ive read in other forums that there is a product you can buy to overlay on the screen that will make it glossy..
anyone have personal experience with that? -

The notebooks will start getting built on Friday...... today we're just getting everything all situated. I don't think I'm going to be around this weekend as I have a business trip to make, but I think the guys will work this weekend to try to make headway with all of these pre-orders.... so they might get shipped earlier than I thought.

hi. has anyone had any experience dealing with istnc.com? thanks
Thanks,
Sean -
yeah. I checked out reseller ratings earlier. They are on there but have no ratings. I guess thats better than having negative ratings. If someone was unhappy, theyd be sure to let everyone know that they could. PROportable looks amazing but unfortunately if anything went wrong i would have to pay 150$ shipping to use my warranty... [
] So unfortunately i have to look elsewhere, like istnc.com, whose warranty covers my shipping both ways![

Ofcourse, you could also check with other vendor like RJTECH if proportable isn't convicing enough. Talk to Richard Wu. He'll hook you up.

yeah thats PROportables warranty details in the states. I emailed justin and he told me that im paying both ways since im in canada and its 75 both ways. Rick from istnc.com emailed me and said they will pay ground shipping both ways to canada. ALso i found istnc.com on ebay and they have 100% feedback rating and 400 transactions. And to add to credibility they are an Intel Premier Solution Provider. Also, rick is very friendly and helpful. So im feeling pretty comfortable with this company too.
Thanks,

I haven't dealth with them yet, a few people have but those who have hasn't received their laptop yet. So no idea.
you might want to check www.resellerratings.com

I ordered from IST. They don't have a rating on Reseller Ratings because they just started selling to consumers via their website last year. Before that, they dealt exclusively with corporations. But that being said, I think all 3 Asus dealers mentioned (ProPortable, RJ Tech, & IST) will give you a quality product with good service. You just have to choose which you prefer. [

For anyone who is interested, found this off another forum...
Please look at the manufacturer specs here (they are correct) ----> http://www.ynot2k.com/products/laptops/z71v/Z71V.pdf
Tested model Specs:
Asus z71V (z7100vp)
Nvidia Geforce Go 6600 PCIE 128mb
1gb (512mbx2) DDR2 533mhz Infineon chip
Intel Pentium M 1.86ghz 533fsb
60gb 5400rpm SATA Fujitsu 8mb cache
2915abg WiFi Module
Windows XP Pro SP2
Base drivers of the Original asus drivers cd
No overclocking and no tweaking
General Appearance:
The z71v lacks the luster of asus's most notable series the m6n. Besides that the construction is very solid gunmetal color. Not exactly sure what its made of . Its not as sexy and sleek of a laptop laptop as the m6n but it certainly inherited asus trademark....quality and design. It is a very sturdy laptop. No play anywhere. No loose parts. Its exactly what you would expect from asus flagship line. Only complaint is the extra space on the top and bottom of the lcd. That extra plastic could have been used for something.
Ports, buttons and expansion:
z71v accentuates asus redundancy for including extra usb ports. It has 5 usb 2.0 ports. My humble opinion is that they should have sacrificed 2 of them for the port bar 3 option which for some strange reason was left out. It does have the trademark firewire port and card reader on the side. It also has a pciexpress expansion bay. The pcie bay is an awesome feature becuase it does absolutely nothing at the moment and we cant even figure out how it opens. The modular bay which is now HOT swappable is there. It will take the optical bay battery, the spare hdd, and the optical drive which is either the dvd/rw or dvd/cdrw. Asus did include the full array of lights you would expect from a laptop, they even added the lights on top of the lcd for when the lid is closed. Audio DJ which allows you to play cd's outside of windows os when lid is closed. Useless feature if you ask me but it is there. It also has the standard ports:
One VGA port/Mini D-sub 15-pin for external display
5 USB 2.0 ports
Two Audio jacks : Head phone or
SPDIF, Mic-in
One RJ-11 for modem
One RJ-45 for LAN
One 1394 B Type jack
S-Video composite TV output
On the panel above the keyboard it has 5 quick launch buttons on the right and the lights on the left. The light up blue led power button in the center is a nice touch adopted from the m6n. Many features were adopted from the m6n like the placement of the usb ports and keyboard locking mechanism. Asus actually included the plastic mounts for both the standard ata interface hdd and Serial ata (sata). Sata in a laptop is a sweet feature which should add a nice boost to the read and write speeds.
Video card and assembly:
Under the hood you will find the standard stuff. No need to go into details the pictures we have on the site speak for them selves. One very notable feature which may be a shock to everyone is the modular video card. Thats right asus just made this puppy upgradeable for gamers (if the cards them selves ever reach the market of course). 4 screws come off. Heatsink dismounts. Video card pops out just like ram. And presto you are holding the pcie 6600 Go with 128mb. The ram is made by Hynix all 128mb of it. The kicker here is that the actual card is assembled by asus in Taiwan (see pictures). Infact asus name is all over this one unlike last years models. The vga/chipset cooler is a nice design. It actually gathers all the heat from the surrounding compartments and passes it out the pack through a metal duct powered by one single fan. The cpu compartment has its own fan not shared by any other heat producers. The air intake for both fans comes from the bottom through a see through mesh grill.
Sound, touchpad, keyboard and screen:
The azalia chipset is a very good quality audio chip. Has the spdif port which i personally was looking for. Hook up a pair of good quality headphones and go shoot some terrorists. Personally i thought the integrated speakers are what should be expected....before they were tested. On the contrary asus did something unique here. Not sure what kind of speakers they use and how many but the sound quality is superb. There is a utility that tests the sound for you. A bee flying around from left to right and top to bottom. The speakers are so nice you can actually tell where the buzzing bee is without looking at the screen. Thats right somehow they accomplished vertical and horizontal effects on 2 way speakers??? Got me i dont know how. Still for gamers a nice pair of headphones is the way to go. Asus did always have a nice touchpad except for the original z9000 which has been phased out for a few months now. The keyboard is solid where it needs to be except the very top near the function keys where it has just a bit of play. It was the same issue with the m6n. Now on to the screen. Yes it is a wsxga+ res screen with 1680x1050 resolutions. This time asus did get all the specs right on their spec sheet (surprised me). Good quality screen. I believe this one was adopted from the z81k (a2ks gaming machine only for canada). Great screen, crisp and great contrast, very wide view angles horizontal and vertical, good brightness, great for gaming, no complaints.
ALS (ambient light sensor) and other gizmos:
ALS could have been left out. It is the equivalent of a windshield wiper that senses rain. Nice invention but only belongs on cars that cost more then a brick home. The mic on top of the lcd is a nice touch.
Noise Factor:
If you hate the way desktop replacements feel and sound then this will surely be a pleaser. Even under hi load the fan noise is very low. Under normal load its just a non issue.
Z71V Benchmark & Figures:
z71v/m6n 3dMark 2003 (Freeware Lite) = 4436 / 2762
z71v/m6n 3dMark 2005 (Full Pro) = 1728 / 1168
PCmark=
MobileMeter=
Max Battery life (low load lcd on)=
Min Battery life (continues 3dmark)=
Moovie Battery life (Hi brightness on DVD)=
Win XP Pro SP2 time to install = 14 minutes
GPU Core Clock =
GPU VRAM Clock=
Conclusion:
This is a big improvement over the m6n which was our leading laptop until now for gamers. The m6n lacked features such as a wsxga+ lcd which is now available on the z71v. It had a decent card but some games had to be played at low-med settings. The pcie 6600 is a big improvement over the 9700. Everything right down to the overall performance is better. More to follow saturday.....

