Hi, I'm getting 86°C for my GPU while playing demanding games for longer periods of time. Is it normal? Because everyone else has got temeratures around 78-80°C for the GPU... :/ (the CPU tempf are 89-92°C for me).

Temperatures depend on so many factors it's hard to say. They are high but not dangerously so.

I've actually measured it right now and here are the results:
    - 1 hour of playing Left 4 Dead 2 (or any other less demanding game) - 82°C GPU 719MHz frequency
    - 1 hour of Battlefield 3 MP (GPU constantly on 99%) - 87°C GPU 692MHz frequency

The room temperature is around 24°C and the notebook is on a Coolermaster cooling pad with a fan (which is turned off).

So just in case anyone else decides to put an ssd in the drive bay, dont get the 9.5mm one because apparently its too small and also the bracket holes do not line up from the dvd drive onto the caddy.
i can only presume and from looking at the photos that the 12.7mm one is needed ? as also the dvd cover part that unclips would not line up with this cover also. anyone whos got the caddy (the only one i can find is silverstone brand here) is that correct that the 12.7mm one is correct and will fit right ? been getting frustrate and annoyed, tried searching through this thread for 12.7mm etc to find anyone talking about it etc but to no avail.
any help would be greatly appreciated because i've lost all patience for this thing right now :(

You can easily just measure the DVD drive, which is 12,7 mm in size.

12.7mm is the standard size, the one 9 mm are the slim and are the odd ones out.

    Hi,
today I tested Battlefield 3 MP on 64p maps. Settings: Ultra (with MSAA turned off), Full HD resolution. The averange FPS is around 35-40. But with smoke and explosions it can get as low as 15FPS... and the back to 35 like nothing happend. It's really annoying.

Anyway. I played about an hour and here are the results: 0k37tzq.jpg
As you can see, the CPU runs with Turboboost turned off, but it never dips below it's stock frequency 2.4Ghz. And the GPU runs on "half-turbo" of 653Mhz (full turbo is 719 and without it's 627Mhz).

With the settings for playability and reducing settings that have minimal visual impact. Setting everything to max when you did down to 15 fps does not seem balanced.

Update guys..... And its not good news...
My atheros wireless card started acting up so I went ahead and tried to update it to the most recent driver that was provided through the Asus website... After I updated, well it went south real fast. My WiFi connections read "Limited" or "No Internet Access" leaving me to believe it was my isp's issue.... It wasnt.. My phone was able to connect to it just fine.. So I tried using my Ethernet cable for a good ole wired connection... Only to my dismay it read the same crap.. NO CONNECTION... I'm really in distress now, being that I dished out more than $1000 on this for a network and wired adapter to flunk out on me.... PLEASE HELP!!

Reintall older drivers maybe? Luckily mine has the Intel DualBand Wireless N7260. No issues with Wifi or Ethernet whatsoever.

Go to Device Manager, and the Wireless Adapter properties, go to Driver tab, then choose to roll back the driver.

its not difficult to do. Change the wifi card. I change it to Intel N7260 AC wifi card. You need a dremel tool to shave off (not break) the plastic bracket near the screw, securing the card itself.

No luck whatsoever...... I rolled the drivers back for my Ethernet but it still says No Internet Access and that I'm on a Unidentified network..... The drivers for my WLan is acting really weird.... I uninstall it then windows decides to reinstall it byself to some weird driver 3.0.1.155 and whenever I try to install the older drivers from disc, it doesnt even update.... I'm so close to throwing this laptop against my refrigerator right now ffffffff...... Any other suggestions?
Would replacing my atheros to Intel fix both the WiFi and Ethernet??? Where can I purchase the Intel n7260???

Cool thanks for the quick response tenico.
Alright so with some trial and error, I figured out that the new drivers actually corrupted my files resulting in no connections after an attempt to reinstall the drivers... Luckily I had a backup hdd with my old files and such and I restored it to factory, but I was wondering if someone can shed some light on the procedure to fresh install windows 8 or 8.1 on my computer... I used a keyfinder to find my product key, but when I tried to authenticate my key through the windows 8 installer, it says that my key is invalid for this "retail" copy of windows... help?

