From what I've seen, the difference in CPU power is actually quite large - with Turbo33 and Turbo Boost, I'd expect the UL30JT to be similar to the U30JC in CPU power. However, the graphics not being a boost was to be expected all along if you looked at the specs.
-
-
Ill prolly just wait for this then and see the price and how it compares the the U30JC then. Thanks
-
Same here actually.. I was hoping to get PL30JT... but after reading through all the stuff, just ended up ordering VT-A1 yesterday.. only cost me $900 delivered to Australia.. can't go wrong with that and hopefully overclocked SU7300 will do the job. I couldn't justify spending an extra $500 right this moment for a JT...
-
Oh. Sorry. I thought he & you were talking about CPUID:
My eye caught the "CPUID" part & not the "HW Monitor" part. I'll try it & see, though I doubt I'll do better then you.
UPDATE: Okay, got it to work. Oddly enough, NOT from the CPUID site, but from Windows 7 download site:
http://www.windows7download.com/win7-hwmonitor-64-bit-/download-hvqbfppb.html
Direct Link
http://www.windows7download.com/win7-hwmonitor-64-bit-/download-hvqbfppb.html
The 1.15 version did NOT work, not matter the bit version, as you experienced. But the link above SAYS it will download the 1.15 64-bit ver, but it actually downloads the 1.14 64-bit version which opens normally for me.
Give that a try & see if it works for you. -
Thanks for the benchmarks, however could you please post the CPU Benchmark with....
Turbo33 Off, Turbo Boost Off, Nvidia GeForce Off
I am trying to compare the Cpu Benchmark this with a "Regular UL30" with SU7300
Thanks a lot in Anticipation... -
i am ordering my ul30vt as well
-
Agree!, I emailed Asus.co.nz about the release day of PL30jt in NZ ( ASUSTeK Computer Inc.)
and they Replied
The PL30JT is looking to be released in New Zealand in Q3 2010 (July-September inclusive), that is the plan which may change in the future.
still need to wait for more than 2 months +

The thing is that I can't turn the Turbo Boost off
There is no option for it in Windows' Power Options or in Power4Gear and not even in the BIOS. If I turn Power4Gear's processor control to moderate battery saving, it turns off the Turbo Boost but the CPU will run only at 7x133 (8x133 should be the default).

If it would be my notebook I would use it most of the time (or always) with Turbo33 on. When I need to save battery I just switch to moderate battery saving. 9xx MHz is just too low, but I can live with 12xx MHz.
Right now the notebook is charging from 0%, Turbo33 on, Turbo Boost 'off'. So the question is, how should I test the battery life after all this? IMHO it's not a real life test if I turn the Turbo33 off. -
Hi til.
I think it would be easier for us if we turned those test shots into summarized & ordered base numbers rather than "* ON, * OFF". Like this.
PassMark Performance Test 7.0
CPU Mark:
UL30Jt
0.93GHz: 990 (T33 OFF, TB OFF)
1.24GHz: 1,253 (T33 ON, TB OFF)
1.86GHz: 1,657 (T33 OFF, TB ON)
2.48GHz: 2,208 (T33 ON, TB ON) ONE core only
U30Jc
2.26GHz: 2,387
UL30Vt
1.30GHz: 1,157
1.76GHz: 1,457
*** BTW, I would have thought you'd have a 2.14GHz test in there somewhere. Perhaps that's the 2.48GHz test running on ONE core, but would be 2.14GHz on TWO cores? -
There's a lot of info in his post. That processor turned out better then I thought! I bet it OC's well too with low temps, setFSB would probably rock it if someone was inclined.
(and sorry, I realize this is the JT thread but)
Do you have time to run this test Quatro on your JC? If not, I'll try downloading and doing it this weekend. I'm kinda curious what ours is compared to this in the different modes. -
HI til...
thanks for posting the benchmarks.... !!!
So... Benchmarks Scores....
Stock SU7300 = 991 Battery Life = 10 hrs
Turbo 33 = ??? Battery Life = 10 hrs
Core i5 520UM
0.93GHz = 990 Battery Life = ???
1.24GHz = 1,253 Battery Life = ???
1.86GHz = 1,657 Battery Life = ???
2.48GHz = 2,208 Battery Life = ???
Gentlemen......
What would you get.... VT or JT....?!? & Why...?!? -
In a nutshell:
CPU Mark:
U30Jc
2.26GHz: 2,387
UL30Vt
1.30GHz: 1,157
1.76GHz: 1,457
Did you also want the break-down scores of the other various CPU-based tests?
Does anyone have the PassMark CPU scores for the UL30Vt or UL80Vt in both stock, TurboBoost & Turbo33 modes? ... just found it in UL30Vt Owner's Lounge.
I've updated the previous page's table as well. -
It's 2,12 GHz when the test program uses both cores. It seems like PassMark use one core only.
-
I'm currently not waiting for the jt, but the acer timeline X 1830 which will use the same CPUs. Does the battery life really that much suck for the new i5um, or is it just my impression?
