IS it only my U35JC or does anyone else is also experiencing very bad sound quality for the microphone?

People were complaining so much about the noise when we were talking via Skype that I had to buy an external mic.

I'm having a hard time to believe that such a good laptop would require an external mic :(

Let me know your oppinion if I should change some configuration, send it for repairs or simply accept that Asus have really used a crappy mic for this model.

    thanks

I have done quite a bit of skype and the mic works great. Pretty sure Skype allows you to test your mic by recording and playing back... I would try that or an alternate record method to ensure the problem is with the mic.

Palmrest is a metalic 'looking' grey plastic but very durable and doesn't show fingerprints... the bezel is the asus standard very shiny black plastic that shows fingerprints/scratches. Palmrest is great... bezel is annoying but pretty common on most laptops

when i play online videos say on youtube or wherever, and i'm talking regular quality like 240 or 360p, my videos will freeze every several seconds (maybe 5-8) for about a second then resume having skipped the 1 second where it was frozen. i MIGHT accept this if i was playing 1080p or even 720p but even watching tiny videos running at maybe 240p makes this happen as well.

    is this normal?

Could be that your problem is your internet connection, not your computer. The answer is No... that is not normal. What setting are you running in? Change to high performance to ensure you are running at maximum speed

I am looking to buy either a U35jc or U31. Have any U35 owners looked at the U31 and compared them? Is the display the same(poor viewing angles), or is one better, is the keyboard the same (some flex) and does the U31 have the whine the U35 has? Lastly, do all U35 have the high pitched whine, or only some? There are none available where I live to compare, but the size and specs are what I am looking for.

I have the U35JC and love it... but not certain why anyone would choose it over the U31 unless you get a great deal. The U31 has a better CPU and better GPU and if you can live with a 320Gig HD, it is less money (amazon). I have read the viewing angle is better (it is VERY narrow on this model... but when it is angled right it looks great) and I have read that the U31 DOES have the whine. My U35 absolutely has the whine... but it is rare and I only even notice it in VERY quiet areas... definitely annoying when it happens tho'... some programs cause it more than others (google chrome is the worst for me).

Anyway... if you can live with the minor issues, these are AWESOME laptops. I have had mine all over Iraq and it has withstood alot of travel... still looks/ works great and the battery life is still awesome.

hey guys is there a way to add more touch pad gestures to the asus u35jc? I'm using only the ones, that are included in the elantech driver by default. I was wondering if i'm able to add something new like zoom for example, maybe using some other software? Any ideas? 10x in advance.

Shotgunb, can you look at the serial number of your U35? Does it start with an A or a B? Also, what month did you buy it? I called ASUS tech support and they said the A serial numbers had the whine and the B were "corrected" and did not have the whine. Also, Early models had whine, models built November 2010 and after should not have the whine. Since you have the whine, I want to see if what the tech told me is correct. Thanks.

Kent, Mine is one of the very first once they became available in the USA... and it has an "A" serial number. Got it in early Sep 10. For what its worth, I seem to only get the whine with certain programs (as stated above) and on one of the 'power saving' modes. If I run High Performance I never get it (apparently the issue is audible resonance in the CPU at lower power states). Awesome if they fixed it, your email is the first I have heard of that... and have seen reviews stating the same issue with the newer laptops. For me it is a complete non-issue. Like I said, only noticeable in really quiet situations and happens rarely. I have owned numerous laptops in my time and for what I use it for it is the best I have ever owned at meeting my requirements.

Hey, havent posted on here for a while, pretty happy with my u35j so far (apart from inevitable fingerprint smearing on black finish...ugh) How are people finding gaming performance? I'm not a big gamer but installed a bunch of games last week, mixed feeling (i know its a fairly low powered gfx chip and all but anyway...)
Fifa 2011...jerky...not a lot of fun, strangely pro evo runs really well.
Dead Space 2....runs perfectly well..maybe its an old graphics engine, but Ive got it running on my HD projector playing with a 360 pad, v good and v creepy! great fun
Bulletstorm..moderate settings, but plays well, looks good.
shogun total war 2...epic fail, can almost feel the puter screaming under the pressure of running it at about 10 fps, unplayable for me
Blur/need for speed hot pursuit, playable but not silky smooth. Feels like 15 fps or so.
Older games (dawn of war etc) eats them up no prob, as you'd expect.

Work wise, can handle hd editing in vegas no prob, 3d max decent-ish.

The optimus doesnt seem to kick in unless i right click and specifically choose it, even though its on default

Going to install crysis 2...pray for me

Can someone definitively confirm the SATA connection of the U35JC-RX040V?
I suspect that the reported SATA-150 listed by most retailers refers to the HDD, and not the actual SATA interface of the motherboard.

