It sounds quite expensive, similar or even more expensive than a UL30VT plus a SSD.

No these prices came from the polish ASUS Facebook profile. The user just converted the prices to Euro. There is no what so ever VAT, Tax or so either included or excluded. It's just a plain currency convertion.
-
In Europe we always include tax in the price. That price will definitely include the normal European 22% tax.
-
Awesome! For once, it's cool to be American! -
plus 9.25% California sales tax,
plus 5% to 9% CA income tax,
plus property taxes,
plus auto taxes,
plus, plus, plus. -
So you should be happy to live there.
(e.g. the UL30VT at Amazon 6-700USD, in Hungary its 970 USD at the cheapest place, while the average income is around 750-800 USD.) -
.
When you compare the US to Europe, we pay significantly less taxes. California does have unusually high sales and income taxes (the state income taxes are deducted from the federal taxes though). Jersey is only 2% income. 7% sales. Property taxes are the real killer here on the east coast. (also lower in Idaho i hear) Still, we have higher home ownnership rates than Europe so we must still be doing something right (they were higher even before we started selling crappy mortgage backed securities in massive Ponzi schemes).
You also happen to live in one of the most desirable spots in the world to live. There is a cost to that - no?
Bronsky -
In Denmark the income taxes are between 50-60%
The Auto Taxes are 180%!!!!! when you buy a new car.
The sales taxes are 25%
And the cheapest Ul30vt you can buy on sale cost around 900$ -
Those of you still hoping that the UL30JT may be released sometime soon, new NVIDIA drivers for the Asus Optimus notebooks have been released. Although the N82Jv is on there (not in full release yet) and the U30Jc is on there, there is no UL30JT listed. (look under supported products)
http://www.nvidia.com/object/optimus_win7_x32_notebook_189.42.html
I don't think this bodes well for the UL30JT.
Bronsky -
Bronsky: those "new" drivers are from about a month ago so I really don't see how this sheds any new light on things...
On the other hand:
The U30JC-A1 is now available for Pre-Order on Amazon, advertising "Up to 9.5 hours of battery life"

Maybe those taxes go for something besides failing schools with inedible food and propagandistic textbooks, astronomical higher education costs (look at Law), thoroughly crooked politicians, unnecessary wars, Wall Street/banking swindlers, a hopelessly bad health care system, and a bloated military budget?
And, more importantly, a nation that exercises fiscal discipline like Norway isn't living on borrowed time like the USA is. The country is being eaten away from the inside out. Exportation of labor (even Law grads with huge student loan debt get to see all the low-medium level work done in India now). Depressed wages for those still employed (retaining female workers and making men stay at home). Low-quality goods (Wal-Mart) coupled with planned obsolescence speeding up more and more. False "value"/"low prices" that sucker people into paying more than they should.
A huge portion of our taxes go to wasteful pork like fighter jets that are never used. And, we end up paying for "low" taxes in other ways.
Partisan bickering and a purposefully poorly educated population (look at the new Texas textbooks), coupled with nationalistic brainwashing ("The USA is the best country on Earth!") have enabled this but now the corruption is a lot more obvious because of blogging.
The USA is one of the best places to live if you're rich. Most billionaires increased their fortunes during the global financial crisis according to Forbes. But, if you're rich, there are a lot of places to live comfortably.

On the otherhand, Asus is ranked lowest in failure rates among the top 9 brands, having better reliability even compared against premium brands such as Sony, Apple, and Lenovo.
Check the report below:
http://www.squaretrade.com/htm/pdf/SquareTrade_laptop_reliability_1109.pdf
In short, you have to weigh in reliability and build quality when making purchasing decisions. Anyways, as Spawn782 mentioned, strictly performance wise, the i3 should outperform the i7 culv processors. My money is with Asus. What use is it if I get a $1000 laptop that has a 1 in 4 chances of failing? -
Justin_Ayers et al. Let's keep the discussion to computers, not politics. God knows, I love to talk politics, but if we go down that road on this forum this thread will cease to be helpful for what people are coming here to find out.
So, let's all agree to disagree about political issues and agree to desire the most powerful laptop for the best price! -
-
I agree with all your points, but a huffpo link is often not well received by Repubicans for obvious reasons!
I'd say let's cut out the political chit-chat lest it evolve into an ugly mud-slinging match! -
Asus is really getting screwed by Intel and the failure of the low power I-Cores to perform. Instead of marketing the UL30JT to compete with the new Timelines X's, Asus has to rely on the U30Jc. The U30Jc weights 5 lbs, has an I3-350M, 5400 rpm HD, Max Ram = 4GB and no BT. IMHO, this machine is not in the same league as the Timeline X's.
-
The weight, GPU and battery life are the biggest differentiators between them. The U30JC is a nice laptop, but it needs to be around the $700 mark.

