Hey Justin,
You think you can upgrade me to the wireless WLHDD25? []

mar2k... yeah you think something's up too? I don't know what they are planning.... but something sounds too good to be true... but they confirmed the price.. they confirmed the configuration..... they also confirmed that starting with the W3s... all of our customers are getting the extra year warranty as a bonus becasue we are not configuring any of the ensemble notebooks........
Then you have our bonus which we're having to bump up to the wl-hdd kit...... which is out of our pocket and the bump is only because Asus forgot to order in more of the 330g's (i guess they had something else on their minds).
Thanks,
Justin

If the price of the w5 were to go down, i'm all over that!!! If not, it maybe worth getting the w3, although I think the v6 looks better IMO. [

Is that a joke? I told you that you were getting that, right? I'm giving everyone that now because asus dropped the ball and didn't have any of the 330g's.... so i took it upon myself to give everyone the upgrade. Although we all know that even this will blow up in my face... either people are going to think it's not as good.. or it's just going to be TOO much of a good thing and they think its complicated.... My guess is people will now complain that it doesn't COME with a it's own hard drive.....
Thanks,
Justin

Found out why the speakers in the palm rest didn't fly on the W3's final production units........
The design worked on the v6, but not on the w3 because it was shorter...... so your palms basically fully covered the speakers when used on the w3...... where on the v6 you had 1.5" of more space for your hands to rest. Makes sense to me now that I look back and think about it... also really sets in when i pull my hands back on the v6 and it's a weird feeling and the sound gets muffled.... so....... I guess that solves that and it's found it was changed for the good of the product...
Thanks,
Justin

BS you didn't doubt me.... you have to have.. thats a natural human instinct... lol
Anyway... yes... we have probably 15 330g's... we have 15 or so 530g's... but asus didn't have many more 330g's.. and no more 530g's... so i sort of want to give everyone the same thing.... dumb on my part? Maybe... but i don't want people to think someone got something better than they did....... even if it was for something that was free....
Thanks,
Justin

To be honest, It's still going to be an awesome little machine...but I must say I'm very disappointed...both the other versions exist, whether they're only demo's or not...and 99% of people would say that those other versions are much easier on the eyes...I'm just disappointed because there's so much potential there, I mean they have the winning combination in existence, I guess that's what gets me more than anything, that it's out there, but we're not going to be able to get it...(with the North American specs anyways)
The horror, as that news sinks in, I feel like I'm slowly witnessing a tragedy...It's very, very sad.
[8D] -
CalibratedComa Notebook Evangelist
The speakers don't bother me at all...I like them where they are just fine...and that design explanation makes perfect sense...but I don't think we're actually going to need them clear all that much...It's the rest of the palm rest/touchpad surround that's going to give me nightmares tonight. So is this light grey version 100% confirmed, or do we still have a flicker of hope left?
Please say FLICKER...FLICKER, SAY IT!!!
[8D] -
Justin, now with the updated warranty policy, if i bought from you now (im in asia), would i recieve the 3 years global warranty directly from ASUS?
-
CalibratedComa Notebook Evangelist
orangeguy, It's a Global Warranty so they'd have too...but wait for Justin to respond anyhow...you'd think you'd be able to get a better deal where you are then ordering all the way from the US...but I guess that extra year means a lot to you If It's not offered in Asia so...
[8D] -
Personally, once I heard that it's overall $200 less than when we started, the trackpad and surround color didn't matter nearly as much. And the pics we've seen so far, though not as cool as the darker color we thought we were getting, still look pretty good to me. Course I'm typing on an all white ibook with gray surround at the moment....
-
CalibratedComa Notebook Evangelist
Like I already said, I'd gladly pay the extra $200 to get it the way I want it, with the darker uniform look to it...I was already going to pay the higher price for that look anyways...so hearing the price drop was awesome, but not at the expense of that look...If the price stayed the same and we ended up with this look, I think many more people would be peeved to say the least...It's a damn shame if you ask me, a damn shame.
I guess everyone can kinda tell how shocked and disappointed I am! Sorry for all the posts.
[8D]
-
i still think it looks damn good and the darker color would have been a bonus; not having it doesn't take away from the notebook at all. ya know, when it comes to mass production the stupidest little things happen that prevent certain features.
who knows, maybe some factory in the taiwan didn't have enough dye for the darker plastic and securing enough would have been a significant delay and since there was enough of the other color around, they just went with that.
-
You guys are crazy. Besides its not about dye, its about anodizing aluminum. Anodized is much more expensive and time consuming for one, but aside from that, the touchpad is still aluminum!! At least they didnt come out and say "sorry the touchpad is now PLASTIC". I would rather have an aluminum peice in an "off" color as opposed to a matching plastic peice. Thats just me though, and the bare aluminum color doesnt bother me one bit. If it bothers you, see if there is a way to take it off, and powder coat it black and put it back it... I mean, once the warranty is up
-
I think the W3v still looks pretty good, but definitely not as good as I thought it was going to look. It almost looks like they pieced together parts from the W3a and the W3n to make a third model. It seems to me you could still have a dark touchpad and surround with aluminum, as the lid is brushed aluminim and it's almost black. I think the W3a and W3n definitely look better and more uniform than the W3v, but for that price, who cares?! It still looks pretty sweet even if it is sort of giving me a weird 80s vibe for some reason.
And Cal, don't sweat the small stuff. [

