I know that an i7 will be available later on, but for the time being the i5 is planned to be sold in sweden, which is where i live.
-
I thought asus was already shipping the revised zenbooks? The people at b&h said they just received a new shipment so I am hoping they have the revised trackpads. I shall see next week.
-
The only difference between those two is 100MHz (1.7GHz to 1.8GHz i.e. 5%) base clock bump, a 200MHz (2.7GHz to 2.9GHz i.e. 7.5%) turbo boost bump, and an increase from 3 to 4MB of L3 cache. Since they're both dual core the differences are minimal for those worried about i5 versus i7.
Willing to bet good money that the next gen core i (Ivy Bridge) will be a much bigger performance bump. -
so your advice is to wait until april? what about those who don't really need a better gpu? also, do you think that there will be other improvements? as for the cpu, isn't there a significant difference between i5 and i7?
-
That is true, the Ivy bridge is suppose to support Retina display which = better graphics. I am willing to bet the nex generation wont have the same aluminum chassis though. But I also hear AMD is coming out with a better processor.
-
And ARM will be in the game soon
-
Ivy bridge represents a decent incremental bump in both iGPU and CPU performance, so if you're upset that the gold colored Asus U31DX isn't coming with an i7, you'd be doubly upset that you didn't wait for a 15 to 25% performance bump from the next gen core i CPUs.
The difference between i5 and i7 depends on which i5 you're comparing to which i7. An i7 quad core is a much faster CPU than an i5 dual core. An i7 dual core is just a very slightly faster i5 with a tiny increase in L3 memory.
Don't get swept up in the marketing. Intel and laptop manufacturers sell dual core i7s to the unsuspecting who think that just because it says i7 it must be much much faster than the i5, and people don't bother to check to see the difference is so small, that it's much more important to make sure your laptop has more memory, an SSD, better display, better trackpad, better keyboard etc than to worry about an i5 versus i7 if they're both dual core. -
My UX31 blue screens every time it wakes from sleep. My recovery partition is corrupt and I have no recovery disk. Would someone please upload a recovery iso?
-
I already did this in an earlier post. See my download links.
I also have some wake up issue after doing some updates.
Note if you have a different spec to me you might need the other touchpad drivers.
Plus, in regards to making the backup function.
If you are going to burn cd`s then easy, but if you want to make a single USB boot device you need to firstly make a USB bootable stick using the first ISO, then extract the second ISO and place the file on the root of the usb stick.
When prompted for disk 2, remove the use stick and re insert. It will then auto start. -
Thanks for the reply. I had found your link before, but it seems the ISO are gone. I see only a couple JPGs: Index of /asusux31e
ASUS will send a disk, but they charge $50 plus shipping and it take 1-2 weeks to arrive.
Can you please repost the ISO? -
ok, thanks for the insight. Guess I'll wait then. You don't happen to know when and if Asus will upgrade the ux31 to ivy bridge, do you?
-
Thats odd. I will re-upload later today. Maybe I moved them to another place. Will check.
In other business, has anyone noticed how the USB3 port is faster than the USB2 port, even using USB2 only devices.
See my other post
http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...vs-usb-2-devices-usb-3-ports.html#post8265441 -
I had noticed that. I also noticed that the USB 3.0 port requires the supplied driver to work correctly. If I use the default Win7 driver, it works with USB sticks, but reboots the PC when I plug in my Microsoft mouse dongle.
-
I though it may be a power issue, ie the device running faster with more power which USB3 provides.
This is not the case as I used a power hub to both ports with the same results. -
Hi,
I am re uploading now, but will take a few hours to complete. You need to download all parts then use winrar to unzip.

Can anybody check the stereo balance of their UX31 speakers?
Got mine last week, but the audio center point is to the left. If I turn it upside down it follows, so it's not just my ears. All stereo settings are neutral and I've tried with headphones (no issues), so it's not about balance settings either.
I'm asking because I want to know if it's got to do with something like the chassis of the laptop and more empty space on the left side creating an amplification chamber, or if the speakers are just faulty. There is also some distortion on some speech frequencies even at low volumes. Everything else is fine (except the horrible keyboard and the touchpad drivers), so I don't want to send it in and get the same problem back along with probably more.
Try it out by centering your nose with the Asus logo and listening. Then turn the device upside down and see if the audio "location" changes sides too.
Thanks! -
How big a difference are you talking about, i hear no real difference, maybe a slight difference in sound, but not volume.
-
The audio center point is to the left by a noticeable amount. Maybe somewhere between the F4 and F5 keys if I'm listening from the same distance as where the touch pad is. I did not pay attention to it at first, so it might not be dramatic, but it's very apparent when you turn the device upside down as sound suddenly jumps to the right ear. So that's a good way to test it.
Just found this a few pages back:
Would be interesting to know if it's just got something to do with balance settings or if this is a problem with some batch. -
I will check tomorrow furthur and post my results.

