze.. and made a noise too.. continously until i shut it off.. and then i restart it.. everythings back to normal.. until it freezes again.. once also it froze up while playing a dvd movie.

Anyone else pissed off at the volume sensitivity? On some (most) things that have sound, turning the volume up one notch from muted is too loud.

When my girlfriend goes to bed, I try to keep quiet. I want a gradual volume curve, not from mute to loud in one notch.

Bir420, the codes are on the blue screen when it happens. If you don't get the blue screen then the problem is something else.

m0, I don't like the volume control either. Use the volume control that is next to the clock on the task bar. That one allows you much better control of the volume that the function key volume control.

could stumbling in a furmark test mean possibly a hardware issue? I have tried different drivers with same results and I am currently on the 10.3 drivers. I have seen no other problems running CS source and L4d2 with regards to visual artifacts.

yes it does indicate a underlying GPU failure. Games dont stress the GPU like games its why you see it in furmark but now games

wow thats prolly the worst thing I could possibly hear. So you think I should RMA the unit?
Wow this sucks... I can wait it out till they get more instock and will have a quicker turnaround I guess. Sucks cuz Ill prolly lose my higher speed ram. I'm outside of my one week with microcenter so I have to deal directly with Asus now. I still have yet to register it until I knew there wasn't any problems... guess I have to now....

ohhh geeeezz, 3 weeks. I am just gonna get it registered (do you even have to register it for an rma? or just fill out the RMA thing on thier site.) I think I am getting the acidental 1 year registeration confused (i have yet to do this).

I've used it on a couple of gaming nights already where it was pushed at a gaming stand-point so Im sure it can wait a couple months till asus catches up with this whole G73 shortage... I think Ill wait til around exam time (lol) when computers like these can be a major distraction....

Since you have to send it back to ASUS I would call them and get the name of the tech you talk to first. Have them give you an RMA number. After you get it and follow the instructions NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER talk to ANYONE in customer service. The ONLY exception to this maybe on your first call to follow up after you know they've received it ONLY to find out the name of the tech assigned to your case. Customer service and tech support aren't even in the same facility and they talk through email. If you call customer support asking for someone in tech support they will not put you through. If you call ASUS main number in California and press 0 and ask the receptionist for your tech by name they will put you right through. Calling customer support is a complete waste of time. Be persistent but be polite. Oh yeah and keep your fingers crossed.

Wow... how things can change.... I hadn't quite given up on this unit yet. I was using v1.8 of furmark. So I tried out V1.65. Low and behold no problems whatsoever with stuttering or blocky movements.

WOW did it ever heat up fast tho (at native res)! I let it go 4.5 minutes and it hit 98 C. I would of stopped it at 95 but I left for 1 minute and returned to see it at 98C! Can any others report similar heating after so short of time?

Yo G73 owners. Good news, the G73 cooling system is very good for the $1550 price. Moo has a Clevo W870CU with the HD5870 and with aftermarket cooling paste he's getting 77C with 15 minutes of Futuremark benchmarking. This is about the same as I was getting with the HD5870 Core overclocked to 800.

I wonder how loud the Clevo's cooling system is compared to the G73 though right? Hehe, now I'm just poking fun.

    Thumbs up Asus right?

lol .. lets see your 950/1165 runs in vantage ;)

Also please actually tell the truth

Moo is recieveing 77 on the GDDR5 RAM after 15 minutes on Furmark. you are recieveing 91c in vantage on your Gddr5 RAM

    FULL TEMPS

    910/1125 clocks

there is no doubt i look at the machine with a negative view point after my experience but its only because mine did overheat and die :)

Wow I've been away from this thread for a while and now that I come back everything seems very negative. What is the overall opinion around here on the G73? I'm still waiting for mine from XoticPC. Should I get something else or is it still worth it?

Would you suggest switching to maybe an ASUS K72JR-A1 with an i7 and 6gb?

I've been enjoying the G73 and haven't been following this thread so I'm not sure what all negative stuff was said, but I haven't had one major problem with it yet.

Other than some tiny problems here and there, including SHIFT key lag, unusable touchpad buttons, touchy volume adjustment, and lack of USB3/eSATA. Other than that if you're in the market for a 17" notebook, there's no reason to pass this model up. The power is definitely there, and it's cheap.

