Yea :( This makes me wanna cry, because that Lenovo screen is only sRBG. You either get brightness or crap color. They should know that these are also the best content creation laptops and give us an option with a decent screen. I can only dream of getting that MSI Creator screen on a gaming laptop like the 2021 Lenovo Legion 7. Mini-LED 100% DCI-P3, 4k 120hz and 1100nits WTF need 2 pairs of sunglasses.

Peak 1% window brightness most likely, full window will be lower, maybe 600-800 nits max. Still outstanding nevertheless.

    It's only 4k60 iirc, not 4k 120hz. That would a dream.

Based on notebookcheck it seems average full window brightness is 950 nits for the MSI Creator 17 they tested.

That looks correct, but correct me if im wrong. Hmm.. but could have sworn they were advertising it as DCI-P3. Maybe that's with HDR on?
I dont really know much about this, why do we have 2 screen modes now, HDR on and off. Seems confusing and even harder to match color between everything.

Edit: ah yea, they had HDR turned off, which would have raised the brightness and color. Guess the original drivers they had werent ready for it or something.

What temps do you get maximum mainly in games? I have the g533qs and would want to see if temps get a lot higher with this and if there is a significant increase in gaming performance. Thank you

I am starting to get really p1ssed off at Asus. I have bought 2x g733qs laptops with 3080 and 300 hz screen and both had 1 dead or stuck pixel! First one had black pixel with white background, second one had red pixel with black background. It is insane even for one $3350 laptop (that's the price here) to have an old, well known issue like this, but both ?! I will try 1 more if the third one also has pixel issue, then I give up on ASUS...insane that I have to hassle with an issue like this at this price point.

Reminds me of my experience buying an Asus VG27AQ.

I bought it at a local store and 5 out of 7 monitors they tested had 1-3 dead/bright pixels and another had dust under the screen

Sent one already back, second one waiting for pickup.
At this price point even 1 bad pixel is unacceptable. Expesially that I have 2 budget laptops with perfectly working screens, so accepting a premium one with pixel issues would be stupid.

How are you getting this laptop? In the US at least it's not available till July now.

edit: I was gonna get it for a present so it needs to come with the config I want so I was gonna go with XOTIC PC, with the 2k screen, 64gb ram, 2tb seagate firecuda 520 4th gen nvme, 1tb samsung 980 evo pro 4th gen (cache drive).

Its loud as hell. Not as bad as in the GT73VR, however the max fan in the X170Sm-G is more tolerable in my opinion.

Which fan profile are you referring to?

Anyway it is really strange that I'm getting very conflicting opinions about this, some say it's louder while reviews and other guys say it's quieter than most of other gaming laptops like both GE66 / GE76 and old Scar 15/17.

Quick question... does the 2021 ROG Strix Scar 17 and 2021 ROG Strix G17 have card slots that fully support PCIe NVMe Gen 4 M.2 SSDs? I'm in market for one of these. Just waiting for them to be available in the US.

Right now both amd and intel based laptop don't have PCIe 4.0, just 3.0. The first laptops to have PCIe 4 lanes will be the ones coming with intel tiger lake h during this year.

Thanks for your prompt reply. In other words, there isn't any performance or functionality advantage in installing a PCIe 4.0 SSDs vs a PCIe 3.0 on these laptops. Right? It will just cost me more money for a Gen 4 which will give me no additional benefits.

Exactly, you could plug in a pcie 4 ssd of course if you want, but it would still be used as a pcie 3 one with pcie 3 limits.

If you want pcie 4 I'd suggest you wait for intel 11gen tiger lake laptops, which should come this summer, at least based on news. They might also come with other things like usb 4 and thunderbolt 4, hopefully.

    This is from XOTICPC:

The ROG Strix Scar models we sell with the 5000 series Ryzen processors and 30 series GPUs do support gen 4 PCIe and NVMe drives at their full speed.
The laptops we sell with 11th gen Intel chips also support full gen 4 speeds.

Let me know if you have any further questions or if there's anything else I can help you with.

    Best,
    Trevor H.

So yes, they do support gen 4.

I'd really wish that was true, but unfortunately I think they're mistaking or maybe confusing it with the just theoretical support, cause Ryzen 5000h based motherboards only have 8 PCIe 3 lanes, due also to power limitations.

damn.... I really don't want to go intel. I like AMD way better and I feel like it would even be better to have the 5900hx instead of a desktop replacement laptop running an intel i9 11K. But for a content creator like me, the 4th gen NVMe speeds are very important. But the DCI-P3 screen is also very important. I don't know what to do.

If you mean the "2x PCI x4 slots", that just means two PCIe 3.0 slots with x4 lanes, which in total make x8 as I said earlier.

Unfortunately, storage slots on the Strix G/Scar 2021 being PCIe 3 is also stated on the technical info on official Asus product pages.

I encountered few bugs on my unit. Can someone with laptop check if you have them too? I want to know if it is unit problem, or just software issues.

