I tried this method on my U35JC (i3 370M) and the whine stops but according to BatteryBar the discharge rate in idle goes from about 7W to 12W (and the fan speed gets higher).
-
I know I have seen this before and cannot recall what caused it... might be one of two things:
- Might be worth checking power4gear and make sure the camera is selected in the profile you are using
- Are you running the face-recognition log-in program? If so, that may be stealing the camera as well... fun toy, but that program messed with my camera enough that I stopped using it.
Basically recommend you close all running apps (make sure none of the ASUS Apps the use the cam are running in your startup profile) and check P4G to make sure it isn't disabling your cam.
Good luck -
I've already tried all possible solutions including yours but to no avail. I guess the service centre is my next stop. Thanks anyway. -
Sorry... for what its worth, I looked back, and it definitely WAS one of the Asus programs that booted in the background and took the camera... either the facial logon program or lifeframe or something. I deleted the actual programs but pretty sure changing your startup in MSCONFIG should do the trick... however if you have already done all that, likely no luck.
good luck -
Can anyone else verify if this works?
-
Yes that works however, it will make your Asus a bit more hotter
Okay, so reinstall W7U OS again and also installed all the drivers from ASUS page but my Windows score is 3.9 on the graphic section
How are you guys running your WEI? -
Sounds correct... I get 3.9 as well... as this score is for your Intel HD graphics... the score below that is for the nVidia graphics card and mine is 5.8
-
So I just got Steam and downloaded TF2 on my U35JC. However, when I try to play it, Steam gives me a warning that I'm using the integrated graphics. How do I make it so that TF2 uses the dedicated graphics card?
-
Make sure Steam has the NVidia as default. Right click on the Steam icon, select 'run with graphics processor' and make sure NVidia is the default. Can also check the game itself but if you are running through Steam there should be no issue... I have Bioshock 2 and Portal 2 both running off steam and they work great... framerate/graphics on Bioshock are much better than expected... both games look awesome and run flawlessly.

Does anyone know of any good resources to find a searchable list of Asus laptop options? There are so many models, it's difficult to get to a good target.
For instance, if I wanted to see what 12" laptops ASUS has that have a Sandy Bridge CPU. Or which EeePCs use the N570 Atom CPU.
Also, any good resources on different sub-model numbers (pu17 vs pu27, etc.). I have done fine doing random Google searches to find the answer to these questions, but want to make sure there isn't a good resource already available.
Lastly, any good blogs on ASUS product updates? i.e., when a product is actually available for purchase (UX21, X101, EeePC 1025, etc.). -
Okay so my U35 has been having this problem: when I play video/stream video or even listening to music , it sometimes freezes, but not completely, the sound would be like in extreme slow-mo, and it will resume back to normal after 30 seconds or so, sometimes shorter sometimes longer.
Could it be the sound card driver? Or is it the video card driver?
I update all my drivers to the newest, or is it better to just use the one on Asus site (older versions?) -
I'm so fed up with my U45JC. And with Asus.
I sent my laptop to be repaired because of the plethora of issues it has. The main ones being:
Bluescreens and freezes about 20 times a day
Overheats to 90C
Wifi shuts off
I got it back and it was worse. The laptop was stuttering about once a minute. The heat reached 90C quicker than ever, and it still bluescreened.
I sent it again noting that 95C is plenty hot enough to cause damage to the processor itself. And that NONE of the issues were fixed. I got an email the other day saying they ran their own tests and found the laptop does not overheat at all, which is COMPLETE BULL. They also stated there isn't damaged components internally.
The problem isn't even the heat anymore as it's now more the damage the heat has left, which is shown in the stuttering the laptop does.
I'm afraid I'll be having to send it back a third time only to have them dance around appalled and not knowing how to fix anything.
Basically, worst company and worst laptop in existence. Asus used to be so good. Now they are awful. -
Before throwing it to the trash have you tried doing a clean install yourself? Blue screens are most of the time due to driver problems and the overheat could be because you have Bios 207. They changed the fan behavior on the Bios 208 because people were complaining about the heat last year.
After the clean install just install these 6 drivers plus the bios 208 from the Asus site (if you don't have it) and let the other stuff be updated through Windows Update.
Touchpad
Intel HD [VGA]
Nvidia 310M [VGA]
ATK
camera suyin
Intel Chipset (it has to be the one on the Asus site or else the CPU will run slow, don't install generic)
Here's how to make a bootable USB: How To make Bootable USB
And how to download a legal copy of Windows 7: http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html
U45jc drivers: http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=U45JC&p=3&s=270
It takes time but it's easy. And BTW you can save your stuff in the partition (D: ), the OS will be installed on (C: ). What I don't know is if this voids your warranty though. =/ -
What is the latest working NVIDIA drivers?
