I'm thinking that my problem has to be hardware. I've done everything you have suggested and it's still here. Would you say it's a good idea to send my comp into asus at this point?
-
-
First, on your task manager go to your hardware monitor, then you go to the Disk section and there you can see specifically what the hard drive activity is, and which files its using.
Second, if you are talking about an odd noise, I would just take the back cover off, you leave almost all components exposed and you can turn on the laptop and hear where its exactly coming from... Don't worry, nothing will fall off if you carry the laptop with the cover off, just try not to touch anything
That's what I would do.
Cheers -
Ok, I don't know much about this, but when I went to the resource monitor, and then to the disk drive it shows scvhost.exe (local system network restricted) with a really high read, B/min. Not sure if that means anything. Thanks for input.
edit - Now it's gone, to be honest I have no idea what I should be looking for.
edit - Ok I just got a hang with the resource monitor open, the HD is going crazy when it happens, then it goes back to normal. It seems to be getting worse, now I am getting hangs while just idling at desktop or while browsing the web, I am so worried. -
i know for sure, that vista disk defrag is useless, so open it up, and uncheck the setting for automatic defrag....
also make sure you go to control panel
administrative tools
task scheduler
then on the left explorer window go to
task scheduler library/microsoft/windows/defrag
right click scheduled defrag and then disable it
this should remove the need for vista to constantly want to defrag your hard drives.
also like mentioned earlier, turn off indexing on your hard drives
you could also disable windows defender in the services.msc console -
Cool, thanks for the help. I did all of that , I will wait and see what happens.
-
Update- So after I did those 3 things, I noticed right away that the hd's calmed down. The system seemed to be running smoother. I've gotten through a whole movie without a hang up, which never happened before. I've had no problems , it's only been about 3 hours, but before I never went this long with out a hang up. I'm still a bit skeptical that the problem is completely fixed but so far so good. Thanks for the tips Eddie. I will re post in a day and give an update.
-
hum noob question : how do i update my bios to the 207 ?
-
-
Well, I'm pleased to say my problem is now gone. I'm not sure exactly what fixed it, but my computer is running smooth and the hang ups are completely gone. I just want to thank everyone that helped me and for putting up with me and giving me advice. I can now say that I am a proud owner of a G50V-a1!!

That's awesome .... I'm glad to hear it's not a hardware problem!
-
Well, I got to excited too quickly. It was good all day and yesterday, then I just got a hang while playing warhammer. Back to square one.
-
have you uninstalled the synaptics driver yet?
-
-
My hard drives were going crazy again. I did some research and found other people with the same problem. One person suggested disabling superfetch. I did that and instantly my hard drives calmed down. System seems to be stable at this point. I will update if I get any more hang ups.
Edit - I didn't really know what superfetch did, but now that I am reading up on it, it sounds like it is very useful. Can anyone let me know any drawbacks from having it disabled? My system does seem to be running better , but It could just be my imagination. So far still no hang ups.
Edit - Just got a small hang up. Back to the drawing board. -

Superfetch is sort of like Vista grabbing things it thinks you're going to need and storing them in memory for quicker loadup (theoretically)... but it does have a bit of overhead so it is a tradeoff.
edit: Also did you modify your drive indexing? Try removing everything except the start menu from the indexed locations. I don't feel like typing the directions so I'll just paste them...
# Click on Start button.
# Click on Control Panel.
# Click on System and Maintenance.
# Click on Indexing Options.
# To remove an Included Location, simply click on Modify button, and then untick the checkbox for respective folders under the “Change selected locations” box. To remove indexing on Start Menu and/or Users folder, click on “Advanced” button at Indexing Options dialog or “Show all locations” in Indexed Locations dialog. UAC access request continue required. Click on Start Menu and Users once at “Summary of selected locations” box if you do not see the checkbox for them.
Ganked those directions from:
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/09/17/disable-and-turn-off-windows-vista-search-indexer-and-indexing-service/ -
I think I am just going to send it to Asus now. I can't deal with this anymore, I am at a loss. I really hope they can do something for me.
-

