The lid looks like a magnesium composite(Like the V6), the palmrests are unknown, doesn't seem like brushed aluminum though, could be either CF-composite, Magnesium composite, or aluminum thats not brushed...

i don't believe the W and V series use plastic like the A-series does...can a reseller confirm?
-
Coriolis; assuming that the V1 is built as well as your V6, how are your palm rests? My co-worker has a Z70VA and when he rests his palms the chasis gives out a little squeak.
-
I love my palmrests, I use to be an owner of a Z70va, and it only squeaks when under a certain amount of pressure(usually fine when I type, etc. since I 'hover' my wrists usually).
The V6's palmrest area is godly, no flex, no squeak, and most importantly, no fadingThe main reason is probrably because the unit is so thin, that there is not much space that is hollow and empty. The right side does get hot every once in a while due to the hard drive.
-
Will this computer also have the graininess problem?
-
I love this model and I want to marry it.
-
-
I doubt it. One of the big selling points is the amazing screen. They call it "splendid" technology and there is a dedicated splendid key. -
Splendid doens't mean too much ( correct me if im' wrong)
-
I've never read a satisfactory explanation of splendid. If it's anything like splenda it will be sweet.
-
Splendid is only a program that automatically changes the colour settings to match with different situation.
For example, if you are watching a movie, you set it to Movie mode through Spendid and it automatically shifts the colours to maximum brightness as well as higher vividity. There are other options as well.
Pretty much, it has nothing to do with the LCD, but its a program that automatically adjusts the colours/brightness to its most potent viewability. Does a good job at it even! -
does anyone have a clue on when these will hit australia? -

In Russia and France there seems to be a model which will come with the following specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo T5600 (replacing the T2400)
15.4 WXGA+ LCD
ATI MOBILITY RADEON X1700 с 256MB Hypermemory
1GB DDR2 RAM
120GB HDD -
The article is about 5 months old. I have a feeling they're talking about desktop variants of the x1700, not the mobile line. -

After doing some light searching on google, it looks like the Yonah V1J has a X1600.
And reading some threads here, there seems to be a desktop X1700 and it is suppose to replace the X1600.
Laptop manufacturers will basicaly always put the newest possible technology into their products, so all these non North American sites on Googles claim that the V1J with Merom comes with a Mobility X1700.
It just best to wait and see if a person from another country, preferably, European to confirm a Merom and X1700 in the V1J first, before we can assume what comes to NA. -

Here's a quick little article.
http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/video/display/20060405200748.html
It states, the X1700 will have DX10, and I think it will have Pixel Shader 4. It will be aimed at $200 and will be mass produced for Back to school.
The X1700 will replace the X1600, the X1500?? will replace the X1300?? and will beat the X1600 in performance??. This sounds like interesting news, of course the Mobile versions will perform slightly less.
Everything looks good for back to school time, expect a lot of new laptops that we have been anticipating already to have newer and better components to meet your need. -
The V1J is available here in Spain and the specs at my local store are as follows:
Processor: Core Duo T2500

Price around 2,200 euros including tax -
Interesting Mateo, which store? I am arriving to Barcelona in 2 weeks and interested in buying one. There are stores that sell Asus in BCN but would like to know about this alternative. Do you know if they upgrade the HD to a 7200 rpm one?

Thanks mateo for the info.
Can you provide a link? Is there a lower speced version of the V1J there too?
Can you give us the price of the laptop without Tax? in euros.
So far this shows the V1J with Yonah has a WSXGA+ screen, X1600 and high specs.
Thanks, looking forward to hear from you.

Strange price strategy strage guys... those at ASUS. -
Hi guys,
Yeah this company is quite big in Spain, i'm based in Madrid, however they have stores around Spain and most likely Barcelona, i just haven't done a lot of research.
Here is a link to some of their asus configurations, they have a lot, around 70 different configurations in total for asus.
http://www.abyss.es/w06/productos/S...US&FILTRO=0&CODIGOSUP=&FAMILIA=&Q=&offset=45#
Empulse, it seems you have nice pricing there in the Netherlands, you are very lucky! i personally like Abyss here in Spain, i can go in to the store and check out their stuff first hand, and from my experience they are reliable and trustworthy, it's a bonus for me that they are competitively priced within Spain, because when purchasing a product that is expected to last several years, price is not my main consideration.
Venturello, i really cannot say whether or not they can upgrade the drive or not, i'm sure they are capable of doing it, but whether they will or not, i'm not sure.
MysticGolem, you should find the prices on that link, with and without tax.

Those who have seen it in person: How does it look in comparison with the V6?

