I simply cannot oc this gpu. I try to disable ulps in trixx and restart, and it still says it's enabled. I got fed up, edited it off in registry, still said no. Restarted, it is enabled again. What the hell.

Trixx doesn't work right. Use MSI Afterburner. As long as drivers support overclocking you can do it in Afterburner.

I know this is an older post, but I really think that throwing in an SSD as a second drive would be the main upgrade I'd like to do. But $50 just for the caddy is a bit much...

Does anyone know of any cheaper caddys the allow you to use the same bezel from the current optical drive?

UPDATE: I *think* the pictures in this one are trying to show that this is possible but I can't tell for certain: SATA Caddy on eBay

Sorry if you feel you're being ignored, it's just that we discussed that only a few pages back. Some driver versions will say "6600/6700 series" others will just mistakenly call it a 6750 as that is the most common card with the same core.

The drivers do not differentiate between them because both contain the Whistler Pro core and use identical drivers.

anyone know if the igp can be overclocked ?

for stuttering...... someone be a guinea pig and try underclocking the 6650m to 450mhz.
I'm curious whether setting similar clocks will result in better visual performance.

    damn. that's cheap.

Probably because it really is a 6750m, just with GDDR3 instead of GDDR5? I know, I know, that's why it's a 6650m, but it really is a 6750m GDDR3 so it's just a case of the the drivers' moniker for the card reflecting as such. :p

Let me help you out. You WANT the Switchable GPU to be set to High Performance for DX:HR, otherwise performance in Crossfire will be crap.

    Follow these steps:

How to get the best FPS in Deus Ex Human Revolution on the Asus K53TA (written by me, of course)

Install Catalyst 11.9 RCx or 11.10, even 11.8 if you don't want to use those two. Install 11.8 CAP5. Go to CCC. Set Vsync to ALWAYS OFF for both the 'power saving' and 'performance GPU's (i.e. the iGPU and dGPU). Ensure that Texture Filtering Quality/Catalyst AI is set to the middle setting, AKA 'Quality.' Set Mipmapping to 'Quality' as well.

In DXHR, make sure Triple Buffering is off, Tesselation is off, and everything else is set to 'Normal'. Turn off AA if you're using an external monitor at a higher resolution. Set Anisotropic Filtering to 4x (looks nearly the same as 8x/16x but performs 3-5 FPS better).

Optionally, setup a RadeonPro profile for the game, follow my directions, and add in the AF/Trilinear Optimizations, Large Surface Format Optimization, and disable Aero.

Oh, and finally, make sure Crossfire is enabled. :)

Doing these steps are what got me 40-60 FPS constant @ 1600x900 on Deus Ex HR. After the latest patch, there was almost no stutter to speak of.

I tried to use afterburner, but it just crashes like my ulps is still enabled. I've restarted, set my registry back and forth, it just won't let me OC on these two programs.. grr.

Also, on an unrelated note, when I brought my laptop out of sleep this morning, my touchpad was dead, and my old gaming mouse wasn't working. A system restore fixed the touchpad, but my mouse is still weirding out.. things were working fine last night right after I installed the new drivers so.. dunno.

    I currently have a Corsair 4 GB DDR3 stick (CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9 - http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-DDR3-...1333C9/dp/tech-data/B002YU83YO/ref=de_a_smtd).

Will adding another one make it dual channel? Unfortunately I hadn't realised that this ( Amazon.com: Corsair 8 GB DDR3 Laptop Memory Kit CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9: Electronics) was available and it's dual channel according to Corsair ( http://www.corsair.com/memory-by-product-family/value-select-memory-upgrades/cmso8gx3m2a1333c9.html).

So, will adding 1 more stick of the 4 Gb one make it dual channel? Or do I have to buy the pair to get dual channel?

I'm using Natty Narwhal 64 bit. Initially works only with VESA drivers (no open source support for it in Ubuntu 11.04). But then you can install fglrx using instructions from here ( http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Natty_Installation_Guide).

I'd recommend downloading catalyst 11.8/11.9 from the AMD site and installing that yourself instead of using Ubuntu's restricted drivers option because that installs catalyst 11.4 (which does not identify the dedicated card and hence uses only the integrated card) and seems to screw it up so that installing 11.8 becomes difficult.

