well, here in China, it's widely available. However, the only sku selling now is not so appealing (core i5 and 6 cells battery). A new sku is supposed to come very soon (i7 and 8 cells batterry) and I will get it :D

a Chinese review with plenty of pictures and some benchmarks (including USB3.0 + comparison intel HD IGP vs GT335M) on a i7 620M unit:
    ht tp:// asusbbs.zol.com.cn/38/227_379204.html
(copy/paste the url in new tab, remove the 2 spaces and use google to translate. if you don't understand something, ask me ;) )

I have seen the laptop at a shop and it looks wonderful. The brown pattern on lid and deck is anodized aluminum. The palm rest is rubberized (no shiny, no finger prints). Standard HD is 7200RPM

I was looking first for UL30JT or U30JT but I think I will get finally the N82 because of USB3.0 and GT335M. For same size of U30JT you have a much more powerful gaming machine (and shorter battery live of course but with Optimus it's still more than 6 hours when surfing/office with the 8 cells). And You can play nearly all games at medium/high details in the native LCD resolution

Do you think it's available at Hong Kong as well? I'll be going there next month, but haven't got a clue whether they sell the N82 there. :(

    I read that.
Question: 49C on the GT335M under load seems a bit unreal to me. I wonder if they messed something up?

I'm Chinese too, by the way, so no ambiguities in my comprehension of the review.. :)

Anyway.. I finally gave up waiting for this thing and went ahead with a GX640. Granted, though, this just sort of destroyed my primary justification for buying a notebook (wanting something smaller and lighter than my old G1S to bring to class), although.. I suppose the GX640 IS a bit lighter.. but what the heck ;)

I would assume so, since virtually everything is. It certainly would not be SATA III, if that's the question and since only the fastest magnetic hard drives can saturate the bandwidth of SATA I, it doesn't really matter unless you plan to install an SSD.

Not sure if anybody has posted this yet, but notebookcheck has bench marked a bunch of games with the Asus N82.

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-335M.24060.0.html

Just click on the numbers next to the games, and some of them are the N82. For example, Battlefield Bad Company 2 gets around 35 fps on medium settings and it can handle Modern Warfare on high settings. Hopefully this means a full review is coming soon...

yep i believe i have seen someone posted about it, actually it;s been there for a while

    what's surprising is that

you can see that M11X, despite using SU7300, are capable of matching almost the same fps as N82JV with the i7

with M11X only losing on 1-2 frames / sec

and also look at the NFS:Shift, M11X wins the round for that, i wonder why??

The N82Jv has quite a solid advantage in DiRT 2, though; 49.2 fps vs 34.8 @ med, and 43.8 vs 34.8 in Crysis @ med on the GPU benchmark, and 42.9 fps vs 30 fps in the CPU benchmark.
It shows that the m11x's CPU is still capable of being a letdown, enough that I'd have a definite preference for the ASUS N82Jv or the Acer TimelineX. After all, the weight of the N82Jv is ~5 lbs vs the m11x's 4.5 lbs, which isn't too much of a difference, and the 13" TimelineX will be even lighter, yet with an HD 5650.

yeah, but TimelineX is Acer....

while the M11X is not really far away in the leage of this N82JV in terms of fps, but with this laptop from Asus, i can see Alienware take the action on their M11X

basically, N82JV is the Alienware's version of M11X from Asus, which M11X itself should have had( USB3.0, Optimus, i5/i7 )

    Same here.

I was just about to order an Alienware Mx11 today when I came across the Asus N82's. Now that I've seen what they have to offer, and Asus being relatively ' cheap' on other products in comparison to their competitors (that I've found) I'm holding off until this is released.

It seems that every time I get set on the laptop to buy, I find a new one that's even more intriguing lol!

I was looking at the USB 3 specification, and it looks like it's data rate is
actually higher than ExpressCard. So, in theory, wouldn't it possible to build
a "USB 3 to ExpressCard Adapter"? I.e., you take this device, plug it into
the "USB 3" port on the N82JV, and it provides an ExpressCard 54 socket?

