Recovery DVDs, plural, right? I think I've read it takes 6 DVDs and you get to recover the machine to it's out-of-box, bloated configuration...

Now that Asus is no longer including the single DVD that's been/being used for clean installs, is there any way to get a copy of that bad boy from any of our early adopters?

For anyone who has ordered and is waiting, or has yet to order I am sure any of the 'full service' vendors habitually mentioned on this thread will include this for no extra charge. I have emailed ASUS support and asked them to post the image for download from their site but have yet to hear back. I will re-post when I do. BTW, Greg, FORDS rule!

I just got one of these beasts yesterday and proceeded to install Catalyst 10.3 preview. Later when I did some gaming, namely Serious Sam HD, I got lockups/corruption very quickly. I thought I had a defective notebook.

Then I did some testing with Furmark and found that the crashing wasn't temperature related because one time it crashed within seconds, before it could heat up.

So I then began to wonder what else could be the cause, and thought of those Catalyst 10.3 drivers. I uninstalled them and installed the ASUS video driver pack from their web site.

And now all is good. Apparently Catalyst 10.3 does not get along with these machines, or at least not with my machine anyway. Anyone else seeing this?

Is there any altenartive software or newer creative sound software which can be download, because I also have the issue with the Asus integrate Creative Sound software. I notice that without the creative sound software the bass can not be activated.

No. Been using them. Was playing some Wolfenstein for a couple hours on my lap without issue.

On a totally different note- regarding my system continuing to create an "unsaved theme" that didn't keep my theme settings on bootup- I found the solution. I uninstalled Power4Gear since I had read that some power themes could cause trouble. It worked fine. As a test I reinstalled and it's still been fine- guess it was a wonky inital install from ASUS.

Well we turned in a Ford with only 100K miles on it because it was falling apart. On the trade in, we were told the dealership had no intention of selling it, but just auctioning it for parts. Also while driving it, one of the worst car experiences, rattled so bad. The car was only used for driving to and from school, no long trips. What a piece of crap.

Grandfather passed away, we sent his Taurus to a scrap yard, with only 70K miles on it, but still was rusting and complete garbage. Because my grandpa was totally just beating the crap out of it too... will never ever buy a Ford with my experience.

On the other hand, have driven a restored '76 GTO convertible before and it is more than thrilling. It is an incredible car.

When I installed the 10.3a drivers, I tried Borderlands. Borderlands was horrible and I got dizzy immediately because of the frame stuttering, slow down, tearing and overall I was horrified. I uninstalled Power4Gear and all of the above dissappeared. I'm not sure what it's doing, but not good.

Firstly a big hello to everyone, I've finally joined the owners lounge..!

Just wanted to give a shout out to Ken from gentech as I just received my a1 a couple of days ago!!

I'm absolutely loving this thing as i'm sure everyone else is too =)

He always answered back any mails very promptly, and always gave very informative answers. His service was top notch, and the shipping was fast too!

A very professional and friendly person, would highly recommend him to anyone!

Also, just wanted to ask in general, my cpus idle around 42-45C and the vid card sensors are as follows on average while idling(using amd gpu clock tool):

    58C
    66C
    57C

Just wondering, are all these temps seeming ok for idling or do any of them sound a bit too hot..? Also, which ones mean what? As they all just say the same thing in the field, I'm guessing the hotter one is the memory..? At least I hope it is lol

Also while giving a play on a bit of an older MMO game (city of heroes with everything maxed, only one i've played so far, plan to throw some ME2 at it tomorrow when i get a chance hehe) it was showing the middle value as 93C!! (the one i'm thinking is memory) at tops, while averaging about 87C.

The other values were about 71C.

So do these seem about right for the kind of game it is, as well as the idle temps? Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

Just wanna make sure my new baby is running fine hehe

Finally glad to be part of the owners lounge!!

Hey guys, I don't own one so I have a few questions.

Sorry if I'm re-posting a question, I'm too lazy to read the previous 200 pages of post.

    K

    1) Is the rubber surface removable
    2) Is the cover rubber too?
    3) Is it loud? How loud?
    4) will there be available options for the color of it? not custom or like a skin

The comment too lazy to read the 200 pages is really annoying. All you need to do is read the very first post where OP was nice enough to provide all the details and links you need for the laptop.

The answer to all you questions is no.

Go to start, in the search for programs and files, type dxdiag.

On the Display tab should see driver version: 8.712.0.0

If you want a mouse, go to NewEgg or Amazon. They both have free shipping on the Logitech MX518 for $39.99 with $15 mail in rebate, total $24. Best deal for a gaming mouse, and the MX518 is still my favorite mouse. I'm ordering another one as my current one needs to be replaced. I don't like the new G500 and the Razer Imperator is a bit too expensive.

MX518 is a far better than the Razer Abyssus I believe and in the end cost you less than to buy an Abyssus.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104178

Also the free shipping for NewEgg for me usually arrives about 2-3 business days. It's quite fast since for me they ship from New Jersey.

The adapter is extremely hot after running it for a few hours. The computer is cool but the adapter feels very hot. i hope it's not a problem. I'm comparing the g73 adapter to my friend's notebook adapter. it was a lot hotter than theirs.