Ok, so get this........ Asus told me to look at the pictures on our pre-order page and check out the palm rest in different light. They pointed out this one picture..
http://www.proportable.com/images/W3v/W3-Front-O.jpg
Now..... look at the touchpad surround... it's aluminum colored... but it's from the same photo shoot and same computer that all of the other pictures are from... So, i don't know..... but I'm starting to get curious as to if the darker color has only been an optical illusion (although on the demo unit... it was certainly all dark with the aluminum palm rest...)
Thanks,
Justin

Not sure if this is the correct place to mention this but if some of you are dissapointed with the way the W3V might look, there is an alternative sexy machine which my mate just bought. Its the Samsung X50 which has similiar specs to the W3V. It is a tad dearer than the W3V in that it costs about £1700 for a good spec plus it has a 15" widescreen. Heres a link to the site if anyone is interested.
http://www.samsung.co.uk/cgi-bin/ecuk/product/product_detail.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1906095304.1113677010@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccceaddegffemedcfekcefedffgdfmh.0&categoryPath=%2fSEUK+Products%2fIT+%26+Business+Related+Product%2fNotebook+PC%2fX50&prodID=NP-X50T004%2fSUK&detailTab=Specifications#detailTab
Personally I am going to give the W3V another week to arrive in the UK.If it does'nt come in by then I probably will buy the X50. I need a laptop urgently and all this waiting for the W3V is driving me around the bend. I will get a chance to see the X50 tomorrow and if it has a 'glare type screen' I really might consider it.
Those Asus laptops are very well priced in the US. $1900 is about £1000 which is a steal for the spec of the macine. We pay over the odds here in the UK.

Wouldn't it be MUCH easier if they just took a picture for us? X_X
When you say the "touchpad surround" do you mean the rim?
http://img9.echo.cx/img9/4148/edit1jz.jpg
You're talking about the "surround" that's marked in blue right? If that's some other shade, like bare aluminum, I don't mind that.
What I want is for the entire palmrest and keyboard to have uniform color. As in marked red in the picture above.
Anything unmarked in within the touchpad area doesn't concern me as much. As long the marked area are dark gray/black, then I'm content.

Ok... now I'm confused....
when I say "touchpad surround" .... I mean this..... you have the touchpad, ok? Then you have the left and right click buttons....... those buttons are in aluminum..... and then that aluminum stretches up and around the sides and the top of the touchpad itself..... just like the m5... and v6...
I hope that clears it up.
Asus doesn't have the time to take pictures of them.. i'll have mine soon enough.... I'll take one.
Thanks,
Justin

Yeah Justin, I suspect the darker touchpad surround is actually just an illusion created by light. In some pictures I've seen where it looks "darker" it is actually almost variable, like one half looks darker than the other, or there is a shine that leads me to believe it has to do with reflection and lighting. My guess is there is no such thing as an actual dark touchpad surround and they're all the same.
I am one escroww -
its chrome... exaclty the same as the media buttons on the sides.
chromed plastic, or a polished metal. thats why it always looks different
man, my spelling... -
yes, I am aware of the aluminum buttons. isn't the discussion about little piece around the buttons? That is clearly a reflective material of some sort.
-
PROPortable Company Representative
What are you talking about? ... and it's chrome.. but no, you're wrong.
The piece that of material that makes up the left and right click buttons is a piece is standard brushed aluminum... just like the M5.... it's in it's natural state.... it's not a chromed plastic or anything like that...
Thanks,
Justin

no...... the touchpad is the touchpad... the pad that you touch that moves the cursor around...... the left and right click buttons are not the touchpad. Although most people commonly refer to the whole area as the "touchpad", I'm singling this out becasue the pad itself isn't aluminum, but the buttons are..... and since the aluminum surrounds the pad itself..... i'm talking about that. I know what you're talking about......
You're talking about the trim piece that is between the aluminum and the palmrest... but thats not an issue... becasue on every one of the different variations of the chassis... that little area was always the same.
Thanks,
Justin

no, even in that last picture it's still aluminum...... every w3 has the aluminum left and right click buttons.... period... although i see what you're seeing in that last picture.. it's just not spewing the truth there......... ALL of those pictures (except for the last one with the guy holding a W3) ....... are all from the same photo shoot... it's the same system, trust me. I didn't take them... but those photos are between 30mb and 300mb on my system and when you can see them at a width of 30,000 pixels instead of 800 pixels.... you'd probably see them better.
Once I have them in hand and can take shots of mine I will... I think the first ones will show up on Tuesday.
Thanks,
Justin

