When changing the display mode via the Fn + F8 button it mirrors the display when changed to LCD + HDMI. I'd like to have the desktop extended when choosing that option instead. Is this possible?

I think you do this in Windows' display settings page. Right click on the desktop and then click screen resolution. You should be able to find the desired settings in here! :)

I can do it there but it doesn't save so that when I use the quick key it goes to that.

I run it on med just so i ensure pretty good performance and with this game med looks good anyways.

I think I read somewhere that it could run bc2 beta all on high but with the retail version they upped the textures.

Hey guys I am having a problem, I got the A1 and made the restore disks since they no longer come with resotre disks. I put my ssd in and restored to the ssd with the recovery disks. When it is finished the machine will not boot and if i put the ssd into another computer it shows the partition as raw format. Is there something I am missing? I am gunna be pissed if i cannot use my ssd in this.

OK Quick Update - My A1:

Came with the Original Razer Pictured ROG Mouse and DDR3 1333
It did not come with the Recovery DVD
Started Recover Disk creation at 11:00 am EST and finished making 6 disks at 12:30 PM so 1hour and a half elapsed time.

Installed Intel Wirless 6300-N Ultimate Card and loaded drivers. Now Im removing bloatwhere and then installing 10.3 preview drivers. Then loading some games!!

No it should have come with either the Razer Copperhead or the HP Envy mouse, but the initial shipments got shafted with Abyssus.

Oh really! So when mine finally ships on Friday I should be expecting a mouse with more than 3 buttons?

... Wait a second, the HP Envy is a laptop, and the Copperhead is old and isn't even on the official website anymore. I think you meant the HP Voodoo. I think you may have been right about the copperhead, although that was not anything announced by Asus, just speculation based on the other Asus laptops.

I am having a MAJOR dilemma.

I will write in point form, since this may be a long post...would really like to hear some feedback (also may double post in the Sager section to get additional feedback - apologizing in advance)...

    1) I am NOT a gamer. I will play a few games here and there, but what I really want is an AFFORDABLE powerhouse for Adobe CS4, video, photoshop, web design and day-day computer work. I want a 17" screen - that is not negotiable.

    2) I was "set" on the Asus G73, until all the problems keep cropping up. I want a no-nonsense machine with the smallest chance of issues, problems, etc...

    3) I am starting to look at the Sager/Clevo 870U and the new Lenovo W701s coming out soon...not sure which way to go here...

    Some questions I have are:

    a) Is it worth $550 to go from a i7-820 to a i7-920 if I have no plans on any overclocking?

    b) What is the difference between the screens on the Clevo 870U and the Asus G73?

    c) Am I better off with a Nvidia 285 over the Ati 5870 considering the number of GPU issues cropping up with the 5870?

    d) What about the "other" comparisons between the 2 machines - keyboard, extra buttons, cooling, general feel of the machine - don't care about aestetics just funtionality...?

Lastly - is there ANY OTHER machine I should consider in the $1500 to $2800 range?

    THANKS!! ;)

a - the i7 720 would be fine for your needs.

    b - don't know.

c - I am a nvidia fan but I have had no problems with the 5870. It seems that there was a bad batch but other than that what problems are there?

d - this is subjective. To get a feel of the asus keyboard you could go to your local best buy and see how a 17" is laid out. cooling is great on the G73 IMO. I type A LOT and for me the feel is one of the best I have tried on a laptop.

You won't find a better machine at this time in terms of price/performance.

I'm enjoying mine what little I can (since I can't play games right now, busy with a project). I wouldn't worry too much about the issues since they seem to be relatively isolated cases.

If you're going for the 920, you'd better be OCing it... Although you may want to consider the GPU (more heavily) since more apps (like Photoshop) are taking advantage of it.

The number of issues seems to be relatively small and seems to only be affecting the Asus 5870s (bad batch?).

If you decide to avoid the Asus, I'd definitely pick up a Sager.

Both will suit those needs. The Sager does have eSATA, not sure if that is something you use.

The Sager/Clevo might be better here as it has been out for longer. But, any machine COULD have issues. I owned a Sager NP8760 and I really liked it and had no performance issues. I returned it for other reasons.

Sager/Clevo is my vote if it were between those two only.

820 is fine in my honest opinion. If you have the money to throw at it though, might as well upgrade.

sleey0 has reported they are the SAME EXACT display.

Personal preference, maybe some other members will chime in. From what other senior members are reporting, the 5870 will out perform the 285.

The Sager/Clevo has an amazing and well established reputation in the cooling department. The Sager NP8760 I owned did not have any functional problems.

I like the Sager/Clevo with that much money to spend.

    notyou beat me :p

I have the Intel x25 160 G2 running in mine; you need to partition the SSD before installing Windows, highly recommend you choose NTFS. The "real" recovery disk offers a choice of partition schemes: recover to 1st partition only, recover to complete hard disk, recover to 2 partitions... did you see this when you first did the load on the SSD? If not you need to partition your new drive explicitly before loading the OS.

An aside: I think it sucks that ASUS is no longer furnishing a real Windows Recovery disk with these systems; it makes a clean install with the user choosing which if any ASUS programs and drivers to load impossible. Bad ASUS.

Hey THANKS for the feeback guys!!!

Although it doesn't make the decision any easier - some great info and facts!

I am really stuck at whether the extra $ for the Sager is worth it over the Asus...

One more question - does anyone know anything about the Sager Warranty and living in Canada? That is one concern - I know with Asus there are lots of Asus depots around here, but not sure about Sager and how it would work if warranty was required...

It's likely the white balance, the LEDs have a very slight blue color temperature (same with the backlight of the LCD) that is being exaggerated in the photos. I didn't spend much time calibrating or correcting them. The Windows desktop in the first picture is also more blue than in reality.

I did partition it before recovery and formatted with NTFS. As i dont have the recovery disk you have to make the 6 dvd recovery which does not have any options at all.

The m0 actually has an unboxing video on YouTube (and linked somewhere in the forums as well) that actually shows some footage of the bag - and is pretty easy to find if you just search for the G73 there.

I have a few good pictures of the G73 bag in my review.

Its a good bag, my favorite one from Asus so far. I prefer the laptop to have a center sleeve but after about a week the bag "broke in" letting me put it in the rear sleeve pretty easy. The rubberized lid on the G73 makes it harder to get in/out of any bag since it grips with more friction than just plastic.

I keep getting crashes still. Sometimes with vertical lines, sometimes with full screen of 1 color (black/grey/white/red/brown/others). While gaming, surfing, or simply idling. I tried restoring to factory settings, still no good. crashes with original drivers for the gpu, crashes with the update from the support.asus.com website, crashes with the 10.3 preview. I ran the windows memory diagnostic tool to check the ram. It turned up with no errors. Perhaps I should try another ram test?
I think the problem is that the gpu is faulty but i don't know.. any ideas on what to do next?

    Thanks
