There is this menu Desktop in the nVidia Control Panel where you can select Display GPU Activity Icon in the Notification Area. This little icon will show you when nVidia GPU is in use.

    10x man :) i really appreciate your help :)

Oh and is there a way to use the Express Gate Key for something else (for example restart, log off, hibernate, etc.) if you don't have asus express gate installed?

I had a problem with my U35 not going to sleep when Power4Gear was set to Quiet Office. After updating all the drivers and searching the web for insomniac Windows 7 solutions I finally found the fix.

I needed to turn off presentation mode in Power4Gear for the Quiet Office profile. This did the trick. Presentation mode must have prevented the computer from going to sleep when unattended for the set time.

Hope this might help someone, it was driving me nuts.

You rock! Same issue here but never took the time to look into it. Makes 'sense' that presentation mode would keep it from sleeping so your computer sleep during a presentation... but I had never heard of that before and didn't make the connection. Thanks!

Hey folks, just downloaded the latest touchpad driver 8.0.5 from the Asus website (under drivers, not on the U35 section) and it is by far the most stable yet... both mouse and scrolling are rock solid. I was using the 'bootleg' version that allows other gestures (see earlier posts) but it still jumped a bit... enough to be annoying, especially during scrolling. This one does not have the added gestures, but is definitely what I will stay with due to the stable tracking/ scrolling.

    Hey everyone!

I just received my Asus U35JC-A1 today and I am very excited to use it. I was curious as to which updates I should install on my computer for it to perform at it's best? I know it is somewhere on this thread but searching through 316 pages is too much! Thanks in advance, I appreciate everyone's help!

Does anyone know which sound formats the U35jc support? If I connect it to my AV receiver the display says MPCM. like when Ps3 is connected. So does the asus support HD formats like Dolby true hd and DTS HD-MA ?

And does it support bitstream audio or just as MPCM?

I have a had a U35JC for two weeks and in that time I have had a USB mouse, a USB keyboard and a USB flash drive all stop working while they have been plugged into the computer. The devices are all fried and are not recognized by other computers. Now the computer will not boot up (not even show BIOS screen) if any USB device is plugged in.

Any ideas? Have I got a bad motherboard that is over powering the USB ports? Why no boot if a (new) USB mouse is plugged in?

USB devices, if they're shorted or otherwise broken, will prevent your computer from booting. That is normal, I've had a bad razer mouse do this to me. It could be a motherboard problem. I'd think about returning it for an exchange if you determine it is the cause of your fried USB devices.

I am very disappointed with my U35JC. I received it around 3 weeks ago and it's been nothing but problems. From the beginning I have been experiencing random firefox crashes, Random wireless drops (Event viewer shows other services starting and stopping also), and even some bluescreens (STOP errors and IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL errors). I have updated all my drivers to the latest version, and have the latest bios. I have run memtest, prime95, hdtach, and every other stress test and it passes all of these with flying colors. I have restored the system image twice, and installed windows 7 ultimate with the same results. A strange thing to note is, When I run linux I can use it for hours without problems, which makes me think this may be a software error..

I'm at my wits end here. I believe it must be some type of hardware error, but I cannot identify which piece is causing the issue. I guess my only option is to RMA it, But I don't want to do that because I can't be without my laptop for a few weeks, at the beginning of my semester! Does anyone have ANY ideas as to what could be causing my problems? I thought asus had a great reputation for reliability..

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is almost always a driver issue, usually graphics.

I'm aware of that, But sometimes it is other errors. It is very strange, It happens at random. The most prevelant issue is random firefox crashes. I have updated again to the latest nvidia/intel drivers and it seems to be getting better. Very strange.

hello everyone - loving my u35jc purchase so far ... works brilliantly

question of the day - I'm thinking about an 8gb ram upgrade, is DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) the fastest RAM that this baby will handle? 8gb at Newegg is only 83 bucks

    thanks!

No. The fastest RAM that this motherboard (Notebook) can handle is DDR3 1067 MHz (PC3 8500). Though, you can get a faster RAM (if it's cheaper), it will just run whatever the motherboard bandwidth allows (slowest common denominator).

PNY 8GB (2x4GB) at newegg have gone as low as $53 (after $25 rebate). I know because I got it. If you look around, wait for 1 to 2 weeks, there will be deals around. DDR3 RAM's now are "a dime a dozen," sort of speak.

Anyway, here's the direct link to the drivers page. The Elantech 8.05 drivers are right at the top of the list.

xoticpc.com has the u43jc and it seems really nice. It has USB 3.0. It is also upgradeable all the way to a core i7 640m 2.8ghz-3.44ghz. They also have the option to apply artic silver thermal paste. And they have the option to replace the optical drive with a HDD. Seems like a really nice laptop.

