I mentioned in my earlier post that it is from my friend who got Vista Ultimate.

I also signed up for 64bit, but then they cancelled it for no apparent reasons. "Your COA has been determined to be incompatible with the 64bit Edition of Windows Vista". Since i got my x86 business with the legit key, im going to try out using his full version to clean install, then upgrade to see if it works.

I've been on order received for at least a month now. Just 1.5 weeks ago, I asked them about the deadline and heres what I got int he email:

    and of course this too:

I'm starting to think that if they don't update my status to order shipped or order approved by May1st then i'm gonna get screwed over when I don't get my copy.

I'm with you. My order was validated near the end of February and I haven't gotten a damn thing from them.

I have sent 2 emails after the 8 weeks was up and before today and got the same canned "Dear Customer" answer blueflamedazn quoted above.

I will be really surprised if I ever see that copy of Vista.

don't give up hope.. after receiving an email the other day saying my order was canceled (!) because "not all the data you submitted was captured and we need you to re-enter your information if you would still like to place an order" - I couldn't believe it - I have been waiting for about 2 months.

Well, about two days after I called them to find out what the problem was (they weren't sure and I was told they would contact me shortly) I checked my status and my order was SHIPPED! I should receive it, according to the information given regarding my carrier, by the end of this week or the beginning of next week. I was already at Order Approved.

    made my day

I had almost given up... But today my Vista upgrade arrived!

It consists of something that looks like a home-burned DVD by Asus containing Windows Vista (Business, 32bit), one Asus "Drivers, BIOS and Utilities for Windows Vista" CD and one booklet entitled "Windows Vista Upgrade - Installation Guide".

The upgrade manual states that i need to have the original XP system installed, then uninstall all applications and drivers (pretty much all anyway), and then choose upgrade alternative from the Vista installation.

Is'nt there a way to do a clean install instead, using only the Vista DVD? Anyone recieved their copy of Vista upgrade and have tried this?

    Cheers //Patrik

BTW: My upgrade was delivered from Moduslink in the Netherlands, to me here in Sweden. It have had the status "shipped" for many many weeks now!!! Just so you know ;)

    Patrik,

Which ASUS do you own? I'm just curious because someone else discovered the delay in receiving the upgrade is based on Asus' ability to compile an upgrade disk for each specific system. If you've got an A8Js thats good news for me!

Good news then JWB, it's an Asus A8Js! :) Sorry that I neglected to mention this before :p

It's an A8Js-4S009P and I think this is the "standard" Swedish version of the A8Js (with BT and all ;)).

I will reply here with updates on how this upgrade goes, and if I have to upgrade or if I can do a clean install. Vista is working fine on these laptops, I have been using it since november last year.

    Cheerio! //Patrik

i been waiting two months for them to my status to shipped. i sent an email asking what was the real status and why it was taking so long and this is what was replied back...

    Dear Customer,

Thank you for submitting your order to upgrade your MicrosoftR product.

No worries, your order is ready for shipment and we are now waiting for your retailer to give us the thumbs up to send out your order, perhaps in 1-2 weeks.

Your validation is now complete and we will be processing your order. You should receive an email confirmation when your order is shipped.

needless to say i'm not holding my breath

Option 1: email them and get a vague promises of status change and then wait
Option 2: complain about it in here like everybody else to relieve your stress and then wait
Option 3: try to figure out why they term this as "express" when it's anything but that. while doing that just wait

my status has been "order is approved" for two months. when i get a status change ill let you know and then you probably only have to wait another month... ha!

Option 4 : Send a lawyer's letter to moduslink and microsoft
Option 5 : Do the upgrade, Pirate's way. You know what i mean ;)
Option 6 : Don't waste any of your time with them. Stick with XP forever/ Buy a full retail and yawn over it.

i have recieved my order after numerous emails and POP send-ins.

3lueMage: Did you order the 64 bit edition? If so, that is why your order has been canceled. From what I've read EVERYBODY, including me, had their order canceled if they selected the 64 bit addition. I resubmitted my order for the 32 bit and am waiting for shipment which I hope to get by December! :)

I also had my order canceled.
1st they came with that excuse, wrong version; i proved i had made the right choice, 32 bit, so they sent me another email with a new excuse; they didn't receive my money. I sent them the confirmation of my bank, but after this they stopped answering...
Wouldn't be easier to do like msdn or autodesk?
Just a simple registration and you're ready to download...

    I ordered 32-bit, I dont need 64bit =P

and they cant come up with the excuse "We didnt receive your money" for me, because its home premium and its free, and the statement said you pay the $10 shipping after it's delivered.

    Hello again all;

Sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble with your upgrades. But I agree that this Upgrade Program is anything but Express :p.

Just a heads up on the 64 bit version - when I sat there, making my choice on the Vista upgrade for my A8Js, this is exactly what I had a gut feeling would happen. 64bit Vista = smells trouble and/or delays. So, I bit the bullet and ordered the 32bit version think "well, 64bit computing and widespread software availability won't be seriously here for another 5 years". Lets see if I'm right about that.