The chipset Mobile Intel HM55 Express supports SATA-300 according to Intel's website, however, I'd like to confirm this is correct.

I got a U35JC in December 2010, now 5 months later I am faced with the first problem - fan rattling/grinding noise.

Firstly, the fan comes on much more often now, even when the machine is idle, and secondly it now makes a worrying rattling noise that suggests friction.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? I am seriously considering opening up the machine and cleaning the fan, but that is one tricky procedure since it involves removing 4 layers in order to reach the fan module.

Anyone try Dragon Age II on their U35JC? Seems it meets the min requirements but figure it is unlikely it would be playable... any experience out there?

@pavel_btn try to blow on the fan with some compressed air. If it's rattling after that, send it in for replacement since it's probably got a bad bearing.

hey guys i have a question..when i'm charging my u35jc and the battery is over 95% full the charge rate drops to under 2000mW (when over 97% even under 1500mW) and it takes around an hour for the laptop to fully charge between 95 and 100%. Is that normal? I'm using battery bar.

Yes at 95% it will usually stop charging, to prevent overcharge. It's in a lot of user manuals, it's a common feature across all ASUS notebooks. You can generally get it to 100% on a trickle charge, or by powering the machine off and letting it charge.

Hey Pavel, yes I have U35JC purchased Sept and have precisely the same issue. It just started happening the last 2 weeks. Blew some air through, but no improvement. Think I'll contact Asus tech support. I'm pretty good with laptops but not confident enough to open it up to get to the buried fan.

If you try something, please let me know how it goes.

    Regards, John

I have the exact same issue as well and purchased my laptop around September of last year. Actually, this happened two me about 10 weeks ago as well and i sent in my laptop before to have them look at it and they replaced the fan for me. Unfortunately, several days my laptop went through the same problem again for some reason? I have a good case and take good care of my laptop so maybe there is a manufacturing error with our laptops?

Mine is a September laptop too... no issues at all with the fan... still VERY quiet. Assuming it is broken, however, you should be able to use the warranty for a replacement... right?

I have noticed that my AC adapter is running really hot all of the time now. Not sure if I didn't notice it before, or if it always did this so I'm curious what anyone else is experiencing.

It's hot if I'm plugged in and using the laptop, or if I'm not using it with the lid closed just recharging. Almost to hot to hold for more than a few seconds

Anyone here feel like the asus u45jc has poor battery life? When i first got the laptop late last year, it got 4 hours at the most. Now, i don't seem to get more than 3 hours max. More often than not its a bit over 2 hours. And i'm not even multitasking. I'm just browsing online.

I got it mainly because they mentioned an 8 hour battery life. I was dissappointed when i first used it and the battery was no where near that. And right now, i say 3 hours is max it would go and i'm even on battery save mode.

    Anyone else like this?

Anyone here feel like the asus u45jc has poor battery life? When i first got the laptop late last year, it got 4 hours at the most. Now, i don't seem to get more than 3 hours max. More often than not its a bit over 2 hours. And the thing is if i would just get 2 hours of battery life, i know lot of 15 inch laptops would have been a better choice for me. And with the low battery life i'm getting, i'm not even multitasking. I'm just browsing online websites and nothing else. I'm not even playing videos nor music.

I got it mainly because they mentioned an 8 hour battery life and of course it is lightweight and 14.1'. I was disappointed when i first used it and the battery was no where near that 8 hour promise but i knew that was always exaggerated a bit but assumed it was somewhere around 5 hours or so. And right now, i say 3 hours is max it would go and i'm even on battery save mode. The brightness is always halfway by the way. The other thing is many times when i'm on my laptop, i don't use it the entire 3 hours and take many breaks while doing other stuff. If that is the case, why is my battery life still so poor? I remembered once i used one of these dell business laptops and the battery life on it was at least 5 hours and i was just browsing and nothing else. I thought the Asus laptops really have great battery life but from what i seen, its nothing more than average.

Anyone else like this? I remembered when i first got it, i would see the battery life show 7 hours but then after 2 hours, it would go to 2 hours left. But the thing is i RARELY use my laptop. I had it for 7 months and never used it more than 2 times a week and there was many weeks where i wouldn't even open my asus and just be on my desktop.

Also, does anyone feel like the laptop lags a bit? Its been like this ever since i got it. Whenever i click on firefox or open a program, there is always a lag and i can even feel it. I have even formatted my laptop few months ago as well to get rid of the bloatware or whatnot but i have been extremely dissatisfied with this computer.

Anyone else have this problems i'm having with the Asus u45jc?

