Check on page 4 or 5 of this thread and it tells how to re-partition your hard drive. I got rid of the extra partitions.

Not all of the X83's have a LED screen. I have the X83vp-x1 and it is doesn't have BT or the LED screen, but for $699 and great performance, I'm not complaining.

Just because it's not listed doesn't mean it doesn't have one ....even my A1 don't have the BT ... But I am sure both X1 and A1 = led screen ... Just check this model number

N81H95Vp-SL Rehanna This is the real model number for X83 series..

yup, saincteye is right, my laptop does have LED backlight even though newegg's specs doesnt list it but there is a sticker on the laptop saying it is indeed LED, woohoo..now I don't feel as bad...but i sure hope there's not huge diff between a 2.2 and a 2.8 ghz cpu :D

ah well, what can i do but just enjoy it..Dragon Age about to be installed!

hmm T6600 and T9600 ...yeah you will notice it ...2mb and 6mb .... but not too much as long as you keep it low since most games now days are more graphic card demanding than CPU demanding .

Mine just came in! Pretty well pleased thus far. The only thing that seems to be bugging me is a noticeable vibration. Anyone else experiencing this? It's not rattling or anything, but with the laptop sitting in my lap or with my palms resting on the surface, I can definitely notice a vibration (moreso than I have ever felt in either my Dell Latitudes).

Hey guys, I am looking to to buy this laptop. I am wondering will it run any of the modern games(crysis, dragon age, fallout 3) on Medium quality.

Also is this laptop significantly better then my current http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220636&Tpk=Asus K50

My wife needs to buy a laptop, she does not need a laptop priced more then $600, so I am wondering does this ASUS X83VP-X1 worth an extra $300 upgrade over my K50AB.

    Thank you in advance

just got this laptop today from newegg and had a few questions for everyone.

1)Have anyone tried registering for Accidental Damage Warranty? Keeps saying my S/n is ineligible for it even though it stated clearly on the box.

    2) I just had the computer today and it crashed twice on its own. Just completely powered off and restarted? Has this happen to anyone?

    3) I cant seem to change the partition of that 14g hd, Got the 75 and the 200 one to 275 but cant seem to do anything about that 14g. any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.!

    1: My A1 is registered ....don't know X1

2: RMA it to newegg....it might be a bad unit

3: I think the 14G are the hidden recovery partition.

Bump. Anyone experiencing this slight vibration? I think it might just be the fan never turning off (and I haven't been able to find any way to control the fan speed).

I am in CA, consider the heavy tax, I discard newegg and go for AMAZON's ASUS X83Vp-A1 which comes with P8700 CPU and it says with Bluetooth. I think the FSB is also 1000MHz compared to X1's 800MHz.

If I get X1 from newegg, the total cost to me is $792 after rebate (with tax+shipping), I get X83Vp-A1 from AMAZON with free shipping, no tax , total cost = $835 after rebate. Hope the $40 difference is worth for the CPU upgrade and the bluetooth.

I need a powerful gaming Laptop for next 2 years, checked some new released Core i3 laptops before, looks like i3 is not as powerful as P8700, or maybe just equal, and i3 laptops rarely come with 1GB video RAM, although INTEL built graphic engine into i3, a gamer would not rely on that anyway. Gamers would always need a powerful Video card . ASUS's 1GB HD4670 Video card is definitely an eye-catching value for me.

Waiting for my X83Vp-A1 now ....

    It was this:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...&AID=10603278&PID=3640576&is=REG&Q=&A=details

But it is discontinued now, after like 30 hours on sale. The price used to be 749, then it raised to 799, then it simply discontinued. I was one step too late to purchase it. >.<

BTW, anybody tried to run Fallout 3 on the X1? It is the only game that I am interested in playing at the moment.

Never installed one of these before, all the ones I see on ebay are both bluetooth & wifi. How hard is it to install these and would it interfere with the built in wireless?

...ok guys we really need to clarify this a lot like really a lot , the model number for this laptop on Asus is N81E( flip like one page you will find it). Also I have the A1 with me right now ...I don't see any BT...unless it's disable in BIOS( not showing up @ Device maneger) . I don't think there a BT but instead a infared reciever for Asus remote controls ...