Hi all. I was thinking about getting a Dell i6000 until I saw this computer. I look forward to reading the reviews as they come out. But for now...
I consider myself an average PC user. I am not super technical or anything, but since I've grown up in the computer age I am somewhat familiar with them. I was wondering, what kind of programs would come on the Z71V if I bought one? I'd have Proportable or whoever include all the pieces for me (HD, wireless, OS, etc.) so the machine would be ready to go. But what exactly would XP Pro SP2 come with? Would it include Microsoft Office programs? I get the sense that this laptop will be more trimmed-down than a Dell, but will I be able to get going and start using it right away without difficulty?
It seems that Asus is more of a "bare bones" manufacturer than some. But if I order the Z71V with all hardware plus an OS included, will I be totally ready to go? I just wanted to know, because I'm not the type who would want to custom install everything I need...I'd be afraid of messing something up.
Thanks! -

To BritVancouver:
I'm from Calgary, and thinking of getting the Z71V later in the year. You will most likely have to pay PST and GST (only GST in Alberta!). There is a likelihood that you would have to pay a duty on it, since it is a Taiwanese product. I was planning to check with a customs office about the duty before I bought mine.
-
Brit,
Yep, according to the customs Canada website, they charge GST, PST (unless you're in AB) and something called HST (?). They will use the insured price to calculate duty. If you order from a place that ships either FedEX or UPS, watch out because you will be charged something called a brokerage fee, which is a kick in the face and sucks. If it's shipped through the U.S. Postal Service, you will get it from Canada Post and they charge something like $5 handling fee, which is NOTHING compared to the brokerage fees of the other two. Then you will pay your duty when you pick your package up at your post office.
I've also been meaning to call a customs office to figure out exactly how much they are going to charge. I'll remember to post a message somewhere in this forum when I get a straight answer. I've heard some kind of nasty rumour that the CDN gov't has recently imposed some kind of additional import tax on items from the US in order to punish the US for softwood lumber and cattle and whatnot. I haven't varified this, but it wouldn't surprise me.
If anyone else gets info on duty, etc, please post it since there seem to be a number of Canadians in here who want to buy ASUS computers from the US!
