i also got mine today!!! 3/24 at 5pm cst
it seems to be working fine. i want to get rid of all the bloatware tho, what would be the best/easiest way to do that? is there a way to manually go in and just delete them or would it be better to just reinstall windows 7 ???
i got a nice cooler for it that it fits onto well. its not too heavy, keyboard is good, temps seem fine, its very quiet, I'm pretty happy with this thing. its a beast. im tryin to figure out where the fan intake is at? is it through the keyboard? or from the bottom? i know it goes out the back but where does it come in?
-
i read in a review the intake is at the top above the keyboard possibly?
-
My GPU temp is around 59-61C and CPU temp is around 46-50 both temp are normal?, and I have using HWIFON32 to check my system info, and my each 2GB Ram is showing clock 667MHz but when I going to BIO is showing 1333MHz so I am confused? My Ram is Hynix HMT125S6TFR8C-H9 so wiered because others got kingston memory and dont know who is better memory compare with Hynix?
-
DDR Ram is doubled what is shown or something like that. ASUS wouldn't give you 667mhz ram, so you have 1333mhz.
I've had mine for 1 or two weeks now. No problems what so ever. I have the TZ model (Australian version of A1 model, exactly the same but with free headphones as well as mouse and backpack).
The ASUS mouse that comes with it is not good for us lefties. I do everything except gaming with my left han. Due to the layout of evey keyboard I play games with my right hand so I like an ambidexturous mouse. This mouse is contoured for left handers and the 'thumb buttons' which become ring and little finger buttons for lefties are accidentally pressed all the time for me as a lefty.
I went out and spent big on a Razer Mamba. Its not necessarily left handed but at least it's contoured so it's not uncomfortable. It's also good to have a wireless option.
Has anyone updated any drivers yet, and is there any need to? -
The cooling on the memory modules isn't that great, so don't push it. Memory module is just crappy thermal pads. -
I originally posted this somewhere else but i have also been following this forum so i thought i would share here too.
OK, i have had my A1 for about 30 hours or so and i have got everything where i want it and its stable and fine. So i just wanted to give a little feedback of everything i have done and some of the problems i have experienced. Besides, i don't want to be like everyone else and just abandon my fellow waiters once i get my sh!t.
As soon i as i got it i checked for dead pixels and such and just stared at how beautiful it was, and no joke i actually ran my hand across the back of it and got cold chills. i guess i just wanted this thing toooooo bad. (NO HOMO) Then i installed REVO uninstaller and went to town because i didn't want to do another complete install until i decide to get an SSD. There was a lot bloatware on it like some of the pointless ASUS crap, Trial Microsoft office, Windows live crap, and other random games, anti virus and a few others. For this i found a good breakdown at Notebookreview.com that listed all of the ASUS programs and whether they were important to have or not and really many of them are useless. Believe it or not the almighty REVO didn't see everything on the computer but what REVO missed Windows 7 control panel got.
I was installing programs at the same time i was uninstalling ( probably shouldn't have done that but i knew my wife would start b@tching about spending so much time on the computer). But i here is a list of everything i installed successfully:
1. Any DVD 6.1.0.2 (DVD copy protecting removal program)
2. DVDFAB Platinum 5.2.5.0 (DVD copying program)
3. Win RAR 380 (if you don't know then you shouldn't be reading this)
4. Microsoft office 2007 enterprise ( make sure you get the trial crap off first)
5. Avidemux 2.5.0 ( video editing program)
6. Auslogic disk defrag (De-fragmentation program)
7. Firefox
8. Gomplayer (awesome media player but i went to play an MKV with DTS and had no audio, but after some research i had to install FFDSHOW for the CODEC and then i got my DTS audio)
9. Speedfan for my sidebar widgets
10. itunes 64bit
11. symantec anti-virus Note: i was reading other forums and some guy said that he thought he had a lemon because it was being all slow and twichy after installing his anti-virus and was talking about returning it but it was probably because he didn't Un-install the trial anti-virus that was already on there first (just a thought).
