-
-

and i did read ur post i didnt know if it sent confirmation that the order was passed and ready to ship and then u had to wait a month, or it came right before it ships -

then it takes 2-5days for shipping. -
I'm still waiting for the arriving of my G51 and they will... pfff
-
lol why does it take a month to check?
-
idk...its free so im not complaining. i guess that they have a lot of orders or something. you cant have everything you want can you?

Hey guys,
I am seriously considering the following two options:
Option A. G51Vx-SZ052c (this is a Hong Kong-only spec):
Intel Q9000 45nm "Montevina" Core 2 Quad 2.0GHz w/6MB L2 On-die cache - 1066MHz FSB
4GB DDR2 800
15.4" WUXGA "Matte Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright Screen (1920x1080)
nVidia GeForce GTX 260M 1,024MB PCI-Express DDR3 DX10
1TB HDD (2x500GB 7200rpm)
Blu-ray Combo
Two MP camera
Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit
The street price is around ~19000 HKD which is around ~ 2435 USD
I understand the price is a little high though it has 2x500GB and Blu-ray,
yet I managed to get a special price at 17000HKD (~2180 USD)
Also, it has the white bestbuy lid which I personally favour over the black background with blue stripes version.
Option B. G51j
Processors : Intel® Core i7-820QM Processor, 1.73GHz with turbo up to 3.06GHz
Intel® Core i7-720QM Processor, 1.6GHz with turbo up to 2.8GHz
Chipset : Mobile Intel® PM55 Chipset
Operating System : Windows® 7 Ultimate / Windows® 7 Home Premium
Memory : 2 x DDR3 SODIMM 1066MHz, expansion up to 4GB SDRAM
Display : 15.6-inch FHD (1920x1200) LED-backlit display (G51J)
Graphics Card : NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 260M with 1GB DDR3 VRAM
Hard Drive : 2.5" SATA 250/320/500 GB (5400 rpm)
2.5" SATA 320/500GB (7200 rpm)
Dual HDD Support
Optical Drive : DVD Super-Multi / Blu-ray Combo
Video Camera : Built-in 2M pixel camera
Which is around 1400USD (+ 223 for shipping)
If budget allows (there is still room for upgrading since the G51Vx is 2180USD)
I would upgrade: Blu-ray combo, Ram up to 8GB and maybe one HDD to the new Intel SSD.
The draw backs would be the expensive shipping and the black lid (the same as G51Vx-A1).
Would anyone care to enlighten me on my choices? Should I simply wait till 18th Oct for the details on the specs upgrade costs to come out ?
-
The G51j sounds like a much better deal. You can get a Blu-ray combo drive for $100 and install it in 15 minutes. You can get a 500 GB 7,200 RPM drive for about $100 also and also install it in 10 minutes. Plus it is likely that you would get Windows 7 pre-installed on the "J" saving another hassle.
Ira -
Thanks for your opinion!
For the blu-ray and 500GB 7,200 rpm drives (or SSD possibly), will that be cheaper if I look around instead of directly upgrading in the order?
And will changing the parts void my warranty?
Thanks! -
it appears that it would be cheaper that way. you just have to find the correct bd, any links guys?
as far as warranty is concerned, just keep the old parts handy to swap them out if you need to send in you lappy. -
I know it's too early but Newegg will probably sell the G51J correct?
Anyone know if the cooling will be better, or about the same at the previous G51s? -
I was told the cooling will be the same as G51Vx.
-
Price depends on your seller. Some, like Gentech and Xoticpc will swap parts and charge your the price difference. For example, if the notebook comes with a 320 GB drive, the seller will replace the drive with a 500 GB and charge you the difference in price between the two drives (likely about $50 in this example). On the other hand, some sellers just sell the sealed box from Asus and won't swap parts. In that case, you have to buy the replacement parts. Of course in this case, you still have the original parts as backup or to resell.
Generally, I like to do my own parts swapping. As for the warranty, there is only one place in the notebook with "warranty void if removed" tape and that is for the CPU. Thus, it appears that the user is free to replace all the other parts without risk, but I don't know for sure.

