Hah, besides a hot GDDR3 card mines kick ass (almost 0 issues), just need to use a cooler to be happy while gaming. And mine was a scratch build with memory most people couldn't get to run.

I have a hot DDR2 one. Will hit 115C then crash if not running folding@home in the backgroup, stays at 102 otherwise.

    I can't believe my E4500 doesn't go over 65 with a 100C GPU 1/4 of an inche away!

    ddr2 hits 107-109 at 640/560.

Also did some testing. Cpu clocks and voltages have no effext on high you can overclock your card.

Its interesting its core reaches 670-675 and then poops out when memory is as stock. Memory reaches 570-575 before it craps out when core is at stock. I can actually hit 615/525 with turbo mode enabled.

Yeah ive been trying to find the sweet spot between high core oc and high mem oc since maybe july of last year....so far im at 560/550....when overclocked individually I can get around 590-600 on core but only 550 on mem. This with no extra cooling with wire mess ace door cutout mod. I just keep trying the test again with different drivers but the result has been the same with all drivers so far

The OC mode does work. The question is do you want to keep RMAing your C90S to get one that works as it should. My second one works just fine! I RMAed after about a week and a half I think way back in july 2007.

    Hi guys!

I've just received my C90S, but there are some issues I can't seem to manage:

    1. Video overlay. I'm connecting my PC with my TV through HDMI. So, when I'm opening video files I want a small window on my PC, but always full screen on my TV. I've always done that before, but now I just can't find any options which does that.

    2. True DD, 5.1. When I am playing a DVD, a video file with 5.1 sound and so on, my home receiver isn't recognizing the sound as 5.1, but as normal stereo. Any suggestions?

    3. And last, which driver at laptopvideo2go is the best to use today?

Greetings from Norway, and thanks to everyone who can give me some answers! Have a nice day. :)

1.) what is currently happening? your only seeing part of the image on the TV? You may have to mess with your drivers to find a set that offers "flat panel scaling" options where you should be able to change the apsect scaling and possibly resolution of the output.

2.) it probably is just normal stereo, stuff like 5.1 is in high end desktop cards I doubt the stock on board of a laptop does it. Still the the realtec HD module used seems of great quality to me. (even creatives x-fi only outputs stereo via its optical out and its like a 150-200$ desktop card)

3.) I would start with the newest release and keep it unless you find problems then slowly roll back to older ones.

I'm not familiar with that problem (but I'm not a C90 owner, so that doesn't mean it's not known). Could you be more specific, nevertheless?

    Hey all,

I'm getting a bluescreen, and I could really use some suggestions.

I have this system, from Velocity Micro: http://tinyurl.com/37khr5.

    Velocity Micro C90 Ultra
    Core2 Duo E6700 2.67 GHZ
    2GB Corsair DDR2 PC5300 SODIMM
    200GB Hitachi TravelStar 7200rpm SATA
    512MB Nvidia GeForce 8600MGT
    Windows Vista Business

The BSOD occurs frequently when I start up from sleep or hibernation mode. The error is:

    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
STOP: 0x0000000A (followed by four random-looking numbers)

I called Velocity support, and their first suggestion was that the culprit might be Logitech mice (!), that Vista has had problems with these mice, and that I should try an MS mouse. Before researching more and concluding this might be nonsense, I gave it a shot. An MS mouse seemed to help for a couple days, but I think that was coincidence because a day or two later the blue screen was back.

The BSOD happens almost every day I boot up. It'll keep happening almost every time I restart, right after logging in. The only "fix" is to start up (selecting "start windows normally" from the recovery message), and then quickly select "Restart" from the windows menu. If I can get through the first five minutes or so after logging in, I'm pretty much BSOD-free until the next time I restart.

I took it to my local trusted computer shop and they updated the BIOS. Still the BSOD continued. The people at the shop told me that the version notes on the Asus site indicated there were a lot of problems with this motherboard, and they concluded that it was likely a bad motherboard.