Also, note that Ubuntu 11.10 beta does NOT work (no display) since it uses the open source drivers and linux kernel 3.0

Linux 3.0 seems to have some regression where the display doesn't light up.

i added a 4gb g skill, as others have too, and i believe it made it dual channel. it really made a difference in games for me.

i've installed the 11.10 preview over the 11.9 asus chipset and deleted my 11.8 cap5 profile. i seemed to have gained 5-7fps according to fraps in deus ex and dead island...could also be the cooler weather though ;)

slowsky, did the SSD help you with fps in any games or did it just decrease loadtimes? Also,The bios or CPU-Z should be able to show if you are in dual channel configuration or not. In my experience if you enable dual channel at the BIOS and dont have the properly installed DIMMS then you will get BSOD very frequently.

    that's hardly little brother.
That's the black sheep, gimped and stripped.

ssd is not supposed to give you frame rate increase. only load times.

this unit is set on auto ram config. Pretty much any ddr3 stick so far can be stuck in here, and it will adjust clocks and go into dual channel mode.

    Using CPU-ID I got 5-5-5-15
HWinfo64 got the results post above.

Also reported it as Samsung M471B5273DH0-CH9
A quick Google shows that to be a new 30nm Samsung low voltage memory module. Saturday I will pull it out and verify but could that explain the timings? I couldn't find any info on the timings by searching but they claim it runs at lower more efficient voltages. Do some/many/ all of you have this memory? I realize that in real world it all may not matter but some seem to infer it does.

I've used the 64 bit version on it. Works well. No open source graphics support so, software rendering only when you install it. Then you can install fglrx to get 2D and 3D acceleration. however, you should install catalyst 11.8 directly rather than use ubuntu's restricted drivers option. see my post on page 152.

Note that this is a good rule of thumb for any newish laptop, as it's often the case that the older drivers, especially in Linux are not ready for the new hardware. +1 rep, good advice.

You're reading it wrong. I have the exact same memory.

The timings become tighter when they run at lower clock speed.

    at 1333mhz, they are 9-9-9-24.

as you can see below, at half speed, they are 5-5-5-12

I tried using both the Samsung and Corsair RAM sticks and I have no idea if it's in dual channel mode. CPU-Z doesn't show channel information for me. Anyone have any other ideas? HWinfo64 also doesn't show anything about dual channel.

In CPU-Z on the memory tab, there is a field called "Channels #" and will say "single" or "dual".

edit: Nevermind, that screenshot was from my desktop. My HP laptop with AMD Llano doesn't show channels either.

I've been getting around 35 fps on medium at 1366x768 measured using FRAPS. The temperature goes up to about 77C. If I set the game to auto it only changes the texture detail to ultra and doesn't really seem to change the performance much. I have vsync and triple buffering enabled which I think cleared up some screen tearing.

I'm using the 11.10 drivers and my specs are all stock except I added 4gb of g.skill ram.

So how do I find out if it's in dual channel then? Will adding any 4 GB stick with same speeds and timings do? Or do I specifically need to go for an 8 GB (2 x 4 Gb ) kit which supports dual channel? Is there any way to test if CPU-Z and hwinfo64 don't say anything?

Perhaps BIOS will tell you if it's dual channel or not, otherwise try Memtest86+. But you will have to install it on a USB thumb drive and boot from it.

any stick of ram will work, regardless of timings.
    you don't need matching sticks.

you can test dual channel by downloading a memory benchmark tool like sisoft sandra.
    you should see increased performance.

    Here's my sandra results-
    http://www.sisoftware.eu/rank2011d/...9b8d9e4d5e1d4e7d1e3c5b78aba9cf99ca191b7c4f9c9
Intel seems to perform way better with the same ddr3 1333 ram.
But something is also wrong with the detected speed of my memory. It reads it as 934mhz, whereas other laptops are read as 1333mhz.

also, the dual channel ddr3 controller is on the cpu/apu itself, so it should automatically switch to dual channel when 2 sticks are inserted.

I did not change any video settings and still only have 1 4 gig stick waiting on my other one to arrive. Honestly this laptop blows my friends mind when we play bf3 beta next to eachother and he's on his $1500 laptop. I just smile

Yeah I third this. I've brought my K53TA over to most of my friend's houses and done the 'in lieu of Xbox' demo and they always go nuts. Dead Island, Deus Ex and Battlefield are all night and day better looking and running on the K53TA than a game console. I get a lot of "Whoa, look at that texture" or "Holy @#$% that runs smooth."

Plus the small form factor and light weight of it compared to most other "gaming" laptops I've seen usually gets attention too. It really is a THIN laptop, barely over an inch, especially considering how many features are packed into it. Works perfectly as a desktop/gaming console replacement at a fraction of the size.

downloaded BF3 and played a little with the settings, so far here's what I like best... I am running 2.3/2.8GHz and keeping below 80C, may increase this to see some increase in FPS

okay tried this again since it's suppose to help in BF3, and I think it did improve performance, unfortunately BF3 servers are inconsistent

Also Ultra enables tessellation FYI. Gonna try on lower texture settings to see if BF3 runs better

Regardless we should post links as to which drivers we actually downloaded... I got mine from guru3d not sure where u guys download yours