Located one of the ADATA UX31-RSL8's tonight in Office Depot. I called around today (OD & BB) and had the clerks read me various bits of information off the brown outside box - noone would break the seal... You would think I had ask for their first born! Anyhow, I can post various pics of the outside brown box if anyone is interested. I couldn't find anything that revealed the ADATA goodness. However, the display they had set up had the correct internals and the CSR said the in stock boxes shipped same time 11/22/2011.
As expected, my heart raced a bit after breaching the first box, searching for the tiny 'SandForce Driven' sticker - sure enough it was there - on side, upper corner... It has the Sen trackpad, but no problems so far. Also, OD was offering $100 mail in-rebate and $50 instant off - surprising, this wasn't expected since it wasn't advertised on the web. I am happy to answer any questions on the lappy. Pretty damn slick so far! Oh, and I have to give at least a thumbs up to the CSR at Despot - I told him I was going to hunt him down for the display if this one didn't have the ADATA - he was cool with it. -
^ thanks for the update..I hope our relative in the US will have the patience to scour thru stores that have this sticker..what store in particular (place) is that sir ravynsage?
-
This is now fully uploaded.

My left is a little lounder too. But not whats beyond my expectations of internal speakers in a small laptop.

Hi dnc-mafia,
I have the exact same problem. One difference though: it happened to me twice in 3 days. I just kept forcing the shutdown and it finally came back. This time it's not working. I'm afraid to send it to the service center: they might not see the problem just like the first time it happened to me and the screen magically worked again.
Could you please keep me posted when you get your UX31 back from the service center? That would be great, thx in advance
-
What's with the wrong quote? Sorry, not a Forum person, I'm just gonna send the message again...

Hi, can anyone with a UX31 tell me if it is possible to insert a normal-sized SD card (32 x 24mm) into the UX31 SD slot fully (such that the bottom end of the SD card is flushed with the UX31 body)? I am asking because I can only fit my SD card halfway in (if I use any more force I am afraid it might break the SD card)?? However the SD card still gets detected and I can copy files from the SD card to the desktop.
Is my SD card slot defective?? -
No no!
You just demonstrated that your card reader is working perfectly!
I have a UX31, it's completely normal.
Cheers -
Thanks Dothy, though I must admit I am disappointed!
Does anyone know if there is any type of memory card that can fit into the card slot without sticking out (flushed with UX31's edge)? I have developed a practice of leaving a memory card in my laptop permanently to store my automated backups and do not want it sticking out which might cause it to be damaged.
Thanks to anyone who can solve my problem! -
Sorry to be a pest, but it seems parts 7 and 10 are corrupt. I've downloaded several times and both WinRAR and 7-zip say they are corrupt. Would you please verify them in WinRAR and upload again?

Hi guys, after some googling (sorry, newbie here!) I found the RS-MMC memory card. Can the Zenbook UX31 SD/MMC card slot take in a DV RS-MMC (so that the card fits nicely in the slot without protruding)? Any limitations I should be aware of?
I am thinking of buying through amazon.com, Amazon.com: eTECH 2GB DV RS MMC RSMMC MEMORY CARD FOR NOKIA E60 N70 N90 6680: Cell Phones & Accessories.
Thanks

I am uploading a new version now, 100mb per chunk, check back in a few hours.
-
Ok thanks for checking it out! It's just that it's marketed as having great audio and no reviews have touched on this. But now all 3 that have tried it have reported that the left is louder.
One really odd thing pointed out by another user is that using Realtek's generic drivers instead of Asus customized ones seems to balance it a bit. I noticed this too. But it sounds crazy because the sound is to the left on Linux without drivers and it's centered with headphones.
The only explanation I can quickly think of is that the Realtek chip they use is flawed and the newest driver checks for that model and if it's present, tries to balance it with a software tweak. That or I'm going mad

My loverly hosing company have got upset about me hosting rar files. So I have had to take the ISOs down. If anyone wants them please PM me and I will send via another method.
-
Put them on MegaUpload... oh no wait, forget that
-
I got them last night and everything is OK after restore. Thanks so much for taking the time to upload them.
-
Your welcome.
Yes, megaupload is gone....
Will keep the rar files handy should anyone want them in future. -
You might find that this serves your needs. I use it with a 16g microSD card. Does not interfere with anything or get damaged when left in.

Hi Dothy,
Weird it turned on after a view times of rebooting. I tried it for several times and also in safe mode, bot got nothing. It's still in RMA, 2 weeks now.
And if they dont see your problem, ( Ur complaint that u notified to ur retailer ) And they alway get a paper with ur complaint on it.
so they know there is something wrong even if they dont see the problem occuring -
I tested a UX31 in the shop today (i5, 128GB). In the "Windows Performance", the Graphics ("performance for Windows Aero") scored 1.0!
Seriously, how great is this machine for video processing? That's actually what I want it for (I am after the i7 with 256GB).
Does anyone have any experience, for instance using Corel VSP X3? -
Is there a link I can download the iso?
-
Hi,
I am uploading them to a new location. I will post here when it uploaded with the link.
Its 5GB so takes a while ! -
Hi, I have made recovery ISOs (2 ISOs) using Asus AI Recovery. How do I use the ISOs to restore my laptop? Do I still need a Windows 7 CD?
Also, is it possible to restore using a USB drive? What are the steps involved? -
Hi,
I have uploaded and will now PM those that asked with the download link. I do not want to post it publicly as its on my home network.
I have included the full cd unsplit, but if you try and get this it might fail.
Regards. -
You can make a bootable USB stick with YUMI, then boot from it as if it was a CD. I posted earlier about how to make CD2 work on a single usb stick.
You do not need a win 7 cd. Even if you did you can download it from notebook review. -
MTT, you need to turn on PM so I can send you the link.
PS please dont publish it.
