one more thing, I had 202 bios, but I felt like the sshd was not working, but after updating the bios, the start up time is much improved, by about 15 seconds, and every thing is snappier. funny thing is 203 update claims to only fx problems for the 530 ssds, which i am not using

I am going to buy a UX32LN. However, in Scandinavia there seems to be LOADS of different configurations.

I finally found one I wanted, with I7 4510U cpu, 8gigs of ram, 256GB ssd etc, but this model has no 802.11 AC wifi.......Im so bummed out about this. I want my laptop to be future proof.

And another thing, various sites quote the battery to be 6 cell 50w, while others claim 3 cell 50, and even some claiming 3 cell 23WHR.

Does any model actually have 6 cell battery, or is it correct to assume that all UX32LN's have 3 cell 50whrs?

How important is the AC wifi anyway?

It's pretty easy to upgrade the wireless card yourself to AC.

Will the function keys to enable/disable the Wifi/bluetooth still work though?

And also, is there a difference in battery time on the i7 4500U and the 4510U?

I know theres a 200mhz difference in clock speed, but they have the same TDP.

The function key should still work.
It's going to be hard to tell the difference but technically the 4510U will drain more power than 4500U due to higher frequency.
TDP is just a reference number for power consumption.

Intel did say the Haswell refresh were binned higher due to extra time to optimize the 22nm, so the power consumption shouldn't increase much.

Even if it does, a higher clocked CPU will hit idle faster than the slower one unless if you're doing something intensive over time, such as video editing or gaming. The semiconductor industry uses the "Race to Idle" design philosophy.

Thats true. Im waiting for the UX32LN-R4102H to come in stock in Norway. Its listed as being confirmed to be in stock 21.August.

There are multiple new configurations of the UX32LN coming to Norway/Sweden in August.

    R4102H - I7 4510U, 8gb RAM, 256GB SSD, FHD IPS display
    R4100H - I5 4210U, 6gb RAM, 128GB SSD, FHD IPS display
    R4086H - I7 4510U, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, FHD IPS display
    R4076H - I7 4510U, 8gb RAM, 500GB SSHD, FHD IPS display, 802.11AC Wifi

I also think none of them bundles with the adapters, although the two last ones is listed as being shipped with a sleeve. The 2 first is not. I dont know if the adapters are still included though, but probably not.

I think these models are being released in Scandinavia instead of the UX303LA, and possibly some other configurations of the UX303LN. The only model I have seen of the UX303LN is the QHD+ touch model, which otherwise is identical in specs to the UX32LN-R4102H.

The UX301LA is also being released in a new configuration here, the UX301LA-DE083H, with the i7 4510U CPU, otherwise identical to some of the cheaper configurations of the UX301LA (128gb x 2, Intel 4400 gfx, FHD display etc)

One of the great things about the UX32LN, in my opinion at least, is the fact that it uses a standard 2.5" HDD. These things couldn't be any easier to change. If you must have the AC WiFi, just get the last config and change it to an SSD. However I have heard from dealers here that that would void your warranty. You should check with Asus in Scandinavia if that's true.

Doesn't matter for us in Norway, we have 5 year right to get if fixed by law (2 year for battery), which is not affected by changing HDD/Memory/wifi. So doesn't matter if we break the asus warranty, we have the right to get it fixed for free by law. :)

Okay, to anyone who is like me and doesn't like the advertising stickers on the laptop; I removed them using a toothpick, hair dryer and some scotch tape. I started out by heating the sticker with the hair dryer, then used the toothpick to get underneath one of the edges and finally pulled it off. Any remaining glue residue I removed with the scotch tape. The HDMI, intel and nvidia stickers were quite easy to remove while the small energy star sticker was more difficult. The windows 8.1 sticker on the back was pretty easy to remove, but left quite a lot of glue residue (I didn't heat it with the hair dryer) which I just removed with the tape. Anyway it left a perfectly clean result, no marks whatsoever. ;)

So how many of you are doing this? Just been reading through the Yoga 2 Pro thread and it seems everyone is replacing the wifi card. But to get better speeds it would require your router to be AC as well right?

Oh man 5 years, you lucky sobs. Our warranty is only 2 years. :D

WE have very good laws for protecting the consumers yes.

