I would live to be that guinea pig. But I have a few questions.

Do I need to update the power supply if I put the over size screen in?
Also is that the correct screen I link in the last page? Is the Lvds, screen and the the k53ta all compatible?

you definitely do not need a new power supply to run 1080p.

the lvds cable from partstore is from the k73 asus. Since it runs a 1600x900 screen, it must have dual channel lvds. I'm pretty sure that would make it compatible. It is most similar to our k53ta; it has the same cheap 0.3mp webcam, so it must be running off the same type of connector as ours.

G53JW non-3d screen should work. odugeek did it.
pretty much any led lit lcd with a 40pin connector should work.
Our laptops have come with Samsung, LG, and chimei brand panels, so I highly doubt there is a whitelist

Does anyone know where the wireless card panel is for this laptop? I looked in the back if there are any little stickers saying "wireless", but I couldn't find any. I was going to open up the panels, but can't seem to find a screwdriver at the moment :(.

i ran the furmark on the igp, and mine does not do that. Mine shows a smooth line.

your dgpu line looks smooth probably because it does not use cpu paste. I think it uses a thermal pad, so whoever owned your laptop before left that alone, and it is performing normally.

it looks like your igp is throttling. and the temps are pretty high at 85C. Even with my 80 F room temperature, I don't get that high temp on the igp during furmark burnin test

It suggests that the former owner of that laptop may have opened the laptop and repasted the cpu poorly, causing it to overheat and throttle.

you may need to open it and repaste it properly with some quality paste.

I know the straight line you referring to in high performance modem It have something to do with the fact that furmark is opengl burn-in, my dgpu do that too. But my igpu don't do that though.

Hello, I have problems with my k53ta and I thought you guys could maybe help me out.

I have this computer since last Christmas, and it worked perfectly well since one week ago. My computer has always been very hot and noisy when I was playing games, but now it sometimes goes off when I'm playing games. I never made any modifications to it, but it seems it is really too hot.

Can you please help me solve this problem?

Also, pardon my English, I'm french.

Install a program like CPUZ or some sort of stat recorder and measure the temp while playing a game. If you can tell us exactly how hot, that may help diagnose what the problem is.

Also make sure you have the latest drivers and bios... They are constantly changing, so if you have not messed with them since December, then you will be far behind.

    Thanks for reply.

Today I was opened the laptop. And as shown in the pictures below, the previous owner opening also this machine. He broke two plastic hinges/triggers for screws, he lost two screws from GPU radiator (pict a) and also damaged radiator/heatsink (pict b) probably when tried put all together.

In this case I return this notebook on warranty because GPU may be overheated now.

    Thanks,

So, I checked my drivers, and everything was already up to date.

Then I checked my temp and saw that it was really high, so I guess that's the problem.

Also, I've heard of those cooling pads, which are supposed to cool your laptop. Are they good? Which one would you recommend?

Check if cooling system is clean. Maybe from last Christmas lot of dust got to the cooling system.

Also if You have AMD VGA 12.3 drivers than You can notice shutdowns in games (I have this kind of situation only on 12.3 AMD drivers)

@kabal Just find some replacement screw imo ~~ Will ASUS cover those? we are not sure

    @Bakakatorzan I would say do a repaste/cleaning before getting a cooling pads.

what an a**hole that guy was. Lost 2 screws and then returned the laptop.

Do you still have a warranty on refurbished laptop? i thought they only came with 90 days
I think they might deny warranty because it was tampered with. But you can try. They will disassemble it and see the missing screws.

You might be able to order two screws from a computer shop and just fix it yourself. Should be the same M2.5x5 screw.
and you can superglue the broken screw sockets.

I don't think your dgpu is overheating. But your igp is definitely overheating.

Like i said before, you may want to repaste the cpu yourself, then stress test it. the previous idiot didn't know what he was doing. Probably screwed up the paste.

    Thanks for reply Guys.

    I have warranty...till tomorrow :) Also I have already RMA #.
Today maybe I go to local ASUS service.. and will see if they accept my lap.
If not - somehow I handle it.. I know that this (two screws) is not a big deal :)

But my lap was working almost 3 months in this condition.. So I am afraid that maybe igp is already overheated (however till today I didn't noticed artifacts on screen).

cpu and igp have failsafe thermal shutdown, so it's almost impossible to hurt it.

good luck. looking forward to it.
don't break anything when trying to disassemble. Everything comes apart without force. If something is stuck, there's probably a screw. Good thing laptopscreen.com has some videos

Good point. I forgot that in these days all new equipment have protection against overheating :)
Screw sockets I can fix with the help of glue-gun (I already did this kind of things many times and imho works better because is somewhat little flexible).

I repaste it with AC MX-4 today or tomorrow and will see :)
Thanks for suggestion about thermal protection ;)

    Stay tuned..

If you look carefully, you'll that there's no vent around cpu/gpu undeer the cover. So when you'll open it to repaste, dont forget to drills holes in the case to let the cooling pad do his job. I reduce my temps for about 10C with repaste+cover holes

If you put it back together without breaking anything, warranty is still good because they won't know otherwise. If you're real paranoid, wipe your fingerprints as you go

As link said, be very careful while opening. If something isn't budging, there must be another screw. Don't force anything. Also, be very careful with the screen hinges as they break easily.

Its easy to open its like 10-12 screws and you need a credit card to separate the upper ajd bottom piece. A small flat screwdriver is ideal for the tiny connectors that you need to pull too. Remember that you need to lift up the black security pin if you want to pull the connector, and push down to lock it in place.

