Both the keyboard and mouse feel snappier after a BIOS upgrade, but I am still suspicious the keyboard isn't picking up 100% of my keystrokes.

FYI when I upgraded my BIOS I got the Windows 7 black screen of death. All I had to do was restart in safe mode, let it install a few drivers, then boot normally. It worked after that.

@pexor: Where did you grab the BIOS update?

@AmazingGracePlayer: sorry for asking all these questions in you thread. If you want me to stop, I'll stop.

EDIT :mad:pexor: I'm gonna go and guess asus live update. Arg, I need to reinstall that.

Try deleting the Synaptics touchpad drivers and using the Windows default drivers.

Keyboard lag is a known issue.

@Thunder: I got the BIOS update from the ASUS website for the N81VP motherboard. It seems to be working but it's hard for me to recommend that you do the same thing since it's not explicitly for our notebooks. Just be careful and all that.

@dtwn: I uninstalled the touchpad driver and disabled it in the BIOS. It seems to be working fine now, the typos I'm seeing are likely due to me as I'm still getting used to laptop keyboards.

@Jeff, this notebook is an incredible value from newegg for $700 AR. No other laptop in that price range compares, so I'd recommend this. Just uninstall the touchpad driver I guess. Even when it wasn't working 100% of the time, it was at about 98-99%.

Newegg's $100 rebate is good on purchases from 12/23 to 1/31.

I've been playing Batman and TF2 with this thing on my lap and the heat doesn't bother me. I haven't done any objective tests.

cool, actually here in canada I am considering the Asus X83VP-A1, I can get a really good price on one, the cpu is slightly faster and a 500 gig hard drive, I never had an Asus laptop before......worth it for under a grand?

CDN? Certainly. The CPU is a fair bit faster, cooler and offers marginal gains in battery life.

It will make a difference for battery life and screen brightness, maybe durability and life of the display. I don't think for anything else.

Mine has gone up to 3.5 hours. If you want 6 hours you'd probably want a 9 cell battery, or a spare battery.

looks like the rebate has been extended to 1-31-10.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220635

i've been watching prices on and off for the last year or so and this seems like just about the best deal i've seen without going refurb or open box.

i was beginning to think no manufacturer would ever skimp on the screen size to bump up the gpu... and a 7200 rpm hd taboot... i'm sold...

has anyone gotten the thing to work with klipsch promedia ultra 5.1's? iirc they had a toslink input but i never had to use it and it's been a good 5 years since i hooked them up and had to look at the ports :p

wait now, so the X83VP-A1 with faster cpu has a bigger hard drive, but its slower?!?! well then how much diff would that make, I was pretty much sold on the A1 to be honest, lol

Let me just check if this is what you're saying

The A1 has a larger HDD = true

The A1 has a slower HDD based on rotation speed = true

The A1 has a faster CPU = true.

Just so you know, larger, but slower HDDs can demonstrate similar performance to smaller but faster HDDs. It depends on the models in question.

    couple questions:

    1) is it possible to add a ssd later, or would i have to swap it out with the current hd?

    2) does this cpu/gpu combo have the balls to capture gameplay in online games? (assuming 1280x800 res and low settings)

You'll have to swap. There's only 1 HDD slot.

Depends on the game. The CPU might hiccup, especially if it's the T6600.

Hi there. I am a new to this site.

I am also currently considering getting either the X1 or A1. X1 is cheaper, but the taxes and shipping fee made the cost difference much more insignificant. A1 has a better processor and a larger HHD - which I have no use for. I want a new laptop for school and some bit of gaming. If there is any other points that made A1 superior to X1, please enlighten me. :)

One thing that I need to ask is that I noticed some of the Newegg reviews claim X1 came with a 4670 instead of a 4650. Is that true for the owners of X1 here? What about A1? Any owner of A1 here care to confirm it?

Sorry for the questions. Thank you! ^^

The 4670 is a higher clocked 4650, you would be able to overclock the 4650 to 4670 levels without much of an issue.

If the prices are close due to tax, I would definitely consider the A1 significantly. If necessary, sell off the HDD, and purchase a smaller SSD when you have the funds. Since you do not seem to require large amounts of storage space, the SSD might be a viable option for you. In addition, the X1 model comes without bluetooth, I am not certain if the A1 model has bluetooth.

Thank you for the quick reply. :)

By the way, I was just reading the Newegg tax policy. In it, it specifically listed some of the states out, but Michigan, the state that I live in, isn't one of them. Does that mean I don't get charged for tax? If that's the case, X1 is my destiny.

If that's the case, you don't get charged for tax. Incidentally, the A1 version is also for sale at Newegg.

Nah. The extra $100 doesn't really bring in a significant boost in performance. I'll stick with X1. :)

If it's like the 4670 I got my my N81VP-D2, it will be downclocked to 4650 levels....to this date I haven't been able to overclock it with any utility under W7 x64. Some have done it under 32-bit.

How if flying around in Northrend? Do you have maximum draw distance?

I have a Studio 13 w the 9500 and I have to lower the draw distance and everything on medium to get about 30-50 frames. I'd like to max it out.

I've wondered the same question and here is what I found out: Its actually an N81V series notebook, or at least thats what the box and the stickers on it say. But thats not going to help you find it on their web site because those machines dont have the same spec's.

I always to put shadow to low ....since that is the one that eats a lot of resources.....screen shots speak for everything.

Here is a pic when I changing the effects (still 31 FPS)

After changing it (dropped to 15-17 FPS)

Flew outside dalaran with everything on (20-24 FPS)

Notice how much more FPS I got after turnning the shadow off ? (42-50 FPS)

    Hey guys and gals,
I'm a noob to NBR and had a question.

I just received the Asus X83VP-X1 from new egg last night and was wondering how I should partition the hard drive? They put 75gb for the OS, 230gb for data and 14gb is partitioned for nothing which makes no sense to me.

Also what should my pagefile size be? It is set by Windows to 4gb and was wondering if I should change it to minimum 4gb and max 6gb.

Also a big thanks to AmazingGracePlayer for writing a great review. You really gave me confidence in my purchase.

X83 is a led back lit ... the N81 D2 have BT and finger print in which case I find it useless for myself (just personal choices ....since you can really go around the finger print secruity ez ) . The bag and the mouse....they are junks to me since I have way too many computer bags and rats...hehe