I didn't care much for the heat of the PSU either, you can always buy a 180w adapter as it will give more headroom. I might be picking up a 180w or more myself.

Noob question here... I'm quite interested by this laptop but... Is this little beast able to powerup a Dell 3008 monitor ?

If yes, do I need anything special for the hdmi to dvi conversion ? Or a simple hdmi cable is enough?

Otherwise any asus laptop able to powerup the 3008 monitor ?

    Thanks

2560 x 1600 res will be a back breaker for any mobile gpu, prob even a dual mobile.

2560 x 1600 res requires dual DVI output, no chance for the G73.

That monitor has a HDMI input for 1080 res which is the G73 native res, so watching BR and playing games at 1080 through HDMI will be fine, but you are just overpaying for a 30" screen.

Now if you had a desktop PC that could use the monitor at full res and just wanted to occasionally hook up your G73 for 1080 res, then go for it, but your G73 isn't going to use that monitors full potential and you'll be better off buying a 32-40" 1080p LCD TV if you wanted around 30" physical inches to look at.

I've been wondering if it had been worth it to have bought the Blu-Ray model. My computer isn't here yet, so this is just a what-if question, and I have a PS3, so this doesn't really affect me.

But I've been wondering if Blu-Ray vs. DVD on a laptop screen even makes a difference. This one's already in 1080p, and with a screen this small, would you even notice a difference?

I always wondered this also. IN the HT world Bluray really isn't noticable under 32/40" tv's & 720p is plenty. But in the cpu world seems you need 1080p with a 17" or it's crap? Someting I don't understand? But if you have a Ps3 I don't think you need the bluray. Why would you want to watch a movie on tiny laptop when you have a TV with a much bigger screen?

You do notice a difference DVD vs. Blu ray at least depending on how close you are sitting to the laptop.

720 vs 1080 is not very noticeable. Which is partially why I wonder why some guys throw such a hissy fit about the low resolution Asus models

I have spend KKKKK on TV, projectors , audio ect... TV I know but I can't understand the diff on PC?? But I don't have one to compare. :(

Probably because I don't feel like packing my 60" screen in a backpack and carrying it with me along with the PS3, amp, speakers, receiver. I don't mind lugging the remote controls with me though.

To me, and I would think at least some other people, the higher resolution is important not really for blu-ray play back, but just for screen real estate.

In fact, I wish i could get the 'older' 1920x 1200 resoultion (WUXGA)!

The thing people forget about "telling the difference" between DVD or even 720 vs 1080 is that the screen size makes little difference. The VIEWING DISTANCE is the variable you have to take into the equation.

As you can see here, the further you sit away, the less the resolution matters. This chart is for HDTV's, but you can still use it in application. The simple matter- YES, you can tell the difference between DVD and BD on this screen- wholeheartedly yes.

    A fair point

Makes it kind of funny though, i've been setting up multiple 1280x1024 19" monitors for some ladies at work so they have more real estate. Of course some of them still have their resolution set to 800x600

My friend and I both had very similar laptops, same video card and all, pretty much the only difference was that mine was a Satellite and his was an XPS with a higher resolution screen.

I can't express how much better his screen was (1920x1200 vs 1400x900). It looked sooo much better, on top of having so much more real estate. I do not think I would buy a 17" with a resolution any lower than 1080p. The only downside is that in not too long we may be forced to drop the resolution sub-native res as games become more gpu intensive. Hopefully this will still take a couple of years though :S

If you can't tell the difference between SD and HD on this screen, you need to rush to your eye doctor immediately, like get off your seat and go now!

You can tell the difference between 720p and 480p on a 14" screen. If you can't then your eyes are seriously messed up, and need to get a new pair. Scream at god if you can't tell the difference.

Most of all, anyone don't believe this, please don't try encoding video :p No one will want to watch what you encode if you can't even see the simple difference between 720 and 480 never mind looking for differences in interlacing, blocking, detail loss etc on 720 v 720.

I'm guessing those even ponder this can't tell whether a BD is upscaled or not either.

Yea. That was what I wanted to confirm; That the OS was installed in the physical 2.5" hd sitting in the middle of the laptop. :D This way, I can just swap out the 2.5" hd closer to the edge of the laptop for a higher capacity one.

Awesome. Hope to be joining this thread soon myself. Mind stating when you ordered, what model, from whom, and when it shipped?

Alright. My laptop is here! :D

Everything seems to be working great. The keyboard is a bit loose for my liking, but it seems like it'll be easy to type with.

One question though: It didn't come with a recovery disk for Windows 7. Is it possible to still do a clean install of it without the disk?

    Hello All,

I have been following this laptop since first posted on the Xotic and Gentech websites, and read about 1/2 of the all the posts about it, and FINALLY placed my order with Ken at Gentech a couple hours ago.

I gotta hand it to him, he answered about 70 e-mails from me with lightning fast responses over the last 3 months. Getting it shipped to Australia with an eta of: god knows ! haha

Cant wait to get it for some serious pew pew time !!

    Ronin