12. CPU-Z just to check if i had 1333 RAM, and i did which is awesome.
13. IMGburn
14. Utorrent Which caused a problem. i will talk about it soon.
So that's my basic necessary program setup. i might be missing a few but I'm on my desktop not my A1 and i don't fell like double checking myself. Next i started to do the AI recovery disc program and on the third disc it gave me a fault and asked me to insert another third disc, which halfway through it gave me another fault asking for another third disc so i just canceled and did the windows 7 image backup and burnt a recovery disc. Which is good enough since i plan on keeping the recovery partition.
Speaking of partitions, the way they have these drives setup is kind of stupid. they have the OS partition at like 100-120 gig (cant remember) and the other drive split into 2 equal partitions. Eventually after i started installing games i had to extend my OS partition with the other partition on that drive. but i left the other drive split with my game ISO's on one partition and then my music and saved programs and other stuff on the other partition.
next i installed all of the windows updates except for the windows live stuff. I installed the Ethernet controller update in the optional updates.
So back to the utorrent problem. I was connected to my wireless router at the time. And i started downloading a couple torrents to make sure they are going where i wanted. then my wireless connection kept dropping and then reconnecting and then dropping and so on. i had reset my router and then tried to repair my connection but it kept happening. so i turned of UTorrent and then it stopped. then i turned it back on and it started again. I am running Utorrent on my desktop also so this was a big . but i found out i was running the old version of Utorrent on my desktop and the updated one on my A-1. so i deleted the newer version since it doesn't really install and then re-opened the older version and declined the update and then everything was smooth sailing from there. So be careful on you updates folks.
Ok, so after my image backup i started installing games:
1. Dirt 2 because i wanted to see the DX11 in action and it is F@cking amazing. I know people say games look realistic and i just laugh about it but i thought i was watching a rally race on TV.
2. Metro2033 ( haven't really played yet)
3. Dragon age origins ( haven't really played yet)
4. Mass effect 2 (amazing game that looks and plays ridiculously good, if you have some good headphones it fells like you are in a movie or something)
5. GRID ( haven't really played yet)
6. Modern warfare 2 ( haven't really played on PC yet but i destroy people everyday on XBOX 360)
7. Bioshock 2 ( haven't really played yet)
8. Just cause 2 ( haven't really played yet)
9. Borderlands ( haven't really played yet)
10. Napoleon Total War ( haven't really played yet but the intro video was insane)
I didn't really play every game but i at least started them and set the settings to max to make sure it could handle it.
Overall this computer is amazing. I still cant believe how quite it is. You just can't explain it, i guess you have to not hear it to believe it.
What people have said about the touch pad buttons being stiff and only responsive at the ends of the button are true but i got the good 5 button mouse so i wont be using the touch pad anytime soon.
Anyway i just wanted to give you guys something to read that might remind you why the wait is worth it. And just like everyone before me said, if you have any questions just post them. I'm not likely to stop reading the forums anytime soon, its already in my favorites and the characters are original and entertaining.
One more note: get that warranty taken care of. i had to mail off my Proof or purchase ( my order receipt from xotic) you only have 60 days, which i was pushing. So im not sure if some of you guys that have been waiting a long time might exceed that but hopefully ASUS will realize its their own fault. -

To get a cooling or not get a cooling pad - that is the question???
Looking at the 2 Thermaltake ones - the cheaper one and the more expensive aluminum one...
Any suggestions? -
No need really... the cooling is great as it is. If you're going to overclock then go for it, but if you're not then it's not needed.
Btw, what do we have to hit to get into the BIOS? -
well, is there A bois update for this computer???? Since I have had mine, when i open steam it freezes my comp, but if i dont open steam it runs fine. it runs fine in safe mode.
-
Edit: Or do this:
-
so the new ati drivers are out, and they dont even recognize the card? awesome
-
LOL apparently you don't actually own a G73... -
I also found settings that will let you keep the Creative software and still use Steam. Here's the link. -
Speaking of BIOS updates...
Have any of you updated to the 206 BIOS?