Just wondering, does the Acer have similar build qualities and warranty as ASUS's?
-
Acer's international warranty only covers "bona fide" travellers, and their standard local warranty is only 1 year, vs ASUS' free 1-year accidental damage warranty, and 2 years of proper international coverage.
As for build quality, it's not really possible to judge that for laptops that aren't available yet. Acer makes a lot of cheap laptops that aren't too great on build quality, but their Timeline series seems to be a cut above, and so I'd expect (and this seems to be confirmed by the previews I've seen) the TimelineX laptops to be well built, probably comparable to ASUS' UL series. -
It wouldn't be bad if it had max 8GB RAM... :/
I have to buy a notebook in a 2 months, but I'm looking for sth with good battery life, international warranty, RAM expandable to 8GB and decent computing power (for a small notebook ofx; one of i processors would be perfect). Do you know any notebook that would have all of these? I've been counting on UL30JT or JC, but now I don't really now what to buy
-
I'm pretty sure the U30JC has 2 SO-DIMM slots and hence would be able to have 8GB of RAM. XoticPC offers 8GB in their configuration options, for one.
-
-
Amazon says "(2GB x 2 slots)", so I don't see why you wouldn't be able to put 4GB x 2 in yourself.
-
It says "# Memory: 4GB DDR3-1066 DRAM (up to 4GB) ", so probably there are some motherboard limitations
-
I don't see why the motherboard would allow 2GB sticks and not 4GB sticks. I think the 4GB max is most likely an error by Amazon, especially considering XoticPC is offering 8GB configurations.
-
Long story short, the UL30 series can handle 8gb of RAM. -
-
Wow! Word from GenTech is that the "UL30JT should be here anytime this week". I show now go and confirm that..
-
I'm waiting UL30JT to show up here.

Many of us are also following the ~Acer~Timeline~Arrandale thread here.
Seems like someone in China has posted some extensive testing and photos of
the new Acer 4820TG i7m-620 with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650.
This is the 14" version of the 13" Acer 3820TG, which should have similar performance.
(thanks to lee_what2004)
Takes some time to load due to all the photos,
but be sure to check out the spectacular performance.
Use Google Translate if desired. -
When you follow the Asus link, however, there is no PL30JT listed.
I am now officially confused. -
-
With a 9 cell, it looks like the Acer TimelineX models will be getting 12 hours or so (they've been tested at 8 hours with a 6 cell) and that's with full powered dual-core Arrandale.
Mind you, I suspect Acer is probably downclocking aggressively to get that level of battery life. -
http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=LXkdJbGNlUNZJ1lu
This is what i am getting.
Too bad about the 4gb - but the rest is pretty.
~~DukeP~~ -
-
It probably comes with 4GB. I think his problem is that the official spec says "2 x SODIMM socket for expansion up to 4GB SDRAM" implying that 4GB is the maximum. However:
-
-
I am expecting to be able to purchase it come the first of may.
I will be needing it then.

I just read the review about the Asus ul30jt and I must say i'm really anxious to see how its going to be priced here in Belgium. According to notebookchecks review the price is 899dollars, which is 660, but i'd be very very glad if the price would be 800 or less.
This laptop has everything I want: a strong cpu, and still a strong battery life (the vostro 3300 got my attention for a while but it has a 4 cell battery, I doubt it will last longer than 3 hours). The optical drive AND the gt310m are things I never imagined to be under the 1000 price range for a 13 inch laptop.
So, fingers crossed on the pricing ^^ -
-
Don't you mean the U30JC? (EDIT: Haha, too late).
Also, the Acer TimelineX series looks to be better still for battery life, with ~8 hours. -