    Hi,
Any place other than MicroCenter to get a new one of this N56JR-MH71? Microcenter shipped me one with no padding at all and I got it today. They just stuck a shipping label on the manufacturer's box and shipped it to me from Dallas to California. Box was torn on one edge. Laptop should have taken all the impact because ASUS packaging has no padding also. Left bezel is a bit lifted up. Not sure if the throwing around by Fedex contributed. I haven't even turned it on at this point. Planning to return it. It was painful dealing with them just to get the order shipped out. Worst experience dealing with etailers so far. Even 1saleaday was better.

    Thanks!

On a side note, has anyone been successful in installing/dual booting either Mac OS X or Ubuntu on this laptop?! I'm currently attending a class that requires either one.... just a little bent on which one to proceed with. Thanks again guys!

Manufacturers releases are typically the most stable since they dont release them until they have been fully tested. However they are not always the best performing drivers. You can install them and if you see a drop in performance you can put the previous ones back on.

Has anyone actually took the time to take apart the n56jr to reapply some arctic silver thermal paste on their cpu and gpu? Has it reduced the temps by a good amount? Kind of hesitant if I should take the time to this myself and if it would be effective.... Thanks!

    Got one from Newegg
Not sure why they are shipping without sufficient padding against bumps and shakes. Luckily this one did not take any visible hit. ASUS box inside brown box without any popcorn or bubbles. No protection against bumps. Hope it lasts.

Currently having the atheros and it sucks. Is intel dual band ac 7260 combatible? And if its, how difficult is to install it?

EDIT: Just found that my broken a300-1mo has an intel wifi link 5100 inside ;) I know is an old generation one but is far better than the crappy atheros. So will it work if i install it on my new n56jr?

Hi all, new member to this forum :hi2:

Bought an Asus N56JR last week and I am very satisfied so far, except one thing. The top of the lid, which has the plastic frame around it seems to have about 0.5 mm play in it at the top, on both sides of the center and it creaks a little when slowly pressing and releasing it. Very good build quality except this. Not a big deal but I guess you guys and I share the same OCD type issues and this is a bit annoying. :) Anyone else experinces this issue? I have opened the top part of the plastic frame and snapped it back into place but the problem consists.

Maybe some Loctite will do the trick. Feels a bit weird to send it back for this...

    Pantapanta1,

The problem is, you can't unscrew the screw under the plastic cover. If you did, the card can be pull out with your thumb and be replace. The plastic piece is blocking the screw that secures the card in place. What I did was, shave the left curvature in your pic with a dremel tool, cone head shape drill bit. I never broke the plastic piece at all. I was able to remove the screw and replace the card quickly...my dremel piece looks like the one in the link.

I'm running 8.1. There are a few issues I've yet to resolve:

    - The trackpad sometimes "falls asleep" after long periods of use. Once it wakes up, the two finger scrolling no longer works.
    - Sometimes, when plugging in the power chord, the screen goes super bright and the colors get blown out. Unplugging and plugging the chord back in immediately solves this.
    - The "Instant Key" button only ever remembers its setting through one or maybe two reboots, then has to be reset (making it useless).

Has anyone else run into these issues? Anyone found solutions?

In spite of these (relatively minor) problems, I love the laptop. I replaced the HD with an SSD and it runs like butter. No wifi connection problems either.

It is possible (time consuming. a bit difficult) to swap out the wireless card without going the dremel route. About 14 screws (i did not count properly) to be removed. I was able to do the swap without fully remove the bottom plastic shell. The part where the shell attaches to the screen hinge was difficult to pop open so i did not fully remove the shell. Pics for reference.

i have a building issue again with my 2nd N56jr, there is a gap between the metal and the plastic housing in the uper left corner, near the VGA port, and it creaks when slowly pressing and releasing it

my laptop is all the time on the desk, can you pleas look if you have same issue there ? it look like a building flaw since i had it on both machine, or i'm unlucky !!

i'm really disappointed since it is my 2nd laptop, the 1st pc was replaced under the 30 first days, but now it has 2 months, so it will go to RMA :( .

does some one have the same issue ? thank you

this video may help its not the exact model but they are put together exactly the same and I used it to replace my wifi chip with the AC one. I don't think getting it to that point voids anything as far as warranty.

and as info once it opened slightly(clamshell style) you can get in there to swap it out. I stopped around minute 7.16 with plenty of room to make the swap.