Core i7 640m, geforce 310m w/ optimus, usb 3.0, primary drive SSD, 12.7mm 1TB secondary drive in optical bay, IC Diamond Thermal grease for GPU and CPU. Now that's a thing of beauty.

i finaly got my u35Jc , lovely notebook . but in my country i found only with 6cell battery which stay about 5 hour .

    ---

i have series of questions :

1: How can Overclock / Underclock Integrated Graphic & Nvidia GPU ?!
by underclocking IGP we can get less battery consumption . my old asus ( A6K with Gforce 6200 ) could be underclocked very nice and that was effective on battery life .

2: same question ( Overclocking / Underclocking ) For CPU . in idle mode with all desktop features available in power saving mode , the CPU Usage is around 0 - 1 % , so i think if i could underclock it from 1200Mhz to about 800Mhz i can get more battery life.

3: My Webcam Doesn't appear in MyComputer and i can use it , the driver installed correctly and in device manager i see camera without errors . but there is no webcam in mycomputer. OS : Win7 x64

4: is there any official or unofficial Windows XP drivers for U35jc Hardwares . ill prefer WindowsXP Or Linux Over Win7 . its very Heavy and Battery Killer.

    thanks.

For overclocking the gpu, i recomend the nvidiaInspector. It works perfect to me. For stability, 3dMark Vantage.
For underclock gpu, think tan can be use the nvidiaInspector aswell... but using the intel hd igpu, should be even better.
For overclock/underclock the cpu, didn't find anything at all for mine u30jc.
    The webcam, don't know anything...
WindowsXP/Linux can be used... but those OS can't use the optimus tecnology, and that means no nvidia gpu for them. Only intel hd igpu.

not sure why you say that Windows 7 is a battery killer. from everything i've read and my own experience dual-booting both, windows 7 has far better power management and hence longer battery life than linux or windows xp.

Don't know how to overclock/underclock the intel hd igpu. But it consume less power than the geforce 310m. That's why i sugested you to use it. That's one of the best features of Optimus (low power consumption using the intelhd igpu).
About the memory clock, don't forget that is DDR type memory, so you must duplicate the frecuency from the cpu-z.

Nothing is wrong with it. The double rate of 548Mhz is 1096Mhz; which is a little overclocked from 1066. If you look further, you will see your CPU is overclocked to 2466Mhz (from intel spec of 2.4Ghz). You need not to trouble yourself with it as this is an Asus's 3% OEM overclocking.

On a different note (though of similar path), my 2x4GB PNY RAM sticks are capable of running at 761Mhz *2 (DDR, JEDEC #6) but due to the motherboard limitation, they can run only at a frequency of 548Mhz*2.

Does anyone know if there is a guide on how to open / disassemble the notebook? I would like to upgrade the wifi card to an Intel 6300 wifi card but don't know which screws to turn. I just don't want to fiddle around and break things.

For those who had opened the laptop, can you please write a short bullet points of what you did? Thanks.

Just bought this notebook but am confused by some of the features, can you guys help?? Please bear with me as I have quite a few questions and the 319 pages of this thread is overwhelming. Appreciate the help!

    1) How come there isn't a pinch to zoom function? The 8.0.7.0 drivers are beta and not even available on Asus website anymore...

    2) What is Super Hybrid Engine and how does it work along with Power 4 Gear? In p4g I can set it to high performance, quiet office, etc. but there is a separate option to enable or disable SHE. What does it do and should I use it? P4g also has min max cpu settings, doesn't this conflict with SHE?? Also in P4G 1.0.40, there is no more SHE option!!

    3) Should I just uninstall p4g and use windows 7 power management?? Which is better?

    4) Is it necessary to have Asus Liveupdate running in the tray? If not, how do I stop it??

    5) Does Asus AI Recovery rely on the Cyberlink Power2go software? Seems after I uninstalled Cyberlink I can no longer burn recovery discs and I have to save the ISOs and burn manually.

    6) Is it recommended to keep Asus Fast Boot?

    7) Under Nvidia Control Panel, should the default setting for "Preferred Graphics Processor" under Global Settings be set to auto-select in order to enable the Optimus switching between Intel HD and Geforce 310M??

    8) When I play youtube videos on 360p it is fine, but as soon as I switch resolutions the video freezes and sound keeps playing. I am using the latest Intel HD and Nvidia 310M drivers. Anyone else have the same problem? I cannot right click and select "Settings", it is greyed out.

Anyone with answers to any of the questions above? Could really use the help!

It looks like the WiFi card only has 2 antenna wires coming from it. Is there a hidden 3rd wire anywhere? Else I guess I'll have to replace the antenna if I install an Intel 6300.