I've yet found another very detailed review, but it's in the Czech language:
http://notebook.cz/__/,clanky,recenze-notebook,2006,Asus-V1J,index.html
Does anyone know what tool is able to translate it? -
Hi All
This is my very first post here at notebookreview.com after having discovered the site a week ago.
After 4 years of happy life with my Fujitsu C2210, I am in need of a new notebook because my current laptop is too slow and the fan is making noise and Fujitsu wants $300.00 to get it fixed. Never the less I love my Fujitsu and planning to keep it.
I looked around the net for laptop and came across the Asus brand after going trough Sony, Toshiba, Fujitsu and Lenovo (IBM). None of the above manufacturers have the power and the design I am looking for. Like million others, I too knew Asus as a brand for motherboard and nothing more; But now I know their laptops are beautiful and according to descriptions, powerful as well. I am having my eyes on V6J and W3J but since V1J is coming out and seems to be an improved V6J (wide screen, fingerprint reader and webcam) I want to know if anyone know when it would be released and for how much. I can't wait till 2007, so do you think the V1J with Core 2 Due (Memron) would be available for around $1900-$2000 in a month or two? Of course I live in the United States.
And can you elabotrate on V6J and W3J. Since I have seen niether, I wanted to know if V6J screen is glossy like the ones of Sony and W3J. I know it says colorshine but is that what it menas.
Thanks for all your help and expertise. -

The V1J not only has those mentioned above features but also has a modular bay, meaning you can take out the optical drive and put in a 2nd HD or even a 2nd battery. The release dat of the V1J is unknown, people are estimating anywhere from early September for back to school, to mid Oct.
Both W3J and V6J have colour shine, which means glossy, all brands like you know call thier screen something else, which means glossy. You may want to have a look at or try to find one you can play around with to see how the glossy screen is and compare to other models.
Most here find the glossy screens to be nice, you can read up on all of this, if you do a search for these models.
As for the pricing on the V1J, it is estimated many times, 2100$ USD and may come in two options, high specs or low specs. Nothing has been confirmed yet. -
Thanks for your advise, but the question is, where can I find one to look at, considering Asus is nowhere to be found.
-
It's not out yet.
-
Just checked the status of the Merom edition in Europe and it's been changed from midway September to early October on many sites. I really hope it will come equipped with a X1700, rather than a x1600.

hmm, i've been looking all over for the European version of the Merom V1J, many of their sites also show X1600 not the X1700...its wierd...now we have no clue what vid card it has.
I would prefer it to have a X1700 because of the increase in performance, Dx10 support and Pixel Shader 4....but who knows. The V1J Merom may just come with a X1600.
Either way I will still prolly buy it aslong as the heat problem aint too bad. And hopefuly i can get more from the battery than a few others, 2hours and 30mins, I am hopeing i could get a little more like 3 hours with undervolting or adjusting other settings.
Thanks,

How is the V1J compared to W3J regarding weight and dimensions? (lbs and inches please
) I'm assuming its .5-1lb more than W3J if both optical drives removed?

Here's a link to the UK production model of the V1J.

Not sure if this has been asked, but whats the chance of seeing something like this (as far as build quality, etc) with an nvidia card?
Until AMD (hopefully) opens up the ATI driver, ATI cards are useless to me -

Your in luck zachtib, the A6T seems like the perfect model for you.

it comes to 5.73lbs..barely more than the w3j..or the V6J for that matter -
MilestonePC.com Company Representative
Right, but you need to factor in a few other things, the weight is measured without an optical drive.
All in all the weight of the V1J should end up being with all components and the optical drive, 6.3lbs.
But that's still a rough number. It is still a good weight for a 15.4" Widescreen with a lot of features. -
hmm, is that a6t model available in the US?
-
I'm one of those people who picks a laptop they want, wait till the price goes down to buy, then when the price goes down, another laptop pops up and makes me start the process over again. Argh! lol... i really want this one...
-
does asus ever include fingerprint readers in their laptops? what about slot load dvd drives? these would probably make an asus laptop perfect to me! im guessing the v1j has neither though, right?
-
It's only been recently, with the R1f and V1j.
The slot drives are prolly only found on the W1 and W2 series at the momment. -
arent the drives hot swap? could i swap for a slot loading one? or a battery module?
-
Yes, but that is only if the faceplate even works, or else you'll have an ugly empty space there.
-
what do you mean faceplate?
-
Here's an example:
This is a regular tray optical drive:
A slot loading looks like this:
Pretty much, what I mean is that the 'faceplate' that merges the OD with the laptop will not be on the slot loading drive. -
did you post the wrong side of that laptop? i dont see an optical drive... and how bad would it really look? you say ugly empty space but im not picky, nor will i be staring at the side of my laptop haha