Did you do the indexing tho? That is a definite thing that will lag your computer out. Please try it if not...
-
I think he disabled indexing following a message by another user.
If noone suggested this yet, perhaps you should update your antivirus/antispyware etc. to the latest defs and run a full scan. This sort of thing can be caused by malware.
However, since disabling superfetching/indexing/defragging seems to calm down the problem it also suggests some Vista features going amok... They may be coupled with some bug in applications, or with a fault in the HDD (since other people have those features on and they don't notice these severe slowdowns...) -
-
Free, I think Avira is the best. Paid, NOD32.
-
I did a full system scan, the computer seems free of anything of the sort. I just got a hang while at desktop, like I said in an earlier post the hard drive makes a loud noise when the hang happens. I'm starting to lean towards hardware problem again. I think if I do a system restore , then update the bios and the atk stuff and I'm still having the problem, then it is safe to say it is a hardware problem.
-
Yep.
You could also test your HDD (not sure if anyone already suggested that). Have a look at my Tips and Tricks (signature), "Has My HDD Gone Bad?" -
Hey guys i want ot update my bios to fix the lagging problem but after i download the flash utility from the asus site to use it, it wont work..it downloads fine and i extract it but then it says its an incompatible version..i have vista 64 and i choose that option..any ideas or another link to downlaod it....also do i need to update to 209 bios or update each of them..i.e.207,208,209 or will 209 include all the updates? thanks guys
-
Use the latest version. Also I suggest using EasyFlash (BIOS update utility integrated in the BIOS). Have a look at my BIOS guide (link in sig).
-
Hey E.B.E, I am having problems with my Direct Console now and i was wondering if you could help? Everything was working fine before but then i updated my bios to 209 and now the small lcd just displays the 'Repulic of Gamers Logo and slogan'
Here is a list of the things i did before it stopped working:
From your Optimising Vista post in your sig i did:
Uninstalled Asus DataSecurity Manager, Asus MulitFrame, Asus Live update and Norton,
I then rebooted to complete the changes,
I then downloaded and installed AVG 8.0.
Rebooted.
Turn Off Unused Windows Features (Tx and Rep LIVEFRMNYC)
unselect 'Indexing Service, Remote Differential Compression, Windows DFS Replication Service, Windows Fax & Scan.
Downloaded CCleaner and ran it.
Rebooted.
Downloaded the 209 bios.
and flashed it using EasyFalsh and directions from your post in your sig to how to do it!
everything worked perfect. Expect DC button didnt work. LCD worked as normal , ie battery meter, cpu usage, ram usage.
Restarted
Button still didint work. LCD just showed Battery meter, nothing else.
Downloaded and installed new ATK drivers from Asus Site.
Restarted.
Still the same, now LCD just shows Republic of Gamers logo and Slogan,
reinstalled DC, Restarted, Still the same.
Any help would be appreciated. Also sorry for the long post but i wasnt sure if it was the new bios or the changes is made that have caused the problem.
Thanks -
I bought the Asus G50V a month ago and am experiencing the random freeze problem. I have so far installed BIOS 209, updated VGA drivers, reinstalled vista 64, disabled the synaptics pointing device in the startup BIOS menu, disabled indexing, and uninstalled the synaptics drivers. I am still experiencing this problem.. anything I have missed?

Maybe I didn't do it right, but the problem is still here. Just uninstall ATK hotkey and ATKOSD2, then install the new ones from the applications in the zip files?
-
Not sure if someone has already tried this, but can anyone direct me to a good DOS boot disk that will work on the G50V(t)? I have never had the keyboard lag issue, but the S+D+Space combo problem is still there after I went to BIOS 209. I noticed that the problem also occurs under Expressgate, so I wanted to test it in the purest OS possible to confirm that it is a hardware/BIOS problem that only Asus can fix.
-

