XP and 2000 use mostly the same drivers as I recall. What I would recommend is buy a new HD and install your W2000 on that and see if any driver problem might surface. I cannot think of any. Be sure to download the XP drivers first.
That way you can easily swap back the original HD with vista.
I had deleted the original vista once and had a lot of trouble reinstalling it with the recovery disks.

Ok, I finally have mine, but there's an odd problem. Most times I boot up the notebook, the desktop appears for a moment, and then seems to vanish. There's just an Asus wallpaper different from the one I set for the desktop, and the Vista task bar defaults to pop up (I can fix it, but every time I reset, I have to do it again).
Any ideas as to what causes this? -
is in quite office mode...you can change it with the buttom next to bluetooth, you can't see your original customization because is in quite office. change to other, power saving or other were you save your settings...
i hope this help you -
I saw this computer on clearance last night at Best Buy for 899.00 I am looking for a reliable laptop w/ long battery life and durability. It will be used for windows applications as well as movies and managing Itunes. Also web chat with the kids while I am traveling over seas. Is this computer a great deal at 899.00. My first choice is the Blue Label Toshiba but I will buy the Asus if its the right deal.

Thanks!

The Brown (Asus x83vm-x1) has nice components.
Best features: Wifi, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS, 4gig ram, Centrino® 2 8400 CPU
Worst features: Keyboard lettering and number and function key colors! No modem, No Bluetooth, No infra red, CD on left side of system, speakers low quality, graphics display quality. The worst problem is bad key visibility due to color blending!
Brown keys with beige, rust red and pale blue make visibility horrible except in very bright light settings. A red color blind person could not see the function key lettering.
64 Bit Vista is problematic in not being friendly to most free firewalls and various non 64bit software programs.
STUDENTS: Auto click should to be disabled quickly before taking any tests! Accidental clicks will create failures. -
I just purchased this laptop -- the best part was the price was down to $794 at my Best Buy (though on-line still has it at the $1049)... I hope I grow to like it... its specs are fantastic... the only issue I have with it is there is no (hardware) way to turn the touchpad off that I see.
-
I am having an issue with using the LiveCD of Ubuntu 8.10... it loads, but then it locks up and doesn't seem to run properly... any ideas? It is almost like it is having issues reading from the CD... I have burned a fresh copy and it still has the same issue.

Bought this @ bb for $899.99 but decide to return and now looking at G50VT-A1 instead. 1200x800 was too low for me.
-
Just to remind those looking at this laptop, spend a little bit more money for a much better model and MUCH bette warranty (Asus Warranty > Best Buy Warranty)
ASUS N80Vn-GP011C 14.1" 2.4GHz/4GB/320GB/DVD±RW Laptop
NVIDIA GeForce 9650M GT 1GB (1024MB) DirectX 10 Support
$200 rebate, LED display better graphics card, faster CPU... this one pwns the BB one!
came out to $959 with a free 1 year accidental damage warranty as well. -

Alright - got Dual boot setup properly. Wanted to do a quick post on how to accomplish this.
1) Go to ASUS website and download latest BIOS for motherboard - 207 at the time of writing and install this and follow reboot recommendations - link
2) Go to Microsoft.com and download latest SP3 - link
3) Slip stream SP3 into a new windows XP CD - follow link or here Follow those directions and make sure you create a bootable cd.
4) You want to setup a seperate partition for XP to reside. Use these directions as they work to a T - link
5) With Vista still loaded, go grab your drivers and write down names of all your devices you have installed.
6) After getting drivers and making CD, reboot and enter the BIOS (F2, F8 or F10 gets you there). Scroll until you find IDE configuration. Change the setting to Compatiable to install Windows XP. You might also have to select a new boot order and move the CD/DVD to position one in the boot order to boot to a cd. Save setttings, put newly created XP cd in drive and reboot.
7) Install XP like normal...be sure to select the newly created partition when installing XP.
8) After installation is complete, you'll want to follow the last link I sent you on how to setup and get Vista and XP booting together. A super easy and free tool called FreeBCD is what I used and it worked flawlessly.
9) Lastly, anytime you boot to XP, you'll have to change the setting in your BIOS to the "compatiable mode" and anytime you boot to Vista you'll want to change it to "enhanced". Without doing this, you'll get a blue screen stop message everytime.
Hope this helps....took me nearly a day to get it figured out! -
Hey guys,
Bought this laptop last week and I love it. Really Fast and surprisingly decent looking.
1 problem though: The sound is really low. I've got everything at top volume and it's too low to hear a movie when it's sitting on my lap. Has anyone else ran into this situation? Any ideas?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks -

did anyone try updating the video card driver for this laptop?
if you did, which one did you go with? -

$795 in store at your local Best Buy.