I have through everything from 260.99 to the latest 275... NOTHING WORKS SO FAR.
I get the thing where it freezes, when it enters Windows 7 login screen. -
Is this the CPU heating to 95C? That's the temperature at which an i3 starts to throttle. It goes into thermal shutdown at 130C. Anything 95C and below will not damage it, as it is made to run that temp.
I'm guessing you've either got a bad motherboard or a bad windows install.
When you return it be sure and clearly describe the problem, especially the part about it freezing and stuttering, not the overheating.
My core i5 460M runs at 95C to 99C all day when gaming. No stuttering, no blue screens, no crashes, just great gaming with a pretty warm laptop even with a cooling pad.
When it's overheating are you playing games or doing other intensive stuff or is it just at idle? If it's getting to 95C at idle then yeah, there's something VERY wrong with it. If you've got to run it hard to get to 95C then that's fairly normal for an i3.
Have you used something like HWMonitor to see if your CPU is being throttled and that's causing the stuttering? -
Definitely does not sound like a sound card issue. Personally it sounds like your CPU is extremely taxed periodically. Perhaps you should find out why.
-
I am using the latest NVidia driver (275.33) and latest Intel driver (8.15.10.2361) and both work perfectly. Had heard of possible battery impact but I have always stayed 'current' with my drivers and have not ever noticed any problems or negative impact on performance or battery life
Pretty unlikely your NVidia is the problem... it should not be active at Windows 7 login screen as the Optimus should have only the intel active at that time. -
What BIOS version are you running?
-
Yes, I've reinstalled the OS myself. I even did it a second time with a clean Win7 install. And I updated to the new BIOS. It didn't make any difference.
It can't be the heat directly causing the blue screens, because it bluescreens while idling sometimes. And the fact that it still bluescreened after both Win7 installs I performed should show it's not a driver problem. I sent it to Asus for repair and they completely replaced the motherboard and put a new fan on the laptop. The heat still reached into the 90's and the stuttering happens WAY MORE OFTEN. It was happening about once a minute. It wasn't anywhere near that bad.
Before, the stuttering rarely happened but when it did it would mean the laptop was about to either bluescreen or freeze. This time it was stuttering every minute but not freezing. I sent it back a second time after this and they performed tests "at high tolerance levels" and concluded the laptop does not overheat. And he's sending it back without fixing anything, AGAIN.
The CPU, Motherboard, and Video Card were all showing 90C+ temperatures. The hard drive was above 65C. In the quote above I talk about how the first time I sent it back they completely replaced the motherboard and the laptop was actually worse from stuttering.
It overheats while watching a video (even low quality video, not HD) and while gaming. However, it's not intensive gaming. I would play WoW on the lowest possible settings to keep the temps down as low as possible and it would still hit ~85C. If I turned them up to as high as the laptop *should* be able to handle at a decent framerate, it will bluescreen within 10 minutes.
I actually printed out a screenshot of the CPU and motherboard at 100C and 101C respectively and sent it with the laptop for the second repair, which as I say above they didn't do anything about.
I'm probably going to have to send it to them a THIRD time. This will be like 8 or 9 weeks without my laptop. I'm getting soooo sick of this.
Also I'd like to point out that this post:
sounds just like the problem I have with my laptop stuttering, except it doesn't happen on just videos or music. It happens during anything. It probably happens to him too, it's just not nearly as noticeable without sound playing. You can hear when the computer stutters really well during a song/video because it "catches" for a second or two, sometimes longer. -
Running 208. I have been an 'early upgrader' on most software updates... including the latest touchpad drivers (beyond those specifically for the U35JC) and Power4Gear... first issue I have had is with the absolute latest touchpad drivers... they did not work... everything else has worked great.
-
Stupid me was running BIOS 207. Updated the bios and now there is no problem at all.
Thanks for your replies!
Other questions, has anyone in here tried this cover and wrist rest for the U35JC?
Carbon Cover: http://www.sgpstore.com/laptop/sgp-asus-u35jc-skin-guard-set-series.html
Wrist Rest: http://www.sgpstore.com/laptop/sgp-asus-u35jc-wristrest.html -
the carbon cover looks nice. but not the wrist rest.

Power input (DC jack) + heating trouble
Had my U35JC for 11 months now. The DC Jack is loose and the power cord has to be twisted in a very specific way for it to charge. I'm outside of warrantee because I bought it outside of my home country.
Any idea where to buy a DC Jack where I can solder it back on? What is the part number? Anyone else having any DC Jack wobbles?