save yourself the time, its a bios issue.
more than that, they have done _nothing_ to change the keyboard driver in the bios since 203. modules the same throughout.
edit: the dos files can be extracted with 7zip and probably any other archive tool. -
Can someone tell me a way to test this freeze issue? I've tried playing music while holding down the "w" key in Notebook for 30 seconds. That is the only way I've read to test it. Most times, for me, it happens during movies at unpredictable times so I'm not sure the best way to test.
The reason I ask is I've spent all day reading this and other forums, and I think my combination may have actually solved this issue (on my machine, for the moment, at least) Perhaps this will hold out through testing and we can put this LAME bug behind us. -
Saw something about symantec a few pages back, is this something that could be causing hang ups? If so do I have to uninstall Norton antivirus?
-
I think it's a good idea to remove Symantec regardless. There is a handy .vbs file that lowers the priority of the touchpad .exe's. The touchpad is currently the most notorious suspect of this problem. This fix file along with the latest intel driver has cured the problem on my G50V-A2 (crossed fingers).
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3923293&postcount=55 -
Well, I've uninstalled Norton, but it hasn't removed the issue of the hang ups. As for the .vbs file, that shouldn't be necessary since I have the touch pad disabled through the bios, right? I don't see either SynTPEnh.exe or SynTPHelper.exe processes running in the task manager.
Sorry to ask so many questions, but where can I find this latest intel driver you mention? Do you mean ATK hotkey and ATKOSD2?
Oh, and what do you guys use in place of Norton for virus protection? -
The Intel Matrix Storage Manager is what I was referring to. Read the top post here:
http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx...5753234&board_id=3&model=G50V&page=2&count=14
You're right not to worry about the touchpad if it's disabled via the BIOS, and not seeing the 2 correlating processes confirms this.
Sadly, when I was switching between HDMI and LCD a few times, the video that was playing while I was switching froze for a split second. It was short, but unmistakable. Pretty annoying, Asus. Wouldn't you say?
I use Avast! Home Edition (free) -
Oh yeah, I updated my Intel SATA AHCI Controller to version 8.6.0.1007 with that a few days ago. Still having the problem
-
I was having the same problem, if you go back 5 pages or so you will see the posts. The problem is now gone, I am not sure what exactly fixed the issue, but the last things I did were update the bios to 2.09, updated the ATKhotkey and ATKOSD2. I also disabled superfetch and indexing on my drives. I'm not sure if it was a combination of all those things or what, but the issue is now completely gone.
Edit - I'm also pretty sure the synaptics drivers have nothing to do with this issue, so I wouldn't bother disabling them. -

It's important to install the new drivers after the bios upgrade.
Bios 209 and atk drivers:

Hi guys,
When i was using the 203 Bios i was getting ramdom hangs, maybe 1 every hour or so..The screen would freeze and sound would loop for 1/2 secs..Tried to move the mouse with the touchpad during the hang but it didnt move..
Update to 209 Bios and update my ATK drivers hoping that this would solve the hangs..now i get the same hangs but also sometimes i get similar hangs but the touchpad still works during the hang..
Any suggestions guys?
Thanks -

Yeah I've done everything on this thread, and I'm sending mine to ASUS for repair. Unfortunately, it looks like you have the same problem as me Alyxis.
-
A guy on the asus vip board posted a possible fix...
I have tried this and i have not had a freeze since i did it...
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2101
This did the trick for me, i have not had a freeze for 2 days now...
all credit to donovan (asus vip board) -
sorry i'm not quite following. All we have to do is update with that link? or do we need to delete folders as well
-
You have to delete the reg key/folder as well...
Im not sure if it works if you use RAID... -
The Chacer/donovan solution has worked for me so far. Thanks to Chacer and all the people who put effort into finding a fix!
*edit* Sorry if this thread is too old for a reply! -
I've tried this too and no freezing yet..Its only been a day so i'll post back again in a few days if its work for definate..thanks..
Edit:
Ok its been 3 days now and i've been on my laptop alot and i've had ZERO freezes...It fixed my problem!!!!
Thanks very much + Rep!! -
Excellent work guys.
I installed the latest version 8.8.0.1009 for my OS Vista 64.
I didn't bother deleting the Parameters in the registry- I left that alone.
I then gave the computer the ultimate torture test- played a game I knew would freeze in random places; and then did some editing and writing on my laptop.
Zero freezing and keyboard lag issues. -
I'm assuming you can't do this if you are running RAID?
-
Thanks I'm giving this a go as I'm experiencing random freezes.
I've installed the latest matrixStorage software and when navigating to the registry location I found two entries that contain the parameter folder:
iaStor
iaStorV
should I delete the parameters folder from both or just from iaStor?
thanks a lot
Luca -
hey, i have been having the same issues, have downloaded storage manager and deleted the Iastor parameters, still freezes..... i also have a IastorV folder with a parameters file, do i delete that also?
(i dont know heaps of stuff about computers) but how do i know if i am running a RAID system? i dont think i am but this may be why it didnt work.... how can i tell? i bought the laptop new and havent done any major work on it.
Thanks alot,
Felix
