For me the only big advantage in optimus is for battery life. If a laptop gets 5 hours on a charge, I'm really not concerned if optimus would eek out another 20-30 minutes, its not that big a deal.

while the optimus technology is nice, I'm interested in this because of the 335M. I really don't want to get stuck with an ATI graphics solution because of crappy driver support. the hardware is great if you only run windows though. NVIDIA if you plan on running linux or osx. Now if they'd only offer it with a higher resolution.

I invested $1,000 in USD into a precious metals fund while I await the "highly touted" N82JV.. Do you think I'll still have enough resources to actually purchase it when it is released in the 2nd quarter of 2011?

By the time Asus gets the N82JV to the US, your fund will have increased to the point that you will not only be able to buy the N82 but a 1xx series BMW convertible as well. :p The problem is that, by the time you buy the N82, most 11.6" subnotebooks will run rings around it for about half the price.

Your company needs to look past the Asus warranty and let you guys pick some different brands. The Envy 14 would be perfect for your needs.

BTW, how did that paternity test come out? I can clearly see the resemblence in your avatar pic.

That was a positive for Bronsky DNA. However, I may not have aged as gracefully as thou... Nor do I seem to have the same predilection for super charged graphics capabilities.

Maybe we can catch up on matters soon!

I will let you know how the Gold works out....

    Greetings All.
Long time lurker first time poster.
I have been long debating which lap-top to get, and having recently concluded this model was a lost cause I finally decided to choose between a UL30vt and U30JC. I arrived in Shanghai, and noticed the computer shop was still open. So i head to the computer shop 5 minutes before it closes just to find out my starting point for the aforementioned models.
Turns out they have the N82 on display and in stock. Shocked, surprised, stunned, I only had time to have a quick check of the specs and check the price before I fainted.
The price was RMB7500 which comes to US$1100 approx. I will be heading back tomorrow morning to have a better look at it and get the exact specs, and if I can get them down to RMB600-6500 I think I will buy it.
Hope this brings some people hope.
    Regards,
    Silk.

Are prices negotiated often in China? Not being from the culture, it surprised me when you said you could get the price lowered by 1000 yuan.

You could argue the price of 1 cent candy in china.
In china... EVERY one is trying to rip you off, so you have to negotiate.

My guide for the lowest price is the shops on Taobao, which is a litte like ebay.

    It's a freaking painful Choice.

I'm am building a desktop, so I don't need the gaming power like I did before my circumstances change, and allowed me to get a desktop.

I will be using it for travelling, so I am still leaning towards the u30jc if I can get it cheap enough. At US$750 it will be at least $250 cheaper then the N82.

Now I'm aware it's no where near a good, but it's a more convenient size, and lighter, and the battery lasts heaps longer. I travel around China butt load, and most trips are 3hours +.....

Arggg, kinda wish I didn't see this laptop.

The other thing bugging me, is by the looks of it, the ones here all come with 2 gigs of ram, meaning I will have buy more ram.

To anyone who has it already:

The launch for N82JV is said to be the 23rd calendar week here.

Is the N82JV worth to get or will the 900 Euro better be invested elsewhere?

    Review article (in German)
    http://www.notebookjournal.de/tests/laptop-review-asus-n82jv-nkrt-1126/1

The article states the fan was rather noisy and the display of modest viewing angles.

I suppose you won't get all perfect for the set price.

A thought that came me, too. Although, I may wait a few days before changing the order because besides cpu and graphic card, N61jq comes with a few disadvantages if you want to be mobile. An i7 quad is intriguing however.

I am surprise that your N61jq does not have bluetooth because according to the feature description in the review thread it is supposed to have.

There are always risks purchasing non-OEM batteries and even on OEM batteries too. As a rule of thumb, I always stick with batteries made/supplied by the manufacturer. Even when a 3rd party manufacture lists the same specs as an OEM battery, their build quality can not be guaranteed. For OEM batteries, there's no guarantee that it is 100% safe either (you've probably heard of exploding/melting batteries), however, I'd personally rather invest on a product that has the manufacture backing up its product(s) rather than a no-name local company. If your aftermarket battery caused your laptop to malfunction, chances are your laptop won't be covered by your warranty.

Thank you David, I suspected that might be the case. I've heard it said, "cheap is expensive" and I tend to agree.