It so happens that a friend of mine ordered a notebook the same day I did, an HP NX9420. He also ordered the Vista upgrade (Home, with much expensier handling and shipping fees than from Asus ;)). Now, his computer shipped with Windows XP Home (strange, isn't that more or less a business computer?) but the "lowest" edition of Vista he could select was Home Premium. He just got a reply that his order had been cancelled because the correct upgrade for him was Home Basic. But that was not selectable! lol

So it seems that not only Asus have trouble with this upgrade program.

Anyway, as promised I just wanted to report on how my "upgrade" went! As I had hoped, there was no trouble in booting from the upgrade DVD and doing a clean install. It installed quickly and activated itself beautifully. All my old software works perfectly and all drivers needed are on the Vista Drivers CD from Asus. Phew! I did not look forward to upgrading a tired old XP installation for half a day. But I guess it's a nice feature for you who have an existing installation of XP that you don't want to reformat.

    Cheers folks //Patrik

I used my friend's x64 Ultimate disk, did a clean install on my primary partion, stuck in the product key....guess what? It activated too! So much for "Upgrades". (P.S I was super-busy for this whole week due to studies...so had to drag till today. sorry everyone.)

My order has finally shipped! I'm in Canada, and there have been rumours that Canadians are getting charged an extra $20+ on delivery. If I do get charged extra, I'll be sending a nasty email off to Moduslink for not letting me know there would be additional costs, and ask why they didn't just avoid them in the first place (load a bunch of orders in a truck, drive it across the border, and drop them in a mailbox :) ). My order is coming from Raleigh, NC, and I expect it to get here sometime next week. I'll post on here to let any Canadians here know what happens with the extra costs. BTW, my OEM is Acer.

Thanks for the update epatnor. Encouraging to hear that the clean install worked out smoothly and that you did not encounter any driver issues.

I would be very interested in hearing again from you, lest69. I'm in Canada too. However, I seem to still be tied up in the 64-bit fiasco... :(

Not to answer your question for System64, but I installed Vista Business 64-bit using a "32-Bit" key purchased at Costco. I don't believe the keys are 32 or 64 bit specific, but rather version i.e. Home, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate etc. specific.

The KEY is the key to unlock the versions regardless of which version (32bit or 64 bit).

I.e if i get a key say (BDSBS-A3234-AFJDN-FEDIJ-EF211) (this is a fake key) together with 32bit Vista Home Premium. Somehow i'm lazy to call microsoft and say "hey people ship me x64 for $10". So i snuck around my friend's CD/DVD collection and saw his x64/x86 Vista Ultimate, borrowed the x64 disc, isntalled it, inserted the key and it tells me it can install Home Premium (x64) based on the key, and it activates happily.

    cheers guys.

Thats good to hear, might upgrade for 64-bit in a few months. Just another question how many times can the key be used before you have to call up Microsoft? And is it considered 'used' if you haven't activated it online?

Which laptop model do you have? My order has been stuck on order approved for a very long time and everytime I email them about it they just mail back with a generic messaging saying it will be shipped soon. I own a W3J in Canada.

and guess what? they never mention about 64bit!! lol

So they told me to resubmit my order, I did last week. Now I try logging in to see my status I CANT! It says order/e-mail/COA doesn't exist, I checked my e-mail and everything to make sure it was all correct from the information, it was. So I e-mailed them back(Also last week), why I can't login to see my status, they tell me to use their "new" e-mail for support issues, so I e-mail it. They have not replied. It has been about 5 days, and no reply...! I can't see the status of my vista, and they wont give me a reply on status or why I can't login, and when I call I'm on hold for who knows how long, and supposedly their e-mail said you can only contact support before May 11, and yea so I guess I won't be getting a reply because they failed to reply within their own time limit? I better get vista -_-

What they did say when they said my new order has been confirmed is "We will wait on payment until shipping"

    WHAT PAYMENT?
It's free! Except for shipping which says shipping will be taken after it SHIPS...haven't received an e-mail or anything since then -.-

Plus in the receipt it says this:

Payment Method: Your credit card has been authorized and will be charged when the order ships

I'm sure they charge you first for the shipping before they ship it. Wouldn't make much sense to ship it, then find out your cc is out of order.

maybe so but then whats with me not being able to check the status?!
Theres still the fact that I cant login to check my order status, and the when I e-mailed them why almost a week ago they haven't responded...when all my other support e-mails were responded within two days...this has been almost/more then a week ago,

I ordered in mid March and I'm still at Order Approved. This is pathetic.

I initially ordered in January and I had to resubmit twice because of the 64-bit fiasco... and I am currently only at COA validated. (My POP was validated for my previous two orders!) I am getting very frustrated as well...

l3lueMage: I think "We will wait on payment until shipping" means that they will not charge you until they ship it. To address Hello-'s point, I think they validate/authorize your payment/credit card beforehand, but they do not charge you until shipment.

Maybe some orders will arrive only at the end of june, given how moduslink is hadnling it. Super inefficent in executing a flawless plan.

Microsoft should be ashamed of picking a horrible fly-by-night company to handle these upgrades.

I am sick of their customer service, do they even READ the e-mails?
They finally replied and said we will need this info from you "COA Number, Order Number and E-mail address used in the order"

I GAVE IT TO THEM IN THE EMAIL THEY JUST REPLIED TO!
