I don't think its accurate. It should be at least, if not much greater than, 4 hours. UMPCs like the Samsung Q1p (with 7" touchscreen and the 1GHz PenM, 1GB memory, and 60GB hard disk) get ~2.5hrs from the 2 cell battery and 5-5.5 hours from the 4 cell, so this should get even more than that, with its smaller SSD and slower processor. Even the 10" with a larger screen should get close to that much.

i am a bit surprised, the 10" version appears to use a completely different chassis!

when i saw the 701 i immediately thought; hmm, that's ace, just needs a bigger screen to fill up the black borders, and i figured that the 8.9" screen capable of 1024x600 would do the job perfectly.

so when news hit about the 10" version i was pleased, if a little surprised that they could get such a big screen into a small chassis.

but now we see that it is a completely different chassis..................

I wouldn't be all bad, the extra space means that the keyboard's keys will be equally spread and nice to type on. I find typing on the Sony TX a bit difficult (due to the small spacing).

I like the 7" design a lot better. Its design of the hinge looks better. I do think the 10" is ugly. This is personal taste only. Imperfection on the 7" is the thick black border.

agreed, that's why i'd like them to put an 8.9" screen in the 7" chassis, it would get rid of the only crap bit; black border wasted space.

Exactly, the 10", EEE 1001 uses a whole different uglier chassis. The white 7" 701 looks very sleek, simple and sexy. :)

But geesh Asus, way to screw it up by putting in such a small screen when where is room for more. Perhaps they did it to keep it cheap?

Please, I want it to come out now, ASAP! I would love to see all the projects and mods for it once it comes out.

It looks like the 701 and 1001 have the exact same specs right? I'm surprised Asus didn't make the 1001 just a bigger version than the 701. The 1001 is ugly, but I may still get it.

Some interesting stuff over at http://www.eeeuser.com/

Seems like the $199 price tag isn't accurate... for some countries, at least. :\

Well if there is any place that you will be able to get it for $199, it should be Taiwan. Asus notebooks here on average are about 10-20% less than in the US. For example, I can get the G1s for $1500-1600 and the Asus W3j for $1200-1300 depending on the specs. It should also come out first here. Most notebooks make it to the markets a month before they hit the US markets. Hopefully I'll be one of the first to get my hands on it! :D

There is press release in the asus Portuguese website... You can try using google translate. Check the bottom of the page. The translation is crap but you can see the prices for the two versions.

What i got from google tranlation:
"the PC Eee will have to arrive at the market with an extremely competitive price and that it will go up to around 299€ for the units of 7” and 499€ for the versions of 10”."

That is a important part, does it mean the max out price at 299 for 7" and 499euros for the 10 or does it mean it starts at 299euros and such. Need someone that reads proper portuguese.

I'm Portuguese. In fact the "up to" expression in Portuguese is not up to, its straight forward translation would be : approximately, around, more or less. The "up to" expression leaves the idea that could be far less. The portuguese expression narrows the range. Normally, when companies use this expression it means that the price quoted will probably be the final price. I wouldn't count for the price to be less than €250 and €450 for the 7'' and 10'' models, respectively.

Could be, as there is no information about to which models the prices refer to. However, I believe this press release is just a translation from the one posted on the Asus global site. In the original press release the prices mentioned were $199 and $299, which we assume refer to the basic models. In this press release, the prices were updated , I assume they are refering to the same models.

Well, it seems that in Spain the price will be similar to the one in Portugal ( Asus ES press release and translation). I can't find any news regarding the eee on the FR and DE sites. The UK site has the same press release as the US site, with prices stated in $.

well you'll find that the early version of linux wont be tweaked to provide the best possible battery life. I know that there are a fair few things you can do to reduce the battery life, like reducing the number of times an application writes to the HDD, or the power management profile used on the WiFi card. After applying all the tweaks (which they hopefully do) then they could get that battery life right up there. Not to mention under clocking the CPU... that would yield major gains.

Wait, what's the resolution on the 7" screen? I fear it may be too small to view many web pages comfortably. (So many sites are going for fixed with 1024px designs these days.)

Correct, and officially the Eee PC only supports XP and Linux, and the former only providing that you buy the one with enough space. You can be pretty much assured that there won't be drivers for other operating systems, and being a specialized device, I doubt you could configure it to run Vista.

MS says that Vista needs 15GB and (22GB if you install Bitlocker) to install, but takes up less space after installation.

I know it takes up less space, but the req is 15gb (I guess I was mistaken with the 20gb). Even if you get the 16GB ssd with this, it would be cutting the req awfully close.

Yeah, I don't think anyone'll be running vista on the EEE, other than maybe proof of concept. Even the 512MB RAM and 900MHz CPU would be just scraping in over Microsoft's hardware requirements.