Guys, need help. As I'm an old readeor of the thread, there was an information that Power4Gear needs to be uninstalled, what I've done... and my USB 3.0 is not workiing, just powering but not rcognized. Howe to make it work, what drivers do i need, and what the process.
Because I've reinstallde AMD chipset but nothing happens :( Thanks in advance

PS by the way after updating bios to the official newest 214 and ati catalist 12.7 beta my index of windows productivity increased from 5.3 to 5.9 prior 5.3 was of Aeo now 5.9 of memory
Now figures are: Proc 6.9, Mem 5.9, Aero 6.6, 3D gaming 6.6, HDD 5.9 (stock one)

    Hello All.

So... on Wednesday I did repaste (CPU, GPU). Now everything works flawlessly. Notebook is much quieter and temps on windows drops 7-10'C. Also I glue together all screw sockets - now my lap is like should be :)
Just played Crysis 2 for two hours and I have no stutter or throttle :)

I add as a curiosity pictures where show that probably previous owner don't clean original paste but only add new (white). I don't know how it would work..

Thanks "link626" and "baiii" for suggestions.. I was ready return my lap to service :)

Damn. that's some sloppy paste work. haha. holy crap!
Even the factory put too much paste on there.

so you got the 2 missing screws too?

You fixed your own pc for a few cents...

Begin by uninstalling your current AMD drivers.
Then, go on the (link) Asus support site for the K53ta and download one of the really old chipset drivers. The drivers on the AMD website are not specific to the K53ta, and do not include the drivers you need necessarily.
When installing, do an advanced rather than express. When you get to the list of drivers to install, make sure everything is checked, especially the USB 3.0 drivers.
After that's done, reinstall 12.7b drivers and everything will work just fine :)

OMG Way too much paste! You only need a thiiiin coat of paste to fill a tiny gap between heatsink and chipset 0.0 And not to mention that some pastes, like arctic silver 5, have some kind of conductivity..

I was wondering.. for all of you who repasted, like me, did you remove/replace the thermal pad on the gpu?

gumba did, and it resulted in bad contact, which overheated the gpu.

i think he removed the pads over the memory chips ?

either way, it screwed up his temps

Yep - I figured 2 missing screws :) So right now heatsink correctly stick to chip ;)

Yes, indeed - it was too much paste :)
When I applying paste, I always use the "drop/dot" method in the center of chip ( How Thermal Compound Spreads - YouTube).

And no - I didn't remove thermal pad.
I left thermal pads on ram chips and "mb chip?" (this one in the middle between CPU and GPU ). Distance between heatsink and chip's is too large to cover it by thermal paste.

Alright, so I searched tutorials on how to repaste, saw bschrib's post, and I think I'll be able to repaste.

I just have 2 questions: What paste should I choose and how much should I apply on my chips?

Hmmm... Has anyone had their overclock stuck at bus speed of 70MHz after restart?

I reinstalled the OS and was setting up the overclocking programs, but neither k10stat or fusiontweaker can make the overclock / undervolt stick after a restart (which I swear they were able to do before reinstallation). For example, it'll be set at 800MHz core speed, 100MHz Bus Speed with x8.0 multiplier before restart, but after restart the Bus Speed goes down to 70MHz (according to CPU-Z) and the core speed becomes 560MHz as a result...

Any help in dealing with this would be appreciated!

:) Pick something that has a bit higher consistency than arctic silver. Will last longer, and not be too unforgiving if you don't get it perfect the first time. Also won't cake and turn into silver dust when the heatsink moves 1mm the first time you throw it in the backpack before it cooled down..

When you use thin creamy paste, you use as little as possible, and use a plastic edge to smear a thin even layer across the chip. If you have more toothpaste-looking goop, you can put on a wad, spread it around a bit with a toothpick, and then squish it out over the chip when you force the heatsink down. Don't need to use too much, though. And use less the smaller the surface of the chips are.

In either case, the point is to get a contact surface between the chip and the heatsink as large as possible. Not to have as much cooling goop as possible between the chips.

Why does my laptop feel hot while I surf the net? When I watch movies it gets up to 54-56°C maybe a little lower, forgot. But is there any way to get the temp lower? When I play games it doesn't get above 82°C sometime stays below 80 while overclocked. Should I not worry about it?

not exactly the same, but enough to guide you.

that's normal. what cpu temp do you get surfing the net? lots of flash player stuff?
if you're watching HD movies, and your movie player is a cpu hog, you could get up in the 50's easily.

I get about 51-53 easily just by watching YouTube videos, but even if um surfing the net it still gets up to 50.

I am using stock settings for my ASUS K53TA-A1. I have played so far various games (Max Payne 3, Crysis 2, Black Ops, Assassins Creed Revelations, Battlefield 3) and nearly all ran smoothly on high settings. I laptop came with 6GB RAM and 500GB/7200 RPM HDD. ATTO/CrystalDiskMark shows that my HDD can reach maximum read/write speeds of up to 100MB/s. I have seen that several other 7200 RPM HDDs can reach read/write speeds up to 140MB/s and am also aware that there are other factors also involved as far as maximum read/write speeds are concerned.

The stock laptop SATA settings are locked to SATA II and I have seen that there is a modified 212 BIOS available that enables SATA III (6.0Gbps) but that also alters the way iGPU and dGPU are put to use. I do not want to change the GPU settings and just upgrade SATA III to see if i get improved read/write speeds or not.

Any ideas on how to do it ?

So in the winter it should be better I assume?

Edit: I idle at about 40C+ with battery saving off and no overclocking or such. I started elevating my laptop at the back so its slanted and it gets much cooler now :). I played bf3 for about 3 hrs with overclock, etc and my temps didn't even go over 80 =).