I have heard alot of people with your problem. What you need to check is which GPU u are using. I easy get 9 Hours. I later bought a 12Cell Bat. and now Windows only shows 10:00 hours for like 3 hours before starting to count down.
    When surfing: around 8 hours.
When using this laptop U need to be specific with which GPU to use. Mine: Nvidia only kicks in during Gaming and Web surfing.

I noticed that Mine was set at: Nvidia kicks in at Desktop already. this is off course not smart.

Also learn how to use Power4Hybrid from Asus. Which make you switch off other things like Webcam & CD/DVD Drive.

Once again: After Reinstalling Windows+shutting off useless services and Programs, I easy started couting down from 9 Hours. and After adding a 12cell I felt like living in Alaska. (that much energy I had :p)

Off course you need to check the basics.
    - Batteries DEAD?

    Then Optimise Laptop:
    - How far is Your CPU overclocking... Do You want that? (Bios?)
    - When is your GPU kicking in?....... Is it necessary?
    - Which Programs are running?... Do you really need them?
    - Which Windows services are running?(Win Update..etc).... Really necessary?

To clarify my set-up, and Why I could reach 9-10 hours:
    - CPU never really reaches 2.4Ghz (Mostly 1.5Ghz).. Only when Editing Videos...
    - GPU only used with: Games/1080P Videos/FireFox 4/Adobe CS4 Suite/Cyberlink Media Suite. (only when really needed)
    - Programs running.. Only when I am working with them... (No virus Scanner)
    - Windows services down to 40-45. (Classic Windows Look/No gadgets/) Just the Basics
Result: I can read/write/edit a document for roughly 7 hours. using short bursts of Wlan/Gpu and bright screen. Some days with out GPU/WLAN and low screen.. I really get a days work with out plugin in. 9-10 hours!!!

YEAH this laptop changed my productivity.......... hope it helps.

MY GPU is called Nvidia Optimus. I see that on the area of my laptop on the bottom left. It says great battery life and great battery performance underneath it...

My laptop is an i3 processor with 4gb ram. Hard drive is 500GB 7200RPM.

I am positive my battery is not dead because its always been like this ever since i got it. I bought it from xoticpc.com by the way.

I don't do overclocking or any of that stuff. I don't have a clue about those things.

I'm not even running many programs at all. All i'm doing is browsing on firefox. No videos nor music. I don't even play any games.

I see you mentioned some other people had this problem. Can anyone who solved this problem tell me what they did? Pretty much after a full charge, it only shows around 3.5 hours but when i browse, it gets no more than 2.5 hours and that is being VERY LENIENT.

Optimus only works on Window 7 and on Linux with some new unofficial software.

    Latest Nvidia drivers: v.275.33 WHQL

    Touchpad newest driver: Version 8.0.7.0 Win7 32/64bits

Before installing the new touchpad driver remember to uninstall the old version first and let Windows 7 to automatically install its own generic drivers. I tell you this because if you don't do it this way then you'll have 2 different ELAN property menus. This is a well known glitch and it is kinda hard to fix without reinstalling the entire OS again but it doesn't affect the overall performance of the touchpad anyway. So if you mess it up don't worry, you'll only have the same menu twice when you click on the mouse properties in control panel but nothing else will be affected. :p

just right-click the desktop, select NVIDIA Control Panel and then click manage 3D settings". Here select the Global Settings tab and below you'll have 3 choices:

    1. Auto-Select
    2. High-performance NVIDIA Processor (always "on")
    3. Integrated graphics (Nvidia GPU always "off")

or you can go to the Program Settings tab to manually set everything individually.

Gue1 Already gave U the most importation part.
    To add to that:
    - My Global settings is on "Integrated". this way the desktop will only use internal GPU not Nvidia.
    - How many Services/Processes is your Computer running? (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC = Windows Task Manager > Look below to see the number of Processes. "Processes: 50" a Default Asus laptop can have up to 90. which is much. try to reduce this. which will also reduce your CPU usage...... See how far you get with these tips

    Hey i see 48 Processes...

    Sizoumu are you there?

Does that mean if i reduce the processes, then my battery life will get higher? I'm frustrated that my asus u45jc doesn't get more than 2.5 hours of battery life even from just web browsing.

Does anyone else know how to fix this problem? 2.5 hour battery life when browsing really sucks when i bought this laptop mainly because of battery life. Could it be because i bought it off xoticpc?

so 48 processes is a good amount.
How many mAh does your batterie have? some U45JC come with a lower model batteries. I read that some where.... so just check to be sure.