Perhaps the important apps for ExpressCard will come out in "USB 3" so
it won't be necessary any way. (Like docking station with full fps graphics.)

welcome to the world of technology :D

well, im pretty much in the same condition, was about to hit the nail on M11X, then came across this

but this is it, im tired of the waiting game, been looking for a new laptop since January, when the M11X came out 2 months ago, i was 500% certain of buying it, even already pre ordered it, then around last 2 weeks, when i was supposed to confirm it, then this hits me up and this needs to stop

more waiting and ill end up with no laptop at all, i know there will be another N83, N84 in the future, but i think it's either this or M11X

im giving this wait until May 1st, if no news, M11X here i come

Same here. I figure I can wait it out a little longer.

I'm in no rush besides the fact I'm an impatient person :), so I can wait until the rumored early May release to decide what I want to get.

Any reply from xoticpc? I would ask myself but for some reason their website never loads from my IP address.

EDIT: I spoke to someone from xoticpc (from another IP address...) who told me that it appears headed for a Q3 release... And then I spoke to someone at GenTech who maintained the first week of May line. So... who knows?

lol i know how you feel, good thing the spec helps out

dont compare this to HP or Alienware or Sony, it's obvious, with those specs and the price given, you will always find a downside, but it's not that bad,
( unless if you line M11X beside it, it's out of the league )

i mean for people that doesn't care about "looks" and "coolness" and want perfomance this laptop is just perfect

but if you care about looks, well yeah, unfortunately, the N82JV does not really offer that market yet.. i supposed, hope the next revision will be at least better in design

closest thing that give both looks and perfomance and in the same price is the M11X

But why ? OK the color might not be ideal but IMO you get used to it.
On the other hand, it looks like a fine piece of machinery. The keyboard, trackpad, screen and (especially) cooling are better than the competition (Acer 4820TG, Lenovo Y460) while the price is relatively on the same levels. Add the two years international warranty and the brown starts to fade away ;)

The N82's color resembles that of the old HP Bronze Imprint designs which I really liked. More importantly, it's what is running under the hood that matters.

Agreed. The Acer's keyboard have the floating island keyboard design which makes for dust and dirt more easier to get into. The Lenovo just fails in keeping thermals under control. :( The international warranty is essential for me as I'll be looking to purchase this outside my country. Great thing ASUS has one. :)

From the reviews, the only pains that I (hopefully) can tolerate is the relatively loud fan noise and Optimus not recognizing what program needs the 335M.

I think the 13" Acer's cooling might be better than the N82JV. Two people in the Acer thread have posted temps maxing out at 65/66 degrees Celsius or so under load. On the other hand, I believe the 14" Acer's cooling isn't quite as good, since it doesn't seem to have the dual heatsink/fan setup.

Why do they always have to put in such poor LED panels though? 1.47 black levels and 144:1 contrast is rubbish! Acer is just as bad.
I would happily pay an extra $50 for a decent screen upgrade.

To me this is the biggest let down of all recent laptops (n82/3820tg/vaio CW or E etc etc). To me the screen is one of the most important aspects. I cannot find a performance 13" with a decent screen except the vaio Z (I will never buy another vaio until they sort the battery drain and let you use standard gfx drivers)

really disappointing this trend to use awful display... acer 3820 has a horrible display, probably worse that the one that i have on a 7 year old notebook (that is glossy but not very reflective), asus has a slight better display, but nothing good howether... how is this possible!!!!!!

the perfect laptop will be the sony z without SSD and without DVD, so it can be about 300-350$ less, but with a perfect display, better ventilation (without DVD) and very good performance (with incredible good chassis/keyboard)

why sony???? please make this perfect laptop, asus and acer use only bargain display... :(

They do. You just can't CTO it in the US yet. In Japan, you can buy the Z with a disk/HD and full 1080 display. Probably see it available in the US when the Z does a minor refresh within the next few months.