It comes at a price though, we pay a lot of taxes to the state for living here. Like 30-35% of what we earn in general tax to the state, tax for owning a car. 25% VAT on everything we buy (14% VAT for food). So in reality the state takes back roughly 60% of what we earn in taxes :p

In the US, we have problems with retailers selling warranties and then not honoring it because the consumer did not read paragraph A44 on page 256 of the warranty policy, stating that the retailer will not cover broken WiFi chips.

On a side note, Olympus, Fujifilm, and other companies sell waterproof cameras.

The only issue is that their warranties DO NOT COVER WATER DAMAGES. And I did find a phrase in Olympus's warranty policy stating that waterproof cameras should not be used underwater.

Look up customer reviews for waterproof cameras (such as on US amazon), there will be many people complaining about the warranty not covering water damages.

Yeah. There aren't even any cables, just a port. You undo a few screws, unplug the old hard disc, plug in the new one, place the screws back and you're done.

However you will have to install windows. A few pages back someone reported success recovering from external recovery media created using Asus Backtracker. Backtracker didn't come with my computer but you can download it from Asus.

On a separate note, I think I may know why we all seem to be getting the battery drain issue. Li-ion batteries are normally rated at 3.7V average and charge to 4.2V when full. AFAIK battery meters measure battery capacity by battery voltage. However, the Asus battery pack is rated at 11.31V, which works out to 3.77V average per cell. This corresponds to a charged voltage of 4.3 or 4.35V, which is becoming more common nowadays. If battery bar still considers full charge as 4.2V, it will calculate the power capacity as such.

Dividing 50.1 Wh by 4.35V will give about 11.5Ah capacity. Multiplying the current capacity by the voltage again will give about 48 Wh, or about 5% "battery wear". Make sense to any of you?

Thats great. Ordered laptop yesterday together with 250gb 840 EVO ssd.

I havent used Windows on any of my computers in over 11years, so thats just great, as I dont have to zero-fill the whole drive before installing Linux. But I do think Im gonna install Windows on the SSHD so I can verify everything works.

Part of the reason Im buying this laptop, is that my girlfriends UX32VD has flawless Linux support, so Im hoping this one will have too.

My last laptop (UX51VZ-XB71) werent too great with Linux. High power-consumption, poor hotkey support and horrible scaling problems with the 2800x1620 resolution it had.

Hey guys, just got my UX32LN-4054H. Changed the SSHD to Samsung 840 EVO SSD.

Overall, the machine flies with its performance. FHD screen is absolutely gorgeous to look at. Keyboard is very good, with great tactile feedback (personally).

The one problem I have is that the trackpad is so ... stiff, should I say? I'm not talking about clicking the trackpad -- that's just fine. But trying to move my finger on the trackpad results in a not-so-smooth motion. It results in a staggered motion, and the finger occasionally "squeaks" against the touchpad as if it has too much friction. And after using it, it feels like all the oil from the skin of my fingers has evaporated.

Does anyone else have this kind of experience using the trackpad?

Congratulations man, great to hear your mostly satisfied with it. Im still waiting for mine. The Norwegian postal service is not the fastest....

Im writing this from a UX32VD, and it's touchpad too is quite non-smooth, hard to move fast. Dont know if they're the same or not..

No, it's not a software problem... it's the physical feeling that is wrong. The whole touchpad feels like I'm moving my finger against a raw, rough piece of glass. I know that trackpads are actually made out of glass, but the zenbook feels like it has very high friction compared to other trackpads I've used on other notebooks.

Anyone else having trouble with the laptop waking itself up when in sleep mode? Happens to mine every few hours. Event viewer states the wake source as "Power Button". I can't find any "Wake on Lan" option in the bios to disable. Anyone got some suggestions?

No yeah same here. Not gladly satisfied by the feeling with the touchpad, the sensation is not fluid, fingers are like "go, mini stop, go, go, ministop" for example if you are moving slowly to the back of the page ...

I suggest buying the 128Gb version and replacing the SSD with Crucial MX100/Samsung 840 EVO, will most likely be cheaper, and you get an faster SSD than the 256Gb kingston that asus usually use.

I have the Crucial MX100 in mine.

I bought the UX32LN-R4076H with 500GB SSHD, and ordered a Samsung 840 Evo 256GB ssd with it. Only model with AC wifi and the updated processors (4510U instead of 4500U).

