Exactly...The new HP Pavilions, Envys are really tempting in terms of specs and price and looks. I wish I'll get a Full HD version from the new systems.

Damn now this is getting frustrating. If that screen is better than the N82 then one might want to jump on this?

How good is that video card coming in the HP? Is the build quality of HPs laptops getting better? The last HP I had was hooooorible.

Damn damn damn. Now its like, even if the n82 comes out in two weeks...do you get it? My new deadline of July27(starcraft2 launch) is pretty far out there now.

the envy 14 is supposed to get the ati 5650 (keyword=supposed). my envy 15 is phenomenal, appearance and performance are leagues beyond what i was expecting. i was thinking of returning mine to get the envy 14 with a slot-loading optical drive, backlit keyboard, and edge-to-edge glass, but i can't give up my ati 5830.

from the videos i've seen, hp appears to have done a good job of listening to the customers and making the appropriate changes.

i think it's anybody's guess, right now. but you could always switch it out, later.

I supposed a 1 month delay from announcement to shipping isn't bad. Unlike some other companies I won't name. :D

Who knows, by then the N82 might actually be out too. haha

Why you should consider Envy14 ...

    1. 14.5" diagonal HD Radiance display with 1600x900 resolution
    2. i5 processor
    3. 1 GB ATI Mobility Radeon 5650
    4. switchable graphics
    5. eSata port
    6. magnesium/aluminum alloy shell
    7. backlit keyboard
    8. slot-loading optical drive
    9. HP TrueVision HD webcam
    10. $999 USD

Got to say this might have the n82 beat. If HPs build quality and warranty is good enough I believe it does.

The one thing its lacking is USB 3.0 but I can live without that. As long as it has gig ethernet (which oddly is missing from a lot of HP laptops) & bluetooth its fine for me.

I'm not a big fan of the cheap mainstream HP laptops, but their higher ends one seem good. I'd expect the Envy 14/17 to be pretty decent in terms of quality & construction.

Wow! That sounds impressive. I've been waiting for the Acer 3820 or Asus N82, but if neither is out by the time HP brings this to market they may lose my $$. I would be worried though about the HP build quality. I've heard nothing but bad things about HP, is there anything to indicate that has changed?

Asus and Acer have simply taken too long to get the goods to market. The Envy 14 is impressive. Display and backlit keyboard are really nice features. The keyboard looks much better than the Acer 4820TG. The design is beautiful, even if it is a complete knock-off of the MBP. This thing is going to sell well, if it doesn't fry eggs.

I bought an Acer 1410T to wait for the 3820TG and then to use as a travel unit. I've been working on it for 2 months now. :( My fingers long for a keyboard like the Envy 14. :D

How are you saturating 100mbps ethernet on a laptop? Do you have
a connection to the internet backbone?

Don't slot loading drives scratch up the CDs/DVDs?

The only CON for the Envy 14 compared to the N82 is weight (5.25 lb vs 5 lb), no USB 3.0, and warranty.

I am a little concern with the heat management of the Envy 14 because the Envy 15 has some heat problem with the i7 quad core.

So hopefully the Envy 14 can manage the heat better with i5.

I'm looking to replace my PC with a laptop. One of the things I do is backup the most important stuff from the home server to a folder on my hard drive. And of course, copying pictures & video back and forth takes far longer with a 100meg connection. When I upgraded to a gig switch, I saw my big copies take about 1/3 the time as they did with 100meg.

Plus, I keep pretty much everything on the server so I generate a lot of traffic back and forth.

So yeah, gig networking is a deal breaker for me. :)

that's the first i've heard of it

while it may be true for the i7 quads, the i5 envy 15s do not have heat problems. that being said, it appears from the pictures that the envy 14 has a redesigned cooling system (evidenced by the different placement of venting)

I think with the second generation Envy 15 the heat problem is solved. Again HP has made many changes to 14/17 as per users wishlist including the optical drive. As per Engadget the build quality of these new models are better than the ancestor. Lets see a tough competition in coming days :D

I think quality is depends on many factors, you can't just label a brand as "craptacular". HP makes notebooks for a varying degree of budgets, and depending on price you can expect higher quality.

But the Envy 15 doesn't have internal optical drive right? That seems to help ventilation a bit (the Acer timeline 4820T seems to have heat problem, but the 3820T doesn't, which has no optical drive and separate CPU/GPU heat sink).

Having said that, I still think I will get the Envy 14 (for now). The people in the HP forum also said the GPU might be able to upgrade to ATI 5830, which is another big plus to the Envy 14.

Come on Asus, at least give us a date and price so I can make up my mind already :)

I wouldn't expect to upgrade the Envy 14 given that it is engineered to be as slim and sleek as possible and because of that its gonna be a major pain the you know what to disassemble and also it probably uses a custom GPU so it fits the form factor.

Check out the Envy 14 video on youtube. YouTube - HP Envy 14
The guy opened up the bottom panel which reveals the hdd and battery, and he also mentioned that with a few screws removed, you can access the motherboard. That is good enough for me since I plan to upgrade the hdd to ssd and possible the memory in the future.

Both the Acer and Asus are losing sales by the day, and now with the announcement of hp envy 14 looks to have put another dent in the above notebooks. Acer and Asus needs too release their models ASAP as they losing momentum fast.

I like the fact that the N82JV has real touchpad (mouse) buttons, rather
than the goofy virtual buttons that I appear to see on the Envy 14.

I don't know if this is going to be any indication, but I'm in China and my local electronics store tell me they have this laptop in stock. They didn't have any floor models available for me to check out. This could mean a sign that it is going to come out soon for you guys, or maybe its just because Taiwan andChina are close together.

Yeah, but the thing I don't like is the N82 has that one big button vs. individual buttons. I'd take the virtual buttons over that.

Plus the Envy pad looks to be smooth (as it should) vs. having a annoying texture like the Asus.

And then there is also the annnoyance with the stupid cover over the ports on the right side of the machine. Great way to bring back 90's era laptop ideas to current machines.

Granted the N82 still has optimus + USB 3.0 going for it. But if the battery life and cooling of the Envy is decent enough, I could care less if the graphics were switchable or not. Going from 5 hours to 4.5 wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

Any opinions on the N82 vs. K42? It's for a multitasking work computer, and the GPU does not need to be very powerful, so I'm not sure the 335 will get much use there.

I've read that the outside of the K42 feels "cheap", but I have no experience of my own there. I've yet to see a N or K series in person, and would love some help! Both seem to be priced just right.

Not sure whether phasering someone will be as satisfying without that click
and the feeling of compression in your finger. :)

Actually, the Envy 14 does have switchable graphics, it just doesn't have
optimus because it's not using an nvidia card. My understanding is that
optimus is just a more automatic version of switchable graphics.
