Yeah, 150mbps tops- it's what I have mine connected at now. I'd like a 300mbps connection, but don't think I really need it. The Atheros is a really solid card in my opinion- I'm seeing wireless networks in my neighborhood I've never seen before on the 2.4 G band.

Range, stability, and latency are more important for gamers. So I'm with you, why bother with the intel 6200? It won't help most of us.

On another note, how are you all feeling about the g73 build quality? How would you compare it to a MacBook pro, for those of you who have used both?

Build quality of the G73 is great, but it's no Macbook Pro or M17x. With as much technology as ASUS has managed to cram into this $1600 lappy, something had to give.

    So who bought Metro 2033?

I think the G73 is about the only laptop out there right now that really fits the preferred specs for this game.

Its almost a perfect fit actually even including the 8GB RAM & DX11 GPU

I hope this is not another Crysis where the game is heavily optimized for Nvidia cards only because its a "sponsored by Nvidia" game and I can name 2 games that were sponsored by nvidia that just magically never went too well with ATI.

Did anyone get a chance to try the new catalyst drivers, or do we need to wait for Asus specific ones?

Oh nevermind, AMD is only releasing it to their website on the 24th. Its ridiculous that they haven't even released a set of non-beta/preview drivers yet. Hopefully we still have more performance coming to us :)

WHQL drivers on the 24th. Non-WHQL are supposedly coming today, but aren't released yet. The 10.2 cats are out on AMD's "non-official" site- http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx .

    Hi all,

Sorry if it has been asked before but i didn't find the answer.

Can anybody post a link to the drivers for Windows XP 32 bit ? There're not on Asus officiel website, except for the card reader.

    Thank you.

Drivers for obsolete/unsupported OSs are going to be increasingly hard to find! It's unlikely manufacturers of new devices are going to write drivers for old OSs, but many do.

Maybe you can get them all in one place, but you may need to try to find drivers from the individual device manufacturers.

FWIW, if you must use XP these days, install Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate and use the XP compatibility mode just for the apps that need it!

I would guess maybe its due to some assumption that gaming performance would be better in XP. However the benchmarks show that there is hardly any difference when compared to 7. Also I can't get over how ugly XP is in comparison.

Also.... the laptop has 8gb of ram, why would you install a 32bit version (although I hear 64bit XP is terrriibbllee), this means less that 3gb of use ram is being utilized.

For compatibily issues with some softwares. Of course i know it'd be better with XP 64 bit but i can't use it either. Anyway i don't need more than 3 GB of RAM.

The download links are still incorrect for the Mobility drivers. I guess we should wait for a few more hours for the correct Windows 7 drivers to appear.

    catalyst_mobility_64-bit_util.exe => 1.09 MB
    catalyst_mobility_32-bit_util.exe => 930 KB

According to their Twitter page, "The download links are wrong - the page went up about one hour too early. Just wait a bit, will tweet when its good"

    http://twitter.com/CatalystMaker

You really should consider upgrading to Windows 7. What "other software" are you referring to?

Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate and use the XP compatibility mode just for the apps that need it!

You're the exact user that feature is targeted for.

You still get to use all your RAM, you still get to use the latest drivers...

XP is unsupported by Microsoft for new installs so is pretty much obsolete at this point. :)

And don't buy software from any company who writes software that only runs on XP. That's just lame (IMO as someone who has been writing software for PCs since before there was Windows) ;)

it really waste of performance/future if you installed XP, why don't u keep win 7 and use VMware make virtual of XP, since for sure i will do lots of virtualitations since i order this lappie last week :D

It changed my driver packaging number in CCC to 8.712.100302b. It was 8.712.00xx something before. I wonder what's going on then.

I wish we could ditch all of our old 3rd party vendor software that we use at my work. We have programs that required Novel and Winnt up until a year ago. Some still require 2000 and Xp. I agree though, if it's for your own personal machine, Xp mode in Windows 7 is exactly what that's for!

Too early for migration, for softwares, some peripherals and Windows itself. Do you know any compagny that migrate just after a new OS is released ? It's suicidal, especially when you use loads of softwares and materials.

VMware might be a solution, i agree. But it is not an easy way for some inexperienced users. I don't trust at all the Windows compability mode for their old OS. They do this for many years and it has never been reliable.