-
I am in the same boat Razor....
trying to decide whether to get 1810/UL30VT or wait for 1830/UL30JT depending on the Benchmark Scores and the Battery life of the UL30JT review done here by the very helpful member..... "til".
Which side you leaning....???
til....
1. Could you kindly do a battery life test with Turbo Boost ON & Turbo33 OFF.
2. After you have now tested & spent some time with the JT what is your personal decision...??? YOu getting the VT or waiting for JT..... & Why...???
Thanks a lot Pal... You have been really Helpful to a lot of people here...!!!
-
Both have their pros and cons:
1810 - ie. current CULV
- cheap
- its fast enough for my needs
- loooong battery life
- its essentially 2006 tech
1830 - ie. i5 CULV
- much more power
- Intel HD GPU is much better
- seems very expensive
- questionable battery life
- not available yet
To sum it up, if the battery life is lower on the new i5, I'm leaning to the 1810. -
Actually, the I3-330UM Travelmate version is available for preorder on a US site.
PROVANTAGE: Acer LX.TWN03.006 COREI3-330UMMOBILEPRO/2G/250G/11.6/WIN7
$633.

Does the CORE i3-330UM even exist...??!?

1. I will, please be patient. I still think Turbo33 on and Turbo Boost off would be a better, more real life test but its ok for me to do the opposite. My problem with Turbo Boost is when you turn it on, the cpu will run on higher speeds even if you open the my computer or a browser or just watching a web page with flash on it. Basically every app will trigger the Turbo Boost to run on higher speeds. IMHO Turbo Boost is for gaming, not for every day use like browsing, music, etc.
2. I think the UL30Jt is good, but not good enough. The CPU is faster than the SU7300 but really, who cares? The GPU is not powerful enough for this CPU so what is the faster CPU for? What will you do with it? If you are doing CPU-heavy scientific calculations (on the go
) which doesn't require the GPU, then UL30Jt is good for you. If you play games, forget it.
Even if the UL30Jt would be as fast as UL30Vt or maybe it would be a little bit faster than it - lets say with 2-300 points in 3DMark - then I still wouldn't recommend it. It's just not worth it, the UL30Vt is cheaper, lighter, it have better battery life, and it's already proved. At least you will know exactly when the Nvidia GPU is in use...
My girlfriend wants a new notebook and I recommended the UL30Vt to her but she wants a DVD burner so she will buy an UL80Vt instead. I will sell my notebook in a month, and I will buy an UL30Vt for myself. By the way I reviewed the UL30Jt because I wasn't able to decide between this and the UL30Vt. For me, the UL30Vt is the winner.
Of course it's just my opinion.
One more thing. I read in the forums that in the US ASUS sells the UL30Vt with a little battery (4400 mAh or something). In Hungary the UL30Vt is with 5600 mAh battery, and I think it's must have. The only thing I don't like about it is the color, a silver version would be nice
-
The UL30VT-A1 here in the states is silver and has the 5600mAh battery. Amazon.com has them for $750 USD.
-
til thanks for all of the information you have provided us. I think i am leaning toward the UL30JT actually. All I want is very light gaming and a decent CPU, for when I do video editing/video encoding etc..
The only thing I am concerned with now is battery life. Have any of the battery tests you have done shown any sign that we could possibly get 8 hours out of the battery?
All I am looking for is 6 hours when doing basic web surfing on wifi. I dont think I would need turbo boost or turbo33 on when doing those tasks... but then again who knows? -
My U30JC get's 7.5 hours web surfing and office apps, I can't believe that the JT wouldn't surpass that briantek.
-
I'm doing this test right now with Turbo33 off, Turbo Boost on, brightness full, WiFi on, Bluetooth on, every other parts turned to power saving mode. I will post the results tomorrow.
-
Sorry I blew the charging test because I let the notebook alone for 5 hours and when I came back the stupid Battery Monitor forgot the whole charging stats... As I recall 0% to 100% was about two and a half hours. Tomorrow I will do it again...
-
It's 9:23pm in Hungary so tomorrow is soon for me
-
Thats great
But Amazon do not deliver to Hungary - except books, dvds, Kindle - because the Hungarian Post Office basically stole everything and Amazon is tired about it. I'm not kidding... They do not deliver with DHL or FedEx either because the custom-house do the same. And even if I got the product I have to pay duty (if it's from the US) and 25% VAT after it. So it's not worth it
-
Get this one:
Notebooks ASUS UL30VT-QX027V silver
its a silver vt, but it has a German keyboard and German OS.
They have a store in Munich, its not so far away from Hungary...or they will send it with GLS, which means that those pesky post office workers won't get it in their kleptomanic hands. -
That's a "bit" pessimist... I've ordered a lot of things(even a netbook) from ebay through post office of course, and everything arrived. I didn't even have to pay VAT or duty (actually there is no duty for IT goods, VAT should had been, but it wasn't). So the "everyone steals everything" is not true
-
and why not a u30jc in that case...
-
I'm sorry, you made the comment that you read the VT only had a smaller battery in the states and then proceded to say that you wish you could get one in silver. I was just informing you that we do have one offered in the states that has the bigger battery and the funny part is that it's the very color you want, silver. I threw the amount in there just to let you know what the cost is for us cause that's usually the next thing I ask to myself when someone posts something about a laptop offered in another country they think or know we don't have over here. I hope you can get the one that you want!