I just purchased this laptop from BB and also got the Vista Ultimate upgrade for 1/2 price (which I used to upgrade my desktop).
I like this laptop, but my score is only 4.8 with memory scoring the 4.8, video scored 5.3. Might have to adjust the power settings and retry the test.
Problems I found:
The screen has bad color rendition, the blues are way too bright and the green is an unnatural color. I used the nvidia software to adjust the blue gamma and brightness so that it renders decent grays across the brightness range but you can see on a gray chart how dark grays are too green while light grays are too blue. This is surprising since I own an ASUS desktop monitor that has nearly perfect color rendering.
The speakers might be ok for a laptop but they are still pretty bad.
I didn't need a top of the line video card, just one with decent speed, and the 9600M GS is perfect. I've tried Dark Age of Camelot (older MMO), Warhammer Online, Civ 4 and Zoo Tycoon 2, all at the highest video settings with 2x anti-aliasing turned on. All run extremely well.
In my opinion for $795 this thing is a steal if you're looking for a smaller laptop with good video performance. The laptop color and pattern on it is ... well ... unique. I like to think it's always on sale because it's so ugl.... unique looking.
I wanted to add a comment about most reviews. CNET says this:
The Bad
Stiff mouse buttons are annoying and loud; no multimedia shortcut keys; no Bluetooth despite Bluetooth button.
I tap, though usually I have a mouse plugged in. Does anyone even use these buttons on a regular basis? The brightness and volume buttons are all via the func+button combination, which works fine for me. I'f I'm working in a dark room I generally use the on screen controls anyway. -
Is the screen LED or not? I haven't seen any definitive answers...
-
I wish ASUS would update their web page to include this model. -
I believe the screen is LED. If you own it, go to device manager and try to get the part number and google it...
-
-
-
CNET's review stated that it's a LED screen.
-
-
If it is indeed LED I love it. It's sharp and crystal clear. But then, I've used it to replace an old Dell 8600 Inspiron that I didn't realize how dim it had gotten!
-
Bluetooth: Anyone installed an internal Bluetooth card in theirs? That's one thing I really wanted, especially to use with my future BlackBerry! Or, are there better Bluetooth options?
-
So if i wanted to optimize this laptop for best performance/graphics and multi-tasking, what should i do? I have heard a lot about installing XP-pro so i was thinking of doing that, but some are saying that Asus does not support any of their new models with XP drivers and such? Anyways, besides that, what else is there to do? This is basically a desktop away from my desktop, to type papers, play games (mostly WoW) IM on the go etc etc...
-
If you are going to get a USB Bluetooth Adapter. Make sure it is 64 Bit compatible.

I can confirm the RAM in my X83Vm-X1 is a set of Superior Qimonda HYS64T256020EDL-2.5C2 PC2-6400 2GB DDR2 SODIMM DDR2-800. I pulled off the cover and did a search. I'm thinking "A system Bus of 1066MHz with PC2 5300 @667MHz" Why? I see the new X83Vm-X2 has a slower CPU and has the RAM listed as PC2-6400. Best Buy wasn't the only site that posted the inaccuracy with the X1 RAM
-
Sure the non Best Buy ASUS laptops have all the niceties. The N80Vn-X5 for example is the same price as the X83Vm-X1 (at list) but has much more. We (you and me) shopped at Best Buy and this is what we got. I was in the market for a Nice 14" laptop. I did much research and chose this one like we all did. I feel I got what I paid for "A good deal" (< $800 clearance from Best Buy). I for one will consider a ASUS main line laptop as a next upgrade.
-
I've been very happy with mine! ASUS was a good choice in my book!
-
I also would prefer to know if there is an internal Bluetooth which we can purchase/insert ourselves.
What about the maximum memory and types?
Thanks.

Can this system handle any of the newer games out today? like F.E.A.R. 2,Left 4 Dead, DeadSpace,Fallout 3?
Or any other newer games out there? -

I guess what I am hoping is that I could install a card that will allow me to use FN + F2 to enable/disable bluetooth/wireless (whereas right now, mine only enables/disables wireless) and have the indicator for bluetooth on the lower left of the notebook work accordingly. From what I understand, our model is based on the N80VM?
I found this information on Bluetooth 2.0 and Wireless B/G. If we used this card, we'd lose the Wireless A/N (assuming you have the Intel 5100 as I do).

You can overclock with Asus Direct Console but I don't notice any difference in game play. -
Anyone knows how to extend the battery's duration? An extra 30 minutes would be great...
-
Have a look at my Tips and Tricks, "How to save power with..."
Keep your wireless and/or bluetooth turned off if you don't use them. Keep the screen at a lower brightness. Don't use the optical drive as much as possible.
Other than that, there is not much that you can do to significantly affect battery life. -
anyone tried putting win7 on this laptop yet?
-
Installation worked *really* well, except I thought there was a hang at the end, but it just needed more time to finish installing. I had sound right and wifi right off the bat, and apparently there were drivers from nVidia and ASUS ready via Windows Update (for the 9600m GS card and the blue function keys). Everything works pretty well, although sometimes some programs can be a little wonkey. It's beta, after all. As far as software is concerned, I tested Firefox 3, AVG free and Perfect World International. I'd like to eventually try Oblivion (and mods), along with Fallout 3, Guild Wars, DOSBOX and FRAPS. -
also, where can i find the info on what type of hard drive goes in here? -
I have the exact same build you do, 7000. Of course, I installed this a few days ago and only had the 32 bit version. Windows Update had released the drivers earlier this month, so if you still have the installation they may be waiting for you. If not - the RC comes out for public download May 5th.
As far as the type of drive this notebook takes, it uses a 2.5 inch SATA (Serial ATA) drive. -
Hello,
Can you use "net_graph 3" in game and post FPS data for L4D/COD4, and any other games you may have?
On the X83vm-x2, if you have that one.
Thanks

Sorry to revive and old thread, but I looked and couldn't find the answer. I saw that someone else asked it earlier in the forum but recieved no answer. I was wondering about the 9600m GS GPU, is it GDDR2 or GDDR3? Most of the websites with the computers specs show it as GDDR3.
Thank you, -