Whats the expected battery life on this?
And does gentech ship to canada? -
Battery life should be about 2 hours with a 6-cell.
-
i doubt you will get 2hrs. the m15x gets ~1.5hrs with a 6 cell and 2hrs with a 9 cell.ZoeyOs said: ↑Battery life should be about 2 hours with a 6-cell.Click to expand...
-
Well, all other G51 models have given about 2 hours of battery life with a 6-cell, so...
-
That is true but we are talking about the mobile i7's and not core 2 duos. They use a bit more power.
-
True, but I suppose with the way it works (lowering clock settings) I figured it could have an expanded battery lifespan under those conditions. But who knows.
-
With brightness turned to the lowest and on power saver mode, I can get a little bit over 3 hours on a full charge. Thats with wifi on too. I have undervolted my CPU and GPU though.ZoeyOs said: ↑Battery life should be about 2 hours with a 6-cell.Click to expand...

Comparing the G51 to the G50 is the heat/cooling about the same or is there significantly more heat on the G51, because of the nVidia 260m then the 9800m?GenTechPC said: ↑I was told the cooling will be the same as G51Vx.Click to expand...

The G50 and G51 have the same cooling, so they're pretty much the same. I recall someone over the NBR forums who had both a G50Vt an a G51Vx swapped cards and got the same temps.Nivaku said: ↑Comparing the G51 to the G50 is the heat/cooling about the same or is there significantly more heat on the G51, because of the nVidia 260m then the 9800m?Click to expand...

If that's the case Cheeseman then I might just get the Asus G51J then, for me it's still between the m15x vs G51J.
Anyone have the same dilemma as me? -

BTW, do anyone of you happen to know if there will be customize options for SSD in xotic / any other reseller for the new Intel X25M-G2?
The price is cheaper than X25M (G1) and the G2 is better and can support trim in the future!
And does anyone know if the 7mm or the 9.5mm version of the Intel X25M-G2 will be able to fit into the G51J?Click to expand... -

Well tbh i never bother looking for size specs back when i bought it, i saw 2 versions out there of the X25m G2, the R5 n C1, i was told that it was just the way that intel ship them packed, that there was no difference in spec/speeds, so i never even bother with the dimensions since there were only 2 options for sale when i bought it.kainwalker said: ↑thanks for your reply. Since your brought up the dimensions, the G51 does have different depth in the bays, the original or the one that comes with the drive installed its a little deeper than the extra bay, i never bother to place the x25 in the second bay but my guess is it fits as well.
I know there is going to be an X18 that will be different in dimensions (1.8) but to what i understood there were no variations in the X25m, but i might be wrong.
You got me thinking, went to search some,
On Amazon (where i bought it) both have the same dimiensions (5.9 x 4.3 x 0.9 inches ; 4.5 ounces) R5 n C1
And on newegg both have 9.5 in the spec section, C1 n R5 -

I have been asking around for a while:
does anyone happen to know if the G51j backlid will look like G51Vx or G60j?
i.e. black background + blue stripes or blue background + silver slash? -

ASUS G51J-A1 720QM 2.0G 4GB 640GB 15.6IN W7HP CAM 2.0M
The rest is the usual parts, same GTX 260M, same wireless etc. It doesn't say if the 2 hdds are 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm, and I guess it doesn't come with blu-ray.
The only thing weird is the 2.0G, which I don't really see what it describes.. -
hmm seems like a great price to me... especially with the nice warranty asus gives u...
-
GenTech has it displayed as the blue/silver case. It seems to be the most likely possibility.kainwalker said: ↑I have been asking around for a while:

Is the G51J compatible with the power Pad 130 or 95. Power Pads or large flat batteries that greatly increase your battery power. You could probably attach it to the bottom of a laptop to. Find it at http://www.electrovaya.com/products/powerpad/models/PowerPad130Battery.aspx
Thanks -
also is the g51j the 15.6 inch screen or the 16 inch screen. On the Asus website it says the the g60 is the better gaming laptop. Is that true?
-
The G51j is the 15.6" screen while the G60j is the 16" screen version and I believe only exclusive to Europe.moneyman101 said: ↑also is the g51j the 15.6 inch screen or the 16 inch screen. On the Asus website it says the the g60 is the better gaming laptop. Is that true?Click to expand...

iirc, the G60j was also available in AU
-
I have no idea where they say the G60J is better, unless they meant in comparison to the M60J. The only differences between the G60J and the G51J are the screen size and resolution, from what we know at the moment. (G60J has a bigger screen, but the G51J has a higher resolution.)moneyman101 said: ↑also is the g51j the 15.6 inch screen or the 16 inch screen. Pretty solid machine, $1459 seems amazing deal, just hope it can hanlde the cooling on the i7, but in all fairness cpu never heated much for me as the video card. The only thing that i dont like is dual 320gb hd, i would prefer a single 500gb and a ssd (to be upgrade later).
-
with an SSD you wouldn't have such an amazing price tho.