I also wanted the R4102H, but seeing as it doesnt have AC wifi and also wont be available until later this month. There is also a bigger chance that it includes the adapters/sleeve aswell, as the R4102H specifications mentions nothing about a included sleeve or adapters, but the R4076 mentions a included sleeve aswell.

OK, I think I got it, it seems to be a buggy feature. If you go to the advanced power settings for your current power plan, and then expand the "Sleep" category, there's the "Hibernate after" option which by default is 180 min. So basically the laptop wakes itself after 180 min in an attempt to hibernate. The problem is that for some reason it doesn't work. Instead of hibernating, the laptop goes to sleep again after 15 min (the default "Put laptop to sleep" time in the balanced power plan is 15 min). And this repeats over and over. So you get a cycle of 180 min sleep, wake up for 15 min, go back to sleep for another 180 min, wake up again for 15 min etc etc etc. My event log from yesterday, where I left the laptop "sleeping" the whole day, confirms this cycle of waking and sleeping.

So if anyone's got a solution, or a different experience, please post. I would of course love to use hibernate as it's got lower power usage, but with the current buggy implementation I see no other option than to disable hibernation in the power settings.

Will it hibernate if you adjust the power settings, such as changing the time of when it occurs, or making the laptop going straight into hibernate?

Can you hibernate the laptop manually.

Normally I wouldn't hibernate a laptop with an SSD unless if I don't plan on using it for a few days.

Hibernating the laptop manually works. I also tried changing the hibernation time to a few minutes and putting the laptop to sleep. After a few minutes it wakes up and goes into hibernation successfully. I don't know why it didn't work previously. Could it be that I was running some software which prevented the laptop from going into hibernation?

Also, why wouldn't you put an SSD laptop into hibernation?

Don't you loose your warranty? I meen, it's not that I am going to drop it on the ground, but it's still nice to keep the warranty if you can, right? Is the default SSD that bad? I guess having AC wifi and the sleeve + adapters is something though...

Typically manufacturers allow you to change RAM or HDD.

Doing motherboard modification or flashing a modded BIOS is frowned upon though.

Sometimes there will be stickers on the cooling assembly so if you remove it, the warranty is broken.

Opening up the body of most machines voids the warranty, user accessible compartments of course do not.

It does? Most laptops I've came across only put the "Warranty voided if seal is broken" stickers on the cooling assembly's screws.

Yes you could. I would however keep the original drive in case you need the warranty later on. Then you can just swap back. Then you would also dont have to reinstall the OS when you get it back from repair, because there seems to be a "standard" procedure to do a factory reset at the service center to assure the problems are not software related.

But really, I have been a loyal Asus customer for the past 5 years, and none of my laptops have ever had any hardware issues whatsoever, so Im not actually worried about the warranty at all. But if you are so unlucky to actually get a faulty product, I dont think asus would care if you had replaced the harddisk to be honest.

Ok, you all convinced me. I will be buying the SSHD version and change to SSD manually. Do I just follow the guide made earlier in the post? The one made by Picazsoo. And would I need to buy a new Windows 8, or was the whole point of the guide to use the Windows 8 copy which comes with the PC?

Hello, any other troubles with Jack 3,5mm and no function as described above? I have also the same troubles, after insert the headphones, it doesnt work, music still sorrounding from speakers. It should be troubles with Conexant audio driver, because after uninstall it is OK. But without this driver I cannot set up audio to better quality and higher loud. Thanks for reply… Zdenek

Im not a Windows user, but I think you could just download a Windows 8 (or 8.1) iso off the net, and use the serial/license which is provided with your computer, but dont quote me on that. Someone else may be able to verify?

If it is like Zenbook UX32VD, it asks you for Intel USB 3.0 drivers...
It's kinda tricky - you cannot include them on your CD/DVD, because CD/DVD requires USB driver to be recognized. You have to have partition on your drive, which contains these drivers.

You don't need to buy a new Windows 8. Just follow Picazsoo's guide, but if you want to do a UEFI install, then you have to do two of the steps differently as I explained in my later post. When you're finished with the guide, Windows 8 should activate itself as it detects the Windows key from the bios.

Checked Laptopsdirect, eBay, Amazon, and can't find it anywhere.

I have now gotten my UX32LN-R4076H (i7 4510U, 8gb ram, ac wifi) and can confirm that it does indeed come with a sleeve and adapters for vga and Ethernet. Looking great so far! :)

Now lets pop the hood and replace that harddisk with an SSD!