Too early? XP is over 8 years old.

You cannot compare Windows 7 XP compatibility mode with any previous version of Windows. Windows 7's XP compatibility feature runs a full licensed edition of XP Pro SP3 in a VM inside Windows 7. That means you can run your modern apps in Windows 7 along side legacy apps running in XP.

But do what you want or need to do...I'm just saying - getting obsolete OS drivers for new hardware is not necessarily going to be easy...

So you're ok with buying a new, rev 1, untested PC, but you fear new software features? Software can be rolled back... You've got the perfect modern high-end machine to test this new stuff on, yet you're fine with crippling it to an old 32-bit OS... ;)

But that's the only OS which works with ALL my peripherals. Some of them are old. Simply for this.

And when i say "too early", i mean it's never good to get a brand new OS because of the unknown bugs and because of the time it takes to get a succeed migration from software editors and hardware manufacturers.

I'll migrate to Seven after two services pack released, and when i'll get new hardware to replace the old ones (not compatible for now).

It's just a matter of migration and OS "maturity". Besides this, Seven will be a great OS.

Although I agree with you on the 'wait till it matures' Windows 7 really isn't Windows 7, its windows 6.1 or something (so vista .1) so its vista with a whole lotta crap cut out of it, and streamlined, I am actually very surprised at how much I prefer it so far.

I would say you're kind of nuts to use this computer as a "work" laptop since you're wasting the capabilities. (1/2 the ram, no Windows XP.) If I was allowed to pull in a personal laptop for work (which I am) I'd definitely use VMware or compatibility mode or something so I could play with all the shiny toys....

How would one underclock their GPU? I'm waiting and waiting for a replacement from Amazon but in the meantime trying to get by with this defective unit. I find it works for a while until temps get to a certain point and then just routinely crashes soon after every reboot. So running it in Safe Mode and ExpressGate permits longest runtime but I'd prefer to boot normally and keep the GPU as cool as possible.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Ah. Good old Windows 2000. At work we still have a server running it (not sure if it's virtualized or not). I did however just finish virtualizing two Windows NT 4 machines (VMware is a godsend). If only we could move off of XP (stupid government standards...).

I just did a complete reinstall from the Recovery DVD i made from the system. I noticed that the bloatware was still there after the reinstall and i did not have to type up any windows code so I'm thinking i did it wrong?
I installed the DVD Drivers that actually came with it and its working fine but i was wondering if i should download the ones from the site directly, since they're more up to date. Also planning to finally upgrade to 10.3 and start stressing it so i gotta find that link.

    Hey everyone,
Long time reader, first time poster. Got my G73 yesterday and its a beast of a machine. Just wanted to clarify a couple of things.
    1. On heavy load the power adapter gets pretty hot. How hot can i expect it to get?
    2. Internet seems to be slower on the G73 compared to my PC (both on a wireless network). I have to do a clean install and see if that makes a difference. Any one else experience any slow downs while browsing?
    Thanks

You likely have the Atheros card in there and it has a 150Mbps max throughput. Your desktop probably has a higher max.

Well, good news, but I will refrain from joyous consideration until it arrives.

Asus has had my RMA unit since Tuesday morning and they just called to tell me it is a hardware failure. Their only replacement stock was an A1. They offered me that while removing the bag and mouse. I said it was cool as an extra HDD and a BD read drive backup was more than enough for my troubles and if the memory is only 1066 (crosses fingers for cas7).

I was sleeping so I didn't have my wits about me to ask what the hardware failure was or if the replacement had the recovery disc, but neither of these really matter at this point. The question I did think of asking was when will it ship. He said Thursday.

If an A1 arrives by mid next week, I will be a happy Asus RMA customer and hopefully we can all (those affected) get over this hardware hump and enjoy our beast of configs for the nice price.

Congrats Q! I'm glad to hear you won't have to wait for three weeks and a day to get your replacement system. But that does make me wonder how the guy who had the X1 received a complete A1 as a replacement, and how I got shafted. I think I am going to give them a call and request that I get 4 sticks of 1333 RAM and a restore disc.

    Again, congrats Q.