I spoke to Velocity again, and they told me the next step was to wipe the HD and reinstall Vista. I'd rather not because it takes forever to reinstall my programs and it would really impact my work (I do freelance computer graphics).

I'm guessing Velocity isn't going to be all that eager to suggest the problem might be hardware.

One other thing: seems like when I first got the machine the fan was loud, and once, when I was running a processor-hungry game, it kicked in like a vacuum cleaner. I haven't heard it run nearly that loud lately, though it does seem to be working (just quietly). Not sure when the change occurred.

I would greatly appreciate any help at all. I've searched a bit, and I didn't see too many references to this particular BSOD. Also, I've scanned this thread a bit, (but it's huge!).

Thanks in advance for any help.

(EDIT: Someone posted a similar problem here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=252195)

    Hello everyone,

I am new to the community and have enjoyed reading many of the posts here.

The question that I have is the following:

I am extremely busy with my a full time day job, night time home business, and volunteer job, plus a family of four with one addition on the way.. ; )

I need a laptop which is a powerful, reliable desktop replacement, that when I do not have the time to tinker with it, will work powerfully and efficiently all of the time, yet, I can upgrade and mod as time provides (which I have little of these days, but enjoy doing these things).

So, as of this year and day, would you purchase the ASUS C90S (I think that I had heard that there is a P on the horizon soon?)?

I need to get the very best bang for my buck, so if there is something different which you would recommend, I would appreciate hearing about it.

I guess the next question is, if you would still recommend the C90S, what options would you opt for?

    I am thinking

    E6700 Proc
3 GB High Quality, fastest supported speed, Mushkin or Equivelant RAM
The latest offered 512MB Video card offered
TV Tuner, do they make an HD Tuner for this?
    Need Wireless N
    Large 7200 RPM HD
Combo BLue Ray - DCD Multi Burner
High resolution Monitor (What is the current resolution supported on the C90S?)
    Gigabit NIC
    etc....

Any recommendations that you have would be appreciated.

I need a laptop which will take a little bit of a beating, and keep on ticking, and will not die from its own heat...

How bad is the fan noise on this thing? I currently have an ECS Green Systems 732 laptop which seems to have a System board problem as I have tried everything including booting from VISTA CD and it will not get past the CRCDisk.sys driver regardless of what I boot from, Hard DRIVE or DVD. Also, the fan noise on this thing is loud, and it would be nice not to have one that loud.

Also, from the sounds of things, GENTECH is the best purchase option? They seem to be out of some of the features that I wanted if I move forward for this laptop. Any other suggestions?

Any assistance/guidance would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you in advance,

    Dave

    Hey Dave,

Yes there is supposed to be C90P on the way witch will be slightly better than the c90s with cpu power, and maybe much better with gpu power if it comes with the 8700gt or equivalent.

Thing is many of us here were pioneers with the c90s being first owners and so we didnt know what to expect, we ran into alot of issues here and there and sorted most out. So we hope the C90P addresses those issues but it may not and also have problems.

So unless your willing to be a pioneer, you may want to sit tight and let somebody else take the journey for you first, if you need something more now than later, I recommend something like the new M50.

Real quick I will hit on what you want and what you can get.

E6700 is supported but a waist of money, the c90s can auto overclock the cpu to up to 2.93ghz the e660 goes to 2.87ghz in overclock mode while the e6700 is stuck at 2.93, is less than 200mhz worth the extra cost and heat? Its not.

3gb of ram, yes the c90s supports 3gb of ram, but it does not support 4gb of ram one of the things the c90p will add is full 4gb ram support.

Video card, for a laptop believe it or not ram on the video card is not so important, speed and the buss is more important than raw memory amount and the trend that has been set is that all the 512mb cards use slower memory than there faster 256mb brothers so they end up being the lesser performer. The 8600gt 256mb GDDR3 was "discontinued" for the c90s but you may be able to find it still, I used both that card and the 512mb DDR2 version and I prefer the later due to driver issues.

