Any chance Asus puts out a model out that doesn't have blue flames or bright orange on it? :D

I guess I should be looking at their N80/N50 series, but geez, they don't have a 256bit gpu...

I didn't mean return the unit. Just get the credit for the difference under their price protection policy.

Just bought the X1 from BB. It was 1170 after tax. I wanted to get the A1, but with the major price difference this seemed like a better choice. I am really happy with it so far and I like the screen more than i thought i would. It stays super cool and chomps through games like crazy considering the price.

That looks like a nice laptop, but keep in mind that with the X-1 you can output to higher resolutions with a external monitor hookup. For me everything gets too small on a laptop screen with very high resolutions. I have a older 20" monitor that supports 1600x1200 and the X1 had no problem with that resolution on that monitor. It seems the LCD panel itself is what limits the X1's output not the graphics chip. FYI I ran the free 3DMark 06 at 1280x1024 on a external monitor and below is the scores. The A2 should score the CPU around the 2550 mark at the maximum overclock setting and just a tad higher in the graphics scores, but not much.

    SM 2.0 3550
    SM 3.0 3203
    CPU MAX OVERCLOCKED 2.49GHZ 2237

I'll call again. The lady I spoke to on the phone said the price protection period was equal to the return period, which is 14 days on a computer.

    Thanks

$1099 + tax is absolutely mad. I was really tempted this morning when I opened the sales paper, but I decided against it.

Has anyone that has purchased this notebook experienced any frame rate issues? In WoW it was running about 50fps in Shat and soloing but in a raid encounter it was dropping to 5fps. Has anyone seen similar behavior in WoW or other games?

How good is the display of the bestbuy X1? (especially compared with other basic CCFL screens from manufacturers like HP, Dell etc.)? Can you tell me everything about brightness, colors, viewing angles? Is it any good?

@Randy: they usually extend it for people during Christmas for just that reason. At least, that was what I was told (and experienced) in previous years. I'd suspect they'll do it again this year, though.

That low-res keeps the price down and lets you play most games on maximum details. Anyway...

Can anyone confirm the quality of the display, please? Angles, colours, brightness.

The screen is just ok. I am comparing it to a G1. The viewing angles are not quite as good. Overall I think the screen looks a little bit washed out. My dad has a xps m1530 and the screens are pretty similar. His is not the upgraded LED screen, it is the older model.

Other than the screen this thing is awesome. It runs super cool and I can even keep it in my lap while gaming! It is quick and good looking. The only other bad thing I can think of is the battery life, but that is expected.

Because the screen is a lower resolution. There are less pixels that the GPU has to show on the screen so it has less work to do.

What is the big deal with the screen resoultion? I'm seriously considering this computer. Surely Asus wouldn't put a crappy LCD on such a nice computer would they? The only game I'll play is World of Warcraft.

What does everyone one mean by poor resolution screen. 1368 X 768 seems to be a nice resolution. My old computer was a 12?? x ???. It was a nice screen.

I looked at this machine yesterday and it has some darn nice features(for the price) and the resolution wasnt to bad . in the long run if your a gamer it will get you the best framerates/performance . The only gripe i had with it was the viewing angle made the screen look washed out until i tilted it back then the screen looked much better but overall still a nice machine for the $$.

@ The 1: I am not sure how to check the manufacturer. In the device manager it is listed as a generic pnp monitor. I wouldn't mind doing it if you explain how.

@ smcgil9899: It isn't that the resolution is terrible. However, most laptops of this caliber do have a higher resolution screen. 1680X1050 is imho the best res for a 15 incher. With that said, I just bought this laptop and the screen isn't too bad. I do miss the old screen a little bit, but I do not have to sit as close to this one and gaming is much smoother.

Hi! Just picked one up at bb. Finally decided after a year of Sager NP5793 and Gateway thoughts. The screen is actually pretty good. I compared to the other screens in the store and i couldnt see much of a difference. The specs tells me that i have the 9800 GT graphic card. Is it possible that i have that card in my nb?

NO NO that is weight including charger. lappy is just over 6 lbs. Asus site says
2.8kg. I have p-7811fx and love it. But as my first lappy I didnt know that 17" is too big and heavy for a lappy-IMO. EXCUSE ME..IM TALKING AT THE G50VT-X2
not the X1 (but weight is about same)...So Im looking to switch and this Asus seems like good choice and I prefer the brand. Gateway is crappier brand. Im not impressed with thier cust serv. Coming from building destops I like Asus and Gigabyte. I wish Gigabyte made gaming lappies! I am concerned about the underclocked 9800m GS though. You have to suspect that these are 'reject' 9800m GTS. they probable wont overclock nearly as well. http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html shows 9800m GS as 530 core clock, 800 mem, doenst give shader. 530 is only 70 less than GTS,and 800 is the same mem. but you have to wonder that when you OC it wont go as far on a % basis. I love how far this 7811 goes. I get to like 725/925/1675 EASILY.. Apparently you cant (bios)overclock cpu on 7811...I wonder if you can (bios OC)on this Asus. temps on my gateway cpu say it would have much room to OC cpu.EXCUSE ME..IM TALKING AT THE G50VT-X2 not the X1...X2 is way better.

Can you upgrade the CPU on this notebook? If so what's the best one than can fit in there?
Does it have a good enough cooling system?(fans + are the loud? to handle a new CPU?)
Sorry for all the noob questions but this laptop seems good enough and now cheap enough to buy and try to upgrade the components myself
Is the different resolution good on the screen?
One last question I can get my hands on a 9800M GTX really cheap from my buddy will this work on this laptop?
    Thanks

Yes you can upgrade the CPU on this notebook, but it would void the warranty. The best you could theoretically fit in there would be something along the lines of the X9000 (least that's what I remember reading). The cooling on this system has to be one of the best I've ever seen. The notebook is at all times quit and cool, even when overclocked and under stress. At first I wasn't too sure about the resolution, but upon some usesage it felt just fine, especially since you'll be able to handle demanding games fairly well at a lower native resolution with such a powerful notebook GPU in comparison to a higher resolution screen. If I were to compare it to a 16:10 ratio screen it would fit between 1280x800 and a 1440x900 screen which is more than sufficient for my needs. Looking inside the notebook it appears to have some kind of MXM slot, but can't confirm if it'll work. Though I don't see why you'd want to upgrade the GPU as I stated before, with such a GPU and native resolution you'll be able to handle tasks quite well.

    Regular price is $1249, sale price minus $250 = $999 :)
BestBuy models from Asus have different warranty terms because they are exclusive and not part of Asus' regular retail chain - warranty is 1 year :(. If you want the 2 year global warranty plus 12 month Accidental Damage Protection policy, you need to buy the -a1 etc version from an Asus reseller.
BestBuy usually runs sales on calendar weeks, although sometimes will extend things longer and this holiday season most retailers are trying anything they can to improve sales numbers. Still, I would expect that the sales price will expire this evening @ midnight, and the coach will turn back into a pumpkin :).

Yes, unfortunately it is over. I learned of this sale last night, and tried to jump on it, but I couldn't do it on time. (I live in Canada, and I was planning on going down to the states to pick one up)

Does anyone know when it'll be on sale again? I googled, and I found one guy saying that it typically goes on sale once a month. I doubt thats true though.

Was this the first time it has gone on sale? Sorry I don't feel like digging through all these pages to find out. I'm sure one of you guys know.

    Thanks

Yea.. I was furious when the Gateway went on sale in the states 'cause I bought it from the only shipment that shipped to Canada at the full price of 1350... Oh well, at least I got it early.

I'm still trying to get the Asus of ebay now.