Funny, I thought the SSD was its best selling feature next to the 3lb weight.

depends on how much I can resist to get a new laptop... because N43JF looks my dream machine by now... but I feel it will not be ready before months :(

or another option is geting N82Jv now and N43JF after :p

SSD capacity is too small. I'd rather have the 500gb storage space rather
than boot speed (and potential write issues if it's an MLC).

the problem with SSD is the start price of the notebook (i prefer to update it with ssd in second moment) and the fact that raid 0 doesn't support Trim and you can't choose the brand you prefer of ssd...

so fot that much better mecchanical hdd + swap ssd by your own when you want

here in italy there is also Z with 500gb hdd and no ssd, but it cost the same as the model with 128GB (2x64) SSD because you can find the first only in the vaio store (so you can configure it as you want, also with 1080p display) instead the second is a preconfigure model that you can find in any store, so it have a much less price

I noticed from one of the photos the weird texture on the touchpad. Anyone
use one like that? Is it pleasant to use? Does it feel like sandpaper? :)

Also, I noticed no "core i7" like the "Core i7-620M". I guess that's
an upgrade that will have to wait until the warranty expires.

P.S. Your link worked for me once, then won't work any more.
Looking at the contents it looks very complicated. Doesn't seem
to be really available on their site through manual navigation.

Correct. You can find the page taping N82JV in the search field but it's not in the regular menu.
Moreover, picture is from N61 in the overview tab and tech specs are wrong (for example, they are no IEEE1394 port)
But the model is widely available in China and I have seen it 2 times already (going again today :D ) so the availability in the rest of the world should be very soon...

    Under Home > Notebooks > Multimedia Entertainment > N82 Series > N82Jv.

I've been watching this notebook for months and I'm hoping I'll be able to get my paws on it before I fly overseas in June.......

Yes a lot of us here have been waiting patiently since CES in january for this, but if Asus don't get their S**T together and release this soon, I'm pulling the trigger on the Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820TG-434G64Mn. It's available for purchase now for 933€.

Here is my personal list of pros and cons so far:

Acer 4820TG-434G64Mn (64Mn is the ATI 5650 GPU)
    + Nice brushed alu look
    + Directx 11 GPU
+ Acer is part of the ATI Mobility "opt-out" driver program (montly updates = good support)
    - no USB 3.0
    - Wobbly floating keys (lint problems)
    - 5-10 degrees hotter under load than the Asus (not sure how much more uncomfortable this will be. My current lappy, an Acer with ATI 3450 gets friggin scorching under load)

    Asus N82Jv
+ USB 3.0 (important to me as I'll be installing a 80 GB Intel SSD in the lappy and moving the HDD to a USB 3.0 external enclosure, to be used when I need my media and as backup)
    + Island style keyboard
+ 2 Year global warranty, no dead pixel warranty.
    - Possibly seperate "Optimus" driver releases (fewer updates = poor support)

Both models have between 180-210 minutes of battery time in energy saving mode under medium load, which is good enough for me.

Overall I still think I like the Asus more... sigh...

Here's Notebookcheck's N82JV review in non-Google-translated English, which, since it's Notebookcheck, is still a bit awkward.

After a few months following this thread, I've decided to register and comment. I hope you can help.
I've noticed several comments discussing the bad quality of the display. Is there a video showing this?
As this laptop won't be sold in Spain, I was thinking of buying key stickers for the keyboard. Does anyone know where to get a good buy of this?
In the review that Thanatos82 posted above (thanks btw), they make a big fuzz about the glossy display. Are there any anti-gloss skins for 14" laptops?
Finally, do you guys know any online Asus distributors in Europe?

Well I'm hoping for this weekend, but I've learned to never get my hopes up :D .

I'll definitely be first in line to order one. Between Asus' global warranty (will be studying in Germany for 3 months) and the perfect match of battery-life/performance (for me anyways), I think this one is perfect for me. I am even rather fond of the brown.

I have concerns with the screen, but I figure that when I'm gaming at home, I'll just plug in my good monitor. While abroad, it will mainly be just a school computer anyways.

I'm hoping its released soon enough to get it in my hands by the end of June, otherwise I'm going to have to settle on something else! (Seems to be a common trend in this thread! :) )