TV tuner, you can always get an external one, however I think there is a part for the C90S that you can get for an internal one because I believe it was released with one overseas or was supposed to be.

It has the newest wireless cards' intels new one with draft N standards.

HDD, you can put any drive in there you want. I have a 250gb 5400rm drive, and would recommend that or one of the new 300gb 5400rpd drives. The 7200rpm drives have smaller storage space, more cost, and are barely faster.

There is a BR drive you can get for the C90S its a separate part and like all things blueray expensive, so I cant recommend it.

1680x1050 pretty much the highest res 15" around minus the rare 1920x1200 you can find in some like alienware but thats really too high for a 15" and would make text hard to read.

    Has gigabit NIC

As for where to buy, Yes I recommend Gentech. Thats where I got mine from and Ken from there is a regular on the forums here. He has never failed to go out of his way to help the customer and is always giving us the inside edge with personally giving us new bios and other stuff of that nature. When it comes to a new product definitely buy from somewhere like this so you can communicate and resolve issues, if you go retail once you buy it, all the problems are in your hands only pretty much.

Thank you ViciousXUSMC, for the very lengthy and informative reply! Much appreciated! Were/Are you in the USMC or are you just a USMC gamer? I was in the USAF for nine years and have been in the USCAP for over 24 years. Thanks for serving! My birth father was in the Marine Corp in Nam, my step father was in the Army during Nam era, he wont talk much about it, but he is one hell of a sniper, so I have my suspisions there. Grandfathers- 1 Army Air Corp Bombardier over Pacific, on Army soldier, Italy, Austria and Germany raids. Uncle in the Navy, so on and so on....

In any case, is there any other laptop out there that is as good a bang for the buck?

Any problems when overclocking the E66? Any modding that needs to be done other than the stock cooling, etc, tio keep it stable?

    Thanks again,

    Dave

Dependes on the current cpu/gpu load, gaming usually makes them run loudest but since you are gaming anyway you wont notice it...

anyway were not talking turbine loud, just louder than laptops with less fans

for the e6600, there's no need for modding to oc, the cooling system works great.

Follow the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Don't panic. Check the sound options for Right/Left balance, update or roll-back your sound driver, restart a few times, and last, check the physical connections on it. I hope it is something simple. :D

Okay, start with the basics first. Remove the AC Adapter and battery and push the power button down for about 30 seconds. Next plug the AC adapter and battery in and when the computer begins to boot enter the bios and select "load factory defaults" or whatever it says that is close to that.

If it still doesn't work after this then log in to Windows and go into the device manager and look under the menu for "Batteries". Delete the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" and reboot. Windows will reinstall this upon start up. See if those things work first and post back.

    Hello.

I am trying to find the latest drivers/applications for the following so that I can finish getting my laptop working, I am using Vista 64 Ult :

UPEK Fingerprint Scanner - I believe I found and installed the latest drivers from the UPEK site, however, I cannot find the new Protector Suite QL they reference available for download at the MFR site (ASUS).

4965 AGN Drivers/Utilities - I have still had no luck getting this thing to connect to any network. At home I have a WRT-350N

    BlueTooth Drivers

    TV Tuner

    etc

Any other updated drivers or apps someone could point me to.

    Thank you,

    Dave

I went to buy AS5 today but the only thermal paste the shop had was the Intel OEM one. I don't think that's any better than the one that came with my GF6600 aftermaket cooler.

Radioshack Canada was bought by CC and transformed in CCs (They are called The Source by CC though) so now they don't have that anymore =/

I could buy online.... $12 paste + $15 shipping lol.