I'm wondering if it's just coincidence that my keyboard backlighting stopped working when I updated the BIOS... -
Looks like ATI backtracked there official Mobility for some reason. I wonder why. I am still working with the drivers that came installed on the laptop and will wait on updated drivers from ASUS.
While I am here, has anyone who had a system shipped overseas had any issues? I have had the system since Tuesday, everything is running fine apart from 1 of the 2 HDs being DOA. Asus UK refuse to just let me send them the drive and have it replaced. They need me to send them the whole system and advise a 3-4 week turnaround because the system is an import. Seems real odd seeing as a lot of you guys on here have had ASUS NA just swap components.
I have asked Ken/Gentech to try to sort the issue out for me, if all said about him on this forum is true I am sure he will come through.
Lastly, for any brits out there with this or any system with a US keyboard.
Can someone answer a stupid question and tell me where I can find the \ key on the keyboard after I have swapped the keyboard layout from US to UK? -
-
Cool, thanks -
-
You select your OS and radeon mobility from here if you are not using win7 64 http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx -
Evensen, here are the idle GPU temps you asked me to check out.

Maybe i missed it but here i go :Hi guys, well i just got my new laptop(Asus g73JH-A1). It's working great and I'm very happy with the peformance, ventrilo makes the laptop freeze/crash and I tried both the 64 and 32 bit versions of vent. I looked at some forums and did not get any helpfull tricks. Maybe this laptop is still too recent, I don't know. Any help would be greatly appriciated

(yours is more of a statement than an analogy, oh well..) :
Low test gasoline does what it is supposed to, but you may also pay a bit more for higher test gas in order to help your engine last longer. True the laptop temps are fine, but I would completely understand if someone wanted to keep them a little lower, for not much $.
Some also offer things like extra USB ports, which I will probably be purchasing just so that I can have my external HD, mouse, keyboard, and speakers plugged in all the time (the plugs tend to fall off my desk, and it's much easier to have them at an set location. -

Here are temps after 45-60 minutes of BF:BC2.
I am not sure if it is a setting or if I am just crazy, but for some reason the mouse seems "floaty". It just doesn't seem to have the best precision. I guess I will have to play with the settings in the game, as well as in Win7.
Anybody else feel the same? -
-
Hmmm..maybe i should re-apply the bios
-
-
-
Interesting.
Well, I ordered a replacement keyboard from Asus online on Sunday. For a couple days the order status never changed so I emailed them yesterday - no reply.
Surprise...Fed-Ex just delivered the new keyboard.
Keyboard lights still don't work though....guess I need to send it in. I am not happy about that because the system runs great otherwise and if they replace something I may end up with a lemon.
-
I just flashed my bios back to 205 and that didnt bring the back light back...so either my blackligting just stopped working out of the blue (hardware problem) OR bios 206 screwed it up even when downgrading the bios -
-
-
Well that's solved. My G73 is bricked. Tried to roll back BIOS now it won't power up at all.
Sweet. -
Not sure if I follow, but you bricked it by updating the BIOS? -
-
Or does it actually turn on?
There is an option to launch the "asus easy flash" within the bios setup if he can get it to boot that far...but it sounds like when he says bricked...that it wont power-up at all (nothing on the screen..no post).
-Scotty -
Isn't there a pinhole reset on the bottom of the laptop? Thought I read about that in the manual.
-
-
I think I've had it in my possession a little over 2 weeks. Worked great except the keyboard lights died.
I've built and owned so many machines for so many years this is the first that's ever bricked, even when wire wrapping my own circuits haha.
I already had the RMA all ready to go so I wasn't too concerned about trying the flash.
To the other replies:
Won't even power on.
Not even the power light goes on. Or any lights, like the battery indicator. Total brick!
Yes, tried pin-hole reset.
I'll dig around for a possible boot solution, but if I don't have it by 4 I'm going to Fed-Ex/Kinkos to ship it off.
Appreciate the suggestions, thanks! -
I used these to fix a Toshiba that I bricked. The only negative to them is that you need a usb floppy drive.
