What model of Samsung? What graphics card is in it, and does it have a backlit keyboard? I'm trying to find a good 15 incher with a decent graphics card, 1080 HD screen and backlit keyboard.
-
-
the samsung is the series 7 chronos 17inch, has the 650 i think
gigabyte has the p2542g, GTX660 2G DDR5, 1080 Full HD screen and backlit keyboard, its 15,6 inch. not sure when the release date is -
same same
i would like to knwo the gfx btw idt there is 1080p on the samsung
-
Meh, never mind then. 17 inches is too big to lug around for college.
Yea, you're right. I looked up the Samsungs and none of them have the 1080p screen. Another option I've been looking at is the Dell XPS 15z. It has everything I'm looking for, except GDDR5 for the graphics card. GDDR5 isn't a must have for me, but I'd really like it so I can be a little more future-proofed. -
the current card in the x-s 15z is trash -
think samsung is 650
-
Right now if you can wait until June or so, I think the Lenovo Y580 is the best option within this category.
-
well there is also gigabyte p2542g, and then there are all the 15 in laptops who might get good amd cards (envy 15, etc)
-
I believe the Gigabyte doesn't have a back-lit keyboard though. From what I'm gathering there's the HP Envy 15, Samsung Series 7, Dell XPS 15z, Lenovo Y580, and of course this Asus. Anything else we should be considering? The front runner for me is the Y580 at this point in time. i7, 1080p, Back-lit keys, decent GPU with GDDR5...
-
why not the regular xps 15? it should have a 640m and its like .95 in thick
-
also idk your budget but here is my thread i made a while ago, the list im considering is at the bottom and its up to date
http://forum.notebookreview.com/wha...-gaming-but-light-portable-laptop-school.html
-
Is there a refresh of it coming out? At this point it's still GDDR3 if we want to be picky. Kind of an ugly design IMO, but worth considering.
-
xps 15 is ugly.
xps 15z is ok but the keyboard is horrible. Moreover, its a dell.
HP envy series is hosed.
Lenovo/Apple are less in more.
sony is crap without contest.
don't even look at toshiba.
gigabyte is untested long term.
So, Asus or Samsung are the best bets at this time if u are looking for newest models with IB. -
Here's a leaked image of the the XPS 15 (L521X) refresh. (source)
It looks much better than the current XPS 15 and appears more similar to the XPS 15z. As .95" laptop, it should be a bit more portable than some of the other 15.6" laptops being refreshed.
It's also been leaked that it'll come with the GT 640M w/ GDDR5, but nothing's for certain. You can head over to this thread for updates and discussion. -
dont understand why they left so much space on either side of the keyboard. they could easily have fitted a number pad with that space
-
they wanted to follow everyone with the mbp route and leave the spaces there
-
Xotipc N76VZ
Maybe they have the 56VZ also, I didn't check.
nVidia GeForce GT 650M 2,048MB PCI-Express GDDR5 DX11 w/ Optimus Technology (SKU – X3R522) !! -
I see:
nVIDIA® GeForce GT 650M GDDR3 (2.0GB) w/ Optimus Technology
and sadly I don't see the 15" or else I'd take this Samsung Series 7 back right now and order it!
Edit: N56 is up on Gentech's site... Think I might be taking the Samsung back lol. -
I dunno about everyone else, but I'm really happy to see a Kepler part in the N76. I was horrified when I kept seeing the GT 635M mentioned. This is probably a good estimation that we'll see a GT 640M (or more) in the N56.
-
Neither Xoticpc or GentechPC (same company?, customization screen is the same) offers a different GPU.
So 650M 2gb DDR3 for the 15'6 and 2GB DDR5 for the 17 inch.
Too bad they don't have the GTX 660M as an option as GPU, could have made a nice laptop.
17'3, 12GB memory, 256GB Corsair SSD, GTX 660M, 1080p 90% NTC Gamut.....yada yada -
Damn, I really wanted the GDDR5 graphics card. Looks like I might be waiting for the Lenovo Y580. Pretty much exact same laptop except with a 660m GDDR5 instead of 650m GDDR3 in the N56.

GT 650M DDR3 is enough for most of the game. According to notebookcheck's benchmark, the DDR3 version is already on par with the last generation GTX 460M (G73SW has it), and not only that, the performance of DX11 is even better. I wonder why people always complain about ASUS not putting in the GDDR5 version. If you are a hardcore gamer, just buy the G series.
