Just a quick followup. I was confused about the expressgate but it did in fact install successfully. The install placed a few folders on my c:\ drive called ASUS.000, ASUS.DAT and ASUS.SYS. I thought I was supposed to be prompted upon bootup. I was supposed to shutdown the PC and then press the expressgate button (it's the middle button on the upper left) and that caused it to boot into expressgate.

Nice! Now that's what I call a clear and concise set of instructions! Thanks! Now all I have to do is wait for my unit to arrive. ;)

I have the keyboard with the stick spacebar issue. I called Asus and they are sending me a replacement keyboard. They asked if I know how to do it and I said yes because I don't feel like shipping the entire notebook if I can easily upgrade the keyboard myself.

The question is how to open up the case and expose the keyboard? Any tips? thanks.

Just got off the phone with ASUS Tech Support. I have to ship this baby out soon with proof of purchase and I'm all set. I was wondering though, I did a clean install with my own Windows 7 disc (official, mind you not bootleg -_-). Should I restore it to factory default or leave it as be. If I leave it as be, hehe, they'll get a nice little login screen with white lines and what nots. The surefire way to indicate it's a hardware problem. Hehe.

Here's to camping out on campus again for computer use. FML.

Anyone else have issue with the placement of the button to open/close the DVD bay? It sitting in a place that it frequently opens when I use the laptop on my lap. If you pick up the laptop and lift in that area it is in a place that makes it open easily. So any way of disabling the button by chance?

Yes, but you need to import the Asus OEM certificate( View attachment 46710 )firstly and then import the key on the bottom sticker.
Two commands need to be executed as Administrator after fresh installation.
    Code:
    slmgr.vbs -ilc WIN7_ASUS.XRM-MS
    Code:
    slmgr -ipk YOUR_WINDOWS_KEY_ON_STICKER

Thank you so much for this one! This is extremely useful and easy to apply.

Follow up question though, where can we find the slmgr.vbs script?

    Hi all,

Been installing and testing games for a week now and finally got a chance to run my first stock vantage run lol. Not bad for stock if you ask me. I am not having any issues with this machine whatsoever.

    Link

List of working games installed so far:
Batman Arkham Asylum, Battlefield Bad Company 2, BioShock 2, Black Site Area 51, Borderlands, Call of Duty MW, Call of Duty MW2, Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Dirt 2, Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, Avatar, Mass Effect 2, Raven Squad, Risen, Stalker Call of Pripyat, Oblivion (with expansions), The Saboteur, The Witcher, Wolfenstien, Vanguard, EQ2, EQ, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Star Wars Galaxies, World of War Craft, Star Trek Online, LOTR Online, Half-life, Half-life 2.

All Games were patched to latest level and I’m running the 10.3 Catalyst preview drivers. There is still 327 Gig free on C and 320 Gig Free on D :)

just wondering if the GPU sensor is not readable from the original G73 VGA driver?? I am not able to get the GPU temperature even using the AMD GPU clock tool....

Do I have to install the CCC 10.2 / 10.3 bata to make it work??

That file is the driver only, to get the enable intel wireless connections settings option in the wireless properties you need the 13.1.1.0 file. :)

You do have to click on and enable each of the 3 temp sensors on the AMD GPU Tool. After you've done that, you need to click the 'Start' button for the reads.

    Q

EDIT: You only need to enable the 3 sensors once. After that it's just the Start button per use.

    No prob MrSeaBass :)

So I just got my A2 10 minutes ago, got it all booted up, and it seems to have a noise (im guessing Hard drive) but it sounds like a fan hitting a piece of paper every revolution, then stops. Not sure if this is normal? Everything is quiet, then all of a sudden when i open something the noise comes into play.

Right :) For ultimate redundancy I personally installed both the driver-only installation and the connection utility. I'm just mentioning the installed driver version (as seen in the device manager) is 13.1.1.1 in case there's confusion.

Depends on who you bought from. You can always deal directly with Asus, but in my experience, going with manufacturer often means receiving "refurbished" computers. In my case, Amazon simply processes an exchange and ships a replacement as soon as they have one in inventory (still waiting). In the meantime, I use mine only in ExpressGate mode because it seems to be stable for longer before the inevitable crash. Another option is return it as defective and order a new one if you think you'll be serviced before a replacement. Defective returns should not incur restocking/shipping fees.

