Thanks... been lookin for a thread like that for a few days now.

I'll assume when he says "it seems that in vista the cards do the same however unchecking the checkbox which allows the computer to shut off the wifi card gets rid of the issue."

is the same thing as going to the command prompt, doing CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER for elevated privaledges (if not running as an admin), and then typing

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disable

    and pressing ENTER?

I'm at work right now with no access to Vista so I can't hunt down the actual GUI textbox. Anyone know where it is?... otherwise I'll just try the command when I get home.

I've been using a netgear USB wireless stick in the meantime. Also, I keep this thing plugged in 24/7 whether it's in use or not. In fact I've never tried the wireless with it unplugged or tried unplugging it while the wireless was on... so it does occur if this thing has been in overclock mode for hours on end, then the wireless finally turned on. Regardless, I will try the wireless with it plugged in and without tonight... as well as unplugging it mid Wi-Fi use.

    Thanks.

McFly....there are some bad intel cards out there....I had one that wouldn't work on battery power....new card and problem fixed....i.e. 4965. Check with your vendor.

Im sad, my card stays around 80 at idle, this is with a cooler on high, AS5 and i even whent and cut holes in the bottom so the air could get sucked out with the cooler easier.

How is this even possible that my card could run so hot!!

Playing WOW gets it up to 102 and then it clocks down or something for safety and my FPS go from 60 to 25. IT SUCKS!

I dont know what else i can do.

I'm having the wireless + battery issue as well. I've been having it for awhile, but it is becoming a problem due to me not being able to take my computer anywhere w/o plugging it in. (ie airport)

Thermal paste needs (a lot) of time to start taking effect, that's why. Mine overheated like hell but now idle at 168/100 is 74, load WiC 500/530 is 96. Guild Wars load at 350/400 is 97

Wow, I downloaded speedfan and I'm showing upwards of 125 degrees in idle. I think I should purchase a cooling pad as I don't feel comfortable adding the thermal paste.

    edit:

After reading the replies again....the numbers where in C. Mine are in F. I feel better now.

i know it takes a while but it really doesnt work very good at all at first, i thought it would work at least better than stock

i sure hope it drops soon haha. One thing that is good though is that ever since i cut those holes i can run 3dmark all the way through even in overclock, which i could never do before. i think i got 3800 in gaming mode with stock clocks on gpu

Thermal paste does not take a long time to take effect. I dont know who said that. AS5 tends to get better over time as it settles better into the microscopic surface holes of the heatsink but it only gets abit better over time, the major effect takes place right away.

Too many people just do not know how to install it right.

Found out i have the wireless problem too. Where is this checkbox that people are talking about, or do they just mean in the power options under wirless set it to maximum performance. becuase i have already done that and it didnt fix anything.

the right way to pu AS5 on would be to

    1) CAREFULLY clean the surfaces that will come into contact with the AS5 (be sure to turn the notebook off and pull the batts. To clean the surfaces, use a non polar solvent aka cleaning agents available in stores or just plan old alcohol (more dangerous since it conducts electricity = caution)

    2) apply a THIN layer of AS5 onto the surface. it should only be a very light grey-silverish color

    3) when placing the HS back, do it in 1 smooth and firm motion in 1 direction. DO NOT place HS on partially, remove then attempt to place it on again. This will cause air bubbles to be trapped

I think theres a guide to applying AS5 somewhere on this site

my temps were about 86 idle stock paste, and then with AS5 they were the same haha maybe 1 degree cooler sometimes but i dont count that cuase thats just sometimes

now with holes in the bottom and as5 and a cooling pad at idle i get 78 which i am happy about pathetically i just thought i would get a much bigger drop so im probably going to reaply the as5 on the gpu cuase i might have done it bad.

it does tak a really long time to get to 78 though

    You just have to wait.

The stock thermal paste was 86 for me too in the beggining but now it's 78

Alright, i reapplied AS5 for the last time haha, now my 78 with cooling pad and everything has dropped to 72, so if it does get even better after a while then i am very happy. but vicious was right becuase if you do it right you do see the difference imediately. I peak at about 94 now when i used to peak at 102

Zac, you are now about where I am with Temps. I use a Belkin Cooler, which I think is shaped perfectly for the C90s. I can get my hand between the cooler and notebook bottom.

