What harm would it do in actually trying what HT suggested?

And listen to Saturnotaku. He's gone through the drill too, and strange things happen over 2.2-2.3 GHz as he's stated. Can't explain it, but best to lower GHz to get best performance as strange as that sounds.

I wanted to let you know that I submitted a request to Asus for a BIOS update that allows manual graphic switching.

Everyone who owns this notebook should do the same. Follow the link in link's signature for the tech support form. Have your system's serial number handy, and type out a polite, but firm message, asking Asus to provide a BIOS and/or driver update that allows for fixed/manual graphic switching. Point out to them that HP and Dell have done this for their customers and that Asus needs to step up.

Newbie here............I cannot get the RAM door off the back! Unscrewed the screw on door but it feels like a latch is holding the door on (???). Not sure if anyone else had this problem.......Looked everywhere for an answer (even ASUS), no luck...

The tabs holding the door down are quite tight. You need to use a flat-head screwdriver and pry it open, starting at the point where you took the screw out. As long as you work methodically, it will come off.

Ok I backed down to 2.4, which runs perfectly fine no dips nothing, even when i leave the other Pstates normal. when running bf3, under the AMD system monitor the 6600m shows 0% while the 6550 shows 100%. This could explain why no matter what settings, I can't get past 10fps. Also, it won't let me pick "High performance" or the other setting. the window will pop up and i will go to set it then nothing appears in the CCC Vision thing.

Probably because you're using the stock Asus drivers, which don't have proper compatibility with the game. Download the official AMD Catalyst 10.10 from here. It's a small program that once you run it, will download the full driver. Uninstall your current display driver and catalyst control panel. Do not uninstall the AMD SMS Bus, USB 3.0, and HDMI audio drivers. These are not included in the 10.10 display package. Reboot when prompted, then install the 10.10 drivers, and you should be good to go.

The asus screen banding fix link on the front page isn't working for me, can anyone provide another one?

Also, I had previously installed the update for this issue, but apparently it didn't stick or something cause the banding is really evident when I watch video--is there anyway to check?....

I installed the new catalyst software, BUT I did do this "Do not uninstall the AMD SMS Bus, USB 3.0, and HDMI audio drivers. These are not included in the 10.10 display package. Reboot when prompted, then install the 10.10 drivers, and you should be good to go."

How do I get those drivers back?

Reinstall them from the stock Asus package. Run the setup program, choose custom install and select only those items. Reboot, and you should be good to go.

Thanks, I guess my first install didn't work too well. For the overclocking/undervolting part, can you explain how I decide what everything except the voltage should be? The % boost, FID, DID?

All I did with the FID and DID was play with the numbers until it reached the frequency I wanted. The up/down percentages are stock, and boost is disabled. My optimal speed is 2.2 GHz, which I lock in when I game and leave unlocked at all other times. I do have the clock frequencies set to ganged based on the highest load core.

As has been said by myself and HT, these machines do some weird things beyond 2.2-2.3 GHz. My system will run at 2.3, but it requires too much voltage for my liking. It also results in slightly lower performance.

if you're never going to use usb 3.0, go with the i5 + gt540.
Overall performance is better, no overclocking limitations, no problem playing opengl.
plus, i5 is still faster than overclocked a6, and runs cool without all the heat during the hot summer.

I still haven't used my usb3 port, and i don't think i ever will. I burn my stuff to dvd, so i never run out of hard drive space.

the only instance usb3 will be useful is if you have ssd inside laptop, and use usb3 external hard drive for storage.

if i had to do it again, i would go intel + nvidia.

I only bought this because of low price and ability to play most (but not all) games.

So has anyone downloaded the ATI 11.10 official drivers from the AMD website? Are you noticing any performance differences display wise or with games? I'm using the Asus 8.863 display drivers still, and I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading to 11.10 (I know the other ones weren't worth upgrading).