Amazon has been showing "Preorder" status for weeks now, yet there have been several here that reported receiving a computer from them in that time. I speculate that I might not receive a replacement until, and if, they get enough in to satisfy all standing orders AND have extra on hand to offer for immediate purchase. For that reason, I ordered a 2nd laptop from them to hedge my bets. I'll cancel whichever didn't ship first--hoping they don't get processed on the same day.

Ya, the .26 is specific for the 5870.
Depends on what your ambient is, but 50C isn't out of the norm for idle or light use.

Just got it and have a short while to check up on it. So far I'm very pleased.

Since it was an A2 converted from DVD -> BD, it has the "generic" 3 button mouse, and I am using my Logitech 518mx (that I've had for nearly 5 years). Overall it runs very well and I'll need to check on the graphics.

The keyboard. . . meh. It's not a pleasure to type on is all I'm saying. The buttons aren't quite as responsive as I would like, though I've noticed with some computers that you need to use it for awhile for the keyboards to "break in," which might be the case.

I'm burning the restore discs (though I think the Windows 7 Recovery Media disc is the pre-installed setup isn't it?

I'm looking forward to a sleepless night later (of the good variety lets hope. . . lol)

Was your previous screen/laptop particularly bright?

My XPS M1330 has a really bright screen and when i go back to any of my other computers they feel quite dim even though their screen-brightnesses are all average.

opinions are going to vary on what "very brighter" means, a picture may be worth a thousand words. Also check your profile settings and make sure your not on some reduced brightness plan, are you on batt or plugged in? Yes I know you said you turned it all the way up, but if you just got it, you may not be totally familiar with all the ins and outs.

My advice would be not to go nuts changing things right away, but since you already started, my next advice is to not install any video drivers not provided by Asus (e.g. ATI 10.3P).

It's bright enough for me @ 40... :) Try go the the power4Gear hybrid thing and see if you are stuck in the battery saving profile...

I just exp my first BSOD in 4 days..... when I am dealing with the screen saver thing... Somehow the screen saver and the "turn off display" sems cannot co-exist.... I set the screen saver@ 5 mins and "turn off display" @ 10 mins.. it doesn't work.. keep staying @ the screen saver..

It take ~10 mins to restart afterward with all those update... weird...

I have a question for anyone more experienced with SSDs...

I cloned my C drive as it came from ASUS onto an intel SSD and then swapped the SSD in place of the C drive. So now I have the SSD with the OS and whatnot installed on it and the secondary HD for data.

I have read that it is best to only put things on the SSD that will not often be changed / overwritten.

As described earlier in this thread I moved all my use document file locations over to my secondary drive.

My question is whether or not I should be concerned about moving my Windows Temp folder where browser cookies and whatnot are stored over to my secondary HD - and if so, how would I go about doing that? I tried to do it in the same way the user document folders can be moved, but when I went to properties for the folder there was no location tab.

Thanks in advance for any info / assistance.

All sounds fine, I don't think you have anything to worry about, enjoy.

Better to wait until it becomes official from Asus off their site, but choice is yours. My understanding is this isn't a standard ATI card, it's an Asus build. Like my Sapphire desktop card that puts out their own driver version, it seems Asus will be doing the same, I may be wrong.

what do you mean by "bright enough for me @ 40". Is there any way to measure the brightness? I spoke to asus tech, he gave me RMA #. I do not know if I need to replace the laptop if I feel brightness is dim. My laptop has 1333MH RAM. Any way to measure the brightness?

As what, "used model with dim screen"? That ought to sell well.

The screens on these machines are blindingly bright if functioning properly. If yours isn't one of the brightest you've seen on a laptop it's not working right, but you won't foist it off on some other poor sucker without warning, I hope.

LCD's tend to ship way too bright out of the box for most people. Just like tv's usually ship with overblown colors and brightness. Its nicknamed "torch mode", sarcastically. Mine is at about 75% on the overlay graphic "pie chart" at the moment. Its 5 "Fn+dim" button-presses down from max. Max is ridiculously bright for my taste. I don't think I would ever use it. If I am in dimmer lighting I even turn it down several notches more.

Also worth noting is that I change the color settings (including brightness, contrast, gamma, etc) for video windows separately from my desktop color settings, because they do not suit each other vs black levels and detail-in-blacks for movies.