I have a small GPU temperature concern. I do have the 10.3 Beta drivers installed and nothing is wrong with my laptop, it performs great. However, during my last several Bad Company 2 sessions, HW Monitor has put my max temperature value at 94*C. I have not been paying attention to when it is hitting that temp, but my avg on other games seems to be in the 70-75* area.

Mine's being RMA'd. Had it a week and a half.

    Pro's:

looks real nice, if not a bit cheesy with the stealth fighter theme
quite light for such a big machine
seemed to run cool (not sure if heat issues killed it tho)
cooling was pulled from the keyboard and not the underside of laptop - a HUGE plus IMHO
rubberized exterior nice while I had it
not a huge fan of backlit keyboard at first, but it grew on me
Sound was decent, but not as good as my XPS M1710
Nice LCD, save for so so viewing angles

    Con's:
RMA'd dead after a little over a week - wont boot past bios.
Keyboard very sluggish/missed keystrokes/soft spots on keyboard
Touchpad not very responsive even with much tweaking
Problems waking up from sleep mode several instances
LCD did not tilt back far enough
Plug for powerbrick on side, not back (makes an already WIDE machine that much wider)
    No USB3
Touchpad WAY too wide - had to turn it off and use a wireless mouse
Single bar touchpad button should have been split into two buttons
Powerbrick is HUGE (I thought my XPS M1710brick was big!)
Viewing angles on LCD not the greatest
Keyboard set too far back for comfort
    lots of bloatware
3 partitions from factory on hard drive (useless IMHO)
No windows 7 disk except for recovery disk
No media buttons for ease of adjusting volume at least (loved my XPS media buttons)

Bottom line - I really loved the power it seemed to have, while it lived. No super new games, but Modern Warfare on all high settings flew. Was going to be getting Fear 2, Modern Warfare 2 and Crysis this week, but with no gaming laptop will have to wait. I was just getting things set up on the laptop with all my files/games/pictures/personal settings as I like them, so having to already RMA it is a real bummer. In fact, I'd almost rather just get a refund and wait for either an improved version of the g73jh or wait for anther vendor with a similar i7/ati 5870 spec'd rig. I got this off of Newegg, so don't know if I even CAN return it at this point (it arrived two weeks ago tomorrow).

Actually, before I send this rig back, does anyone know if I can just return for refund in a situation like this where the laptop died after less than 2 weeks of ownership? I suppose buying through New Egg is this issue?

If it posts the BIOS to the screen, then the laptop isn't dead. That symptom is normally a dead hard drive.

    Buyer's remorse?

indeed but it could also be a faulty mobo that can't post.... If the mobo is messed up or something else then the actual test wont pass and it will hang up

Try removeing HD's and RAM then boot and see

I guess what is unclear from him is whether it posts video to the LCD or just sits there and does nothing.

If it posts video, the motherboard is not bad. Not on a machine that is 1.5 weeks old and worked flawlessly.

Yeah, the it goes into bios, but won't go past that. I've considered just getting another hard drive myself, and waiting for the replacement hard drive from Asus to arrive instead of RMAing it. No where around here stocks 7200 500 GB hard drives so I'd have to order that. It's probably a bad hard drive in my layman's opinion. I'm debating to RMA it or just have Asus send a new hard drive.

There is a "clicking" or chirping sound coming from the machine - I'm assuming it's the hard drive but almost sounds like it's coming from somwhere else possibly the DVD drive. I would have just bought a new hard drive and tried installing from the windows recovery disk but with only Staples and Walmart around no one has a HD that I want. I guess I could ask Asus to send me a new hard drive instead of RMAing. Looking for opinions. I would like to keep the rig - but don't want to wait 30 days for a replacement.

Dude I would have ASUS send you a new drive. They have MANY more of those available to ship out than a new G73. And returning it to Newegg would be throwing your money away in restocking fees.

With what you'd pay in restocking fees, you might as well eat the price of the hard drive and have one overnighted!

Btw, you can buy an external 2.5" hard drive at Wal-Mart and rip out the SATA drive inside of it.

Just stay away from the Western Digital Externals for this purpose... they contain a proprietary SATA drive inside that has the SATA-to-USB components on the main PCB.

why not just use the secondary HDD? take it out and put it in the primary bay and use the recovery drive to install fresh onto the 2nd HDD?