But i went with K53ta its cheaper and fits to all odd, costs me 28K~$570
with that openGL setback hopefully temporary and future prospect of better crossfire support. And great for tweaking to fit your need, been running at 700mhz at .715 v 38C (load) at ambient ~30C . for gaming 2ghz @ 1.02v (load) 66C turbo off(effective temp with Gpu Load 77C).
If you like to tweak and tinker in a relatively inexpensive new tech (read AMD) this is your way, otherwise there is a straight forward (NON-Geeky) way of i-5 and Nvidia way which set you back at $735

No accidental coverage from Asus. I bought a Squaretrade warranty with 3 years, including accidental, for less than $100 after a coupon code. If you bought this system on eBay, you can still buy a warranty from Squaretrade, but it will not offer accidental protection--that part is only available if you buy something new from a retailer.

That one used to be sold at Best Buy and was what I owned prior to the K53TA. It was a decent notebook, but it had the weirdest quirk in that the optical drive would power itself on and off at complete random. That's why I returned it in favor of the Asus.

    HELP!

My laptop is not turning on now. When I turn it on the screen doesn't turn on. It's just a black screen. I hear the hard drive trying to spin and then it stops and then out of now where the fan got really loud. I don' know what to do. Is this happening because I undervolted this laptop? Help please!

Have you tried the function and f7 buttons? I know I accidentally turned my screen off and flipped out for a bit until I figured it out. Also, the undervolting shouldn't have anything to do with it.

I run mine topped out at 2.8 with a 3.0 ghz boost. I'm currently testing voltages and plan on publishing my findings here, I still have a little bit to go but, my current voltages top out at 2.8Ghz/1.2 volt, and a 3.0/1.2625volt boost (though these findings haven't been thoroughly tested.) Depending on what I'm running (I game occasionally) the temps do run high (high around 91) sometimes and I have to clock down. But generally stay around the 80's, and I don't play these games hours on end, so I feel okay with it.

    Hello,

i have a problem with the Wireless Console and couldn´t find a answer yet.

I´ve installed a clean Windows 7 with all drivers from the Asus Page. It works all great, but i´m not able to deactivate Bluetooth. The Symbol shows that Bluetooth is off, but my Logiteh BT Mouse is working. I can disable/enable Wireless LAN, but switching on/off Bluetooth has no effect.

    Has someone the same Problem?

that would seem to be the case.

so, a couple more test things: did you try cycling through the monitor settings while the ext monitor is attached? different key pattern on different makers/models but its probably a hold of the Fn key while pressing F4 or F6... should have a monitor icon on the right one. one press should do nothing, the 2nd press should attempt to light up the onboard monitor as well as the ext - both simultaneously. what we're looking for is a flicker or full operation.
Then cycle to the setting that turns off [stops vid from going to] the ext monitor. supposedly you're back to the laptop's own monitor. I would very carefully move the lid slowly to the closed position and watch the display carefully. my guess is somewhere in that cycle of movement you'll see it pop on briefly. if that's the case, then yes, the connector has worked loose.
pull the manual, take it apart, fix it.

hey, I bought this laptop a week ago and realized that the performance during games is absolutely horrible. it is a european model, so radeon 6650 with an integrated 6480 with no crossfire. the main problem is that amd catalyst does not register(see?) radeon 6650. I can see it in the device manager(as radeon 6600m series, the other one is listed as 6400m series), but it seems like that is far as it goes. i tried to update that specific car's driver by right clicking on device manager, but that only made amd catalyst listing the primary chipset as 6400m series rather than 6480g.

I don't know what to do, can somebody please help me? I literally scanned a hundred pages here with no luck :/

What do you mean it does not register?

If you right click your desktop do you get an option "configure switchable graphics"? If so click it and find the game .exe you are going to play and set it to "high performance", that will use your 6650m.

what I mean is that amd catalyst shows 6480g as the primary chipset, and does not even see 6650. and yes, i do choose high performance for games, and it gives really crappy performance instead, which was the thing that tipped me off about the issue. a radeon 6650m does not get 18 fps average for assassin's creed 2 on lowest settings.

How do I fix the connector?