Of the Asus utilities that came with this laptop p4g, the ATK hotkey utilities, and the wlan utility (for fn+f2 enable/disable) are the only ones I kept. p4g is actually configured pretty with optimal performance settings and optimal battery life settings. I recommend it, but technically you can make these configurations yourself and spare ~4MB of memory usage that the p4g requires. Just takes time.
    Uninstall it.
Even more recommended is to clean install Windows 7 and install only ATK drivers and ATK utilities. Then, when need arises you can install any other Asus utilities from their website. I am amazed at how much faster my computer runs now, compared to uninstalling all the pre-loaded software.
Try the official nVidia 266.58 drivers. Even through they don't list Optimus as a supported technology, they do work. You just need to make sure that the Intel graphics drivers are already installed and working before you install the nVidia driver. The setting "Preferred Graphics Processor" seems to work well for autodetecting when nVidia power is necessary. Not sure how it works, but it does. The drivers I linked have a tray utility that you can enable to see when the nVidia chip is being utilized.

In terms of driver reconfiguration, Win 7 is considerably more resilient to changes than previous versions of Windows. It's actually likely that it'll work alright.

    Issues you will likely face:
    1) Your Asus specific utilities may have to be uninstalled and then the appropriate versions for u35jc re-installed.
    2) You may need to re-activate windows (perhaps with the key written on the bottom of your u35jc)

    Wow alfred thank you!

    1) So for NVIDIA, should the setting be Auto-Select under "preferred graphics processor"?

    2) Any idea how SHE (Super Hybrid Engine) works, and if it hurts performance to have it enabled? I know in version 1.0.40 of Power4Gear SHE is on all the time, which makes me hesitant to upgrade to it (I'm using the version that came with the laptop and has a SHE gadget and on/off option for SHE. Currently have it switched to OFF).

    3) Does anyone know where to find stable Elantech drivers with pinch/zoom?

    4) I've installed the lastest Intel HD Drivers (8.15.10.2291), the latest Nvidia 310M drivers (266.58), and the latest Flash 10.2.
    a) Can you verify using the Nvidia drivers GPU tray icon that Intel HD is used for Youtube videos and not Nvidia 310M, in Internet Explorer 8?
    b) Whenever I watch Youtube, if I change resolution of the video it will play sound only and be stuck, however if I popout the video it works. Also if I switch to 240p first, then to whatever resolution I want, it works as well. Does no one else have this problem??

On u35jc SHE lowers the FSB and CPU clocks. The Power Saving Mode clocks the CPU at 1.2GHz, but someone should correct me if I'm wrong. On a daily basis, P4G and ATK drivers is all you need from Asus for the lappy to work correctly and achieve higher battery time. Mine is somewhere near 5 hours with SHE enabled.

Regarding Youtube movie player and other flash-based interfaces, I have the same issues on both computers I own. I think it's a problem with Flash 10.2, for I have switched to 10.1 and everything is ok for now. Search Google for Flash uninstaller, and Flash 10.1.

    Update: More details here

    Good luck!

    Thanks for all the info!

Is it safe to say that SHE is beneficial then (I've read people complaining that their computer was running too slow and it was because of SHE, but that was on earlier eeepcs)? I'd love improved battery life but if SHE isn't smart enough to speed up the CPU when needed, then I can live without it. Say for example I have it set on Quiet Office or lower, would the CPU be unable to speed up to regular speed?

Can anyone check and see if their Nvidia Optimus driver is set to "Auto-Select" under Preferred Graphics Processor in the Global Settings tab (3d settings)?

I'm about to buy a new notebook, and have fallen in love with the u35. But that was before I read this thead about the high pitch sound. Would you advise me to buy it or not?
I also have a second question: I was going to buy the U35JC-RX040V, with i3, but today i found the U35JC-RX193V, with i5. Both of them cost exactly the same. Is it fake/ misspelled or true?

Yep. Nvidia Optimus is set to Auto Select. My recommendation on all this is: don't worry about it. Yes, the combo of SHE and P4G slows down the CPU... but the result is awesome battery life... you need to define 'too slow'... unless something you are doing (streaming video? 3d game?) is visually not working the way you desire or you doing something CPU intensive like video conversion... the whole CPU speed thing isn't really an issue. And if you ARE seeing stuff slow down... simply push the P4G button (upper left) and change the mode! I used Quiet Office almost exclusively when I am just browsing on battery and it always seems fine. When playing games, doing video, etc... I swap to High Performance mode (push the button twice). Piece of cake. On the NVidia side... it works great. I always use the newest NVidia drivers and have had no issues.. and it always seems to kick in when I need it. Bottom line: the CPU 'modes' and the Optimus are the very reasons to buy this laptop... the perfect mix of portability (weight), size, performance, and battery life... if you want all the power all the time... get something bigger & faster... and it will likely be quite a bit cheaper!