-
its just the ddr3 is gonna bottleneck at 1080p... which is at which most people will wanna play
-
Seems Gentech AND XoticPC made a mistake, they corrected it though.
Even the N76 will come with DDR3...
Damn it seems too much to ask for, backlight keyboard, GTX 650M DDR5, sleek/thin design, good sounds and a good panel. -
XoticPC has the Asus N56 ( VZ-DS71) with the standard nVidia GeForce GT 650M 2,048MB PCI-Express GDDR5 DX11 w/ Optimus Technology (SKU – X3R522), so it's GDDR5 for some reason, while GenTech PC has it with the DDR3 version.
-
Xotic having it with GDDR5 gives me hope... Hopefully it isn't a typo like they had with the clevo models when updating them with IVB. Currently for me it's Lenovo Y580 vs. this N56.... Tough call, I guess I still have to wait and see what the Lenovo offers since it supposedly comes out in June.
-
no envy?
-
I've had experiences with two seperate HP's and they didn't go too well. I feel like there was something missing from it when I researched it... Does it have a 1080p screen and do we know if it'll have GDDR5?
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2 -
yes to both. the thing bad about it right now is the 1080p cant show red properly, the refresh should fix that
-
I see. I'll watch closely on that model then. Damn, I don't know how anyone looking in this area is going to be able to narrow it down. I just looked at the IVB Envy thread, it seems like it will only have AMD GPUs? Will it have the equivelant to NVIDIA's optimus then (i forgot the name)?
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2 -
yeah amd gpu with enduro. its said to have 7750m but with the amd release, it would be mroe suited with the 7850m/70m
-
While you guys debate the lack of DDR5 and make yourselves ready for a lowly DDR3 card based laptop, some of us are already getting a 2GB DDR5 650M card in their laptop this coming week...;-)
Sorry guys. I had to drop that in for fun...

BTW, what attracted me to Samsung 17.3" was its 16" size, 6.5lbs weight and 8cell battery. Of course, the rest of the specs are spectacular as well.
Let's hope it meets all the expectations I have from it. -
15in is at the borderline too big, 17in (even in a 16) is too big
-
For developers, screen real estate matters. So, 15.6" is small for me.
17" at 6.5lbs is very light....
Perfect for daily work and occasional gaming.
-
everyone has different situations haha im going to college so 17 is too big
-
XoticPC DDR3 / Customization screen says DDR5
I got a reply from Gentech just to confirm the memory type > DDR3.
@ Pakii94 the size is pretty much that of a 16 inch and weights about that as well.
Surely you can squeeze in 0'4 inch
I feel that Asus drop the ball this time around...at least for some of us. -
Any idea on a European release date?
-
Same here. Any 17 incher isn't even worth considering...
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2 -
Well, if Microcenter lets me return my Samsung Series 7 today, I'm going to purchase the N56. Wish me luck...
-
any news on the release date?
-
You bought the previous gen or the latest Series 7?
-
Previous gen. It's not horrible, but I've had problems with the wifi and graphics switching, and it's more stuff than I want to deal with right now lol.
-
xoticpc, gentech, and some other resellers have started listing as a preorder.. perhaps we can ask them?
-
If i have the money to buy a g series, i certain don't buy a g series, i buy a clevo instead wich is much better for the same price. We complain because asus N56 has fullhd resolution as a standard, so should come with a Gddr5 and not a ddr3, it's just stupid because the difference is like 30 euros or less between the two grafic cards. they already have the VM version(with 630M) for people who don't care about grafic card. So if they put a Gt650M for people who care, these same people who care certainly want a Gddr5 for sure because is a full hd notebook.
-
Not fun because is a 17,3 notebook
-
If it helps those of you making a decision:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
Doesn't look like the GDDR5 makes a big difference at least on benchmarks. The Clevo W110ER has the same card in it's 11.6 screen form. -
Looks like I'm the kind of buyer they're trying to appeal to then. I care enough where a GT650 would be great, but I don't care whether it's GDDR3 vs 5
-
idk what you saw. if you oc it just a bit to the ddr3 core clocks, the card will be much better at higher res
-
Xotic has the graphics listed as GDDR5
ASUS N56VZ-DS71 - XOTIC PC - Asus 15.6" Notebook
Anyone find out if this is a typo?
Release date and price for N6 Series?!