-
Sorry, I didn't mean to be sarcastic or anything, I really think it's great
Thanks for the info!
-
Thanks! In Hungary the black one costs about the same but with hungarian keyboard and OS. I don't know what to do
I like the silver because the black is a fingerprint magnet and I imagine the silver is not (or it's less noticeable).
-
Because it is expensive, heavy and it has an optical drive. I don't need it, I think disks are obsolete.
-
I'm posting from the UL30Jt, it's on battery 29 minutes by now. T33 off, TB on, brightness full, Wi-Fi on, everything else is in battery saving mode. Flash 10.1 rc2 installed. I'm watching Youtube (FullHD works ok with these settings and Intel, but I can notice a few framedrop), writing here, nothing special. While I'm writing this, the CPU speed is 1.6 GHz. The predicted remaining time is 5:30 by Battery Monitor. I'm going to sleep soon so exact results tomorrow.
-
Sorry I meant for your GF
-
She's probably expensive too!
-
Well guys it's May 1. It's supposed to come out today somewhere right?
-
Those are just rumors.
And it also depends on location.. it's not the 1st yet in USA. I can't imagine anything gets announced on a saturday, anyways.... -
Hi Til,
Can you do a Battery test with real-life "browsing, surfing, Word processing" test? So i guess that would be optimus off, TB off, T33 on/off.
I'm not sure if that's different from the battery life test you're doing right now (TB on, T33 off, power-saving for every other part) but i'm really interested in these battery life tests as i am a student. I need the all day-computing and mobility above the performance of CPU/GPU. Currently the ul30vt lasts around 6-7 hours so if the ul30jt has subpar battery life with minimal performance gain, i will go with ul30vt.
Do anyone have the exact battery life performance tests for the ul30vt-a1? that'll be great help to compare the ul30jt vs the ul30vt in battery performance
I've waited FOREVER to buy the ul30 (from the ul30 to ul30vt to the ul30jt) and your tests will help finalize my decision between the ul30jt and ul30vt.
Thanks. -
Firstly, Optimus by nature cannot be "turned off". But battery saving mode will keep it on the Intel chip unless you try watching a HULU HD video. Low power mode will also slow the CPU.
Secondly, ASUS on their own page rates the UL30Vt for "12 hrs" (on the 5600mAh battery). They rate the UL30Jt as "10+ hrs". They list the UL30Jt as also coming with the 5600mAh battery. It would seem that the i5 chip/UL30Jt requires more power.
Reviewers actually GOT the 12 hrs claimed on the UL30Vt by leaving wifi off & staying in Office apps, integrated graphics & battery saving mode.
So if the UL30Vt can get 8-10 hrs easy in wifi & Office apps, then it makes sense the UL30Jt will get less; perhaps 6-7 hrs.
If ASUS itself lists the expected battery life for the UL30Jt as LESS than the UL30Vt by 2 hrs, then the battery life of the UL30Vt will indeed be better by an hour or so. -
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Except it really doesn't. The Core 2 Duo+Nvidia combo uses about the same amount of power as Core i5+Nvidia. I think it might be Optimus's fault for worse battery life. -
The i5 at 2.13GHz would definitely use more power than the C2D at 1.7GHz, though.
I would like to see this analysed in depth. What we need is a graph during the battery life test depicting the clock frequency of the processor, and whether the Nvidia chip is on at the time. -
the I5-520UM uses 18W
The SU7300 uses 10W
The I5-520UM is also clocked higher
the I5 uses more power ಠ_ಠ -
That doesn't account for the power used by the uncore, which replaces the entire northbridge from the SU7300.
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Um yeah you don't understand these new processors TDP rating at all because the Core i5's TDP includes the now defunct northbridge and graphics being added to the cpu die, meaning alone the cpu has about the same rating as the SU7300.
And also:
Core i5-520UM 1.06GHz
Core 2 Duo SU7300 1.3GHz
So how is the i5 clocked faster? Only when turbo boost is on. -
The i5-520UM uses 18W including the on-chip GPU?
At which clock setting?
My i3-350M uses 25W when running at stock 2.26GHz. It uses 9-10W when running in Office mode (1.2GHz). In Battery Saving mode, it tends to clock down to 0.9GHz and uses around 5.5W.
Brightness affects it as well.
So just saying "i5-520UM uses 18W" needs clarification. -
I don't understand why Optimus couldn't be turned off, surely they must have added a config option to force the GPU to stay in integrated mode...
Either way, it looks like the UL30JT uses 20% more power than the UL30VT.
I think the choices are as follows:
- If you use CPU-intensive apps, particularly encoders, the UL30JT can be much faster thanks to hyper-threading
- If you use GPU-intensive apps you gain nothing from the UL30JT so you might as well get the UL30VT
- If you require the most mobility possible, the UL30VT lasts 20% longer -
I think the UL30JT's extra speed has more to do with higher clock speeds and the new architecture than HT.
