4-5 hours of normal use is fine by me, that was one of the big deal breakers with the N61. Now, I just need to see what the price is and if we can get options like a BR player or BR burner.

Asus employees are perhaps not coming to this forum like Dell, so that even your voice/request could be heard by Asus. Better if you want higher resolution laptop (like me) look for other brands/models.

Resolutions, resolutions, resolutions. I guess with a non-customizable manufacturer of a laptop, you'll be hard pressed to find a suitable resolution.

You want full HD expect to pay premium prices.
Personaly I think it would be a waste on a 13"/14" laptop.

Sorry, If I'm wrong. You said "Non-customizable manufacturer".
If XoticPC, PNB, GentechPC, etc ... can customize the Asus laptop for processor, hdd, ram, optical drive, wifi, tv tunner, card reader, sound card, etc ..... without voiding the warranty, then why not the screen ? I think if we can customize all most all (except screen), then we can consider it a customizable laptop (directly or indirectly).

Well I just don't think there are that many 14'' LCD screens with higher than 1300x700. Check out Xotic or Powernotebooks current selection of 14'' laptops. You can't customize the resolution.

You looking for full HD get a G73 or a CLEVO.
Battery life is not good but then again you have to make some sacrifices.

I echo the sentiments of the posters above me with their concern for higher resolution panels. Both this N82 and the 4820TG are perfect laptops for me, except for their resolution (I want 1600 x 900).

14.0" 1600 x 900 panels exist. Dell uses them, Sony uses them, Lenovo uses them. You could find these online for ~$100. I am planning on swapping the the screen out as soon as I get one of these.

The main concern with changing out these LED panels seems to be the placement of the LVDS connector (and thus having to modify/replace the cable); everything else seems pretty standard, and I can't imagine the video card not supporting the new resolution.

Well, we still can't be sure about when to expect it, but the way things are adding up I might get the Acer and make do with technically not being covered by warranty when I return to Australia.
It does seem like the Acer will be the better computer, from what I've seen.

It really depends what you are going to use it for.
It's nice and has full HD like you want, but overall not bad.
But truthfully I'm not a big DELL fan.

STAY AWAY from the Studio series with ATI graphics cards. The cooling system was just barely adequate with core2duos, and so you'll get massive throttling on your core i5/i7 (turbo-boost? more like turbo-crawl).

I had a studio 1557 (the i7 version of the 1558) and the graphic card would regularly hit 105 C, and the processor was frequently pegged at full load ... at 900 mhz.

Of course, this only happened when I did anything with the GPU - browsing firefox and using office was fine.

Do a quick search for studio 1557 throttling. I don't know if a comparable thread exists for the i5 model, but since there is only a 10w power difference (~10% of full load), I doubt there is a big improvement.

For countries with those stores or for people who can import from the stores, I'll take that non-customizable aspect back. However, seeing what I'd see from retail stores, and from those online shops as well, they have a pre-configured base model which the likes of Xotic & Gentech add hardware to. But here in the part of Asia where I live (and probably most as well), laptops from ASUS are sold pre-configured as they are from retail stores to their own direct stores. Non-upgradeable, if you don't have a know-how for hardware.

Since the screen upgrades would have to be at those stores and not from ASUS, I'd imagine they'd have a limited supply base from which to source parts, and they're taking the most accessible and least expensive ones. Not unlike HP/Dell which have a vast access to such. If you can upgrade it yourself, why not?

Keep grinding the rumor mill and it may come faster. Maybe. :p

Only new ASUS laptops that have landed here (In the Philippines, at least) are the K40's and the K50's. A tech blog said before the N82Jv will arrive in March, but seeing from the online retailers here, they still don't have it in stock. I'll try looking into the big malls and tech stores if they already have it or any info about it.

I went ahead and just got a UL30vt-a1 for ~$750... Got tired of waiting, school starts next week and I need something... The machines everyone's waiting on anyway are probably going to be ~$1,000-1,200, and I can definitely use the saved cash for other things.

Agreed. If You want a specific system, You have to find a retailer to import it, or import it yourself, it's annoying, but that's seems to be the only option.

What do you think about appearance of this laptop ? I don't very like it. Brun / bronze color...it's arkful! agree ? The Sony Z Carbon has very better looking !

Other that, I think it's the best for me, the Sony Z is not cold like this one and Optimus is great !

The Sony Vaio Z is in another league in terms of quality, but also in terms of the price.

So if you plan on having such a budget spent on a notebook, i would definitely get the Z.

I just looked at this again. I am thoroughly confused now.

14.4V at 4400mAh is 63 Whr which actually IS an 8 cell battery's standards. What the hell? Also, 14.4V is four Li-ion cells in series, which also points to an 8 cell battery. My current G1S has an 8 cell with 14.4V and 4800 mAh which is only slightly better than this one. What is going on?

Anyway, mAh is a multiplicative factor but not the whole thing. Remember, volts * current = power, and in the end it's the amount of stored energy that's important.

Let's hope there will be a decent deal a month after the release date *fingers crossed*

If anyone's looking for an equivalent for the N82, I think MSI has it in their FX 400 series: Same 14", Core i5+335M & Optimus. Though I think the N82 would get released first since the latter was announced at CeBit. I could be wrong.

Anyway, I thought I'd list down the whole relatively affordable 14" multimedia laptops (Comes with Core i-series):
    ASUS N82
    Nvidia 335M (Optimus)
    MSI FX 400
    Nvidia 335M (Optimus)
    Sony Vaio CW
    Nvidia 330M
    Acer TimelineX 4820T
    ATI 5650HD
    Lenovo Ideapad Y460
    ATI 5650 HD

That's about it, essentially a graphics duet between the 5650 and the 335M. What to pick?... ;)

Apparently the Y460 doubles as an egg fryer, according to people in the Lenovo forum. The Timeline, nobody really knows. I got even less faith in MSI releasing their notebook (see that GX640? delayed 4 months+) so I guess I'm still waiting for this N82JV.

How bad are the Asus displays & what issues do people have with them? My wife has a older HP and the display is pretty decent. I've seen a few Asus models at BB and they seemed pretty comparable.

Apparently, I saw the 4820T listed as free in a bundle offered by an internet company in Singapore. Comes only with the Intel HD graphics though.

    Eww, a 4570 rebadge.

It doesn't say "switchable graphics" in the specs either. I'd place it as discrete only.

do you know if this laptop will be available in other color ? (like black) because the brown version is like a grandfather laptop with his very retro look. I prefer the new timeline X for the look.