What P4G mode are you running? The button in the upper left (opposite the power button) should cycle between the various P4G modes unless you altered your software. There are 4 modes: Battery, Quiet Office, Entertainment, and High Performance. You can vary the settings under each... but in High performance your times are about right. I usually use Quiet Office as 'battery' is stripped down too much for my desires... but get 6+ hrs on Quiet Office, while I will only get 2.5-3hrs on High Performance.

You can also try battery management software to evaluate your battery and the 'steady state' draw of the setting you are on. There are many posts that provide reviews of these programs and 'normal' results.

hi :) i'm using the u35jc-a1 for 6 months now and everything is perfect, but i feel like it takes too much time to boot...after i finish entering my pass i have to wait let's say 20 to 30 seconds to see my desktop...I have fresh installed win7 sp1, startup programs: bitdefender AV, elan smart pad and that's it! i have disabled both nvidia and intel control panels, etc. Superfetch is enabled. I tryed asus fast boot but it didn't seem to work at all. Before I reinstalled my OS i think that my laptop was booting faster with all the bloatware it came with. Any suggestions?

shotgunb, i'm in Balanced mode. Either that or power saver mode. I never use high performance mode unless i'm plugged in. Balanced mode or power saver mode only gets me 2.5-3 hours at the very max. I think High performance mode gets me under 2 hours. Sometimes even 1.5 hours or less...

sizomo, how would i knkow how many mAh batteries i have?

Also, where do you see quiet office mode?

I only have balanced mode, power saver mode and high performance mode.

Sounds like you are not using P4G... which likely is your problem. P4G is a proprietary ASUS power management software program. Some don't like it and prefer to stay with the windows settings but I have always used P4G and have had no issues. You can download it from the Asus site via the U35JC model page under utilities... or if you are adventurous and desire to use the 'latest' version, if you put 'apps' in the laptop model name and select P4G Hybrid, it will have all versions and you can download/install the very latest. I would definitely install it and see if that helps. As far as battery size, it should say it on the battery itself (take it out of the computer and look at the sticker). Mine is the 'stock' battery (UL50-56)... 84000mAh. A program like batteryMon will let you see your current expenditures... if you are using 10000mA... you would get 8.4hrs (in theory). Hope that helps

    This is it right?

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download P4G

I just googled p4g asus and it had this link.

Right now after i downloaded it, i see options

    power4gear entertainment
    power4gear quiet office
    power4gear battery saving
    power4gear high performance

In terms of greater battery life, it would be

    1. power4gear battery saving
    2. power4gear quiet office
    3. power4gear entertainment
    4. power4gear high performance

    Correct?

Also, i just pressed the top left button on my laptop and it doesn't work. I remembered that it used to change modes for things. Could it be broken?

I haven't clicked this button in a while already and just noticed this right now. Or could it be possible that this button is disabled or does that not make any sense?

And would multitasking while using power4gear quiet office mode be a bad idea? Do you only use that if you are web browsing? What about watching a movie?

And what is the brightness level you have when using power4gear quiet mode?

    The battery is

    Li-Ion Battery Pack a42-UL50

    Rating: +15V 5600mAh, 84Wh

Does that mean my battery is worth than yours since its smaller number? And how many hours would my battery get?

How do you know this and where can i check?

And which power4gear mode do you use? And what is the brightness level?

The P4G Installer I used for my latest version ends in: Z1144
Your battery shows the same capacity as mine: 84kwh... so no different
As far as modes/settings, it is all a comparison of 'desire' vs battery life. If you go min-brightness on Battery Saver, you likely will get best battery life... but I don't like it that way. I tend to use Quiet Office... and if things are bogging down and I want more power, I got to high performance mode. When I am done doing the thing that requires high performance, I go back to quiet office. I watch movies, etc, with no problem on quiet office and still get great battery life. Realize a movie is constantly accessing your drive, so it will reduce battery life no matter what mode you are in. I get 4-5 hrs watching movies in Quiet Office, however, so battery life is still good. Not sure about the button... could be a driver is missing, sounds likely you did a clean install vs using the factory setup... many have had issues with this because they didn't install all the factory drivers.

    Hope that helps

I'm greeted with the "camera is being used by another program" while opening LifeFrame3 today. Already tried uninstalling/installing the webcam driver and LifeFrame3 but the the camera just refuse to work. Already checked for any webcam driver issue in device manager but nothing seems to be amiss. Not too sure what's the problem is and I had spent nearly 4 hours searching on the internet for an answer but to no avail. Any help will be very much appreciated.

my palm rest and hole of laptop's body is getting warm during idle and no activity and the laptop fan turning at very low speed . how i can force the fan to turn at higher speed ?

for example , in idle and battery saving mode , when the lcd is turned off and the charger pluged out i feel the temp about 5 or 6 degree above human body temperature.

is there any application to control the fan speed ?