The best matching part I can find is: http://www.asusparts.eu/product_info.php?cPath=2450_81059&products_id=40771
Otherwise, it's been overheating lately. On taking it apart, I found and removed a load of dust between heatsink and fan. There are also vents which I uncovered by removing tape. This has helped overheating greatly.
Thanks -
After 11 wonderful months my U35jc died on me yesterday just like that.
I never had any problems with it, in fact I was really really happy with it. But yesterday I turned it on to make some C# programs for a class and after a few minutes it turned itself off and that was it. The end.
-
Does anybody know if the Crucial M4 SSD 64 gb is supported by the Asus U35JC-A1?
-
I really regret buying this laptop.
I've had it since September of 2010 and since then i've had to RMA it over 4 times.
First time was because of a loud fan noise.
Second time was because the fan noise returned after a good 3 months.
The third and fourth time happened recently within the past two months. The third time i sent it in, I noticed that there was a hibernation issue that would occur as i am typing. And realizing that it had to be a hardware issue sent it in for repair, only to get it returned after ASUS found nothing wrong with it.
Almost immediately upon receiving the laptop, i power it up to find the same hibernation issue while web surfing.
I just got my laptop back two days ago telling them, that it had to be a hardware issue that occurs when typing and they replaced my casing and my motherboard. And now although the system doesnt spontaneously hibernate as often as it did before it does happen but very rarely. I'm debating on whether or not I should RMA yet another time because of this.
I also notice now that i cant update to the latest drivers for nvidia and after installing the driver, i'm forced to go into safemode and restore.
Sigh i wish i never bought this laptop, its been nothing but trouble. If only ASUS would give me a refund. -
Not that you wanna hear it since you got a lemon, but I got mine in Sep 10 also and it has been a rock solid computer... have dragged it all over the world and (knock on wood) not a single issue. Fan is nearly silent and no issues with hyberation. I definitely get the 'high pitch' from the CPU but very rarely notice it in quiet rooms, and only with certain programs. Based on the Accidental Damage Waiver for the first year, I would figure they would definitely give you a replacement... good luck

Hi David,
Maybe I can help you
Right now it's 5:00 am where I live but the stuttering sound coming out from my U35JC was driving me completely crazy so I decided to spend the night fixing this.
I'll explain a little bit about my situation with this computer, I got the computer around February it came with the 208 Bios version, which I know it's the latest since then I've been having the sound stuttering issue but I didn't care to much at that moment until I started working a lot in the notebook it came to the point where I was listening a stuttering for around 1 or 2 seconds in a random way weird thing this only happened when I was listening Mp3 music, everything else was working fine.
So I decided to perform a clean install same issue.
Changing the Super Hybrid Engine modes same issue.
No overheat issues I even used Prime95 to check for hardware issues and nothing.
Checked on Linux and no stuttering present.
Then I decided to search for the issue on Google and I have found out lots of people having issues in many different scenarios with many different computers at this point started to freak out honestly.
Then I downloaded a tool called DPC Latency Checker, search for it on google and install it.
Then I saw the behaviour on the computer, when I was listening an Mp3 suddenly Latency Checker registered a high peak in readings.
Decided to remove the Realtek driver that came with the computer and no more stuttering the notebook installed a default driver given by Windows 7 but I wanted the original driver working so I downloaded the latest driver in the Asus website which shows the same behaviour in readings and the stuttering came back.
Took a deep breath and decided to download a newer driver for the Realtek audio card a higher version from Asus, since there are no newer versions for the U35JC I decided to download the one for the U36SD the newer model, both computers share many components that's why I decided to install it, and my problem is solved, no more stuttering I finally can listen my music properly.
After this I used again DPC Latency Checker to check on the laptop behaviour and I still see some readings I don't like but definitely the reading is lower and it's not causing stuttering anymore, that the one I was having before with the old driver and my main issue was solved.
Many people in forums claim the stuttering is related with Nvidia, Realtek Network card or Super Hybrid Engine but honestly I don't know if anyone has any news on this.
By far this has been my only issue with his notebook, about the whine noise coming out from the notebook I had no idea until I read about it on the forums or probably I'm deaf because I can barely hear it so it's not a problem for me.
Regards
Update: The stuttering came back even using the newer driver for the U36SD at this point I have no idea what to do since this thing is happening random, anyone knows anything about this? when I´m using DPC Latency Checker I see the peaks suddenly happening and the sound stutters by consecuence, damn it.