I guess the upside of waiting so long for Asus to release the N82 is that it's given other companies a chance to release similar, competitive models like the HP Envy 14 which is supposed to be coming in late June. The 28th if memory serves.

So overall, there's a better chance for a lot of the folks in this thread to get a laptop more suited to their individual needs. Not an ideal scenario, sitting on our hands for months, but it's nice to have choices.

    My requirements are:

    Core i5/i7 CPU
    internal optical drive
Good graphics card (able to play NEW games at medium settings)
My only requirements are <= 14 longest dimension, not crazy thick
    not crazy expensive (> $1500)

Initially, the n82jv was the only player, then the envy 14. (I think
I found one other laptop, but it was crazy thick, like 2" thick closed.)
Also the Sony Vaio Z fits the bill, but it's like $2500. That's crazy!

    Hi again.
In the end I chose the Ul30Vt over the N82, but I did have a quick look at it.

The price ended up being about US$1050 equivilant, so I would suggest it will end up being under 1k in the US.

It looks good, the tracking pad is smooth, specially compared to the ul30vt.

I can understand the complaints about the screen, and imo, it's lets down the whole thing. It isn't terrible, but it was worse even then the ul30vt.

The finish, build quality and specs are all great, just a sham about the screen.

In the end I chose battery life and portability since I will be using the lap top for travel, but if it wasn't for these needs I would have bought the n82.

Don't know if this was useful at all, but maybe it was :)

Screen, being the most visual interactive component of a laptop/PC MUST be of high quality. But these manufacturer are give stress on GPU and forgets about adding an option of Full HD, 1080p screen. When my TV is of full HD, 1080p, I do not think I'll even consider less than that in a laptop/PC monitor :D

If you are building a Porsche, you don't give it the interior of a Geo Metro. I thought that this was simple to understand.

Why would they make this machine with such potent graphic capabilities in a portable package and then choose such a lackluster screen? Sigh.

Some people use laptops primary for ease of transport between work and home.
I.e., they dock it at home and at work with a full size screen & keyboard.
In that case, the graphics card matters, but not the screen.

What exactly sucks about the screen besides the resolution?
The viewing angle, the contrast, the glossiness?

It's been fun waiting for godot with you lot the last few months. hope the thing doesn't end up a disappointment if and when it comes out.

Is USB 3.0 confirmed for this?

I have already ordered a HP DV6T SE about a week ago, and it is supposed to be manufactured by June 1st. Got the 25% bing cashback. But it does not come with USB 3.0

I usually keep my laptops for 3 years, should I keep the HP or wait for the Asus or Acer Timeline to come out, or HP Envy 14? Are all these models confirmed to have USB 3.0?

Do you guys think within 2-3 years USB 3.0 will be the standard? Or maybe take a bit longer?

Of course your survey only involved talking to the other 6 castaways,
so it may be too small to extrapolate conclusions from it. :D

That model's too wide, 16 inch screen, not in the 14 ballpark like n82jv or Envy 14.

N82 series is confirmed to have USB 3.0.
Not all devices will take full advantage of USB 3.0, the most useful will be the external storage devices because of the fast data transfer rate, also it can charge portable devices battery faster such as your cell phone.

Some manufacturers are turning to the USB 3 already. MSI is about to introduce an external graphics solution for small notebooks and has already said that it will be getting the USB 3.0 soon to replace its expresscard interface.

There is no external HDD that can push the performance limits of the USB 3.0 interface ATM. Theoretically, the performance between express card 2.0 (x1 PCIe) should be about the same as USB 3.0. Interesting though, that anyone would choose to develop an external graphics solution to work over USB 3.0 instead of mPCIe since it would be limited to ~1x performance just like the express card versions. The new external GPU solutions appear to still be only for Intel GPU laptops.

Me too, the bright screen of the envy 14 is really tempting, Even though I already bought a 23" dell monitor and keyboard in preparation for the coming of the n82 (not a biblical reference). Optimus is cool, but if the battery life on the envy turns out to be longer than the n82 like it's alleged to be, who cares about the optimus! And as for the warranty and the reliability issue, I'll just get an extended warranty. Cmon Asus, wow us already!

I've given up on the N82 and once the Envy 14 is released I'll either buy 2 of those or 2 dm4t machines. Asus had a great product on its hands but their failure to release it in a timely manner has really turned me off.