Well If those are all the same system/version in ALL the pics, then there's 100% NO WAY that the light could possibly change the appearance between those pics and the Sticky pics that much...It's just not possible. If that's the case, then there's definitely two totally different shades of aluminum on each system and the light has nothing to do with it. If there were two versions there, then one of them might have been the same with the Sticky pics because of the lights etc, but not if they're all the same exact laptop in every picture.
I can't wait to see what's what on Tuesday, Justin, take some REALLY GOOD pics for us!!! [8D] -

Yeah, the buttons are integrated into the Touchpad surround...It's one and the same piece...and I don't buy that it's the lighting...It's most certainly NOT the lighting as far as I'm concerned...that last pic that Justin posted...that WOULD be the darker aluminum I REALLY want to see on the W3V...and I see how that ONE PICTURE can be debatable as far as light is concerned...but I still feel looking back at the W3V pics found in the Sticky, that there's two different shades of aluminum here...
I must also say though, I've been looking closely on your site Justin, and there's definitely two different versions pictured there...one is dark aluminum and the other one does appear to be some form of high grade plastic...look...
Aluminum pic: http://www.proportable.com/images/W3v/W3-Front-O.jpg
Plastic Pics: http://www.proportable.com/images/W3v/W3-touch-pad.jpg
AND http://www.proportable.com/images/W3v/W3-Right-open1.jpg
(The last link/pic has a light source proving It's not aluminum)
Now that I'm looking closely, even the battery hinge looks darker in Justin's pics than it does in the W3V sticky pics. Either there's a bunch of versions out there...or ASUS touched up those pics to make it look much more uniform/attractive in colour than it really is? Who knows now?
I guess the only way we'll really be able to settle this and have some closure is when Justin takes some high quality multi-angle pics of whatever shows up as the North American W3V. I personally like both versions shown in the above links...I'd much rather have the darker aluminum version if possible, but I'd be more than content settling for the "plastic looking" dark version over the light grey aluminum version featured in the W3V sticky...which it looks like it might very well be!
This whole thing BITES, when do you think we'll be able to see some "OFFICIAL" W3V PROPortable pictures Justin?
[8D]
PS Sencha, I'm trying not the sweat the small stuff...but I think It's much easier for you to say that clinging to your brand new S5...then It would be with empty hands and the very fate of your laptop purchase up in the air. [8D]
-
CalibratedComa Notebook Evangelist
DEAL!!! Don't forget to include a few really nice comparo shots of the W3V next to the W5 please...I really want to compare the LCD's side by side and the keyboards, as well as the thickness of both systems. [8D]
-
YES, it could be lighting. There is no touching up on thoses photos and there is no plastic. Cal, I don't know if you've ever been involved in any sort of semi-serious photography, but if you have, you would easily be able to tell that that is the same touchpad surround - they are all aluminum - and one looks darker because of reflections and lighting and one looks lighter for the same reason. Take a piece of aluminum foil and turn it different direcctions, it WILL change color. It's not just lighting, it's reflection.
I understand that you're upset and concerned and that when you're spending that kind of money you want the thing to be perfect, but I honestly think you're overreacting a bit. I think you've convinced yourself that the perfect W3 is out there, when I honestly don't believe it is. I know you're disappointed, but to have the whole purchase hanging in the balance because of this...
Also, the W5 has a lighter touchpad surround too. Why doesn't that bother you? Maybe I'm just totally confused about what it is that is actually bothering you.

From what I hear, they are getting unloaded from the FedEx truck right now. I'll pull mine out of the box and take a few quick shots in a couple hours.
From the looks of it, all pre-orders that are going out FedEx should leave tomorrow. All USPS Canadian orders may leave the following day (someone has to run them to the post office and we're quite busy)...... All orders placed after last friday will probably ship Wednesday and Thursday.

One detail that was just confirmed by Asus. The Free 3rd year North American Warranty does not start until May 1, 2005, with the beginning of the new dealer program.