    1) GPU locks in idle state after hibernation / shut down with fast startup

    Steps to reproduce:
    • Enable Fast Startup (enabled by default) if it is disabled (Control Panel -> Hardware and sound -> Power options -> Choose what the power button do). Click on "Change settings that are currently unavailable" and enable "Turn on fast startup", apply settings. Or enable hibernation on same page and use it instead of shut down.
    • Switch to "Perfomance" or "Turbo" mode
    • Shut down laptop
    • Turn it on
    • Without changing perfomance mode run any GPU Heavy game. I tried it with Control and Horizon.
    • FPS will be terrible. If MSI Afterburent is installed, and OSD is configured to show GPU Clock and TDP it should be 500 MHZ and 50 Watts or something close instead of normal 1600 Mhz - 115/130 Watts. In GPU-z you can check Perfcap sensor, it will show that perfomance is locked by idle state.
    • To return clocks and power to normal just switch to "Silent" mode and back

    2) Check Windows "Event Log -> Windows Log -> Application" and see if you have "RefreshRateService" crashing. Happens almost on every startup for me after i allowed Windows to install updates.

    3) Check if you have Vulkan support, via GPU-z or in any supporting game (tried with Hades, but it should not matter). 3080 should have Vulkan support, but for some reason there is none on my laptop.

Tried factory reset, all problems persisted (at least on current versions of software, I installed all Windows, MyAsus and Armory Crate updates after reset). Does not really seem like a unit problem though, more like drivers issue, except vulkan, maybe they just removed support from card used in this laptop.

Your video card is a 3080 Mobile, which in fact is just a custom version of a desktop RTX 3070 but with 16GB of RAM.

I ended up getting the scar 17 2k, because I do some creative stuff too, I got it from gentechpc. Got it with the minimum ram but ordred 64gb of 3200mhz c16 crucal balistix, 2TB Seagate Firecuda 520 4th gen nvme (for the endurance). And a 1TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus (cache drive). Still stock vbios but ill run a time spy and update.

One reason I went with them, their warehouse is only 30 min from me. They offered Free
1::Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut on CPU/ Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut GPU
2::Free 30 Day No Dead Pixel Warranty
3::Fujipoly Ultra Extreme Thermal Pads on Ram
4::Free Windows 10 Pro (not everyone does this).

Edit: Here is my test. It's in turbo mode, I didn't adjust anything else because, frankly, I'm new to the game and don't know how to yet. I also wasn't hooked up to an external monitor. If you have any tips on how to squeeze the best performance let me know. (BTW, the fans on this computer are quiet.)

Flashing the vbios to the msi 155w bumped me up from 11300 to 12400 and only saw about a 4c increase in gpu temp. Stock thermal paste.

How did you get 11300 on stock, I only got 10800, and that’s with super fast ram and the fastest ssd’s I can put in there? Are you using an external monitor? I’m not sure what I can do before flashing vbios

Hey guys, while I am interested in flashing the vbios, my comp only pulled 10800 on timespy for some reason, but it easily handles cyberpunk at max everything very smoothly so far, and the rest of my games no issues, and the fans are very quiet on this machine vs other laptops I’ve seen. I haven’t tested it for a long session yet, so I’m unsure of temperatures. What are the settings I should pay attention to, to maximize performance for gaming, and which for rendering video in Premiere/AE/Resolve?

Is there a safe vbios flash? I only have the 240 watt brick, but some people said theirs was capable of handling more than 240, it does get quite hot though already. I can’t afford a new machine, so should I just suck it up for now and 3 years down the road, reflash the vbios when stuff is more advanced and I need more speed and the warranty is out?

EDIT: I don't know why I didn't check earlier, my ram is running at 2667 instead of 3200. Crucal does recommend this ram for this computer, how do I fix this so it starts running at 3200. That's probably why my score is so low.

Hi Accar I looked this up and Crucial ballistix runs at 3200 only if XMP is enabled manually in the bios. However, XMP is an Intel only thing and this laptop has AMD Ryzen CPU and mobo so I'm not sure if it will work in the mobile form. If we were talking desktops this probably wouldn't be an issue.

No need for a beefier power supply. The laptop never hits the 240w even with my gpu flashed to the 155w. I saw peaks around 260 at the wall so 260x.9=234 and that's being very generous. No way its 90% efficient.

Ugh, great. I really can't afford the new 11th gen I9 CPU laptops with Rtx3080 and Rtx3070 seems underpowered. Is it really that much difference between gen 3 and 4 Pcie? I want to use this Asus laptop both for gaming and creating

Hummm ... PCIe 3 vs 4 makes close to no difference (1-2% at most)
As for 3070 being "Underpowered" it's not. 3070 Mobile can get 32K Graphic score in Firestrike which is better than a 3060ti (Desktop)
3080 mobile get 36K graphic score in Firestrike which is a little bit better than a 3070 (Desktop)

The difference is not significative specially on a full 140W 3070 vs 3080.
The big difference is in the VRAM (8GB vs 16GB)

Don't get me wrong, the 3080 is better (10-15%) but is it 600$ USD better? I guess it depends on your budget but to me, absolutely NOT!
The big jump this year is between 3060 and 3070.

The reason I'm harping so much on CPU and GPU is cause I want to use rendering programs like cinema 4d and z brush and octane, and those are very heavily reliant on both