I'll try removing the driver again and using the Windows 7 default driver, and see what happens. -
Same deal here man. I sent it back 3 times because my laptop freezes and bluescreens constantly and they CLAIM nothing is wrong with it and they performed their ty stress tests. (They probably opened paint 10 times to see if it lagged)
I regret getting this laptop so much that I'm NEVER buying ANY Asus product again.
It's nothing to do with drivers. It's just the laptop being a piece of crap. Personally I have a hunch that it might be the wireless adapter since it IS so crappy. Does your wifi randomly disconnect while using your laptop also?
Also I installed a completely clean version of Windows (Not an OEM Asus version, a CLEAN version) and the first thing I would do is install Flash Player and play a youtube video and it would stutter like crazy.
As I said to the guy above I constantly had to send my laptop back to Asus because it would freeze and bluescreen. When it froze, it would freeze ON a stutter. Stuttering was a warning sign that my laptop was about to freeze. It would happen a few times, and then the stutter would finally stick and last like 15 minutes before I had to hard reset the laptop. -
hey guys i'm experiencing a strange issue with my u35jc-a1. I've noticed that my laptop freezes sometimes when listening to music (mp3+foobar) or when streeming live video with sopcast. here is what happens: everything runs smoothly and suddenly the sound becomes wiered - it is making a strange noise and the mp3 audio or sopcast audio is gone. Sometimes it stays 3-4 seconds that way and after that everything goes to normal, but sometimes the laptop freezes and only reboot fixes the problem.
any ideas? -
Yeah, you got suckered into buying an awful laptop like the rest of us. Don't buy Asus ever again, I know I won't.
-
I guess I'm not the only one. That makes me feel a bit better. I called Asus about this problem and they asked me to reinstall the video/audio card drivers, didn't help. and then they told me to do system recovery, I reformatted my computer, problem is still there. It doesn't happen too often, but when it happens, it sure is very annoying.
It's weird cuz first few months the computer never did something like this. So I'm suspecting that there must be some updates that are not compatible to something on this computer... but of course we have no clue what it is. And Asus probably won't deal with it much -
hey david could you please describe your problem more detailed, i am trying to collect more info. I was thinking to install win7 32 or vista to check if this would solve the problem. Did you eventually tried that already?
-
My problem is pretty much exactly the same as yours, if not worse. Mostly when I stream online videos (i.e. on Youtube), but also listening to music, out of no where the computer will just freeze, and then the distorted, extreme slow-mo sound; usually after 20-30 seconds it will just be back to normal, but sometimes it takes up to 1 minute.
At first I thought it's over-heating causing the problem, but then I realized the problem happens even when my GPU/CPU are not hot at all.
Things I've tried: using different P4G settings, reinstall video/audio card drivers, upgrading and trying lower versions for the drivers, format the whole computer, etc.
I have not tried installing win7 32 or vista though. Please do let me know if you found the solution to this problem, so I won't have to RMA it.. -
I sent my laptop for reparations and they say they couldn't repair it because it had some liquid that voided the warranty. I don't know what kind of liquid they are talking about because I have never spilled anything on it and then they said they could repair it for like $700 and I was like: are you people out of your mind? I bought this laptop for like the exact same price! And told them to send it back and look at this: http://i377.photobucket.com/albums/...00759622204_726552203_8507431_992449484_n.jpg
Even the screen is broken and it has lots of missing screws and I sent this laptop looking like new! I was thinking about sending the computer to a friend that works repairing laptops and stuff but what's the point of repairing this mess? Man I'm so angry right now... -
Wow man I'm sorry to hear that. That really sucks. Try complaining to them and tell them you sent it not looking like that, and they ruined it. *Hopefully* you'll get something out of it. Say you want to speak to their boss or someone if you have to.
Also don't ever buy form Asus again. I won't be. -
Sux you guys got lemons. I have had mine since the day it came out and it has performed perfectly... been in some pretty hostile environments too... best laptop I have bought in years. Third Asus laptop (and I have built 5 desktops w/Asus stuff) and never had a problem with any... maybe just lucky. Point is it is probably your exact CPU (ie. you got a bad one) and not the model/ manufacturer... or it is a software conflict as mentioned above. Have you tried the F9 restore? Best to NOT do a 'clean' install and instead try a factory install (F9) if you want to check for a software/driver conflict. If you wiped the HD to save space and didn't burn DVDs, you may not be able to do a factory install. Also, assuming you sent in your warranty card, it is a 2-year Accidental Damage Warranty... meaning whatever happens, accidentally drop down a flight of stairs... send it in and get a new laptop. If you bought second hand or don't have your receipt (or didn't register) you are probably screwed... but otherwise send in under the ADW and you should get a replacement machine.
-
I installed a completely clean copy of Windows, not an OEM version, and it still had problems. It's not a software issue.
