    NEW TEMPS:

I downgraded to Forceware 169.04 and now my temps are 55C idle and 80C max (using looped 3DMARK06 method)

So aparently using 169.09 makes your temps go up........

As a side note I ran the benchmark normally and there was NO change in score from 169.09 back to 169.04.

Stupid question guys, but how do you guys update the Bios? Which utility are you guys running? I can't find AsusUpdate/Winflash anywhere and all I can find is the AFUDos utility, but I don't have a floppy drive to run DOS update.

OK, I just got my C90S and I'm having the same issue as everyone has. I bought the Velocity Micro X25, flashed it with the latest 802 BIOS. Running the stock 2GB Corsairs.

Gaming mode does not work, I get the BSOD after a minute or so. If I run standard everything is fine and it won't crash no matter what I throw at it.

Any ideas? I've read this entire thread through, but there's no indication or fix as to this problem. It's either a heat or RAM problem, what's the easiest way to figure that problem out?

I'm taking mine back for the second time and hope this doesn't last a month and a half again. Bios did fix some problems, but after three days I'm back to square one, dxdiag fails at the basic dx7-9 tests!!!

I would just want they replaced my nvidia with the new 8800 if it was out yet as the rumours go..

    Argh...

Toss a fan under it to test for heat, from there... make sure you get ram that is known to work.

I had issues with my e6700 i downgraded to a e6600 and found performance to be equal but temps to have gone way down.

    hello,

    few questions for you:
    1. I have tried to install a x6800, but it goes to 100'C underload... do you thinks is normal?
    2. what do you use to monitor temperaturs?
    3. I have found nothing to overclock the 8600 under vista. Atitool (my preafered solution) seems not to work.

    Thanks for your help.

Its too hot, atleast in my opinion. While at first people were saying the c90 supports the x6800 I do belive since then asus has stated it does not offically support that cpu (for thermal reasons none the less)

The first move is your choice, eather RMA it and have it replaced with a new cpu that may run cooler (I had to do this I had a bad cpu) or start doing mods to make it run cooler, like replace the stock TIM on the heatsink, or even get a cooling pad ect)

    The CPU reaches 100C ???

Wouldnt it turn itself down before that?

CPU cutoff is probably like 115c or even higher, doesnt mean its safe or ok tho, it could even damage other things in the notebook at a very high temp.

Thermal design is like 70C if I recall.

Other than that, how do you re-enable SPIDF out? I think I disabled it to make my headphones work but now it's a problem to get sound over HDMI

    Hello.
I have a C90s. (At least I had one as of this morning). My notebook melted. It was in sleep mode with the LCD folded down, sitting on my couch. While having breakfast I began to smell something burning. My C90S was melting the fabric on my suede couch and also the keys were melting under the closed LCD. This incredibly dangerous and perhaps fatal situation could have resulted in my furniture catching fire as well as a fatality.

I have pictures but do not know where to post them. I don't want to simply return my C90S without getting the word out of this terrible potentially fatal flaw in its thermal protection.

My C90S has never given me issues up to this point. I am certain the reseller which I purchased it from will replace it since I have only had it since June. However, I am very weary about its overall design now. It only takes one catastrophic event to cause someone to pray that they had it to do over. Me and my family are safe, and I want to ensure that your notebooks are not left unattended so that your families remain safe as well.

If someone would like to see the pictures of my C90S, please email me at [email protected]

    My configuration was as follows:

    Brian,

PLEASE post pictures here on the forum. That seems like a pretty big issue and im sure we would all like to see it. Also, I would try to get with Asus about the damages done to the furniture. They also need to investigate the cause of this and send out a warning to those who may potential have this happen to their notebook. Its a bigger deal than you may think.

Sleep doesn't shut down the computer, as for storing it without having it off completely thats hibernate. honestly I think thats a user error and not a computer error at all.

Plus there are several different modes of sleep, depending on which you were using its nearly the same as having the computer completely on.

Closing the computer killed one form of ventilation, then having it on a couch instead of a flat hard surface killed the other. So it was more or less bound to happen.

Vicious has a point there, the couch would absorb less heat a desk.

But still, I found it strange that it melted. I let mine sleep all day (the power button flashing) and when I get back it's all cold.

You can just go to imageshack.us to unpload it

Yep! Never have a laptop turned on with the LCD closed on a soft fabric surface, it acts as an insulator containing the heat and constricts all ventilation from the cooling devices utilized by notebook. I also believe that this is a user error, it's like leaving a hair dryer in a water filled sink(not as drastic but you know what I mean) then realize it can cause a fire or fatalities.

    hello,
are u sure that x6800 is not supported ufficially?? My notebook was built by Asus with a E6600. I have substituted the cpu by myself and I got a ES version with all unlocked multiplier :). Is there nothin better than the official utility to change cpu setup?

How did you do that???? =/

BTW: Everyest reports the chipset's maximum memory to be 4GB. Is the c90s using a "clone" version of i945G that only supports 3 or what?
It also reports the SATA controller being SATA-II ?????

