    Hi.
I use this USB 3.0 enclosure : Welland External HDD Enclosure

At the beginning I had problems with this enclosure on my K53Ta. All the time enclosure was connecting and disconnecting from the system. After firmware upgrade everything is fine and works great.

What brand enclosure you have ?

Check latest firmware for enclosure at the manufacturer's website. Also check if You have AMD USB 3.0 drivers installed.

As far as I know 1600 isn't supported. You have to upgrade your CPU to 35xx to get it supported.

Just looked. Looks like I'm going to go after a 3510MX after all. Thank you; was just about to put another bid on a vanilla 3500m.

    Hello,

I am in the middle of a vacation right now so I could not read through all of the responses. But from what i saw from your post....

DDR-1600 RAM is not supported on this machine, I believe it only goes up to 1333mhz. (Which means the RAM will fit but it will only stay at 1333MHZ.

The CPU upgrade, yes please let me know how this works out for you!! I was looking over the specs and it did not seem worth it to me with CPU power but I may be wrong about graphics power.

HDD Drive Bay, I have one myself, the one thing I will say is be prepared to take a hit to battery life. With just an SSD in I was getting roughly 4-5 hours on the battery and with the old HDD in the bay I get about 3 hours now. If you are looking for one and not wanting to spend a lot of money on it you should look at this: SATA 2nd HDD hard drive Caddy Adapter for ASUS K53 K53E K53SD Series replace UJ8A0

Best of luck to you and your modding! Take a page from my earlier posts and be very careful and sharpen up your dremel skills.

Let me know exactly what benchmarks you want and I will try to get them for you.

    I also have 8GB 1600MHz DDR3, and I upgraded to a 500GB Seagate Momentus XT 7200RPM Hybrid

According to the diagram here: AMD's A8-3500M Fusion APU - The Tech Report - Page 4 and Wikipedia, the memory controller is on the CPU itself; Wiki states the vanilla A6 and A8 do 1333 and the MX's do 1600. The A8 also gets 80 more shaders than the A6, which looks like a pretty big jump. I can't wait to get out to where I'm going and seeing how much of a change this makes. I know it's supposedly going to be small or even insignificant, but with the RAM bump and everything, I'm thinking there might be some surprises; at least where Crossfire performance is concerned when it's well supported.
As far as CPU power, you're probably right. I hope not, I hope there is some kind of jump and these cores are different, but something tells me they're probably exactly the same with some tweaks. Maybe the MX cores are binned better? I would go to a 3550MX, but I'm pretty sure it's exactly the same as the 3510 overall; just different clock speed.
Also, I may forgo the Dremel for a small holesaw when it comes to the case. Very, very carefully. But, if it turns out like I want, sand down the roughness and there's going to be a really nice hole or two.

I'll run some basic benches on mine soon just so I have something out there, and I'll get my exact RAM and SSD model numbers.
@Zeus: How well does that hybrid work for you?
I want to make some of those smug guys with their lower-end Alienwares wonder why they spent 3x what I did on a computer.

Just curious.....I might do this for my laptop too lol

LOL what really is a shame is trinity is not OC-able. If you can get your llano system to run at 3ghz its pretty amazing. The one downside of this is the fact that I cannot oc and undervolt in linux.

BTW how much are the MX chips?

    AMD A6-3400M vs AMD A8-3510MX

It says TDP 35w for our 3400 and 45w for the 3510mx.. what does it mean? I don't understand what this TDP stand for.. is it like the minimal temperature it will run?

Just to update everyone mine is fried. I pulled the cmos battery and left it over night and nothing. Held the button down and all that jazz still nothing. Press the power button and the light on it flashes for a second and the fan spins for a second and nothing. Guess I need to be in the market for a new motherboard. All the parts seem to be fine like the cpu and everything. I tried to see if there were any visible signs of burning up the motherboard but saw none.

Hmmm...smell it. Seriously. Try turning it on and when it does all of that try smelling it. Smell in the vent.
Also sounds dumb, but, does the power button feel the same when you press it as it did when it worked? That's one thing I don't like about this laptop; the power button feels cheap.

did you modify the bios or anything?

uninstall the drivers from the device manager, and manually delete all the ati* files in the system32 and syswow folders.
    then reinstall.

the bios controls fan speed. not the graphics driver.

I had that happen to me when I reinstalled Win7 onto my SSD. I used DriverSweeper to clean off any old AMD drivers, then restarted and went to the Asus site and downloaded their CHIPSET drivers. Then, I went and installed the newest Catalyst. Windows Update ran, too, so it might have also found something.

I just had a thought: wouldn't an A4, being a dual-core part, be capable of an even higher overclock than an A6 or A8? Look at how the bulldozer processors scale: the lower the number of cores, the higher the stock clock. Will that same principal work with Stars? Two cores; half the thermal output...just a loss of GPU power when Crossfired.

Thinking about getting really hardcore with this now: Heat Sinks | Mouser

Also thinking about installing a second blower, maybe leech from USB and seal off other vents besides the back one, so there is a straight flow of air from the front, over the APU/GPU, and out the back, and throw some heatsinks in there on the pipes and over the chips. Have a switch to turn it on/off (noise)...
Can't be that hard. Might finally have a laptop with GOOD airflow. Not by laptop standards, but by computer standards.

Also really excited about the new FirePro APUs. FirePro HP Sleekbook.

I removed everything and even smelled for something to see if anything was burned but couldn't tell. The power button seems to be working properly as well. I will just get a new motherboard I think.

just curious, what did you guys do in terms of mods (or anything out of the ordinary that you can think of) that would possibly fry your mobo ?

did you guys mess with voltages and stuff ? repetitive bios flashing ?

Mine got total lock up after a bsod when playing d3 at 2.6ghz+Oc'd GPU in summer , I guess the board either cant take the power or heat. Cause cpu/gpu temp should be fine, but I know alot of heat was stacking inside.

Edit: but I am not sure if the CPU is working now since I never really test it.

    I think that 7670M isn't a rebrend of 6650m. I can overclock my videocard to 805\1185 mhz (now use 792\1162). With 2.2 ghz A6 3420M i have over 10000 at stock 1280x768 in 3dmark06. Max temp of CPU - 79 C, max temp of GPU - 77 C (25-25,5 C in room)

I then benchmarked the hard drive and am only getting half proformance and alot of my programs are crashing. I have mono and strept right now so I dont feel like doing all my usual many test and thing cause I am just so tired so i was wondering if any one could help me out for rigt now. Thanks Alot!

Idk how it works for intel, but for us with the a6-a8 we have to OC with a software, not by the bios. BTW good luck OC with bios for a laptop.. the majority are locked by the companies to avoid problems. That was my problem with my last gateway and that's why I've changed. But, I can give you a path for your answer.. google for a software called SETFSB. Hope it helps. For the your iGPU I don't have a clue sorry.