Also I bought it brand new, and I had the Accidental Damage Warranty. I believe it's only 1 year and it has just passed. They weren't going to replace my laptop anyway. I explicitly stated I believe the processor was faulty in a letter the last time I sent my laptop, and they actually had a senior manager personally email me CLAIMING he "thoroughly inspected" the CPU to see if it was damaged and found no problems. (Which is absolute bull, you wouldn't be able to find it by looking anyway)
Even if I did drop my laptop down stairs and spill some water on it, they make you send the broken laptop back and they reuse any parts they can. They would reuse the processor for sure, unless I was able to make SURE it got physically damaged in some way, but for that to happen I would either have to completely open my laptop, and then they'd know and void the warranty, or if I could somehow do it without opening it they would somehow claim I did something and wouldn't replace it anyway. -
Longtime reader of this thread, good info. One thing I can no find anywhere else including support and this is one question that's been mauled over a thousand thousand times. Getting the nvidia to strictly perform for a game instead of switching around with the Intel trash. Specifically playing the new game "From Dust". It just WILL NOT play past the intro logo. It crashes and my suspicion is from it switching and not using the nvidia yet or at all. It's so bothersome I'm looking to sell this laptop, (u35jc). I loved it up to this point. Ive tried 7 different drivers, custom infs, verde, uninstalling everything, messing in bios, for three days now. Amazing, optimus is just a failure ? Assigning the dGPU in nvidia panel is a joke, it will use what ever it wants. We need a manual coded override. Anyone have this issue with this game ? I have been able to get most apps and games working for almost a year rooting out the origin program it uses and assigning dGPU, etc. This is the first major dead end
-
For what its worth, and you likely realize this, but the issue with the Optimus allowing the GPU with a program is actually an NVidia issue and not Asus... not sure about 'From Dust' but most of the time I find that the NVidia driver updates fix programs that have issues... pretty sure you can send in a compatibility request and they will work for compatibility in the next driver update for the M310/Optimus. Side note: on Amazon, this game says specifically that laptop GPUs are not supported... so sounds like it is the game producer that is causing the pain!
-
Haven't been to these boards in a long time but what you guys are describing sounds an awful lot like the problem I had with my U35JC.
Every so often it would freeze up for a 2 second interval and if any music was playing in the background the sudden "squeaking" would sound just horrible.
I finally used latency analysis programs ( Resplendence Software - LatencyMon: suitability checker for real-time audio and other tasks in particular) and let it run when the problem manifested, it showed that the cause was actually in the wifi drivers and once I downgraded it to an earlier driver (taken from Asus' website) the problem was fixed... -
The problem seems to be fixed after REALTEK audio driver update. I'm now using
Realtek High-Definition Audio Driver 2.33 (or 2.34) - i'll check that later, but the current version now is 2.37.
Maybe you could give it a try
-
Can a SSD owner confirm, that the drive runs successfuly in SATA2 mode?
-
so a SATA3 ssd is not worth investing for this laptop (u35jc)... but what about SATA2? does the slot support SATA2 speeds?
-
What nvidia drivers are people running these days?
-
Can anyone suggest what is the deal with the "Super Hybrid Engine" gadget?
If I switch it to "on", the laptop immediately hibernates and when I awaken it, the gadget is on "off" again. -
Hi,
Pls check my inline replies.. -
Hi I was wondering if anyone still uses this laptop? Mine is still running strong after 2.5 years for the most part. It occasionally freezes for no reason (the mouse cursor doesn't even move) usually when I am opening webpages in multiple tabs. I also get that terrible sound when I play youtube videos. I don't mind these 2 things but one thing that does bother me is the heat. It gets very hot when I run Starcraft 2 on low settings. The game runs perfectly but the laptop just gets very hot. Do I need to replace the fan or something?
-
Anyone use Windows 8? Will it work?
-
I still use my U45JC-A1 every day. Mine occasionally freezes as well, but I noticed it comes back after about 30 seconds or so. I'm not familiar with your sound issue during Youtube, however, I am familiar with the CPU whine that is present during idle and I found online that a fix is to prevent the CPU from entering the deepest idle state by leavining the microphone on at all times ("Listen to this Device" in the audio properties) and muting the device at the same time. This might be the echo or strange noise you're hearing.
I rarely play a little Counter-strike on the machine and it does get warm. I would imagine with the age of our laptops, popping the keyboard off and giving the internals a good spritz of compressed air wouldn't be a bad idea. I did that a couple weeks ago, but again, I don't play enough games or anything to notice any major differences.
Glad to hear there's another U45 out there still going strong!
