Interesting how the UL30VT-A1 was available yesterday on newegg for 650 bucks, now it's gone. I still think its coming late this month.

    for 650 bucks?
    Are you serious?

I would have jumped on that, just as an extra notebook.

I only see the UL30A version available for that price. You sure you didn't misread yesterday? If it was true, then darn it!

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220632&cm_re=ul30a-_-34-220-632-_-Product

It looks like a great deal for a 2 year /1 year accidental warranty. I might pull the trigger on that or getting the UL30VT for $760 after bing cashback on ebay.

If the 850 Euro price stated in a an earlier post is correct, then the JT will probably debut at a considerably higher price.

For $650 the A1 is highway robbery.

I would have bought at least 2 instantly.

Check this out, is it freakin raining outside so am on my pc snooping around for ul30jt updates and I decide to go to the Asus FTP page where you download files straight from the source. And guess what I find which wasnt there last week, a UL30J folder. It was posted for the first time on 3/12. This is great news. I think we are extremely close. Go see for your self:

    ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/nb/UL30J/

It is even now listed on the Asus Support Page:

    http://support.asus.com/search/search.aspx?keyword=ul30j&SLanguage=en-us

I'm looking forward to seeing the 310m with the i7-640um, as the additional processor power should yield better video performance: the 310m should scale with an increase processor power -- it does with the ul80vt w/ gf210m (turbo33 vs normal).

Also, I'm interested to see the effect that an overclocked GPU will have. If you read about overclocking the ul80vt gf210m here, you can see that there's quite a bump in gf210m performance for an arguably easy hack. Together the significantly faster i7 (especially with turbo enabled) and the slightly faster gf310m that's overclocked, I would bet that this lappy would be quite powerful for ultra-portable gaming. I'm throwing a guess out here, but I'd wager 4500-5000 3dmark06 (the current overclocked ul80vt gets ~4000 3dmark06 -- 500 points higher than stock benchmarks).

I think the ul30jt is well worth the wait...

    }:^)~

so i've been lurking this thread since back in its single-digit page count days, checking it every two days to see if any new info's been posted. So before I git to gittin' on with it, I want to say thanks to all you loyal and passionate people out there feeding my techie addiction.. I truly appreciate the legwork you guys do in the name of information. information, truly, is king...

I've finally decided to jump into the fray.

First, an observation: I believe we actually may not see this machine until we have firm specs on the MBP refresh. 13" form factor, 2010 core LV chips, optimus, hell even brushed aluminum... all are expected (nay, demanded) by most things i've read about the upcoming MBP (though of course, those things are all speculation as well). I think ASUS is toying with apple a lil and trying to position itself for a little one-ups-manship with Cupertino..

Second, a question: The placards on the JT all still claim the ASUS turbo33 technology... will this be in addition to the intel's turbo boost? I know the intel turbo boost shuts down one core to run the second at the higher freq. I do not know how the OC from ASUS works. Will they be able to work in tandem or will one be defeated for the needs of the other? If the turbo33 exists in nomenclature only, then the only thing in it for me to wait for this unit is optimus and more matte surfaces....

i.e., not worth the wait, especially if we're waiting for apple to announce it's new digs, then on ASUS to refresh, announce, release, and ship the JT..

As I understand it, the turbo33 is a factory overclock and not to be confused with the i7 'turbo' mode, though overclocking may be different compared to an older C2D.

This link shows that a desktop i7 can be overclocked quite well:
    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/overclocking-core-i7,2063.html

Anyone with actual experience care to weigh in?

Not real likely that it will take that long to see the UL30JT. First, no one is sure when the MBP is coming out--could be soon, could be June. Second, the JT is already a real product with known components. Significant changes to the specs we've seen are not likely. The only reason I see them waiting is the see the prices the other companies like Acer put up and then respond to their pricing.

I don't think Asus (or any successful company) waits and sees what the competition offers at whatever prices. That's just bad business and marketing. That's what their in-house R&D and marketing teams are for. They research and predict their competition as well as consumer wants / demands.

They can't play the waiting game or else they will lose out on potential market share.

Plus, if they wanted to offer their laptops at a lower price than the competition, they would just lower it... plain and simple.

I suspect the delay from Asus is simply because they have not yet finalized a production model for the UL30JT.

btw. someobdy should try if the jt could be hackintosched...some tough for apple if it is possible :D

I think its Intel's fault that we aren't seeing the UL30JT. The Macbook Air is due for a refresh and I'm pretty sure they'll go with i7 ULV chips. Intel will fill the demand for apple before other companies for some unknown reason, but perhaps Asus doesn't have enough stock to put it out on the market yet.

The 13 inch model laptop on that Manual looks more like the PL30JT, from the looks of the track pad. More specifically, the Left and Right mouse buttons. Its not just one single button like on the UL30JT.

Nah. The graphics card would help improve performance of your computer, even if you aren't playing games. 1gb of ram dedicated for video instead of sharing it with the system ram definitely helps. It'll also help with some certain apps(gpu accelerated).

we need to keep in mind on how much the ulv i7 are going to cost.

    My theory being/hoping:
They will keep the ul30vt because why come out with the a1 if you are just going to replace it.
Then they will release the ul30jq as a higher end model around $999.
    --

The ul30vt is still a great laptop, if you need a laptop I would go for the ul30vt.

Hell didn't diablo 2 come out like a year late, or think of duke nukem...

Why wait for something that doesnt exist yet or take something you can have.

    Just my 2 pennys.

I hope the UL30Jt makes it to the UK shortly after its release... the UL30Vt didn't make it in the UK (or the rest of Europe, AFAIK), so I'm still keeping my old laptop alive after 4+ years!

Asus seem to be pretty crap getting their models to the market place. I used to think the ASUS -> Distributor -> Reseller network was a good idea but the problem is the Distributor in most cases seems to be too conservative (when ordering from Asus) hence making it hard or impossible for consumers to source the model they actually want.

I've actually talked to a distributor:

"Why don't you have model xyz?"

Response: "No one wants that model here."

    :(

The Acer won't have auto-switching (ATI hasn't announced anything, atleast)... which is honestly going to be much more common place. So in a way it's already obsolete. Besdies, the 12hr estimate is probably with the larger battery, and weakest CPU, wireless off, bluetooth off, etc. etc.

By auto switching, I think you mean 'Optimus', which switches based on the applications running.

I know I'd much rather switch manually. Gives more control over battery life, rather than a background application which has eaten up all the battery life.

I don't know why there's all this talk about the "UL30JT Killer" when this thing hasn't been born yet. This is basically technological abortion and besides, that $1,600 price tag has yet to be compared to the JT's price