    Network Adapter list

    Atheros AR928X - Wireless adapter - I think it's a mini-pci card...maybe have to open it up and check.
Microsoft Virtual WIFI Miniport Adapter - Win7 thing
Realtek PCIe GBE Family controller This is the ethernet port

I opened mine up and there is only 1 mini-PCI card slot ...which is the Atheros Ar928X wireless network card... if it's indeed there is a BT adapter that means you only get the Bluetooth + 802.11 B/G .... I rather have B/G/N than BT+b/g ...since BT 3.0 is on horizon and N router is becoming more available/cheaper

so would it be pretty easy to just swap out the mini-pci card for one with bluetooth? Do you think compatability would be an issue?

After researching laptops for the past couple of days, I finally pulled the trigger on this one from Newegg. I'm currently using a 3 yr old HP dv2100 which has served me pretty well but it has pathetic battery life...1.5 hr. in low power mode, it's not very fast, and it's a hot plate.

I was really looking at getting an Asus 13" or 14" UL model but after a trip to Best Buy, I've come to the conclusion that chiclet keyboards are definitely not to my liking.

Not sure if I'm gonna like the blue umbrella color scheme, but all the pluses out-weight that and from what I can conclude, this is the best bang for the buck right now w/ the $100 rebate making it $700...

Is it confirmed that the display is LED backlit?

How's good are speakers?....are the fairly loud?

Is the touchpad a multi-touch one?

Looking forward and excited about getting this bad boy!!!!

yes the display is LED backlit says it on the sticker. Speakers are decent but it is located at the bottom. Not sure about multi-touch.... i don't think it is. Let me know if ur serial is eligible to apply for ADW (accidental damage warranty) when it gets in. Having problems with mines.

Speaker's aren't loud... For iTunes, if you put the volume up half way it should be more than enough, but for movies and such (which you shouldn't be watching through built-in speakers in the first place), having the volume on full is not enough.

I purchased this one too last week as it seemed like the best overall package. I had been in the notebook market for a while. Only issue I have with it is the keyboard. There is significant flex, and it feels as if it is only being held down by one screw on the right side. Other than that, it's a great machine.

And I'm not sure if this bothers you guys as much as it bothers me (it bothers me a ton) - palm rest and the back of the screen are fingerprint and dirt magnets! Every drop of oil from my skin and every dust particle from my house flies towards the laptop and sticks to it. And the glossy finish doesn't help - being dirty makes it look like crap while it's impossible to keep it clean unless you don't use it.

I can live with the back of the display being glossy, but the keyboard surround/trackpad area is a defo no-no....my old hp has a eggshell silver finish around the keyboard and it's very good at hiding dust and smudges...

What Asus should have done with this model, way give it a dark blue rough matte finish on the keyboard side...similar to the keyboard itself or bottom sides's texture.....but what do I know, I'm going by the pics in the revues as I just got my tracking number today from my newegg order!!!!....needs to hurry though as my 3 yr. old hp is about to die....gettting very excited about getting this puppy on Wed... and get ready for me to be camping out in this thread for a while after I get it!

You read my mind 100%....I've done some paintwork on guitars..so this might be right up my alley...I'm thinkin' a Thinkpad black type texture and finish only jazzed up a bit with a multi-speck of blue and silver/white....

Thankfully, the fingerprints don't show that much on the palmrest of the N81VP, since it is a light colour.

It's not the color it's the finish that makes the difference. I had a Dell Vostro before, and it never showed any fingerprints or anything because it had a matte black finish. I hated the looks of the finish, but man its practicality outweighed the looks by miles.

I took off the large sticker with the system info, energy star logo, and Windows 7 logo stickers without a problem. There were just too many stickers. The energy star logo sticker left a bit of residue, but I managed to clean it off and you would never even know it was there.

One thing that I can't seem to figure out is how to get rid of the factory (?) created 14.65 GB partition. The directions early on in this thread worked great for the large file partition, but I can't seem to add the 14.65 GB of unallocated space to the main C: partition with disk management or "diskpart" in the command prompt. Has anyone had any luck?

    Hi Guys,

You all were very helpful in my decision on whether to buy this one. I've been researching for a few weeks now and I have to admit this is one of the best deals and values on a laptop. I was looking for something to help me with college and as a gaming/multimedia device in my freetime and there is nothing else out there at this price with such great specs.

I was unsure if it would play upcoming games like Mass Effect 2 etc... until I found this video review which shows that it does:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bA-USnTJQ94

I still haven't received it in the mail yet but hopefully in a few days I will. I'm also curious about Bluetooth connectivity but it's great to know that it has 5 USB ports.

