Well I can't trace any facts about the design down on the keyboard. The P/Ns are completely unknown.

So people that actually own the G50 series are going to need to establish a new thread, post up a bunch of pics of their keyboards to compare with.

Right now since even Asus doesn't have the system parts listed, you probably can't get a new one anyway... but my gut feeling is someone is just going to have to buy a 51 style and try it.

What do you all think the warranty for this is going to be like at Best Buy? If it is going to be like past models, then Best Buy might shorten the warranty down to 1 year with no accidential coverage...

Asus usually has the best warranty out there with 2 years coverage and 1 year accidential...I hope Best Buy will not take this away...But I have a feeling that for under 1k they probably will.

BB gets really annoying trying to make money off customers by selling them their warranty instead of the manufacturer's warranty.

The unit that you buy from best buy does not come with the 2 year with 1 year accidental from asus.. only comes with the 1 year from asus. Its how i guess best buy keeps the cost down.. So if you want additional warranty you just have to consider the geek squad one.. Offers accidental and also battery coverage.. just ask any sales rep for more details.. I can relate to that cause i work in the computer department.. ;) .. And even as an employee I too buy the protection and would defiantly recommend it.

tizzao - I will take pictures of the graphic card later tonite.. for now i gotta run some erens so will post later tonite..
Matrinix- It gets a little warm prolly just as much as the g50vt.

As far as the graphic card goes.. i was running some test while in game and with max res and no AA i was getting 20 - 30fps.. there was some time i was getting 17 fps but that was only for a few sec's. its not bad.. playable in very high settings.. i am sure upgrading the processor will help more..

Best buy offers accidental damage so my guess would be if something goes wrong when you change it then it should be covered under accidental but i wouldn't say that to them if you did make a mistake.. ;) So i would get the accidental protection to be on the safe side.. Accidental covers everything except if you fully submerge the laptop in water and human bodily fluids..

Hm doesn't look too bad aside from the copper bar you gotta remove.

What are the chances BB carries another higher end model?

Don't think you can go to a qx9300 since maybe the bios wont support it.. I think the max is the only one i posted earlier.. the Q9100.. I think that's the max you can put in it for the quad core.. as far as the graphic card goes if they make a mmx style to fit this model then it may work.. Don't know..

KimoT - there was a link to where you can get it from.. i'll look for it.. but its directly from asus.. here is the link http://estore.asus.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=4410&catid=606
I believe it may work for the G51 series too.

Thx a lot man for the pics.

The MXM for the NV 260M GTX is MXM3. Its the same chip as the 9800m GTX, but with higher clocks 550/1375/950 against 500/1250/800.

The 280M GTX could be an option, as it's also MXM3. But the problem would be BIOS, heat, power... and price/ availability.

I wonder if you change the processor, will it still be possible to OC with the new CPU..?

If yes it think the best choice would be the Q9100 then.

Is the cooling loud? I wonder how can only 1 fan cool such a powerful GPU, because the CPU is not top of the line. But for the price there is no better option. We can say bye bye to Gateway P-7805u FX and give G51 the status of "best bang for the buck" no?

Hold on so if you try to change the cpu and mess up the warranty still covers that? Also is it easy to change it after you take off all the casing and what not?

No. The plan excludes "unauthorized modifications" which would seem to cover upgrades.

I wonder if Best Buy will have multiple models of the G51 with a higher end one sporting a better processor and Blu-Ray. But for now, it seems the $999 model is indeed real and hearing it can play Crysis on very high with a playable framerate on the native res is some great news. I hope Best Buy stores start getting these in stock soon as I can't wait to get my hands on one of these.

So basically what im getting from this is
    1) Sunny is amazing, and we all owe him rep.
    2) The G51 seems to be better than the G50Vt-X5 hands down, even with a 2.0 GHz processor

    3) Besides design, the main upgrades seem to be the GPU, backlit keyboard, anything else?
    4) cons are 6-cell battery only.. (is it possible to upgrade to a 9-cell?) and slow CPU
    5) We need benchmarks asap :)
    6) I'd still like to know about the overclocking features on this bad boy.

    Thanks so much Sunny!

OH! also, (sorry for double post)

What does it mean that there's no XP visualization? Meaning the G51 cant run XP or something? I assume i'd be running 7 anyways when i get this but what was the problem?

but im not dropping more $$ till my warranty is up I think, by the sounds of it even the 2.0GHz will run crysis-era games on med-high with no real limitations.

Could someone please elaborate on the "unable to virtualize XP" statement? Am I to believe that this machine will be unable to virtualize any 32bit OS or just XP?

And for those who are finding these at BB are they on the floor or in the back?

The new Windowa 7 Will support xp mode but requires a specific processor and also is only included in the ultimate and business series.. The G51 that i got today does not support that because of the processor but upgrading that will fix the issue.. Thats what we mean by "virtualized XP mode"

Phoenix.blue - The unit comes with some sorta overclocking feature like "gaming mode" but dont know exactly whats its doing until i install some tools on it.. I'll get around it later tonite if i have the chance but I will post results. Oh and thanks! I think you got the list pretty much covered..

rsm86 - Thanks a lot! Yea its prolly why i am the MVP of best buy currently.. lol

I don't know about 32-bit OS virtualization in general but this processor won't be able to virtualize XP under Windows 7. Tom's Hardware has a list of processor that will and won't support it and the one in this laptop is currently listed as unsupported.

20-30 with 17 fps at times isn't that great though. You should have at least 30 fps locked. I think 2.4 should be the recommended here so at least P8600 should be the upgrade.

I think that is impressive for a $1k laptop running a demanding game like Crysis on very high settings. I've never played the game but I've been told it is actually quite playable at around 25FPS (maybe has something to do with frame smoothing). From what Sunnyc90 posted, the game seems playable on max settings (no AA) without the need for overclocking. More benchmark testing needs to be done but that definitely sounds promising.

No question 1K is a great price. And 25 fps is considered minimum to be playable of course since movies are 24 fps and watchable. But like I said, an upgrade of maybe 200 bucks for the processor isn't that bad. $1200 USD for all that? I think it's great and worth the upgrade.

And who knows when Canada will get it. It's such BS here. I don't know why it's slow to get here or if it ever does. Must be some sort of Canadian laws for product requirements? I'm just lucky I go to the States very often.