I know my stuff :p I have been building computers for a hobby my whole life, and helping others build computers too.

when I say something its no hearsay usually, just repeating what I heard elsewhere on the forums or something its from experience that I speak.

I was the biggest fan of AS5 but my last install with the c90 I found a new champ, the metal pad from coolerabortory works even better, plus the bonus is the install is fool proof.

Hey Guys, Any cheap cooling pad suggestions? The Zalman one is abit too pricey for me. My temp are half decent right now. 69 for CPU on idle, peak is about 76, GPU idle is about 72, peak about 85. Both have AS5. Thanks

i wanted the zalman but they were sold out, also the free shipping was supposed to take around 7 business days and it only took 2 days

Right now I have a new gpu and it has stock thermal compound under the heat spreader between the core. With the stock thermal pads on the ram chips.

I did however put some aftermarket thermal compound between the heat spreader and the heat sink (the top most piece that goes thru the coper pipe and to the fins where the fans are)

Its just some cheap evercool stuff, nothing fancy. I was swaping back and forth between the GDDR3 and DDR2 card constantly for test so I ran out of AS5 rather fast. I have one metal pad left that I can use for my permanent install, however I dont think it will help much, the idea of how the gpu is setup with the heat spreader there kills off all thermal efficantcy right away, and its not super form fitting eather so the really thin metal pad I think may leave gaps.

I know it was for the sake of making things safer and easier to use to have that there, but if the final heatsink could go directly on the card it would really help with cooling rather than have that heat spreader there which is a poor metal to use (should be copper atleast) and then 2 layers of thermal compound.

I've been having the common issue with incompatible RAM causing the laptop not to run on battery power (or at least, I assume that's the issue). Can anyone recommend some decently fast RAM that is known to be compatible?

For 2GB sticks? I know Gentech uses Super Talent, or at least I'm pretty sure.

For 1GB sticks Corsair is working well

I was having the battery crash problem, where it would appear to run when I unplugged it but then freeze when I would try to run something, but it was the effing wireless card....no problems now on battery now or wireless on battery after the new card install.

2GB Super Talent is one of the 2GB that known works, we also tried Samsung IC but it freeze on battery mode.

For 1GB Corsair, it depends on the batch of what IC they use, some works but some doesn't so we decided not to use it on C90S.

For Kingston 1GB, they used to use Elpida IC and it works on battery mode, the new Kingston 1GB they use Micron IC and it doesn't work on battery mode.

New to your forum. Been messing with computers for around 10 yrs. I am interested in what will be my first lapee :) I like the build your own concept of the C90S. If you guys would give your actual Ram model numbers that work it might be easier for people to get on track with compatable ram manufacturers. I would like to build one but it would have to be a budget minded one for now and upgrade as prices go down with new tech. Has anyone built one with a slower proc. what model did you use? I have been out of work for 6 months now and have to pack my bags after the holidays and this would be nice to have away from home. Thanks

    Two things:

    1. I've arranged for a tradein of RAM (apparently xoticpc had known of the issue, but I configured it and they built it long before [it's been in the pipeline this long because I ordered custom paintwork])

    2. does anyone know a way to enable transparency in vista (I'm assuming the customized 8600M driver ASUS created is designed to try to keep it off by default. However, I'm dual booting, and my vista install is going to see virtually no use on the battery, making the power-saving measure unnecessary) (EDIT: found this trick to bypass the driver: http://www.tweakvista.com/article39008.aspx)

Just to throw this out there, I think i have THE best 8600M GDDR2 card out. I have been running 560/1180/530 for the last 2 months. I reapplied Artic Cooling MX-1 about a week ago and started paying attention to the temps. I just went to 570/1200/530 and ran 3DMark06 each test looped 3 times while event logging using ntune. My max temp was only 83C.....at idle its 60C. Keep in mind this is all in turbogear overclock mode at 2.93ghz with the e6700......

Then your really lucky ! Most of us are idling in the mid-to high 70's for the GPU, high 90's under load. I wonder whats wrong with ours. I just noticed that forerunner and you have the coolest running GPU's around....