I have a problem with my c90s.Its running on the latest bios and i am using 169.09 drivers. It was running fine until yesterday when I put into hibernation mode. Now I have set in control panel that hitting the power button once will make the laptop go into hibernation ( a bad idea I am thinkin now) but anyways I am switchin on my laptop now and its just a blank LCD.Cant do anything. I hit the power button and it just switches itself off. I am not able to reset it . I also tried resetting the battery but to no avail. I can feel the HD runnin and all the lights are also flashin but nothin else. I also tried holding down the power button but it just switches itself off when its on and vice versa.

Is there some other way in which it can be reset? My laptop at the moment is just dead!!

Sounds like your LCD got disconnected or something, I dont think setting the power button to hybernate is the problem at all but just a conincedance.

That function wont even work until your in windows, so @ boot its still just a power button.

Id say hook up to an external display but from my experience the 2nd display wont function untill you turn it on in the display settings in windows.... so that wont work too well.

Can you see anything on the sceen if you look at it in the light (very very dark but a faint image on screen)? maybe just your backlight is an issue.

No I cant see a thing on my LCD screen.
I also tried connecting to my LCD tv via hdmi but no display comes up on the screen either.
Going by my previous experience whenever i connected the laptop to the tv via hdmi the desktop automatically showed up on my tv screen and then that window in which connecting and configuring to external monitors pops up.This is what usually happens but once or twice ( after restarts) I had to set the output manually as well ( by goin into that configuration window )

I suspect some foul play in the hibernation mode only. When I press the power button it turns itself off instantly. I mean does this happen in any mode at all?

This is wat exactly happens :
    I switch on the laptop
Lights come up on the keyboard and a while later whirring of HD starts.
    Blank Screen.Nothing.
Press power button again and it goes off instantly.

I read somewhere that if u reset the ram the computer may wake itself up from a foul hibernation mode. Is this true ? Please help.

This has happened to me 2 or 3 times. I open it and deplug/replug the video card & cpu and then it works fine.

No this was not after a bios flash.

Ok I opened it up and reset the ram , video card , hard disk , cpu ......the only improvement is that on pressing the power button it doesnt go off instantly and I have to press and hold it for it to shut down .

I am now suspectin the LCD. How do I remove and attach it ?
Or is it too complex ? Then I have to take it to service centre.
But I also tried the fingerprint reader some time after boot up and I couldnt hear a thing. That means it never went to windows rite??

One interestin thing I noticd was that the laptop cud not boot from battery when when I removed the 2 GB kingston and left the Elpida 1 gb alone in the slots.........though the other way round the laptop cud boot from battery from the kingston 2 gb ram ....Elpida is not supported ?

Cud any component be fried ?? Please........any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

You could try reconnecting the LCD signal and inverter cables to the motherboard. It's usually not so difficult to do, perhaps removing the keyboard will suffice to get to the connectors.

A next step is to see if the LCD is properly connected to the inverter, and to the signal cable, that's more involved since it requires LCD disassembly.

But if you don't get anything on the external screen, then I suspect it's something deeper than the LCD that is at fault.

Try these two things as well...

Try hitting Fn + LCD to see if it turns the display back on.

Try resetting the CMOS. There is a tiny little button that can be pressed with a paper clip that resets the CMOS. It's located at the button right corner of the laptop. Look hard for it, it should have a tiny symbol indicating it's there.

If your laptop refuses to display an image (LCD and external) and it doesn't boot into windows, then it is more then likely a bios problem. If none of the other suggestions work, I'd have a look at this thread...

Turn the laptop upside down with the ace door still on. Now look very carefully at the bottom right corner and you should see a tiny hole that you can stick a paperclip through. This is the CMOS reset switch.

If the bios chip needs replacing, I'm guessing they'll probably just replace your motherboard since it's most likely soldered onto the board. They won't give you a new unit unless you've got other hardware problems too.

The bios chip is definitely soldered to the motherboard. I went through a bad bios flash about a month ago and had to RMA the unit with Asus. They replaced the motherboard and all is well again.

    Usher,

I would have a look at that thread I linked to you and try those bios recovery methods before an RMA.