Hey shotgunb, thanks for checking the setting for me. You make a pretty good point and it is pretty easy to switch depending on what you want to use.

It is confusing that in older P4G's the power plans had Min and Max cpu settings regardless of whether SHE was enabled or disabled, I'm confused as to what purpose SHE serves if the power plans are able to limit the cpu already.

Also for someone like my dad who isn't computer inclined, if I set it in quiet office mode would he be able to watch his hd movies without the cpu causing them to be choppy?

Finally, has anyone found a solution to the Elantech 8.0.7.0 touchpad drivers losing the pinch/zoom etc functions on system wake (besides not putting the pc to sleep...)?

I watch movies on the Quiet Office mode when flying and have never had any choppiness or issues... but could depend on how you rip/encode.

I actually gave up on the 8.0.7 as it jumped too much for me during scrolling, which I use ALOT more than pinch/zoom. Currently using the newest 'official' release 8.0.5 (on the Asus site) and it is rock solid... no jumpiness at all (for me). That being said, I think the sleep/wake issue is directly connected to USB (and probably why they don't enable those gestures on the U35). That being said, I actually discovered a trick. For me... when I have the camera disabled in P4G (checkbox in the bottom left corner on the version I use)... the trackpad KEEPS the gestures after wake! This is totally reproducible for me but others have had mixed luck. Try it. Realize there are different settings for battery power vs plugged in... so you need to disable the camera for both if you want the gestures to work all the time. All you need to do when you want to use the camera is enable it... but when you do, if you sleep the laptop you will lose the gestures until you disable the camera again. Hope that works for you!

I bought it today. In the add it said 8 cell battery, but it came with a 6 cell.

Thanks for the trick! I think I will downgrade to 8.0.5 as well because I'm finding the 8.0.7 crashes an annoying amount and the edge scroll is quite buggy. Disabling the camera would be a solution but since my dad would like to do video chats with relatives this wouldn't be feasible. Guess we'll have to live without pinch/zoom and rotate etc. It's really interesting that a laptop as great as the U35 lacks some of the basic features.

Hrmm ok strange bug that I'm noticing with Power4Gear 1.1.40. I have the require password on wake setting set to Yes for all power4gear power plans. For some reason, when I switch powerplans the require password setting is turned off for the previous used plan (ie if I was on Quiet Office, and I switch to something else, Quiet Office will now have password set to off). Cycling through all of the plans means no password on wake for any of them. Anyone have a fix?

EDIT: Ok only Quiet Office and Battery Saving seem to get set to off, High Performance and Entertainment retain their on settings... interesting

    P.S. Anyone try Power4Gear version 1.1.43??

    Hello everyone,

I got my U35JC about two months ago and all has been great. So far I love this laptop, especially how light it is. It's also pretty enough to eat (though not very edible... trust me, i tried).

Regarding the high pitch whine during cpu idle, it was fairly disturbing when I first got the laptop but I've learnt to live with it. It's not that bad now that I've learnt to use it in places with some slight ambiance instead of complete utter silence. However there's a slight issue regarding fan noise.

My first month and a half with the my U35JC was blissful, the fan rarely ever turned out. Half-way through february the fan sudden went full throttle on me one day and it scared the living bejesus out of me. Ever since, the fan's been turning on and off intermittently (I use 'Quiet Office' setting) instead of remaining off. The laptop's been a lot cooler though (used to get uncomfortably hot) but the fan seems to sound different. It makes a 'refrigerator-like' noise. I think my fan might be broken or something.

How would most of you describe the noise produced by the U35JC's fan?

I have the u35jc-a1 and i tried installing the new driver on the asus website and even tried the link here and it keeps freezing once i restart windows. It never goes to the desktop. Also, for "Preferred Graphics Processor" on the Nvidia control panel, I can only choose the Nvidia or the Intel graphics card. I don't know if there's suppose to be an auto select options. Is my nvidia gpu faulty?

I ran the geekbench and my score is 1616, that doesn't sound right.

I got mine at the beginning of September (when they first came out) and my fan is near silent during even high stress work. If I put my ear to it I can hear it, otherwise basically silent. I only hear the 'whine' during certain usages in very quiet areas... funny but the worst 'whine' program is google chrome... it will come on when using chrome sometimes and quitting the program will cause the tone to immediately go away. Odd but not that big a deal or noticeable to me... definitely no fan noise though.

Eeks, oh noes. I think I might need to RMA my poor baby now. Starting to get attached to it (for some reason wasn't very excited when I got it... maybe that had to do with lack of intimacy; i use a wireless keyboard :p)

Sighz, I'mma try using it without chrome for a while and see how it goes. Otherwise I'm gonna have to RMA once the semesters over.