    Hi,
I'm new to this forum and want a good laptop. After searching a lot, I found the Velocity online @ circuitcity. As this has Asus components, and therefore may be very similare, I thought of buying it. My BIG Q is: does it have a matte screen? As I'm fed up with the glossy 1280/800 that my current hp has. And if not, how can I obtain one such screen? Or shall I look for another brand?
    I appreciate any input.
    Thanks,
    Simona

    It's a glossy 1680x1050 screen

I wouldn't the velocity micro though, as it is at a higher price I beliece. Check t out at 1toppc.com , and the 160GB 5400RPM HDD is free

I tried to "hack" it awhile back and was not too successful. It is to my knowledge that a x6800 is not officially supported. I believe it was our BTOTech rep that had stated that but I have not seen the actual Asus statement saying its not supported. The limit officially I know for sure is 2.93ghz for thermal reasons, you can definitely go higher if you have some advanced cooling present but under normal working conditions its not a good idea and rather pointless unless your trying to get the #1 spot on a benchmark comp.

Strange, I know the C90S is SATAII (my 160GB 7200RPM is SATAII), but I just noticed the 4GB thing too. Also notice the build in GM950 (currently disabled), so does that mean the notebook will function without a MXM card? There are alot of strange things about the C90s, almost as though they have a personality.

*EDIT* Not that I'm saying that my C90s can talk to me, its just the randomness of the C90s can be really interesting and fun. It feels very unique and special and take a very open kind of person who isn't afraid to ask for help to work on it, thus reflects the end user.

Question: anyone else have a problem where the gpu will not clock up above low power 3d more on battery? ntune reports the clocks as 130-100 at idle on battery in the oc tab, and wont let me change it to no oc.

SATA2 drives work on SATA port (at SATA1 speed) and I don't remember seeing SATA2 on spec sheet. Might just be chipset related. I don't think the GMA950 is here, it didn't work with my broken video card at first so.... I also don't see the GMA950 GPU on the motherboard too so...

I have problem with turbo gear.

If i set game/oc/power safe mode on and shutdown my pc and try to start it again i get blue screen before i get to desktop.
I can fix this by going to safemode and setting turbo gear to standard.

This is not major problem but just annoying if i forget it to oc mode for exsample after crysis and shutdown pc without turning it to standard.
So i have to go in safemode to fix this.

Any other fixes / upgrades to fix this?
Using Windows vista home premium, turbo gear version 1.01.01

hmmm.... there was a time where i thought i also had faulty dvd drive... cause it cannot read disks at all. Turns out, my dvd drive slipped from its slot when i started tinkering with the insides of the c90. haha.

Doest hurt to check man, the dvd drive gets loose easily. Try to open ur ACE door, check if the drive is snugly fit, its hould somehow lie flush with the casing. In my case, i mistakenly removed the screw on it so i didnt know it was slowly slipping out at all...

The CPU clocks itself to the needed frequency, the stock frequency being the maximum

speed step, when idle the cpu multi goes down thus the mhz the cpu runs goes down but the fsb stays the same thus the ram runs the same speed constantly.

Also just saw the post above about 4gb ram support. I explained it before so if you want the details search for it but the short of it is that the chipset supports up to 4gb of ram addressability, in order to both register and use 4gb of ram in windows you need more than 4gb of ram addressability due to the system reserving part of that 4gb of space for itself.

As for just using 4gb of ram, the newest bios finally fixes that, you cant use all 4gb, but at least it will run with 4gb installed now.

    CPU/ GPU temps

How are you monitoring these ?

Is there a feature in the NVIDIA control panel that can monitor GPU temps ?

    Thx

    hi
is it normal that the gpu temp are higher in power saving mode?72°C
    than in overclock mode?58/60°C
is there a way to control the turbo fan's speed?
    speedfan 4.33 doesn'tregonized the fans :(
i have notepal coolermaster infinite...but on the gpu temps
there is not a big difference.....
i'ld like to downclock the gpu just to see the difference on gpu temps
but with riva tuner when i change the clock settings to lowest
    the temp stay the same...
    any one?
    thx

Ya I have to agree with E.B.E, in 13 years of building my own boxes I have NEVER cracked a MB installing RAM.

Quick question for WoW players... Do you get wedged shaped glitches when you first start warcraft? I do but they go away quickly. Besides that, the card works perfectly. Even makes a good attempt at running Crysis... 15-20 fps! :p

    Edit: everything stock btw

I play LOTR Online and it sometimes gets strange flashes with certain drivers. I need to apply some better thermal grease on my video card.

I think you are right, because I updated to one and that seemed to go away (not that it was present every time) but this driver didn't like sleep mode, so I went with another, 167.58. It works great but the glitch is back. Going to try 169.09 when I get a chance.

Am I the only one who hasn't had to send his c90 in to be repaired? Props to Gentech for their great config.

    Edit: post 700 :)