I've just ordered this computer, and I'm really looking forward to it. However, I only bought the stock model. (Asus G73JH-A2 Intel Quad Core I7-720QM (1.6GHz) 8Gb DDR3 1Tb 72RPM HDD (500Gb x2) ATI 5870 1Gb VRAM DVDRW 17.3" LED (Black)

Should I have customized it? Is there anything important I should know? And what's the difference between the 720GM 1066 and the 1333? Will this make a noticeable difference? I'm planning on doing a lot of gaming with this thing.

OMG. You got the stock model? That thing is the worst.

Actually that's just fine. The cpu upgrade (unless you go for the 920 and OC the hell out of it) is a waste of money unless you are serious about saving every minute on encoding. The thermal paste upgrade won't show much difference for the work it takes to get to the cpu. 1333 ram will show ZERO performance gains in anything at all over the 1066. You may save 2 minutes on a 2 hour encode, and that's pushing it. You would only gain points in a memory benchmark, and even then it's not worth singing about.

I had a classmate bring in his laptop with Windows ME on it during study group. 'Twas a sight to behold.

Holy crap, I'm giddy with excitement. My RMA'ed lappy just arrived in CA and I might call ASUS when I see it delivered so I can ask for an update. That is awesome, congrats Q! (And sorry for blowing up the PMs, lol).

This would not affect browsing speeds. The 150Mbps to 300Mbps jump only affects network speeds, actually Wireless G (54Mbps) is technically just as good as Gigabit Lan for just browsing speeds.

Ok- stupid question to the owners. Whenever I boot up, it changes from my default theme (wallpaper swapping every 30 mins) to an "unsaved theme" every time. I delete the theme but it always comes back.

I haven't modified the uxtheme file, and I did some searching and it could be because of the power settings. Does anyone else have this? I am using "balanced" and was wondering if it was the cause.

That is a custom theme that is set to come up whenever the notebook goes into battery mode by default. It goes away once you plug the AC adapter back in.

Thanks for the reply. However, I'm sure I was plugged in both times, and it didn't go away until I deleted it. Also, there's a check box that allows you to uncheck the rotation of the wallpaper when on battery mode- either checked or unchecked it still creates that theme.

Finally, it is about to appear in Italy at a very good price (1400€-1500€ for the A1, at that price there's nothing comparable here)... what's your opinion about it? Is it worth the price?
Is buying it too risky? Is the percentage of faulty G73's too high?

    Thanks.

I don't think anyone knows for sure how many owners there are and how many owners have problems, so calculating a percentage isn't really possible.

My opinion - totally worth the price. I purchased based on specs alone, as gaming for me is just a side thing. The G73 has surpassed my hopes and expectations so far, and I've had no problems.

    Just my opinion :)

From what I've been reading, it seems as if most of the defective laptops were from the initial shipments. Lately I have hardly seen any posts declaring hardware issues. Also we must assume that most buyers are not posting here, and those with hardware issues are finding there way on here for that reason. IMO I would not expect a faulty laptop in the later shipments.

Well 9 days into my replacement model and almost everything is going superbly.

Two things I need solutions to:

    1. The BR is very slow when installing games and software. Were talking 20 to 40 minutes + for everything. I have been out of gaming for a couple of years... Should games like Crysis, Bio-shock, and GTA IV take up to an hour to load / install from the BR?

    2. My DL times are horrible. I have never been able to go above 800Kb and have been low as 250KB. It also seems to get slower as the Dl continues. The Wife's Lappy is just fine on the same network (Home - High Speed Internet)

    Any suggestions

    1. Not sure as I only use mine to watch movies. But... probably. A lot of the current BD players have slow DVD speeds.

    2. 800kbps is slow? :) I have gotten over 1mbps on some downloads (torrents) but that's kind of rare for me, and I have tested my broadband and it's decent. What are you expecting? It's dependent on the server most of the time.

I would not think that games would take 40+ minutes to install; 20 sounds a little high yet reasonable. I would think it would be between 10-20.

As for internet speeds, I have read of 3 complaints thus far. It may be something to do with the Atheros card, yet I would just try to find an updated driver. If all else fails you can always get an intel 6200, or any other intel wireless card for ~35$ on ebay and install it very easily (Avoid cards with 3 antennas).

I strongly suggest going to speedtest.net and try it out. Keep track of your speeds, then next step is to do the same with your wife's computer. This should tell you if yours is actually slower.