Warning: I deleted the 14.65 gb partition and it said the OS was missing. The way I got rid of it is reinstalling windows 7 with the disc that came with the laptop. I now have 1 partition of 300gb.

Well, I received my Asus X83VP-X1 yesterday from Newegg via UPS. I was a little peaved to find it setting on my front porch when I got home from work. I was excited to see it there but Ups seems to take some risks with potential theft.

Firstly, boy am I glad I ordered this when I did from Newegg as it is now marked as unavailable....I don't know if it is available anywhere else...if not, I fear this thread may sink into oblivion...hope not. I hope for others that Newegg will get some more of this model in as it is without a doubt the most powerful quality laptop for the money right now....ie I knew this deal would run out quickly...

Second, has anyone successfully gotten their rebate back yet? If so, could you post exactly how you did it as I've been very unsuccessful at getting rebates to work....there's always some little thing I do wrong and the manufacture wiggles out of sending it to me.

Third, What I've done so far in the first 8 hrs of usage..
Booted up for the fist time...first time for me with Win7...very easy initial set up of computer and Wireless lan...prompts for password to your secure wireless hub and you're good to go.

Prompted to run the AI recovery burner, so I went ahead and did this and burned the four dvd's....this was agrivating in that it took almost 2 hrs to complete.

The network prompted me for a password to access my other laptop so I used a SD card to copy browser bookmarks from my old HP laptop....glad the Asus had an SD card slot.

Installed Firefox, Java, DUmeter, Free Download Manager, PitchDark skin/theme for Firefox, Google toolbar, 7Zip, Media Player Classic x64, uTorrent, Winamp, Real Player, Nero, and Forte's Agent Usenet/Email proggie.
Does anybody have any must have apps/utilities that they can recommend?

I haven't ran any of the cds that came with it....is there anything on them I need to have?

On the flip side, is there anything I need to uninstall?....I haven't activated the Trend Micro Security Suite yet...is the Microsoft security good enough or is there a preference on a good free security program?
I'm probably going to uninstall MS Office...anything else?

    Forth, Initial Impression...some musings...

I really like the display a lot more than my old one, HP dv2000 circa 2007. It is very nicely illuminated and seems to have a soft color palette to it that is easy on the eyes...ie the whites have a soft bluish hue to them and aren't the blinding yellowy ones that my hp had....less eye fatigue. The bezel is huge and if the real estate could be reclaimed by the display, this could be a 15 incher.

I was a little worried about the color scheme of the unit but it basically looks black/super dark blue to me...you cant really see the umbrella or the speckles much. Like others have stated it is a smudge and dust magnet.

Trackpad: It just okay...would have liked it better if it were set down a little more delineating the edges to make it easier to find the vertical scroll. I wish it had a little on\off button on it like my HP does. Is there a quick easy way to turn it off/on for when you're in typing mode?
The left/right mouse buttons are fine with me...I don't mind the pressure needed or the click they make.

I hate the function key being where ctrl should be as I'm a big keyboard shortcut user.

Heat: Don't know about gaming, but for general usage, this thing is very cool running...it doesn't even get warm...there is just a small amount of very slightly warm air coming out of the vent on the right side.

Battery life: Sorry haven't tested off the power cord yet..I don't like the power cord being attached in the back of the unit...going from lap to table it tends to get under the unit making it a burden to deal with...would have preferred it on the side.

I like the keyboard..mine seams sturdy and tight...however as I type this it has jumped out of the reply text window several times and I've had to refocus the cursor back into the text box... probably the active trackpad being bumped or something???

The sound is barely adequate at best...I don't like the speaker placement on the bottom front. The speaker annoyingly vibrate the palm rest area...I like to listen to podcast and online vids, so I wish the sound was just a tad louder and the speakers were on the upper corners so they directed the sound upwards and outward instead of downward and into my lap...they might be better with the unit sitting on a desktop but I use my laptop in my lap 95% of the time.

Overall, so far I'm quite happy with this unit...haven't ran any games yet...to be continue....

Is the "recovery disc" that came with an an actual windows 7 install disc? I ask because I want to do a fresh install on a larger hard drive and left all the manuals and discs at home and am now living overseas? Only thing I know to do now is use the 4 recovery discs which makes the dumb extra partition, etc.
